Paul Rolly, "Blogger fired from language school over 'homophonia'", The Salt Lake Tribune, 7:29/2014:

Homophones, as any English grammarian can tell you, are words that sound the same but have different meanings and often different spellings — such as be and bee, through and threw, which and witch, their and there.  

This concept is taught early on to foreign students learning English because it can be confusing to someone whose native language does not have that feature.

But when the social-media specialist for a private Provo-based English language learning center wrote a blog explaining homophones, he was let go for creating the perception that the school promoted a gay agenda.

The fired teacher is Tim Torkildson, and he wrote a blog post about the experience — "The Homophones Got Me! A Record of a Recent Firing", 7/24/2014:

This week I was fired for writing a blog about homophones for an educational website.  

“I’m letting you go because I can’t trust you” said Clarke Woodger, my boss and the owner of Nomen Global Language Center.  “This blog about homophones was the last straw.  Now our school is going to be associated with homosexuality.”  

I said nothing, stunned into silence.  

“I had to look up the word” he continued, “because I didn’t know what the hell you were talking about.  We don’t teach this kind of advanced stuff to our students, and it’s extremely inappropriate.  Can you have your desk cleaned out by eleven this morning?  I’ll have your check ready.”  

I nodded, mute.  

“Good.  You’ve done a good job on most things, but you’re just not reliable enough.  I never have any idea what you’re going to do next.  I can’t run my business that way. You’d probably make a great college professor, but since you don’t have a degree you’ll never get that kind of work.  I would advise you to try something clerical, where you’ll be closely supervised and have immediate goals at all times.  That’s the only kind of job you’ll ever succeed at.  I’ll be happy to give you a good reference.  Good-bye, and good luck.”

The Salt Lake Tribune article quotes Mr. Woodger's public position on the affair:

Woodger says his reaction to Torkildson’s blog has nothing to do with homosexuality but that Torkildson had caused him concern because he would "go off on tangents" in his blogs that would be confusing and sometimes could be considered offensive.  

Nomen is Utah’s largest private English as a Second Language school and caters mostly to foreign students seeking admission to U.S. colleges and universities. Woodger says his school has taught 6,500 students from 58 countries during the past 15 years. Most of them, he says, are at basic levels of English and are not ready for the more complicated concepts such as homophones.

"People at this level of English," Woodger says, " … may see the ‘homo’ side and think it has something to do with gay sex."

It's depressing to think that "foreign students seeking admission to U.S. colleges and universities" are not generally "ready for the more complicated concepts such as homophones" — what will they do when they get to one of those colleges and universities, and are confronted with homogenization, homomorphisms,  homotopy, Homo sapiens, or (FSM help us) Homo erectus?

In fact, the opportunities for this kind of misunderstanding can even be trans-lexical:

Returning to Mr. Rolly's Salt Lake Tribune article, I wonder if there is really any language that "does not have that feature" (by which I mean homophones). I'd be surprised.

Update — incisive commentary by Dale Carpenter at the Volokh Conspiracy — "The Homophone Menace":

“Our hour has come,” proclaim the militant homophones. “We are discrete but no longer discreet.” They threaten to uproot heteronymativity.  

This leaves many to suspect the real homophone addenda.  They want same-pronunciation marriage. The possibility is much discussed and elicits much disgust. “They have no right to that rite,” writes Wright.  “Chris will marry Chris, Pat will wed Pat, and Dale betroth Dale. What’s next, polynomial marriage?”

Since intelligent people are not a protected group under U.S. employment law, Mr. Woodger was apparently on solid legal ground in firing Torkildson. But presumably concern about this issue explains the apparently contradiction between Woodger's assertion that "his reaction to Torkildson’s blog has nothing to do with homosexuality" and his observation that "People at this level of English … may see the ‘homo’ side and think it has something to do with gay sex."

