Damon Wayans Jr. Is Returning to New Girl: 4 Reasons We're Excited

by Shannon Vestal

When New Girl comes back this Fall, it'll be gaining a new boy who's actually not really new: Damon Wayans Jr. is coming back to New Girl in season three. He will reprise his role as Coach, the character he played in the pilot. Back then, Wayans couldn't appear on the rest of the season because of his prior commitment to Happy Endings, and he was replaced by Lamorne Morris, who plays Winston. Since Happy Endings has been canceled (RIP), New Girl is bringing Wayans's character back for an arc in season three. We think it's a great decision, and here's why.

  1. It'll soothe the blow of Happy Endings' cancellation. The recent loss of Happy Endings still hurts, but at least we can look forward to cast members like Wayans popping up in other places. While Coach didn't get to prove himself that much in just one episode, we've watched Wayans shine on three seasons of Happy Endings as Brad and know he can make Coach funnier.
  2. Wayans will bring some fresh comedy. New Girl has only gotten stronger in its two seasons, but I think it could be even better, and Wayans could be the impetus for that. He's a hilarious comedian with a distinctive style, and while we obviously won't see the same bits he's done on Happy Endings (Sinbrad!), I feel like we know we'll be getting some new, great stuff from him.
  3. A new character can shake things up. We just saw Nick and Jess get together, so I'm hoping that their relationship won't be the only source of drama. However, if Coach wants to move back in, a new roommate could be just the thing to take the focus off Nick and Jess. What would this mean for the housemates? I can't wait to find out.
  4. It'll be a preview of Let's be Cops! Wayans and another New Girl star, Jake Johnson, are costarring in the upcoming comedy Let's Be Cops, and I can't wait to see their one-on-one chemistry, which we didn't really get in the New Girl pilot. We've only seen a handful of pictures from the set, so seeing them in primetime will get us even more pumped up for the movie.

Don't remember Coach on New Girl? Watch him in the trailer for the pilot after the jump.

The 5 Best Dishwashers

by Jeffrey Pu
dishwasher

If you've been following along with our product review articles, then you know we've been supplying you with myriad cooking appliances, which has inevitably riddled your kitchen with dirty dishes. But while most homes come with a dishwasher that can competently handle your cleaning loads, newer dishwashers meet more rigorous efficiency standards, which translate to greater savings in energy and water for you. (See also: How to Clean Your Dishwasher)

What Is a Dishwasher?

A dishwasher cleans dirty dishes by spraying them with hot water, followed by a cleaning mixture composed of water and detergent. After a rinsing cycle, a heating element heats the air inside the dishwasher to dry out the clean dishes. Most tests agree that price does not typically reflect cleaning performance; even budget dishwashers do a great job of cleaning your dishes. Instead, increased price buys you quieter operation and additional bells and whistles.

Best 5 Dishwashers

Kenmore Elite 12783

According to Consumer Reports, this Kenmore Elite conventional dishwasher offers exceptional washing performance coupled with fantastic energy and water efficiency ratings.

This Kenmore model is also one of the quietest models tested by Consumer Reports. Additional features include a stainless steel tub, turbo cycle, and soil sensor. The upper rack is also adjustable, giving you more flexibility when loading your machine.

Maytag JetClean Plus MDB8959AWW

Rated well for both its ability to clean as well as its energy efficiency, owners love that the Maytag JetClean Plus dishwasher brings high-end performance without a high-end price tag. Other features include an adjustable top rack, a hard food disposer (which saves you from cleaning out a filter), and options for steam, rinse-only, and sanitary wash cycles. However, this dishwasher is a bit louder than other, more expensive models.

GE Profile PDWT480RRS

Considered a top pick by Good Housekeeping, the GE Profile is definitely on the higher end of the dishwasher spectrum. In passing GH's cleaning test, you can be sure that this dishwasher can handle even the toughest cleaning jobs with ease.

It's also rated well for energy efficiency to save you money. Additional features include a well-designed flatware basket for easy placement, integrated designed with a completely-hidden control panel, and a SmartDispense detergent system that allows you to pre-fill detergent for a month's worth of loads.

LG LDS4821ST

Good Housekeeping's choice for a budget buy, this LG dishwasher does everything you need it to, and it does it well. It doesn't come with many bells and whistles, but it does include a nice chime to mark the end of the cycle, as well as an additional rinse option.

Bosch Ascenta SHX3AR75UC

Highly recommended by Consumer Reports, the Bosch Ascenta brings top performance, with a number of additional features, at a very competitive price.

At its foundation, it is a high-performing, highly efficient, and extremely quiet machine. It also comes with a soil sensor, delayed start function, adjustable upper rack, and integrated design. This dishwasher has a filter that requires manual cleaning, but that also serves to make it quieter.

