Dark Horse to Collect Omnibus of Award Winning "Planetes" Sci-Fi Manga

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Makoto Yukimura's (Vinland Saga) hard sci-fi manga Planetes will be returning to North America in a new omnibus edition from Dark Horse, manga hitting specialty comic shops December 23nd, 2015, and bookstores on the 22nd. This series about orbital debris collectors (think the stuff that caused all the havoc in Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity) won Japan's prestigious Seiun speculative fiction award in 2002 for Best Manga, then its anime adaptation won in 2005 for Best Dramatic Presentation.

Tokyopop previously released the series between 2003 and 2005, with the final Japanese collection split for a total of five volumes.

Speaking about the release, editor Brendan Wright says

"Planetes is one of the series that made me a manga fan, at once startlingly realistic in its scientific detail, moving in its relateable human drama, and hilarious in the personailities of its diverse cast of astronauts. I was saddened to think it might fade from American comics shops after TokyoPop’s demise, so it’s a joy and an honor to reintroduce it at Dark Horse in the edition I’d want as a fan, with superior source materials and all the color pages included.”

Watch A Fox News Anchor Debunk His Network's Defense Of Indiana's "Religious Freedom" Law

Fox News anchor Bret Baier debunked the network's defense of Indiana's discriminatory "religious freedom" law, explaining that the law is broader than both federal law and similar measures in other states.

Last week, Indiana became the center of a political firestorm after the state legislature passed its version of the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" (RFRA), a law that  allows private individuals and for-profit business owners to cite their religious beliefs as a legal defense against claims of discrimination from consumers who have been wrongfully denied services based solely on their sexual orientation or gender identity. As the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana explained, Indiana's RFRA "may embolden individuals and businesses who now feel that their religious liberty is 'burdened' by treating a member of the LGBT community equally and that their 'burden' trumps others' rights to be free from discrimination."

Proponents of the law, including Indiana Republican Gov. Mike Pence, have downplayed these potential consequences by incorrectly claiming that the law is noncontroversial because it merely mirrors the federal RFRA and RFRAs in other states. It's a talking point that has been repeated on Fox News, which has so far depicted Indiana's law as a benign attempt to protect the devout from government encroachment on religious freedom.

But during the March 30 edition of Happening Now, Baier deflated his network's defense of the law, explaining to host Eric Shawn that Indiana's RFRA is "broader" than both federal law and other state RFRAs:

ERIC SHAWN: You know, the law was intended to protect personal religious liberties against government overreach and intrusion. So what happened?

BAIER: Well, Indiana's law is written a little differently. It is more broad. It is different than the federal law that it's close to, but different than, and also different than 19 other states and how the law is written. In specific terms, Indiana's law deals with a person who can claim religious persecution but that includes corporations, for profit entities and it could also be used as a defense in a civil suit that does not involve the government. That is broader than the other laws. This is where it's a little different in Indiana's case. You saw governor Mike Pence try to defend the law and say it's just like the 1993 federal law where it's just like 19 other states, but as you look in the fine print, it's not really, and it may be something that Indiana deals with in specifics to line up with the others.

[...]

SHAWN: Obviously, it had good intentions. What do you think happened to make it kind of go off the rails this way?

BAIER: Well, how it was structured, Eric. And I think that, you know, there may be good intentions behind it but how it's being interpreted is being a little bit more forward leaning than any other Religious Freedom Restoration Act on the books. What this does politically, obviously Mike Pence has been talked about as a governor thinking about a 2016 run. We don't know if he's going to do it or not. But that interview with Stephanopoulos over the weekend was obviously not a great back and forth in defense of this law that likely is going to have to be at least tweaked, if not changed. [emphasis added]

On WWE: It Takes A Nation Of WWE To Hold Uhaa Back

by hsmeltzer@juno.com (Dave Meltzer)

Submitted by Zach Dominello

Uhaa Nation is WWE bound, at least he was the last I heard. Once he's finished up his scheduled indie dates, he'll be on his way to the wonderful(?) world of WWE. That prospect has me equal parts super happy and excited, and terribly worried for the twenty-seven year old Uhaa Nation.