From the Log comments, I have to agree with Yuval, who said “How, HOW, did he miss the (rated) PG pun?” and with Matt‘s complaint about the price (“maybe someone at OUP will decide to ride this towering wave of publicity by offering a pre-order discount?”) — it boggles my mind that someone responded “290 pages at £65 for a hardback academic book seems quite affordable.” O RLY? I guess for those who enjoy Pétrus with their foie gras.

New Cyanide and Happiness Comic.

The *Bʰlog is “a website that hopes to provide an accessible but informed forum for all matters Indo-European”:

The idea for this website arose in the Fall of 2013, when two fables that I recorded for Archaeology Magazine went viral and were heard by hundreds of thousands of people who had never even heard of Proto-Indo-European or the Indo-European language family. The goal of the website is to keep that interest going. If you’re a layperson, feel free to send an e-mail to the *Bʰlog with questions you might have about Indo-European. If you’re a specialist and want to contribute to the site, just let me know and I will set you up an account.

It’s run by University of Kentucky linguist Andrew Byrd and vouched for by Piotr Gąsiorowski (from whose post I learned about it), so I have no hesitation in recommending it and will add it to my blogroll forthwith.

In the course of the Gaza war, several key European leaders have made tough, sensible statements supporting Israel’s right to defend itself and demanding a cease fire that does not give in to Hamas demands. Chancellor Merkel said Germany “stand[s] by the side of Israel” and noted that the weapons used by Hamas were of “a completely new quality.” French President Hollande said Israel had the right to use “all the necessary measures” to protect itself from rockets and missiles. Britain’s new Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said “Everybody in the UK and the west is appalled by the scenes coming out of Gaza but every country has the right to defend itself against attack.”

But that is only half the story. Not one of those three countries could bring itself to vote against a foul and vicious resolution in the UN Human Rights Council this week. Every single European country that is a Council member abstained: Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Romania and the United Kingdom.

The resolution included this language:

Noting the systematic failure by Israel to carry out genuine investigations in an impartial, independent, prompt and effective way, as required by international law, on violence and offences carried out against Palestinians by the occupying forces and settlers and to establish judicial accountability over its military actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem,

Deploring the massive Israeli military operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, since 13 June 2014, which have involved disproportionate and indiscriminate attacks and resulted in grave violations of the human rights of the Palestinian civilian population, including through the most recent Israeli military assault on the occupied Gaza Strip, the latest in a series of military aggressions by Israel,

Condemns in the strongest terms the widespread, systematic and gross violations of international human rights and fundamental freedoms arising from the Israeli military operations carried out in the Occupied Palestinian Territory since 13 June 2014, particularly the latest Israeli military assault in the occupied Gaza Strip, by air, land and sea, which has involved disproportionate and indiscriminate attacks,

Calls for an immediate cessation of Israeli military assaults throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and an end to attacks against all civilians, including Israeli civilians;

Decides to urgently dispatch an independent, international commission of inquiry, to be appointed by the President of the Human Rights Council, to investigate all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, particularly in the occupied Gaza Strip, in the context of the military operations conducted since 13 June 2014….

Well, you get the idea: this is a biased, one-sided, mendacious resolution. The word “Hamas” is not mentioned. The firing of thousands of rockets into Israel is not mentioned. The massive system of attack tunnels through which Hamas terrorists have entered Israel is not mentioned. The fact that Hamas hides weapons in U.N. schools is not mentioned.

So Western democracies should not have abstained; they should have called this resolution the offensive and useless piece of work that it is. They apparently tried to “improve” the text so that they could vote for it, but when that failed they chickened out. Having worked in those UN precincts for many years, it seems obvious to me that one reason the EU can so rarely persuade the Arab group to amend its drafts enough to be acceptable is that the Arabs know the EU will never oppose them. It should be obvious that only a series of “No” votes will move the Arabs, but the EU does not dare. Instead it takes a position where moral clarity is absent and the UN Human Rights Council becomes as biased and as worthless as its predecessor, the UN Human Rights Commission, which was finally shut down in 2006.

It should be clear that the Council is no better. In 2008, the Bush administration abandoned observer status at the Council, with the State Department spokesman accurately calling it “pathetic” and “almost solely focused on bashing Israel.” Unfortunately the Obama administration quickly joined up again in 2009, with the excuse that American participation would so obviously change things. Call it an experiment.

