Error of Omission: 50-Floor Skyscraper Lacking an Elevator

by Urbanist
[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

no elevator tower skyline

Twin towers raising up the existing skyline and joined at the top – these were supposed to be a sign of recovery in a city and country ravaged by the global financial collapse. Instead, the Intempo building in Spain has become a stark standing symbol of incompetence. Consider, for instance, the following farcical architectural accident: it was not built to house an elevator actually able to climb the structure, which is already over 500 feet tall.

no elevator building construction

As Jamie Condliffe summarizes on Gizmodo (images via IntempoBenidorm), the rising scope of the building was in part “a function of the greed surrounding the project. Initially designed to be a mere 20 stories tall, the developers got over-excited and pushed the height way up: now it boasts 47 stories, and will include 269 homes. But … original design obviously included specifications for an elevator big enough for a 20-story building.”

no elevator half finished

As a result, the shaft space and room for lifts, motors, cable and other equipment was significantly under-designed, leaving nearly thirty stories (maybe more, depending on the final height) of condominiums that would be walking-access only if the structure were finished as currently planned.

no elevator structure spain

Thanks to bad banks going under, corruption surrounding the construction itself and costs of materials, the entire process has been plagued with problems and setbacks almost since it began. At different points, the builder went without pay, workers walked off the job thanks to poor safety conditions and interruptions have delayed completion time and time again. On the financial side, from Economia“The project is burdened by allegations of fraud, liens and claims from customers and suppliers.” The absence of spatial accommodation for a working elevator is in some ways simply the symbolic cherry on top – except to get to that cherry, you would need to walk up dozens of flights of stairs.

Ricardo Steak House (Review) in East Harlem

Ricardo Steak House (Review) in East Harlem

Ricardo Steak House doesn’t need help from a blog to bring them any business, but a reader of HaremCondoLife asked us recently why we have never reviewed Ricardo’s?  Since then I’ve been trying to go back there to take some photos and see if it was as good as I had remembered.  Living in West Harlem I don’t get over to East Harlem as much as I’d like too. So this past weekend we headed over with another blogger from DestinationHarlemTV and had dinner on Saturday night.  It was as good as I had remembered if not even maybe a little better. This is not a place for your parents and your kids, this is a place for us.  The people are loud, the music is loud and the food is excellent!  The atmosphere on a weekend night you can expect people out in front waiting for a table to free up. It’s normally not too bad of a wait if you come early.  There is a nice bar area as you walk towards a large dinning area which spills out onto a great covered porch area with additional seating.  A really nice touch is that the porch is open all year long.  If you are not the type of person that likes a party, this is not the place for you.  If you are looking for a party with your steak, this is your place.  Music is pumping, the hostesses are very attractive and friendly, the servers are really efficient and the steaks in my opinion are one of the best in Harlem.  You feel well taken care of which is pretty spectacular considering all the chaos that the staff seem to manage with an experienced ease.  If you are coming up from downtown Manhattan it is worth the trip.  If you are coming over from West Harlem or down from Upper Harlem, you won’t be disappointed.  Wardrobe is a little of everything (it was a very hot summer night the night we were there) some were dressed casually in shorts (including one of my friends) but the majority of the crowd were dressed to impress.  Especially the Ladies.

To begin with you will start with a basket of Garlic Bread which they are somewhat famous for.  Toasted served warm and would be very easy to fill up on before your dinner. I’d recommend the Sauteed Garlic Shrimp with mixed greens appetizer, very refreshing in an herb white wine sauce.  They have a real nice variety and selection of appetizers to choose from (see MENU) but also listen to their specials of the day.  For dinner one of my friends had the Skirt Steak with Grilled Shrimp, Mashed Potatoes and String Beans which he liked a lot. Big cut of steak too. I also recommend the Filet Mignon which was cooked and seasoned perfectly and a large cut (8 oz) of steak. This comes with roasted Red Bliss Potatoes and Garlic Spinach.  The red potato side was one of the best I’d ever had.  I normally like mashed and was considering the plantains which I’d had once before  but I would definitely get the red bliss again when I go back.  My other friend had the Prime Rib with Mashed Potatoes and Juicy Basil Tomato Wedges.  I’d like to order this next time but might add a side of sweet plantains.  There are a lot of other options if you are not a steak lover from Fish N’ Chicks to Pastas.