You’ve probably noticed this by now if you’ve seen Uhaa wrestle over the last five years or so in places like Dragon Gate in Japan and Evolve, Uhaa is a big guy. Like Bobby Lashley/Brock Lesnar/Brian Cage big. Yet, he somehow moves around like a jr. heavyweight the likes of Flamita or Kota Ibushi. Well, maybe he doesn’t move THAT well, but very close. You may also have noticed that he’s very charismatic and comes across as an extremely likeable person. He recently competed in his final Dragon Gate match before heading to the Fed against DG champion BxB Hulk. After the match, Dragon Gate held a Graduation Ceremony for Uhaa with pretty much every single member of the DG roster coming out to the ring to say their farewells.

It was one of the most emotional, heartwarming moments in wrestling I’ve ever witnessed. It also speaks volumes of Uhaa that so many of his peers were so happy for him as he moves on to bigger and hopefully better things, but also deeply saddened to see him go. To summate, he’s got the perfect WWE look, in that he’s tall and has all the big muscles. He’s young and charismatic. And as a bonus, he can actually wrestle, whether he’s bringing the power game or the high-flying. There are never any guarantees, but Uhaa Nation’s chances of success in the WWE look very good, and that is why I’m very happy for him and his move to the “Big Leagues”.

Oh, wait. There’s just one thing. It a very subtle point and I don’t blame you if you’ve never even noticed it before. It’s very easy to miss. The thing about Uhaa Nation is…he’s black! Shocking, right? I know. You see, the world of wrestling outside of the WWE is actually filled with people of varying backgrounds and ethnicities. What’s more, those backgrounds and ethnicities have almost no bearing on the person’s success in wrestling. You can be white, black, Japanese, North American, South American, you name it, and you can still have success in pro wrestling.

Outside of the WWE, particularly on the indies, skin colour and ethnicity is a non-issue. What’s important is being good at pro wrestling and having the ability to entertain and connect with the audience. Shinsuke Nakamura can do that, and he’s Japanese. So can Flamita, and he’s Mexican. You know who else is a great wrestler, knows how to be entertaining, and can connect with fans? Uhaa Nation, and he’s black!

I’m not saying everyone in the WWE is white. I’m not blind. They’ve got their Japanese quota filled with Hideo Itami, and their non-white quota with R-Truth and the New Day Gang. They’ve also got their Mexican quota filled with Kalisto and Sin Cara El Segundo. Clearly WWE really is a worldwide company. I mean, look at how diverse their roster is. The problem is that while they do have these great talents, for the most part (Titus O'Neil?), from various backgrounds and ethnicities, the way they are used ranges from terribly to not at all. Case in point, let’s take a look at some black WWE Superstars past and present and how they were/are represented:

  • The Junkyard Dog - A “dog” who lived in a junkyard, and danced. Also a favourite of mine as a kid.
  • Virgil - Slave
  • The Boogeyman - Worm Assassin
  • Bobby Lashley - I guess he did alright for a while. He got to hang out with Donald Trump's hair. But wasn’t he released for being injured?
  • Cryme Tyme - Two thieves who can’t spell crime or time correctly.
  • R-Truth - Has performed the same rap song for over eighty years. And dances.
  • The Prime Time Players - Actually, I don’t think they’ve done anything overly offensive. Unless, you class Titus O'Neil's wrestling s offensive. I guess WWE did silence Darren Young when he spoke out about WWE touring in the Middle East. And they do have a dance, of course.
  • The New Day - I don’t even know. They clap and smile.

And to hammer the point home, let's take a quick look at the black Superstars being featured in WrestleMania Play Button this year:

  • The New Day: Pre-show.
  • Prime Time Players: Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal number fillers.
  • R-Truth: Despite having done absolutely nothing for quite some time, he's resurfaced as the guy who constantly steals the IC title (I actually don't mind it when guys steal titles. It's fun! But not when "steals title" is their only defining trait). As a result he's been inserted into the multi-man IC Title Ladder Match.

Wow! With so many well-defined black Superstars on the Mania card, just who am I going to cheer for?