Has it worked? In this vote on the Gaza resolution,  the United States was again completely isolated in voting “No.” The Council has since its creation in 2007 passed 50 resolutions against Israel, almost exactly the same number it has passed about every other human rights issue in every other country in the entire world, so it is no improvement on its predecessor.

The United States erred in joining up in 2009, and the returns are in. The experiment failed. Until the Council stops its biased and one-sided actions, and stops throwing fuel on the flames in the Middle East, we should disengage. Council members such as China, Cuba, and Russia (yes, all three are amazingly enough members of the Human Rights Council!) will not recognize moral clarity, but very many Americans will.

 והנה מה שאיליה כתב (לאחר עריכה מסויימת מצידי) בסטטוס פייסבוק שלו: בזמן האחרון אני פוגש טענות רבות על כך שצהל תוקף פלסטינים ללא אבחנה מנתוני הערוץ אל ג'זירה אנו מקבלים תמונה שבה הרוב המוחלט של ההרוגים הם בגילאי חיול. עם זאת, טענת האקראיות אינה מסתדרת בכלל, במקרה זה, עם הנתונים הדמוגרפיים של עזה, ולכן עבדכם הנאמן החליט לבצע מספר חישובים פשוטים על מנת לבדוק את הטענות על חוסר אבחנה בין מעורבים לבלתי מעורבים. ראשית נבחן את גודלה של האוכלוסייה בעזה, המספר הזה עומד על כ-1,805,000 נפשות (הערכה מ-2010 ונתוני גידול). גודלם של אירגונים חמושים כאלה ואחרים ברצועה מוערך בכ-25,000  (על סמך נתוני החמאס). מכאן, כמות הבלתי מעורבים בעזה היא כ-1,780,000. ברגע כתיבת שורות אלו מספר ההרוגים הערבים בעזה הוא כ-572 בהתפלגות של 28% מעורבים ו-72% בלתי מעורבים, על פי מקורות זרים (מקורות ישראלים טוענים ליחס של 30% ל-70%) ולכן ,בחישוב פשוט ,ההסתברות להיהרג על ידי צהל אם הינך טרוריסט הינה 0.0064 ואם הינך בלתי מעורב ההסתברות שלך להיהרג על ידי צהל עומדת על 0.000247. לכן ההסתברות שלך להיהרג על ידי צהל ברצועה אם הינך מחבל היא פי 28.48 גדולה יותר מבלתי מעורב! נשאלת השאלה על ידי תמימים למינהם ,שלא יודעים מה זה הסתברות, "אז כיצד יש יותר אזרחים הרוגים "? התשובה היא מאוד פשוטה, רוב רובם של אנשי הרצועה הם בלתי מעורבים, מחבלים מהווים רק כ-1.39% מתושבי הרצועה. נעשה תרגיל מחשבתי קטן: נניח וצהל היה פוגע ללא הבחנה בעזה, בהתבסס על כך שיש רק 1.39% מחבלים באוכלוסיה היינו מקבלים שמתוך 572 הרוגים היינו אמורים לקבל רק 8 מחבלים הרוגים (במקום ה- 160 שנהרגו)! יחס הרוגים כזה ויחס הסתברויות שכזה מצביע על מאמצים ניכרים של צהל למקד את הירי במחבלים, ולשמור על חיי בלתי מעורבים. לצורך ההשוואה, רצוי לעיין בקישורים על יחס הרוגים /בלתי מעורבים בקונפליקטים דומים, השוואה רלוונטית למשל היא הקרב בפאלוג'ה (צבא מערבי בשטח אורבני שבו מחבלים מסתתרים בין האוכלוסיה, למרות ששם הרוב נמלט לפני הקרב, בהבדל מעזה) ותקיפות אוויריות אמריקאיות בפאקיסטן.

