Simple Meditations to Remind Us All to Keep Being Awesome

by Caroline Williamson

Simple Meditations to Remind Us All to Keep Being Awesome

You might have seen Paper Jam Press’s simple, black & white posters featuring rap lyrics across the internetz at some point. Now, Arianna Orland (of Paper Jam Press) is the latest to partner with moo.com on The Luxe Project. The Luxe Project is an initiative that works with designers and showcases their moo.com designs for a month with 100% of the net proceeds going to the designer’s charity of choice. (Remember the ones that Sagmeister & Walsh did?) Well, Paper Jam is the current project and it takes 10 different phrases inspired by rap songs and prints them on a set of 50 customizable business cards.

The cards are what Arianna describes as, “simple meditations to remind us all to keep being awesome.” The phrases are not only catchy, they’re nice little catchphrases we should all keep in mind, right?

Since the collection was inspired by music, Arianna chose VH1 Save the Music Foundation as her charity of choice.

Suburb-Terranean: 70s Bunker Home Simulates Day & Night

by Urbanist
[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

underground bunker home

It is a dream home like any other of its era, with brick walls, sliding doors, stock windows and shingle roofs as well as a lawn, garden, trees and pool. The difference? It is set two stories underground in Las Vegas, Nevada, where the faux flora never wilts nor does it grow, and it is for sale.

underground home day night

If this real-life 1970s home seems like something out of a science-fiction movie, you may be remembering the film Blast from the Past, in which the protagonist spends decades underground in vintage fallout shelter styled after a mid-century suburban home and garden.

underground house kitchen pool

Listed at 1.7 million dollars, this foreclosed property looks conventional at street level, but hides a stunning set of secret spaces below, including two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a kitchen and every other space you would expect inside and outside of a single-family house on the surface.

Folded Record Bureau by HM HandMade

Folded Record Bureau by HM HandMade

I’m one of those people that still listens to vinyl and I’m not ashamed to admit it. There’s something about the crackling, lo-fi sound that only comes from playing a record and it totally reminds me of my childhood (ok, I’m old). One of my favorite things growing up was my parent’s stereo console that had all the audio components fit into a piece of furniture, including the record player. So seeing the Folded Record Bureau made me want to bust out my vinyl, sit back, and listen all afternoon. Designed by UK-based Hugh Miller of HM HandMade, the piece combines the compact beauty of the old console units with storage for your collection, all in one modern package.

Folded Record Bureau by HM HandMade in technology home furnishings Category

The piece mixes Miller’s three favorite things – wood, vinyl, and 80′s styling. He uses solid Iroko wood that appears to be folded to form the low bureau. Set within the top is a 1985 Bang and Olufsen turntable that’s built right into the wood seamlessly.

The folded planks of wood punch through the top to help form an angled shelf underneath for record storage.

4-Dimensional Photography: Artistic Time-Lapse Collages

by Urbanist
Simple Simon

Whoa! This is really spectacular!

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

time lapse day night

Motion pictures aside, the nature of photographic representation implies freezing space in time – a moment captured and preserved, independent of what comes before or after.

time lapse photo rays

time lapse vertical sky

Yet, as photographer Fong Qi Wei points out, “we do know that time is also a dimension, like length, breadth and width. In fact, physicists have a model called space-time: suggesting that time is part of a continuum with the 3 dimensions that we are familiar with. But the print is still an instance. Most paintings and photographs are an instance of time. That’s not the way the world works. We experience a sequence of time.”

time elapsed photo seeries

time lapse rays light

His solution is this photo series, Time is a Dimension, in composed mostly of “landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes,” which “are a single composite made from sequences that span 2-4 hours, mostly of sunrises and sunsets. The basic structure of a landscape is present in every piece[, but] each panel or concentric layer shows a different slice of time, which is related to the adjacent panel/layer. The transition from daytime to night is gradual and noticeable in every piece, but would not be something you expect to see in a still image.”

time lapse waterfront attraction

time lapse urban landscape

There is a playful and experimental quality to the variety of approaches found within this set of images. Sometimes a series of casually-drawn circles spread out from a focal point. In other cases, rays like a child’s drawing of sunshine span from some implied but out-of-frame source. Each has at least one surprise upon inspection, like the changing reflections in glass over the course of a day, or the differences in artificial illumination going into the night. Overall, the results are rich in colors and shades but also do tell a story of time elapsing, quite by design.