Williamsburg Is The New Park Slope (Brooklyn Heights Is The New Williamsburg)

by Choire Sicha
by Choire Sicha

"The workers at the Rosarita Fish Shack in Williamsburg were surprised to see a couple pushing a crib on wheels down North Seventh Street on July 4.

They were further stunned when the couple asked if they could push the crib up to one of their sidewalk cafe tables and have their child hang out in it while they ate brunch."

Yes. Yes. Amazing. Do not miss their photo.

In a surprise transition, the babyness of Williamsburg is increasing exponentially while what we could consider "smart young hipsters" have been moving to Brooklyn Heights, which is simultaneously, and surprisingly, de-babying. GOOD LORD what's next.

Montage of a Woman Learning to Dance in One Year

by Kimber Streams

Designer Karen X. Cheng learned to dance in a year and chronicled her journey and many hours of practice in this video. She shares her story and provides advice for others who want to learn to dance or follow any dream at Dance in a Year.

People who watch me dance today sometimes assume I’ve been dancing for many years. I made this video so you could see the awkward body that started just one year ago.

Here’s my secret: I practiced everywhere. At bus stops. In line at the grocery store. At work — Using the mouse with my right hand and practicing drills with my left hand. You don’t have to train hardcore for years to become a dancer. But you must be willing to practice and you better be hungry.

This isn’t a story about dancing, though. It’s about having a dream and not knowing how to get there — but starting anyway. Maybe you’re a musician dreaming of writing an original song. You’re an entrepreneur dying to start your first venture. You’re an athlete but you just haven’t left the chair yet.

Summer Streets returns to NYC this August

by harlemcondolife

Summer Streets returns to NYC this August

Summer Streets is an annual celebration in New York City for people to get out and enjoy our most valuable public space… our streets!  For three consecutive Saturdays, August 3, 10 and 17, nearly seven miles of New York City’s streets are opened up for  everyone to play, walk, run and bike.

This year two things in particular that stand out “Voice Tunnel” by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and “CoolStop” by Chat Travieso.  Voice Tunnel will be  a seven-block-long art installation of lights and sound  in the Park Avenue Tunnel open for the first time to pedestrians in history during Summer Streets. The seven-block-long tunnel, running from 33rd Street to 40th Street, which originally carried rail cars when it opened in 1834, will become the basis for a temporary, participatory art installation.  See more Here.  Cool Stop is a prototype for a water mister that connects to fire hydrants and provides a safe, efficient and fun alternative to cool off by a hydrant. Constructed mostly of recycled PVC piping, the 10′ installation resembles a large splash that Summer Streets participants may stand under for a small reprieve from the hot summer sun.

Summer Streets returns to NYC this August

Summer Streets is modeled on other events from around the world including Ciclovía in Bogotá, Colombia and the Paris Plage. The event is part bike tour, part walking tour, part block party–a great time for exercise, people watching, or just enjoying summer mornings.

Running from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, Summer Streets extends from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park.  All activities at Summer Streets are free of charge, and designed for people of all ages and ability levels to share the streets respectfully. On three consecutive Saturdays in the summer, nearly seven miles of NYC’s streets are opened for people to play, walk, bike, and breathe. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. In 2012, more than 250,000 people took advantage of the open streets.

Eva Longoria Is Dating A Dude From Her Failed Reality Show

by Michael K

evadatingthedudefromherrealityshow

Ready to Love, the reality dating show that Eva Longoria produced died and was buried in NBC’s grave after only two episodes, but at least she got a hot piece out of it. Floridian entrepreneur and philanthropist Ernesto Arguello was a contestant on Ready to Love and he picked former Miss USA Shandi Finnessey. But a few months ago there were rumors that Ernesto wasn’t with Shandi because he had moved into Eva Longoria’s house and was bumping nipples with her. But at the time, Eva spewed out some bullshit and said that they weren’t doing it and that a lot of the contestants lived at her house because they had no other place in L.A. to stay and blah blah blah blah. Eva was obviously saying that while boning Ernesto. Well, yesterday Eva said in a statement to People (yes, a statement to People) that she’s with Ernesto, but they only got together recently and they have the tabloids to thank. My eyeballs rolled like they’ve never rolled before.

“I think that’s why our relationship is so special – we truly started as friends. I guess we have the press to thank for pushing us to see something we didn’t see!”

The only pushing going on was Eva pushing her chocha onto Ernesto’s peen during the past four months. Let’s be honest.

A source (aka one of Eva’s cousins who she paid to say only good things) laid it on thick to People by saying that Ernesto and Eva are perfect together and will probably get married in a year or less.