הערה נוספת (של טל גלילי): המדד הסטטיסטי שחושב כאן מכונה יחס-הסיכויים (Odds Ratio). הוא משמש בהקשרים של מחקרים רפואיים ואפידמיולוגיים. ערכים גדולים מ- 1 מעידים על קשר משמעותי בין "גורם החשיפה" לבין "התוצאה". במקרה הזה, בין האם מישהו הוא מחבל או לא, לבין האם סביר יותר שהוא ימות סביב ההתקפה. משתמשים במדד הזה פעמים רבות בהקשר של מחקרי מקרה-ביקורת, למרות שאפשר גם להשתמש בו ב"מחקרי חתך" (כפי שמבוצע במקרה שלפנינו – pun not intended).

הטענה שפוגעים ללא אבחנה היא טענה מטופשת ומקוממת ואכן חסרת ביסוס, כמו שהפוסט הזה מראה.
אם כבר טענה רלוונטית יכולה להיות שצה"ל לא נמנע מספיק מהרג אזרחים בזמן שהוא פוגע בלוחמים. לדוגמא לכוון ללוחם אבל להתעלם מהאזרחים באיזור שיפגעו מסביר מדוע לוחמים נפגעים הרבה יותר מחלקם היחסי באוכלוסיה אבל מדוע גם הרבה מאוד אזרחים נפגעים.
פלוס יש בהערכות צה"ל הנחה סמויה שאם אדם בגיל חיול זה אומר שהוא לוחם. היא בעייתית כי אצלהם אין גיוס חובה ולא כול אדם בגיל המתאים יהיה לוחם. הנחה שנרמזת גם בפוסט הזה, למרות הנתון על זה שמחבלים מהווים 1.39% מתושבי הרצועה, בגלל ההדגשה על כך שמרבית ההרוגים הם בגיל חיול.
גם בהקשר אותה הנחה סמויה ההערכות של צה"ל על 30% לא מעורבים פשוט לא סבירות בעליל. נכון לעכשיו* מדובר על 620 הרוגים מתוכם 419 גברים בגיל "המתאים". כלומר אפילו אם היינו מניחים שכל גבר בגיל המתאים הוא מחבל, מה שבהכרח לא נכון, עדיין היה מדובר על יותר אזרחים הרוגים משצה"ל מודה בהם לפי הסטטוס הזה.

בתכלס אני בעיקר סומכת על הערכות של בצלם, למרות שמדובר רק בתחקיר ראשוני.

לפי זה מבין 505 הרוגים שנבדקו 281 היו גברים בגילאים הרלוונטים, מתוכם רק 102 היו מעורבים בלחימה.
בהקשר זה אציין שהגדרת "מעורב בלחימה" של בצלם מבוססת על זו של הצלב האדום וכוללת גם אנשים שמעורבים בלחימה מתמשכת, כגון פעילי הזרוע הצבאית בחמאס, גם אם לא עסקו בלחימה ברגע הפגיעה בהם.

פלוס ההערכות של גורמים שאינם מעורבים ישירות (כלומר לא חמאס ולא צה""ל) אומרות שאזרחים מהווים בין 70% ל80% מההרוגים. מעבר לזאת של בצלם שהבאתי פה.
יחס של 3 ל1 או אפילו 4 ל1 הוא כבר יחס דומה להערכות בלינקים לויקיפדיה שמצורפים לפוסט. כלומר לא ניתן להסיק על מאמצים חסרי תקדים של צהל לשמור על חיי בלתי מעורבים ולא על ירי חסר אבחנה באוכלוסיה.

אתמול בבוקר ה-CDC פרסם הודעה לקונית למדי על כך שבמהלך התארגנות למעבר דירה נמצאו כמה מבחנות מסומנות בתגית "variola" במעבדה ישנה.

ואריולה הוא הוירוס שגורם לאבעבועות שחורות, אחת מהמחלות הקטלניות בהיסטוריה האנושית. שבטים שלמים באמריקה נמחו מעל פני האדמה לאחר פלישת הספרדים בגלל הוירוס הזה. באירופה שבה היו התפרצויות "סדירות" של המחלה התמותה היתה בסביבות 30%, כלומר אחד משלושה אנשים מת ממנה.