The vibe is very much a neighborhood and regulars crowd who continue to come back for the good service and great food.  Reminded me of all the other places I like in East Harlem that we need to blog more about here at HarlemCondoLife.  If you haven’t yet experienced Ricardo Steak House I definitely would recommend it.  I can’t wait to go back.  I recommend for dinner to eat in the main dinning room or the porch area.  Be prepared to wait a little bit but it goes quickly.  Just order a sangria or mojito at the bar and enjoy people watching and the music by the DJ.  Or you can wait outside in front until your name is called.  We waited no longer than 15 minutes and sat in the main room.

Elon Musk Unveiled the Hyperloop Project

by Shan Tara

Elon_Musk_Unvield_Hyperloop_Project_CubeMe01
South African-American Elon Musk, inventor and entrepreneur, best known for founding PayPal has just unveiled his latest oversized project called the’ Hyperloop.’ The Hyperloop low-pressure system would transport up to 28 people from city to city via pods enclosed in metal tubes. Hyperloop would travel between Los Angeles, California, and San Francisco, California in 35 minutes.
Elon_Musk_Unvield_Hyperloop_Project_CubeMe03

For travel at high speeds, the greatest power requirement is normally to
overcome air resistance. Aerodynamic drag increases with the square of speed,
and thus the power requirement increases with the cube of speed. For
example, to travel twice as fast a vehicle must overcome four times the
aerodynamic resistance, and input eight times the power.
Just as aircraft climb to high altitudes to travel through less dense air,
Hyperloop encloses the capsules in a reduce pressure tube. The pressure of air
in Hyperloop is about 1/6 the pressure of the atmosphere on Mars. This is an
operating pressure of 100 Pascals, which reduces the drag force of the air by
1,000 times relative to sea level conditions and would be equivalent to flying
above 150,000 feet altitude. A hard vacuum is avoided as vacuums are
expensive and difficult to maintain compared with low pressure solutions.
Despite the low pressure, aerodynamic challenges must still be addressed.
These include managing the formation of shock waves when the speed of the
capsule approaches the speed of sound, and the air resistance increases
sharply. Close to the cities where more turns must be navigated, capsules
travel at a lower speed. This reduces the accelerations felt by the passengers,
and also reduces power requirements for the capsule. The capsules travel at
760 mph (1,220 kph, Mach 0.91 at 68 ºF or 20 ºC).

Elon_Musk_Unvield_Hyperloop_Project_CubeMe04

Elon_Musk_Unvield_Hyperloop_Project_CubeMe05

Ashlee Vance from Bloomberg wrote: The tubes would, for the most part, follow Interstate 5, the dreary but direct freeway between Los Angeles and points near San Francisco. Farmers would not have swaths of their land blocked by train tracks but could instead access their land between the columns. Musk figures the Hyperloop could be built for $6 billion with people-only pods, or for $10 billion with the larger pods capable of holding cars. So in effect, he’s proposing an alternative that’s four times as fast and 1/10 the cost of the high-speed rail. Aparna Nancherla On Comedy, Twitter And Chris Rock

by Phil Davidson

Aparna Nancherla is a name we keep seeing on lists of the best up-and-coming comedians. And if you’ve seen her do standup, you know why.

Nancherla is a welcomed change of pace in an art form that is predominantly manic. Her jokes have an existential bent and are delivered at a slower, steadier pace, which allows audiences to pick up on the subtleties. The industry has taken notice as last year she was hired to write and perform on FX’s Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell, which moves from weekly to nightly on the FXX channel next month, so we’ll be seeing even more of her.

Nancherla is also coming off a run of stand-out performances at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, where she was one of the fest’s New Faces. I had the opportunity to sit down with Nancherla in Montreal and talk about her start in comedy, working for Chris Rock, and getting work through Twitter.

Read the rest at Splitsider.

Shelter for Books: Elegant Book House Redesigned by DeForest Architects

by Raphaelle

I LOVE this house AND it has a beautiful water view.