“It’s very real – they’re both in love, which is rare for him. They’re always traveling together. His family likes her a lot … they’ve never seen him so taken by someone. Eva is a firm believer in marriage. Ernie may be a player when he is single, but he’s never cheated on anyone and is very religious. I think the fact that he’s so family oriented is what got her. My guess would be they’ll be married within the next year.”

Jesus and God are throwing a double side-eye at that “very religious” shit, because the last time they checked Thou Shalt Not Lie was still one of the Ten Commandments or whatever. And Eva obviously broke that one when she denied doing Ernesto even though you could practically smell his crotch on her breath. But Ernesto is a total upgrade from that Tony Parker dude and judging by that look of excitement on her face, he has a toothless mouth on the back of his neck.

Foster + Partners Release Images of Luxury Condo in Miami © Faena Group

Foster + Partners have released new images of the luxurious, 18-story Faena House currently being constructed in Miami. Argentinean developer Alan Faena, who is best known for transforming Buenos Aires’ abandoned Puerto Madero neighborhood into the city’s most vital culture center, commissioned the project, which will mark the first phase of the anticipated Faena District in Miami Beach. Once complete, the district will include a five-star hotel, a large and versatile Arts Center, an OMA-designed parking complex, a luxury retail complex, and a marina.

“We are creating far more than a real estate project in Miami Beach. We are curating a new neighborhood, with the most exceptional team of talent from around the world,” said Alan Faena. “We believe Faena House will be the cornerstone of a neighborhood that is the new paradigm of the Miami lifestyle, one where design, refined hospitality and culture converge.”

Faena House, with 50% of its condos already under contract, is scheduled completion for fall 2014. It offers 47, one to five bedroom residences that each feature an expansive, wraparound terrace, floor to ceiling window wall and door systems, along with nautically inspired kitchens and custom bathrooms designed by the architects themselves in collaboration with Molteni & C and Permasteelisa Interiors.

Celebrity Real Estate: After Nine Months, Kevin James Lists Florida Palace For $20M

by Amy Schellenbaum

I was surprised
he lived like this

kevin%20james%20lead2.jpg

After having such a happy-go-lucky time unloading his SoCal spread—which, if one may recall, sold for $55K over ask just 36 days after listing—actor Kevin James has decided to try it all again, this time with his larger Palm Beach manse, which he's just hoisted onto the market for $19.95M. James—known for Hitch and his comedy TV series The King of Queensbought the 25,834-square-foot, 10-bedroom estate for $18.5M less than a year ago, and has apparently been using the grandiose, Med-style house as his main landing pad. The brokerbabble onetime dubbed the mansion a "blissful haven for indoor/outdoor living" and "an oceanside paradise indulging every passion," though the gossip blogs say it was appraised for just $10M. Inside: much in the way of mahogany paneling, loggias, "wardrobe rooms," and wood-beamed ceilings, all of which are on display in the listing photos, below.

UPDATE: Just kidding, guys. Turns out a "a glitch on the homepage of a local Realtor" sent out some straight-up incorrect info about several expensive Palm Beach properties, including this one. Apparently James and his people are "not too happy." Ruh roh.

Laurie Holden Not Wearing A Bra At The Saturn Awards In Burbank
In a more perfect world, when women show up to award shows with big boobs and no bras, they will actually be given awards for showing up with big boobs and no bras. I’m not sure what the Saturn Awards are, but they can’t be anything close as important as that. C’mon, look at those boobs. Now give them a damn trophy.

Here’s Laurie Holden from Walking Dead. She’s in her 40′s which even Siri on my iPhone knows means those boobs aren’t close to real. Still, impressive.

Dead island that inspired Skyfall comes to Google Street View (video)

by Sharif Sakr

Japan's 'Dead Island' mapped by Google Street View,

It goes by the name of Hashima, or Gunkanjima ("Battleship Island"), or even "The Dead Island", since it inspired the water-locked cyberterrorist HQ in Skyfall. As you can see for yourself, courtesy of the new Google Street View (and official "making of" video) embedded after the break, it's a very a real place off the coast of Japan's Nagasaki Peninsula, and it's even lonelier than its fictional counterpart in the Bond film (which wasn't actually filmed there). There are no tourist offices or giant Oedipus Complexes, as far as we can see, just long stretches of overgrown roads and collapsing apartment blocks that once housed 5,000 people, before they abandoned the island in 1974 following the demise of its coal industry. It took a Google employee two hours to map the place and preserve its crumbling visage for posterity using a special backpack, but don't be surprised if you want to leave it after just a few minutes.

