xxx 10 Free Software to Mount ISO CD or DVD Image Files as Virtual Drives

by HAL9000

It was the case for a long time that when you installed Windows or a game, watched a DVD movie, or installed an application onto your computer, you would have to insert the physical media into the computer’s optical drive to continue. Time moves on and new ways of doing things appear to make life [...]

Chest freezer kegerator conversion has six beers on tap

by Mike Szczys

keg-freezer-conversion

Drawing a pitcher of frosty cold beer out of your own keg fridge is a liberating feeling which [Danodemano2] can enjoy all the time since he pulled off this 6-tap chest freezer conversion. You won’t have to kill yourself to get it done, this image shows the custom cuff sitting between the chest freezer body and lid which is where all the added hardware is anchored.

Chest freezers are popular because they’re efficient. And let’s face it, if you’re going to devote an appliance to storing cold beer you better make certain it doesn’t drive up utility bills. That’s the reason for the rigid foam insulation around the ring, with the spray foam to ensure energy isn’t lost around the openings in the wooden frame.

This design goes above and beyond the functionality from the last offering we looked at. That one had a pretty nice tile job, but the finished wood contrasts the black freezer very nicely on this one. It’s the PC fan used for circulation and the properly terminated wiring that we really like. The one thing we wonder about is the feasibility of fitting all six corneilus kegs and the carbon dioxide tank into this beast.

Guardian: NSA still collecting Americans' online data under Obama administration

by Sarah Silbert

Today, The Guardian reported that the Obama administration has permitted the NSA to collect large amounts of Americans' online data -- including email records -- for more than two years. The government's metadata-collection program, first started during the Bush presidency, was discontinued in 2011, but it appears that information-monitoring processes have since been going strong.

This news comes courtesy of "secret documents" obtained by the publication, and the source indicates that the NSA specifically collected information involving "communications with at least one communicant outside the United States or for which no communicant was known to be a citizen of the United States," though the agency eventually received the green light to tap US residents as well. Earlier this month, reports surfaced claiming the NSA has been snooping on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon customers, and this latest leak only confirms what many already suspected: that there's still plenty we don't know about the details -- and the extent of -- the government's surveillance activities.

T-Mobile holding a press event July 10th, promises 'boldest moves yet'

by Brian Heater

Image

We're never ones to turn down a particularly intriguing teaser, so you can bet we'll be be there with bells on. T-Mobile's event's going down on July 10th in New York City. Beyond that, well, your guess is as good as ours. The minimalistic magenta invite promises that the carrier will be delivering its "boldest moves yet," via an image file titled, fittingly, "moonshot." Moon rockets? PlayStation Moves? BlackBerry Bolds? The sky's the limit, apparently.

Three UK now selling Samsung Galaxy Mega on its site, retail stores to offer it July 2nd

Call the United Kingdom home? Have a thing for overly large, unorthodox smartphones? Well then, today's a good day to be a Three customer -- or plan on being one soon. The carrier has announced that the Samsung Galaxy Mega will be up for grabs on its website starting today, while brick-and-mortar stores are expected to have it on shelves as soon as tomorrow. The enormous 6.3-inch handset is being offered in conjunction with a variety of monthly tariffs, and there's also an option that takes advantage of Three's new pay-as-you-go scheme. Better yet, the company says the Galaxy Mega is future-proof, as it'll be able to support its upcoming LTE network once it goes live. Just remember, though... Three UK is in absolutely no rush to flip that switch.

Scientists grow human liver from stem cells, hope to relieve transplant woes (video)

by Nicole Lee

Stem cells used to create human liver tissue

Stem cell research has resulted in several important breakthroughs in medicine, such as rebuilding the larynx and regenerating spinal cord connectors. Now the liver, one of the most highly sought after organs on the donor transplant list, could get some serious stem cell assistance as well. A team of scientists led by Takanori Takebe of Yokohama City University has successfully created a miniature version of the human liver with the help of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), which are derived from adult somatic cells. They developed the iPSC into generalized liver cells called hepatocytes, at which point the researchers mixed in endothelial cells and mesenchymal stem cells, left the petri dishes alone for a couple days, and voila -- an extremely tiny version of a human liver, said to be the first-ever functional human organ grown from stem cells, was born.

The liver "buds," as they're known, measure five millimeters long and are the sort you would find in human embryos shortly after fertilization. When implanted in mice, the baby livers managed to perform all the functions of their adult equivalents. The researchers' next step would be to generate liver buds that are a touch closer to normal liver tissue -- like the addition of bile ducts -- and to see if they can mass produce them by the tens of thousands. Don't go wasting your liver just yet though, as it'll likely be years before the likes of you and me will be able to have a lab-grown liver in our bodies. In the meantime, check out the time-lapse video after the break to see a young liver bud take shape in a petri dish.