אבעבועות שחורות מדבקת באוויר. כלומר, על ידי שיעול. הוירוס דוגר במשך שבוע עד שבועיים, במהלכם האדם איננו מדבק. לאחר מכן החום עולה והאדם מרגיש רע (עד כדי כך שהוא לא יכול לעבוד, מציין האתר האמריקאי הקפיטליסטי). השלב הזה נמשך כיומיים עד ארבעה ימים, במהלכם האדם מדבק באופן חלקי.

ואז מופיעה הפריחה. היא מתחילה לרוב בפה ומתפשטת מהר בכל הגוף. אחד המאפיינים של הפריחה הוא שהיא מתחילה בקצוות (כלומר בכפות הידיים והרגליים) ומתפשטת למרכז הגוף, בניגוד לאבעבועות רוח שמתחילות במרכז הגוף ומתפשטות החוצה. הפריחה הופכת לאבעבועות תוך מספר ימים, ואיתן החום עולה שוב (כמה כיף). בשלב הזה האדם הוא מדבק במיוחד. הפריחה יכולה להמשך כשבועיים עד שלושה עד שהפצעים מגלידים ונושרים. לרוב נשארות צלקות שלא מחלימות ומהוות שלט "שרדתי את האבעבועות השחורות".

אבל זה במקרה הטוב.

במקרה הרע הוירוס פוגע באיברים פנימיים, מתרבה ללא שליטה בדם עד ליצירת תגובה בלתי פרופורציונלית של מערכת החיסון, פוגע במפרקים, בעיניים, ואף לדימומים עוריים קשים.

באנשים מחוסנים שנדבקים במחלה שיעור התמותה מהמחלה עומד על 1%, בערך. זה לא מבריק, אבל זה מה יש.

באנשים לא מחוסנים סיבת המוות העיקרית היא אלח דם, שנגרם ב-30% מהאנשים. אנשים בהם אין בכלל נגעים עוריים נמצאים בסיכון גבוה יותר לתמותה, בערך 45% מהם מתים. שיעור התמותה הגבוה ביותר הוא בקרב אנשים בהם מתפתחים דימומים תת עוריים – 95% מהם מתים, בלי קשר לחיסון או לא.

מאז שאדוארד ג'נר פיתח את החיסון נגד אבעבועות שחורות הצלחנו לחסן את כל העולם והוירוס נכחד רשמית בתחילת שנות השמונים. מאז לא היו מקרים של אבעבועות שחורות בעולם, וכל הוירוסים נמצאים בתוך מבחנות שמורות היטב בשתי מעבדות – המעבדה של ה-CDC בארה"ב ומעבדת vector ברוסיה.

אז המבחנות ההן, שנשכחו מאחור, מכילות את הוירוס המקורי, האמיתי, הקטלני שאמור היה לשמש למחקר.

מה שקרה הוא שה-NIH, מכון הבריאות הלאומי של ארה"ב, עבר דירה ב-1972 והעביר את המעבדות שלו לרשות ה-FDA, הרשות שמפקחת על בטיחות המזון והתרופות. חלק ממעבר הדירה כלל העברת הפיקוח על חומרים ביולוגים מסוכנים (כמו, למשל, וירוס קטלני שמחה חלק נכבד מהאנושות במהלך ההיסטוריה).

המבחנות שנמצאו מתוארכות לשנת 1950, התקופה בה עדיין נלחמו במגיפות אבעבועות שחורות ברחבי העולם, שלושים שנה לפני שהצליחו להכחיד את הוירוס.

המבחנות הועברו למתקני ה-CDC באטלנטה. אחרי ביצוע בדיקת PCR (בדיקה שמאפשרת לגלות שאריות חומר גנטי) התברר שהמבחנות אכן מכילות חומר גנטי של הוירוס. כעת בודקים האם הוירוסים שבפנים עדיין חיים ועדיין יכולים להדביק אחרים. הבדיקה הזו תיקח לפחות שבועיים, ולאחריה ישמידו את המבחנות. חייבים לבצע את הבדיקה על מנת ללמוד יותר על יכולת ההשרדות של הוירוס הזה.