Should the Wedding Gift Match the Per-Plate Cost?

by Emily Co

And in the latest bridezilla news, a nasty text exchange between a wedding guest and a newly wedded couple ensued when the attendee gave a gift basket.

It was wicker basket full of "food items, most of them PC Black Label, including: tricolor pasta, salsas, balsamic vinegar and olive oil, gourmet croutons, Panko breading, pesto, some baking ingredients, biscuits from Godiva, and a few 'fun' items like marshmallow fluff, Sour Patch Kids, and butterscotch sauce. . . . On the card [they] wrote, 'Life is delicious . . . Enjoy.'"

The wedded couple, two brides, got offended, and one of them approached the man and his date about the gift, and asked for the receipt because she said she was gluten-intolerant. Then, the second bride sent this text along the following day: "Hey it's [bride 1's] wife Laura. I want to thank you for coming to the wedding Friday. I'm not sure if it's the first wedding you have been to, but for your next wedding . . . People give envelopes. I lost out on $200 covering you and your dates plate . . . and got fluffy whip and sour patch kids in return. Just a heads up for the future "

The response triggered angry messages back and forth between the man and Laura, the whole conversation of which can be viewed here.

Do you agree with the bride - is it the guest's responsibility to match how much the wedded couple is spending on him?

Thoughts on New York City’s boring street fairs

by Benjamin Kabak
Bartice

This is exactly how I feel about street fairs. Boring and repetitive.

Without street fairs, how would New Yorkers get their MozzArepa fix? (Photo by flickr user Joe Shlabotnik)

When I was a little kid, I used to love the street fairs on the Upper West Side. In the early spring, the Daily News would hand out printed one-sheeters featuring the Yankee schedule, and I’d follow along for the season. Plus, those funnel cakes were great. My parents and I — sometimes with my aunt and uncle along as well — would stroll the fairs and soaking in the street life.

Somewhere along the way, though, over the past three decades, New York City’s street fairs have grown to be intolerably repetitive events with no relationship to the neighborhood and little in the way of overall utility. On Sunday afternoon, the street fair came to me, and I obliged. I awoke to the sights of merchants constructing their white tents along Park Slope’s 7th Ave., and I ended up spending about an hour walking the gathering called, for some reason, the Seventh Heaven Festival.

My girlfriend and I did our best to make the most of it. We ate only from local restaurants and skipped past the sausage stands, zeppole booths and mozzarepa dealers that have become the hallmarks of these city-wide fairs. Still, we were hard-pressed to find anything of value. Outside our apartment were stands hawking allegedly hand-made baskets, $5 dresses, cut-rate sunglasses with designer names attached, tube socks and sheets. Down the block were people also selling allegedly hand-made baskets, $5 dresses, cut-rate sunglasses with designer names attached, tube socks and sheets. The crowning moment came when a booth bearing the sign “Interesting Items” promised to sell us scissors, tweezers, and magnifying glasses. Never have I been less interested.

My not-so-newfound boredom with street fairs isn’t something that has come with age and experience. The city over, these things are the same, and even those street fairs with a modicum of individuality — the Atlantic Antic comes to mind — have seen booth space taken over by discount merchants selling a bunch of junk no one needs or wants. As I surveyed the scene (and later spotted a B67 bus trying to wind its way down 6th Ave.), I marveled at the street fair’s complete takeover of normal New York City life. Local businesses are literally crowded out by tents of remainder goods too cheap for Target; pedestrian life is interrupted; and transit services are diverted to less optimal routes. Why exactly do we put up with these things?

Over the past few years, New Yorkers have lived through a remarkable transformation in public space. As Clyde Haberman profiles in today’s Times, NYC DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan has led an effort to restore street space to people. After decades of prioritizing cars and eliminating sidewalk space and room for people, New York planners have tried to make it work for everyone. We’ve seen pedestrian plazas grow in popularity, and a new City Bench program brings seats to areas where a fire hydrant or curb were the best options around. And yet street fairs persevere.

The problems with street fairs are well documented. Seven years ago, the Center for an Urban Future called upon the city to rethink street fairs, and in subsequent testimony before City Council, Center officials blamed the monopolistic set-up of the street fair structure. One company runs nearly every single street fair in the city, and the choices they make are mind-numbingly repetitive and boring. Three years ago, the Center followed up with a series of suggestions for improving street fairs that would have them look more like a greenmarket/holiday market/Brooklyn Flea/Red Hook Food vendor set-up than the current iteration. The plans sound good, but policy changes remain few and far between.

I don’t have any great answer for the street fair problem. Yet, as I strolled down 7th Ave. today, I wondered what the point of it all was. If street views disappeared tomorrow, would anyone in New York City miss them? I don’t think so.