[ch]air by Alexander O.D. Lorimer

by Caroline Williamson

[ch]air by Alexander O.D. Lorimer

[ch]air, designed by Alexander O.D. Lorimer, is a chair made from laser-cut ‘zig zag’ strips of cast acrylic that are assembled together to form the delicate looking frame. The geometric base of acrylic was inspired by the geometry of soap bubbles and how they cluster into formation. The structure appears so lightweight and fragile, yet the way each piece is designed and placed together, it’s able to support the weight of a person.

[ch]air by Alexander O.D. Lorimer in home furnishings Category

A single bubble encloses the maximum volume of space with the least possible surface area of soap bubble film, forming a near perfect sphere. As bubbles merge together to form clusters they reorganise their geometries immediately, sharing partitions to ensure maximum efficiency in terms of the ratio between bubble cell volume and total surface area. In these clusters all bubble cell edges meet at a vertex, four at a time, at 109.5 degree angles.

Ghost Architecture: Unconscious Art of Building Demolition

by Urbanist
[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

void building architectural photos

When a free-standing building is razed there is often little left to tell its story, but in places where structures directly abut one another there are sometimes amazing traces of not just buildings but floor plans, wall placements, staircases and even room contents.

void building demolition art

Like architectural section drawings, remnant spaces can be extrapolated from two-dimensional clues, like material transitions, degree of weathering, surface shapes and color shifts. Occasionally, there are even three-dimensional fixtures still hanging on, like the showers, sinks and toilets in one of the pictures above.

ghost void building

The Unconscious Art of Demolition is a Flickr photography group that focuses on these accidental works of ghost architecture – leftover structural voids and the spaces they imply.

void structure implied volume

In the process of observing and photographing, these passers by and onlookers are turned into amateur documentarians and de facto archaeologists, discerning and (at least subconsciously) projecting patterns into ambiguous urban decay.

void architecture building examples

Some take an abstract approach, zooming in on the rich materials where parts of walls were left and other pieces ripped away. Others take a broader focus, highlighting building outlines and implied interiors. Still others capture works of street art placed within the flat landscapes one can imagine inside of these non-buildings.

Abandoned Quarry to Ice World: Pit Reclaimed as Resort

by Steph
Simple Simon

Rubislaw quarry??

[ By Steph in Global & Travel & Places. ]

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 1

China is set to get yet another quarry-turned-resort in an ambitious project by Coop Himmelb(l)au architecture, transforming an abandoned mining pit into an artificial icy landscape with an indoor skiing center and a cantilevered outdoor swimming pool. The Deep Pit Ice and Snow World at Dawang Mountain Resort near Changsha, China will also include a 100-meter-tall hotel with over 300 rooms looking out over Tongxi Lake and Dawang Mountain.

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 2

Spanning 170 meters cliff-to-cliff of what is currently an abandoned cement quarry, the resort will offer both cold-weather and warm-weather recreational opportunities, with the icy and snowy attractions inside a sculpted shell. Beneath this volume will be a sunken garden featuring cliffside pathways, ponds and islands. A central glass cone will cut through the building to bring natural daylight into this subterranean space.

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 3

A 60-meter (196 feet) waterfall will crash from the cantilevered outdoor swimming pool on the edge of the quarry, deep into the pit. From inside the Snow and Ice World, visitors can peer through large glass facades onto the watery landscape filled with greenery.

Abandoned Quarry Resort China 4

The project is very similar to the Shimao Intercontinental Hotel (pictured above), a 19-story, 5-star hotel located deep within a 328-foot abandoned quarry near the base of Tianmashan Mountain near Shanghai. Though the concept seemed too crazy to be true, construction has already begun. That resort will include an aquarium, restaurants, and recreational activities taking advantage of the unique landscape, like rock climbing and water-based sports.

Overcoming “Impostor Syndrome”

by behanceteam

9347064966_0e52de26fe_z

Impostor Syndrome is feeling like you’re not worthy of whatever success you’ve had. You feel that you’ll be “found out” at any second.

Students don’t just feel this. Everyone encounters this at some points. But why? Why do we feel like this? Dr. Valerie Young says that, “The thing about ‘impostors’ is they have unsustainably high standards for everything they do. The thinking here is, If I don’t know everything, then I know nothing. If it’s not absolutely perfect, it’s woefully deficient. If I’m not operating at the top of my game 24/7, then I’m incompetent.”