החדשות הטובות: המבחנות לא נפתחו, כולם בריאים, אין שום עדות לכך שמשהו יצא מהן והתפזר בעולם, וכנראה שהסיפור הזה ייגמר טוב.

החדשות הרעות: אפשר היום להוריד את הרצף הגנטי של אבעבועות שחורות מהאינטרנט, וכל טרוריסט מחמד יכול לייצר וירוסים חדשים בזמנו הפנוי בעזרת חומרים נפוצים (יחסית).

I once wondered, as I sat in front of my computer, listening to UK garage, what percent of all XKCDs would have been able to fit on Twitter. While I doubt I'll ever be bored enough to check, anyone counting can add this to their list. I checked, and the text in this comic is exactly 140 characters as written. That alone takes a lot of points off, considering there's not even a doodle to add to it.

A problem with text-based communications is that it's really hard to realize when someone's being sarcastic or lying unless they play it up, and even then it doesn't always work*. When reading this, my interpretation went something like this:

Person: "Holy crap, a proof that information is infinitely compressible! I shalt write it in my biology textbook. Damn, there's only one margin I can put it in, and it's too small. Oh, wait. I could just compress the proof!"

I checked explainxkcd since obviously ":(" wouldn't make sense at the end of that chain of events. This comic is apparently actually a parody of Fermat's Last Theorem. The problem is, there's nothing in the comic that points this out. Someone who had just learned about FLT might get it, but as someone who hadn't heard about FLT until I had to write this post, this comic just didn't make sense to me.

As with many XKCDs, the idea isn't terrible, but the execution is. If we'd been shown a stick figure dude reading out FLT to a friend and saying that he'll pull a joke on everyone just like Fermat, that would have been a decent setup. If we'd been shown the stick figure slowly realizing his idea wouldn't work, with his friend calling him an idiot, that would have been a decent punchline. As it is, we get neither.

I seem to be ending a lot of my reviews by complaining about the small thing that bugged me more than it should have, and I see no reason to stop yet: Only pricks write out emoticons on paper (proof: I do it.).



*I was once E-friends with someone that used "Mhm" to mean "Yes", and up to that point I'd only ever seen it used to mean "Yeah, sure, whatever buddy." so there was a hi-LAR-ious miscommunication between the two of us.**

**She ended up being a really terrible conversationalist anyway. Whenever I told her something she was doing annoyed me, she'd do it again and think she was being funny. She was a bitch about everything too. Just a really awful person to talk to in general.

New Cyanide and Happiness Comic.

An anonymous Op-Ed in The Guardian asserts that English has no word for politeness ("What's the worst thing about cycling? Other cyclists", 7/5/2014):

Interestingly, while we're on the subject of Japan, it has a large cycling population and many cycling laws – all of which are completely ignored. Cyclists regularly ride on paths and, indeed, police will even direct them on to walkways if they see them on roads. And yet cyclists, drivers and pedestrians get along fine. How does it work? In a word, politeness – one of those Japanese concepts with no direct translation into English.

There's a true statement somewhere behind this unusually absurd version of the "no word for X" trope. In 25 years of walking several miles a day in Philadelphia, I don't think I've ever seen a cyclist stop for a red light unless they were in imminent danger of being flattened by crossing automobiles, as opposed to flattening crossing pedestrians.

Of course, what counts as politeness is culturally dependent. The other day, as 30 or so pedestrians in a tour group were using a zebra crossing, I observed a cyclist approaching the red light at high speed shouting "Watch out! Watch out! Watch out!" as he wove through the group without slowing down. No doubt he thought of the shouted warning as good manners.