Samsung's estimated Q2 2013 profits top out at $8.33 billion

by Michael Gorman

Right on schedule, Samsung has released its earnings estimates for Q2 2013 ahead of its full announcement later this month. And, as you might expect, the company made a lot of money: a tidy profit of 9.5 trillion won, or $8.33 billion dollars, to be exact. Naturally, that record-setting number is due in no small part to the success of the Galaxy S 4 and a strong showing by its components division as well. Should the estimate prove perfectly accurate, Q2 2013 will have been a significant improvement over last quarter's $6.4 billion profit, and a massive $3 billion improvement over Q2 of 2012. Of course, we'll get to see its full slate of numbers come July 26th when the financials are officially revealed, but it's looking like Sammy's doing just fine.

MetroPCS teases Galaxy S 4 launch next week

by Jon Fingas

Samsung Galaxy S 4 at sharp angle

We've known for a while that a MetroPCS-friendly version of Samsung's Galaxy S 4 was in the cards, but the carrier hasn't been very forthcoming with its plans. At least, until now -- the company just posted a teaser on Twitter for a Samsung-based launch next week. While the text is slightly cryptic, the mention of a Galaxy S III "+1" makes it quite clear that the 2013 Galaxy flagship is what's on deck. This variant won't have HSPA for the T-Mobile network, at least if it's anything like what we saw at the FCC, but it should include LTE support. Let's just hope that the phone ships quickly -- MetroPCS customers have been waiting long enough.

3D printable Drone It Yourself kit turns mundane objects into flying machines (video)

by Melissa Grey

DNP 3D printable DIY drone kit turns mundane objects into flying machines

These days, drones are all the rage. Now, you can make your own with this handy Drone It Yourself kit from designer Jasper van Loenen. Droneifying (it's a word now) your belongings is a relatively straightforward procedure; all you need is a 3D printer and the ability to follow simple instructions. Once you've printed the control unit and four motorized propellers, you can clamp them to whatever object you wish to make airborne. Technically, your homemade flying device would be an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, but Drone-It-Yourself has such a nice ring to it. To watch van Loenen's kit in action, check out the video after the break.

NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden offered asylum in Venezuela

by Richard Lawler

DNP NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden tktktk

Now that PRISM leaker Edward Snowden has spent a few days in Russia with a US extradition request looming over him, WikiLeaks legal advisor Sarah Harrison has submitted asylum applications and requests for asylum assistance to a raft of countries on his behalf. The first to step up to the plate is apparently Venezuela, as it's president Nicolas Maduro stated during a parade that it has rejected US requests for extradition and will offer him political and humanitarian asylum. Nicaraguan president Daniel Ortega previously said his country would offer Snowden asylum "if circumstances permit."

Kisai Intoxicated Breathalyzer Watch tells you when to call a cab

by Chris

I think we’ve all had one of those days where you need to spend a bit of time with a few friends and a good stiff drink. Once you’ve had a chance to unwind and forget all of your day’s troubles, you still need to head home. The smart thing to do is to make sure that you have a designated driver, but we all have that friend that insists they don’t need one. So how exactly do you prove to your good friend that they’re intoxicated beyond the legal limit? Just have them blow into your watch.

No, don’t have them blow into just any watch, or else they might thing you’re the one who has been drinking too much. What you need is the Kisai Intoxicated Breathalyzer Watch from TokyoFlash. This mobile timepiece does more than just keep track of the hour. Once you pop open the sensor cap, you’ll just have your friend blow a little air in, and in just five seconds, you’ll get a reading. There are 10 different levels of BAC (blood alcohol content) shown on the screen, and the results will be shown in green, yellow, or red, depending on your level of sobriety.

If you’re not sure that the results are accurate, TokyoFlash built in a sobriety mini-game into the watch. There is a row of blocks that slides back-and-forth on the screen. All you need to do is hit the button on the face of the watch when the blocks line up in the middle of the screen. If you can’t do it, you might be impaired (or just have poor hand-eye coordination).

Aside from the special features, the watch has a unique interface, which is typical of TokyoFlash watches. This one uses the negative space between rows of blocks to depict the current hour and minute. The Kisai Intoxicated Breathalyzer Watch has a stainless steel body, and recharges with an included USB cable. You can pre-order it now for $149, and it will ship on July 8th.

The Athletes’ Village Fire Pit Globe

by Edwin

I am quite sure that many of us have heard of the Olympics before, and most of us would have had watched the opening and closing ceremonies on via a TV broadcast before, while a smaller number among us are blessed enough to be able to attend the opening and closing ceremonies in person. As for the Winter Olympics, that is a lesser known event with a smaller number of following for obvious reasons – not all countries experience winter. Well, for those who still have fond memories of the fire pit which was on show at the Athletes’ Village during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics will be pleased to hear that a hand-crafted replica in the form of the $1,700 Athletes’ Village Fire Pit Globe is now available.

Sporting a unique globe-shaped design, it comes with cutouts in the shapes of the different continents, where it will evoke the international spirit of the Games while doubling up as a warm gathering place whenever your family and friends meet. The Athletes’ Village Fire Pit Globe has been individually crafted by Rick Wittrig, who happens to be a functional steel artist who picked up welding and blacksmithing techniques as he grew up in a Mennonite community. The fire pit itself has been forged from the pits of Mount Doom – nay, I’m kidding, but rather, from heavy-gauge 1/4″-thick carbon steel.

