Nintendo looks to boost Wii U's prospects with more Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda
Nintendo's timeless characters are the most powerful weapon in the company's arsenal, so it's no surprise to see them called upon to reverse Wii U's troubling retail performance. To boost its console's momentum in the months ahead, Nintendo today announced several new games that include two Mario-related titles (Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8).
Super Mario 3D World will allow four-player cooperative multiplayer gaming with a cast of characters pulled directly from Super Mario Bros. 2 — yes, the NES game. Gamers will be able to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach or Toad when the title ships this December. Each character has unique abilities that were also first seen in Nintendo's NES classic. And there's a new "Cat" power up that does...

Nicaragua plans to one-up Panama with a massive canal of its own
The Panama Canal may be getting a neighbor just two countries to the north. According to the Associated Press, the Nicaraguan government is moving forward with a plan that would construct a canal holding twice the capacity of Panama's, aimed at bridging the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Nicaragua's government has yet to finalize the construction plans, but the canal would be completed in about 11 years and will almost certainly be routed through Lake Nicaragua, a large body of water on the western side of the country.

Elastic Living: Sliding Shelves Hide Modular Rooms
Does maintaining a sizable amount of your living space for a single purpose that’s only required for a short period each day really make sense? What if you could simply switch out the function? ‘Elastic Living’ by Italian furniture maker CLEI makes it possible to do just that with sliding shelving units for different purposes that can be moved out of the way when you don’t need them.
The modular spaces all fit together into one big rectangular box when not in use. Need the kitchen? Slide it out, cook, and then put it back up when you’re done. The same goes for the living room, bedroom, bathroom, home office, gym and closets.
Inspired by library wall racks, the series contains seven different room functions that can easily be ‘filed away.’ It’s meant for a large, open space, like a loft or warehouse, and would be less practical for a home that’s already divided into different rooms.
CLEI is known for transformable furniture that fits lots of function into tight spaces. See more compact, modular furniture including 10 pieces of clever transforming furniture and mini, mobile kitchens.

Here’s a taste of the articles to come this week: newlywed Matt Yglesias will make the case for ending the unfair and outdated practice of wedding presents. John Dickerson was annoyed at his parents for wanting to invite all their friends to his wedding—17 years later, he’s had a change of heart, and explains why. We’ll also have not one, but two Dear Prudie features on weddings, a dedicated column of wedding advice as well a special edition podcast. Farhad Manjoo will convince you it’s OK to send digital wedding invites, while Rachael Larimore will explode all of your stereotypes about the kind of bride who gets married at Disney World. Various Projections for the Economy of China 2030
The slowdown in May’s trade figures was partly the result of “arbitrage trade” with Hong Kong being curbed, the customs administration said in a statement yesterday. Appreciation in the yuan and the worsening trade environment, as well as a domestic slowdown, weak external demand and high business costs.
There are several longterm forecasts for China's economy.
World Bank Forecast for China now to 2030
China’s long-term outlook is expected to be shaped by three structural transformations that are key in terms of their potential impact onto the developing world. The first among these is a gradual structural slowdown that China is expected to undergo, as the economy’s traditional engines of growth fade in strength. The second transformation concerns a change in China’s economic structure, where the patterns of expenditure, production, and employment are all expected to change significantly as China rebalances. The third transformation involves the technological sophistication and human capital intensity of production as China is expected to respond to rising wage pressures by moving up the value chain, and, while doing so, also redefine its competitive advantage in the global marketplace.