 

רצח שלושת הצעירים מגוש עציון הביא אנשים רבים לפרסם בפייסבוק קריאות לנקמה במחבלים ו/או בערבים. בעקבות זאת הכריז משרד המשפטים על “פתיחת ‘קו חם’ לתלונות מן הציבור על הסתה“:

​בעקבות גילויי ההסתה האחרונים באינטרנט וברשתות החברתיות הורתה שרת המשפטים להקים “קו חם” לתלונות מן הציבור על הסתות אלה במשרד המשפטים. ה”קו החם” יפעל במסגרת מרכז השירות והמידע של משרד המשפטים במספר 1-700-70-60-44. ​המוקד הונחה להעביר את התלונות מיידית לטיפול הגורמים הרלבנטים במשרד המשפטים ובמערכת אכיפת החוק. ה”קו החם” נועד לייצר ערוץ נוסף להצפת אירועי הסתה חמורים לידיעת גורמי אכיפת החוק.

מעולה. עכשיו כל מה שצריך לעשות זה להתקשר לקו החם ולהגיד “יוסי כתב בפייסבוק ‘ישראל רוצה נקמה’ ושם תמונה שלו עם סכין בין השיניים. תחפשו יוסי כהן בעברית בפייסבוק או תגובה שלו בסטטוסים מצייציים”. ואז משרד המשפטים ישלח לוחמי סייבר לאתר את המסית ו…מה בדיוק? לעצור אותו? לדווח עליו לפייסבוק כדי שיסגרו לו את הפרופיל? לכתוב לו טוקבק נוזף? שלא לדבר על הבחירה התמוהה במוקד טלפוני: “קו חם” בפייסבוק, באימייל ואפילו בפקס היה מועיל יותר מזה.

אבל רגע, רק לפני שנה פתח משרד המשפטים “קו חם למאבק בגזענות“:

בעקבות המקרה המטריד ב”סופרלנד” שיצר ההפרדה שלא כדין בין קבוצות מבתי ספר יהודים וערבים, החליטה שרת המשפטים, גב’ ציפי לבני יחד עם מנכ״ל משרד המשפטים גיא רוטקופף, לפתוח לאלתר “קו חם” שייתן מענה לציבור הרחב ויגיב לפניות בנושא אפליה או גזענות. [...] המענה יינתן בטל: 02-6209558 בימים א’-ה’ בין השעות 8.30 עד 16.00, והן באמצעות דוא”ל בכתובת Shivion@justice.gov.il

אפילו ההצהרות שצורפו להודעות לעיתונות דומות. בהודעת הקו החם לגזענות מצוטט מנכ”ל משרד המשפטים, ד”ר גיא רוטקופף: “משרד המשפטים על יחידותיו השונות, ימשיך במאמצים בלתי מתפשרים למגר תופעות גזעניות ואפליה אשר פוגעות בחברה הישראלית כולה”. בהודעת הקו החם להסתה מצוטטת שרת המשפטים ציפי לבני: “דברי ההסתה והקריאות לנקמה הם לא דרכה של הציונות ולא זו דרכה של מדינת ישראל, שהיא מדינת חוק. משרד המשפטים על כל שלוחותיו פועל כדי לעצור את גל ההסתה המסוכן״. שלוחותיו, יחידותיו, יעצור, ימגר.

“קו חם” של משרד המשפטים מסתמן, אם כן, כעדכון של השיטה הישראלית הוותיקה להתחמקות מפתרון בעיות באמצעות הקמת ועדה. אם במשרד מתכוונים לשמש כמוקד תלונות על פשעים ועבירות, שיסגרו את מוקד 100 של המשטרה, חבל על ההוצאות הכפולות. אחרת, שיפסיקו לבלבל במוח עם קווים חמים, שמשמשים בעיקר ליחצנות עצמית של המשרד ושל השרה שבראשו, דרך לדמות פעילות נגד הסתה במקום לפעול. כי לפעול זה לעשות משהו נגד מקרים יותר מובהקים ממישהו שמצטלם עם דף A4 – למשל, כנופיות כהניסטים שמסתובבות בירושלים ומחפשות לחלע ערבים, אשר מונהגות על ידי אנשים שזהותם גלויה וידועה.