Do you notice a pattern? This is the part that has me terribly worried for Uhaa Nation. WWE's track record when it comes to representing black professional wrestlers is fairly atrocious to say the least. I sure hope he’s a good dancer

WWE’s big thing is that they’re not just about wrestling matches. They’re about characters and stories. They’re a weekly episodic TV program that is supposed to keep you coming back each week because you want to know what’s going to happen with your favourite character(s). And that’s great, in theory. Wrestling shouldn’t just be about the matches. Intriguing, entertaining characters and intelligent, engaging stories are what I love about pro wrestling. Of course I love the athleticism and the “sport” side of it too, but without good storytelling and build, the matches are nothing. Why is WWE so bad at telling stories and creating interesting characters with their two-hundred or so creative writers is beyond me. Maybe they need more writers? And more to the point, why are they especially bad at writing for black professional wrestlers?

Despite all of this, I still have hope for Uhaa Nation. Sometimes, even in the WWE, the cream rises to the top. Daniel Bryan defied the odds and made it to the top, albeit ever so briefly. He did so almost solely on his tremendous talent and his ability to connect with the fans. If Uhaa Nation is going to reach any kind of level of success in the WWE, he will probably have to be prepared to do the same thing because I frankly doubt he’s going to get any help from the WWE Machine. And if anyone can make it in the WWE on talent and charisma alone, it’s Uhaa Nation. In fact, it may just be “Too Easy!"

Shock! Author Doesn’t Punch Vlogger!

by Admin1

So there we were at the end of the ICA screening of anime anthology Short Peace, part of the Japan Foundation’s annual touring programme of Japanese film. It was a great screening with a packed house that loved the movie and loved my intro to it.

At the end of the show, when we were all getting our coats and ready to go home, the amazing Aisha Ahmed asked me for a video interview.

Did I complain? Did I say I couldn’t go ahead without an hour in make-up? Did I deck her for even suggesting that a star of the magnitude of moi should stand in a corridor and do an interview without so much as a nibble of sizzling fillet steak?

Of course not. For one thing she’s a lot tougher than me, for another I haven’t done kindergarten tantrums since kindergarten, and for a third I don’t have the Daily Mail et al boosting my paycheque with huge column inches every time I zip up my geriatric jeans.

So I just did the interview. Here it is.

Fox News Attacks Planet Fitness' Trans-Inclusive Locker Room Policy

Fox News criticized Planet Fitness for its policy allowing transgender members to use the restrooms and locker rooms they feel comfortable with, inviting discredited psychiatrist and Fox News contributor Dr. Keith Ablow to peddle bogus stereotypes about transgender people

Last month, a Michigan woman named Yvette Cormier complained to the management of the Midland Planet Fitness gym after she saw a transgender woman named Carlotta Sklodowska using the women's locker room. When management informed Cormier that transgender members were allowed to use the locker room of their choice, Cormier spent four days approaching other women at the gym and informing them that a "man" was using the women's locker room. Planet Fitness asked her to stop. When she refused, the gym cancelled her membership, stating the she had violated the company's trademark "no judgment" policy.

During the March 10 edition of Fox & Friends, co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck invited Ablow, the Fox News contributor notorious for making grossly inaccuratemisleading, and offensive claims about the transgender community, to criticize Planet Fitness's policy. The segment, which labeled the situation "Legal INSANITY," began with Hasselbeck referring to Sklodowska as a "man" and quickly devolved into transphobic stereotypes:

ABLOW: It's tough to speak about because we're so politically correct now that we get tongue tied. We can't say the obvious, which is this is craziness. You're kicking out members because they feel uncomfortable that someone who seems to be a man to them and is genetically is looking at them naked when they're unclothed as women? That's craziness.

[...]

ABLOW: We are being bullied into accepting things that are untrue to our core feelings.

Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls Ending Theme Translation

by sdshamshel

sehagirls-radionights-small

A couple of cool podcasts, Anime World Order and GME Anime Fun Time, recently released their reviews of Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls, a bizarre, low-budget 3DCG anime about personified Sega game consoles from the creators of the incredible gdgd Fairies and Straight Title Robot Anime. As a huge fan of Sega growing up, the show hit all the right spots.