Tiger Shark Warplane Ceiling Fan looks like a P-40 Warhawk crashed through your roof

by Chris

When I was a kid, one of my dreams was to become a pilot. I blame the movie Top Gun for most of that desire, but my heart wasn’t necessarily set on an F-14 Tomcat, anything that could fly was good enough for me. Airplane, helicopter, space ship, it really didn’t matter. Naturally, this meant that I had a lot of toys of these various flying vehicles. While these things made me happy, I’d have loved just about anything flying-related in my room, including furniture.

If you have a kid that’s anything like I was, then I would highly recommend checking out this cool Tiger Shark Warplane Ceiling Fan. When I first looked at it, I realized just how brilliant the design was. The fan is designed to look like the nose of an old P-40 fighter, which, if you know your jets, had a three-bladed propeller on it. They captured many of the details of the fighter, right down to the shape and coloring of the blades.

Other than the resemblance to a World War II fighter jet, there really isn’t that much that sets this ceiling fan apart from the rest. IT has a 3-speed motor, and uses a 60-watt candelabra bulb for illuminating your room. The $261 price tag is a rather hefty premium over your standard ceiling fan, but can you really put a price on a child’s happiness?

3D Printed Cast could assist in recovery process

by Edwin

For those of you who have had the unfortunate experience of going through the healing process after breaking one (or more) of your limbs, you would know the uncomfortable feeling you get whenever your hand (or the affected limb) is placed in a cast. These tend to be bulky most of the time, and they also double up as a blank canvas for friends to leave goodwill messages, although some of the more mischievous ones among your circle might just opt to leave embarrassing sketches instead without having to answer for them. The thing is, those are small payoffs for the healing process to ensure that your bone sets properly, while plaster and fiberglass variants also do their job well without costing an arm and a leg, which indirectly results in a whole lot less investment where innovation is concerned. Jake Evill is one to do something about the situation after being saddled with a plaster cast for a few months himself, where the “smelly and itchy plaster” bothered him so much, he decided to think of a solution of his own. Voila! A 3D-printed brace which would now be able to follow the contours of the arm.

This 3D printed brace might remain a concept as at press time, but Evill’s Cortex (as he has called it) might just have an extremely bright future ahead of it, thanks to it being an injury-localized exoskeleton which is not only lightweight, but washable, ventilated and recyclable to boot.

Evill was inspired by nature to churn out this design after doing some research on the human bone, and realized that the trabecular – tiny lattice-shaped structures which form the inner tissue of a bone, is the design he had been looking for all this while. Evill said, “It was this honeycomb structure that inspired the Cortex pattern because, as usual, nature has the best answers. This natural shape embodied the qualities of being strong whilst light just like the bone it is protecting within.”

Hopefully this denser, less ventilated material will become more and more mainstream and accepted in medical circles in the future, and when that happens, we own Jake Evill a big round of applause and thanks.

The Growler City Bike

by Ben Dahl

It’s been a while since we were generally taken aback by a bicycle. Joey Ruiter’s Growler City Bike concept is mind-blowingly cool. The entire bike came into being when Ruiter set out to build a bike around a growler from a local pub. 29er fat wheel set, monarch springer front end, two speed internal kickback hub and disc brakes fill out the murdered out commuter bike technically, but what really sets us off (other than the whole “transporting a growler ...

Titanium Bolt Action Pen

A good pen is an investment. Unfortunately, that investment is usually in a writing instrument that is, as best we can put it, “stuffy.” The Titanium Bolt Action pen is not. Designed by Rainer Wenning and knifemaker Thomas Braunagel, the Titanium Bolt Action Pen is as fine a writing device as it is a self-defense tool. The pen features a bolt action mechanism, a flat head thumb rest for use as a weapon, and a stylish clip integrated design to ...

Daneson Single Malt Toothpicks

Skooba Cable Stable

by mark

I do a lot of traveling for Engadget. I go to a lot of conferences, and I bring my Skooba Cable Stable with me on all my trips. It looks like a standard binder bag. Inside, there are elastic straps for corralling all of the different things I need as a 24-hour blogger who shoots and produces web video on the go.

It’s got my Verizon Jetpack modem, battery charger, Ethernet cable, Elgato turbo stick (a great way to crunch up video and upload it quickly), various USB cords, some shammies, assorted flash drives, my business cards, and some pens (because every once in a while you do actually need to write things on paper). It’s pretty decently padded, and you could probably fit a 7-inch tablet in there as well.

For a very long time, I just had a jumbled mess of cords in my bag. My new year’s resolution was to be more organized. This is the closest I’ll probably come to being able to do that.

Skooba makes very rugged things. I’ve had cases by them that have lasted me for years. I would say this has been a game changer for me. It has completely changed the way I do shows.