“התנתקתי מהוט בחודש ינואר השנה”, מספר אלירן בן חיים. “מיד לאחר הניתוק התחלתי לקבל כמה שיחות בכל יום, לרוב ממספר חסום, של נציגים שביקשו להחזיר אותי. אחרי שהציעו לי לחזור כמעט בחינם וסירבתי, ואחרי שאיימתי בלי סוף בתביעות, זה פחת לפעמיים בשבוע בערך. בשבועיים האחרונים, משום מה החל גל חדש של 3-4 שיחות ביום, בכל פעם ממוקד אחר או ממספר חסום שמתקשרים אלי”.

בן חיים הוא אחד משורה ארוכה של קורבנות של הטרדה מצד חברת התקשורת. בתחילת החודש קיימה ח”כ עדי קול דיון בנושא בוועדה המיוחד לפניות הציבור של הכנסת שבראשותה, לאחר שלדבריה קיבלה 15 פניות מהוט אחרי שהתנתקה ממנה. היא הבטיחה-איימה ליזום חוק לקניסת חברות שמטרידות אנשים שביקשו לא להתקשר אליהם בעשרת אלפים שקלים.

מנהל אגף פניות הציבור בהוט, שימי עזר, מצוטט בכלכליסט: “הנהלים בהוט אוסרים על פניות מופרזות ללקוח ונציגים שפועלים בניגוד לנוהל נענשים. בכל זאת כשיש לחברה כמו הוט שני מיליון מפגשים עם לקוחות [מספר קסם שהחברה אוהבת לנופף בו בתגובה לתלונות, למרות שדי ברור שהחברה לא מסוגלת להתמודד עם כמות כזאת; ע"ק], 15-10 תלונות זה לא הרבה”.

“לא משנה כמה אני אבקש שיפסיקו, אספר ששרפתי את הטלוויזיה או שאלירן נפטר, זה האפוטרופוס, הם לא מפסיקים”, הסביר בן חיים בפייסבוק. הוא לא רוצה לחכות לחקיקה – הוא רוצה שהוט יפסיקו להטריד אותו. כפי שאמר לי: “בגלל שהבקשה שלי להפסיק להתקשר לא נענית, החלטתי לפנות לבוס שיבקש מהעובדים שלו להפסיק להתקשר”.

בן חיים פרסם בפייסבוק את מספר הטלפון של מנכ”ל הוט, אילן צחי יו”ר הוט, הרצל עוזר, וביקש מחבריו להציף אותו בבקשות להפסיק את ההטרדות הטלפוניות.

החברים התגייסו לסייע:

האם זה עזר? היו”ר סבור שלא, בן חיים חושב שדווקא כן. “זה באמת לא נעים לקבל המון פניות מאנשים שאומרים לך את אותו הדבר, אולי בנוסח קצת שונה, למרות שאתה ממש לא רוצה שהם יפנו אליך”, כתב ליו”ר.

דוברת הוט, שירי קריספין, לא השיבה על שאלותיי מדוע הוט מטרידה לקוחות והאם הדרך היחידה לרדת מרשימת ההטרדות של החברה היא להציף את היו”ר בפניות. החברה מסרה בתגובה: “צר לנו על הטענות [על הטענות? לא על ההתנהלות שלכם? ע"ק], הדבר מנוגד להנחיות החברה [אני בספק, לאור כמות האנשים המוטרדים. כמה קשה להטמיע את הנחיות החברה? כמה נציגי מכירות ומנהלי מכירות ננזפו/הושעו/פוטרו בגלל שפעלו כך בניגוד להנחיות החברה? ע"ק] ואנו פועלים לטיפול בעניין. נפעל מידית להסרת המספר ממאגר הלקוחות [יכולתם לפעול מיידית בכל אחת ואחת מהשיחות שבהן בן חיים ביקש שתפסיקו להתקשר אליו. כנראה שהצפת המנכ"ל עזרה. אמליץ למוטרדים נוספים לעשות זאת. ע"ק]“.
