DrinkOne – A LUPEC + USBG Marathon Fundraiser
Announcing…
DrinkOne
A LUPEC + USBG Marathon Fundraiser
This May drinking establishments from Boston, Cambridge, and beyond will partner together for DrinkOne, a month-long, city-wide drink promotion. ALL profits of sales of DrinkOne drinks will be donated those affected by the tragic bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon April 15, 2013.
DrinkOne will allow Boston-area bartenders to show their support the best way they know how: by serving delicious drinks and donating all proceeds from their sales to victims of the Marathon bombings.
DrinkOne will be punctuated by a series of events to include a bar crawl, where guests will “race” from bar to bar to sample DrinkOne drinks while sporting specially made “running” shirts, arriving at a celebratory bash to mark the end of the promotion (venue TBD.)
The closing bash also a fundraiser, will feature a fabulous prize raffle, and silent auction. The total dollar amount raised during the course of the month at the closing party.
PARTICIPATING BARS
It’s easy to participate: simply designate a drink of your choosing, either newly added or an old faithful, as your DrinkOne cocktail. Proceeds from sales of that drink through May 31st will support those affected by the Marathon Bombings.
Stay tuned for a list of venues where you can drink for a cause this May!
Can’t make it to Boston to drink for a cause? Donate here!
BENEFICIARIES
DrinkOne will collect all donations through gofundme.com or via check written directly to the USBG Boston. Once the promotion is complete, DrinkOne will announce the dollar amount of funds raised, which will then be allocated as follows:
-
To support members of the service industry affected by the Marathon bombings
-
To support families affected by the Marathon bombings

NOTE: Tour dates updated below, May 13, 2013.
NOS4A2 is out, two weeks from today, and just caught a pair of great reviews, one from Pop Matters, the other from tor.com. Alex Brown at Tor says:
NOS4A2 is not only Hill’s best work thus far, but a serious contender for a slot in the top 5 books of the year.
While Popmatters thought it was a breakout like that big hit (I forget the title), by some other writer (I misremember who).
Over on Facehooked, we’re running a contest to give away a signed piece of art from the book; all you gotta do to enter is preorder the novel. Info here.

Molecular Mixology: DIY Alcoholic Dippin' Dots — Gizmodo
PaghababianWhaaaaa?

MoreGiveaway: New Heritage Collection Blue Jars from Ball
PaghababianIs it weird that I want these just to use with my Cuppow?
In the last few years, many of my favorite things that were once rare and only available in thrift stores and junk shops have been reissued. First there were the Pint & Half jars that came back last winter. Then Dansk from back their classic Kobenstyle cookware (according to The Kitchn, there’s more to come in that product line this season!). Now Ball has brought back blue glass canning jars. Be still my heart!
These Heritage Collection Pints are a limited edition jar, that has been issued to mark the 100th anniversary of the Perfect Mason, the original jar designed and produced by the Ball brothers. They’re not exact reproductions of those first jars, but do a lovely job at evoking an earlier age of home food preservation.
The shape of these new jars is identical to the regular mouth Ball pint jars currently on the market. They have measure marks along the sides in both cups and milliliters, come in sets of six, and are absolutely safe for home canning. As you can see from the photo above, the color is not an exact match to the jars of yesteryear, but it’s quite close. They also have a little commemorative note embossed on the back.
One thing to note about these jars is that they truly are limited. When they’re gone, they’re gone. If you want to add these to your pantry, make sure to pick some up sooner rather than later. You can currently order them from Fillmore Container. The Fresh Preserving Store and Amazon have them available for pre-order and should be fulfilling orders soon. I’ve not seen them in the wild yet, but I’ve heard that they will be stocked in brick and mortar stores.
Thanks to the nice folks at Ball, I have one box of these pretty jars to give away to a lucky Food in Jars reader (make sure to follow the Ball Facebook page and Pinterest account to be the first to know about future limited edition jars). If you want to enter, here’s what to do:
- Leave a comment on this post and share a blue glass jar memory or experience. If you don’t have any fond remembrances about blue glass jars, share how you’d use these new jars in your home.
- Comments will close at 11:59 pm on Friday, March 15, 2013. Winners will be chosen at random and will be posted to the blog over the weekend.
- Giveaway open to US residents only (so sorry, my further-flung readers).
- One comment per person, please. Entries must be left via the comment form on the blog at the bottom of this post.
Disclosure: The publicist for Jarden Home Brands gave me a box of these jars to review and is providing a second box for the giveaway. They did not pay for inclusion on the blog and my opinions remain entirely my own.

Barcade (Combination Beer Bar/Arcade) Is Eyeing the Boston Area
Boston Magazine is reporting that Paul Kermizian, who is the founder and co-operator of Barcade, is considering the possibility of opening a location somewhere in Boston or possibly Cambridge or Somerville. In the article, Kermizian states that "Boston is definitely a place that's on the top of our list—not the very top—but in the next few cities we [open bars in], we would like to think of moving there" and that "We have a couple of other places in mind first, but Boston would probably be one of the next two or three after [the opening of a new location in Manhattan]."
Barcade, which first started out in Brooklyn in about nine years ago, features craft beers as well as classic arcade games. In addition to its Brooklyn location, outlets of the place can also be found in Jersey City and Philadelphia. (The Manhattan location will be on the "West Side" of the borough and should be opening sometime this year.)
Thanks to the Boston Hospitality and Tourism Industry Blog for bringing this to our attention.