House Front Shelter for Books: Elegant Book House Redesigned by DeForest ArchitectsWhen two book lovers decide to upgrade their home, there’s a good chance that the house itself will become a shelter for books. DeForest Architects were asked to transform a common living environment into a lively home, filled with natural light. “It incorporates bookshelves and cozy seating areas throughout the house. Modern details complement traditional elements while steel windows, doors and exposed structure open the interior to light and views. The exterior features a ‘secret garden,” sunroom and terrace that overlook Lake Washington.” With a simple design line and distinctive decorations, the Book House is an elegant home, a shelter for happy thoughts and positive thinking.
Lovely View1 Shelter for Books: Elegant Book House Redesigned by DeForest ArchitectsInspiring and very relaxing, the Book House, with its interior and surroundings, feels lively and uncluttered. Neutral colours and earthy nuances dominate the living space. Most of the rooms incorporate bookshelves. The natural light played an important role in choosing this new modern design. The great thing of them all is that, most of the rooms are, somehow, envisioned as special places for reading. The view is one of these house’s major advantages. Waking up every morning to this is definitely rewarding and it feels just right. What do you think of it? Do you like it? Sophie Turner Adopted Sansa Stark's Direwolf After It 'Died'

If there is one thing the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire — and, by direct extension, HBO's Game of Thrones — is known for even among the most casual fans, it's George R. R. Martin's maddening penchant for eliminating even the most innocent and beloved of characters without a moment's notice.

Kansas City Man Commits Suicide, Leaves Behind a Website to Explain His Life & Death

by Justin Page

Kansas City-based Martin Manley (1953-2013), a former Kansas City Star sports journalist, committed suicide on the morning of his 60th birthday Thursday out in front of the Overland Park Police Department. Right after Martin died, his website MartinManleyLifeAndDeath.com went live, which included an explanation of why he came to this decision and many detailed write-ups about different aspects of his life.

I decided to end my life on August 15, 2013. Why that date? Because it’s my 60th birthday. Other than that, it’s arbitrary. But, I just heard a report about people being more likely to die on their birthday and it made a certain amount of sense to me – the perfect closure.

Billboard in Lima Harvests Drinking Water Out of Thin Air

by Barbara Porada

According to the UN, about 60% of the world’s population will be living in cities within the next 8 years – a human migration that adds more and more strain on cities’ sanitation and resources. One of these many urban centers is Lima, Peru, the second largest desert capital in the world that receives less than 2 inches of rain a year. Despite its nearly nonexistent rainfall, Peru has some of the highest atmospheric humidity anywhere – 98%.

The University of Engineering and Technology of Peru (UTEC) and an ad agency called Mayo DraftFCBand saw great opportunity in this invisible source of water and created a billboard that can capture this humidity and turn it into potable drinking water for nearby residents.

Read on to find out how it’s done.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Using reverse osmosis and a purifying process to cleanse the collected water droplets, UTEC’s billboard then stores the water in 20 liter tanks. The water is dispensed at the bottom of the structure by nearby residents, who have been able to collect 9,450 liters of clean drinking water from this single billboard in just 3 short months. These residents no longer have to rely on contaminated well water or worry about where their next clean drink will be coming from.

“They could put this in different places if possible in each village, in each town… the water that gives us life,” Francisco Quilca, a resident served by the billboard, told UTEC.

UN Deputy Chief Jan Eliasson says improving access to water can reduce maternal health issues, child mortality and overall poverty. With the implementation of more billboards like this one, Lima will not only be solving its water scarcity problem but many others that go hand-in-hand with it.

The Katie Couric Kerfuffle: Kim Kardashian Brings Her Beef to Instagram

by Brittney Stephens
Bartice

go katie?

Kim Kardashian hasn't done much social media sharing since giving birth to baby North West in July, but today the new mom took to Instagram to air a grievance about a baby gift that she received from talk show host Katie Couric. Kim posted a photo of the present that started it all - a sweet polka-dot nightgown from Barneys - with two ominous hashtags: "#IHateFakeMediaFriends #MayIHumblySuggestYouNotSendGiftsThenTalkSh*t."

Yikes. Well, here's a bit of backstory: Katie sent the gift to Kim and Kanye West last month, after North was born, but before her name was North (hence the comment about continuing "the K tradition"). However, this week In Touch magazine ran an interview with Katie in which she expressed confusion over the Kardashian phenomenon, saying, "I don’t understand - why are they so famous? I think it’s mostly teenage girls that are interested."

Clearly, Katie's comment has rubbed Kim the wrong way, but do you think it warrants an Instagram broadcast? Let us know below whether you're on Team Kim or Team Katie!

120th and Lenox and all but one person is white.

Barawine at 120th and Lenox has only been open about a week but apparently the outdoor cafe license is all in place for the boutique business.  This eatery located in the Mount Morris Park Histroric District appears to have had instant success since it opened and a Bespoke reader snapped the above photo last night of locals enjoying an early evening meal.  The rain will only last for today, so make sure to support all of Harlem's cafes such as Barawine when the weather gets better in the week.