At one point, the AWO crew and guest Heidi Kemps talk about the SeHa Girls ending theme, which they explain is actually the company song for Sega in the 90s, but is sadly left untranslated in the official Crunchyroll release. I decided to take it upon myself to translate the song, only to realize that there is not only a full version of the original song, but that there’s also a full version of the variation used in SeHa Girls as well.

Thus, I present to you a translation of “Wakai Chikara -SEGA HARD GIRLS MIX-.”

A couple of notes: Wakai Chikara, or “Youthful Power,” was the Japanese Sega slogan in the 90s. Similarly, a lot of the quotes spoken in reference to Sega hardware are also advertising slogans.

Luffy, the protagonist of the One Piece series, co-stars with 50-year-old actor Abe Hiroshi (Thermae Romae) in an episode "Gomu Gomu no Otoko" (A Rubberman) of the upcoming live-action TV drama special "Yonimo Kimyou Na Monogatari” (Tales Of The Extremely Bizarre).

The manga artist-themed TV special is produced in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Fuji TV's drama series started in April 1990, and is scheduled to be aired at 9:00 pm on April 11 (JST). The story itself isn't written by the original manga author Eiichiro Oda. Florida DEP Banned From Using The Words 'Climate Change,' 'Global Warming'

by John Amato
Florida DEP Banned From Using The Words 'Climate Change,' 'Global Warming'

Florida is many things, and one is that they are the American state most susceptible to climate change. That's what the experts say, anyway, but in a bizarre move, the state has banned all Department of Environmental Protection officials from using words like global warming and climate change because apparently they believe it's a myth.

The state of Florida is the region most susceptible to the effects of global warming in this country, according to scientists. Sea-level rise alone threatens 30 percent of the state’s beaches over the next 85 years.

But you would not know that by talking to officials at the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the state agency on the front lines of studying and planning for these changes.

DEP officials have been ordered not to use the term “climate change” or “global warming” in any official communications, emails, or reports, according to former DEP employees, consultants, volunteers and records obtained by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting.

The policy goes beyond semantics and has affected reports, educational efforts and public policy in a department that has about 3,200 employees and $1.4 billion budget.

She's Just A Humble Southern History Buff Who Doesn't Like 'Lincoln Bin Laden'

She's Just A Humble Southern History Buff Who Doesn't Like 'Lincoln Bin Laden'

Yesterday was the fiftieth anniversary of the Bloody Sunday in Selma, Alabama, and I suppose it was inevitable that the resentnik crowd would make their presence felt:

Within sight of the bridge where President Obama will commemorate the 1965 Bloody Sunday march is a billboard set up by a group dedicated to honoring Ku Klux Klan founder Nathan Bedford Forrest.

The sign, set up in recent days, invites visitors to see "Selma's War Between The States Historic Sites." But it also features a picture of the Confederate flag and an image of Forrest, who was also a Confederate general....

The head of the group behind the controversial billboard scoffed at the suggestion that some might find it offensive.

"That billboard was put there with positive intent to ask people who come to Selma to explore and enjoy our 19th century history," said Patricia Goodwin, head of the group Friends of Forrest Inc.

"Does it say anything in the Constitution where a certain faction of people cannot be offended?" she added. "I'm offended by all these people walking around with their pants hanging around their knees."

VIDEO: "TO-Y" Manga Artist Draws Visual-kei Band PENICILLIN's Latest Album Jacket

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

51-year-old manga artist Atsushi Kamijo, who is best known for his rock band-themed manga in the mid-1980s, TO-Y, draws a CD jacket illustration for the limited edition of three-member visual-kei band PENICILLIN's upcoming cover album "Memories ~Japanese Masterpieces~." The band name was taken from a fictional punk rock band in the manga, Penicillin Shock.

It is their first cover album and contains 10 non-rock songs, such as Sayuri Ishikawa's popular enka song "Amagi Goe" and idol singer Akina Nakamori's two hit songs in 1984, "Kazari Ja Nai no yo Namida wa" and "Kita Wing." It is scheduled to be released in Japan on March 18. Check the jacket artworks and a preview video for the album below.

Tucker Carlson: SNL Should Be 'Making Fun Of' Transgender People Instead Of ISIS

Fox News host Tucker Carlson said on Sunday that he would like to see comedians mocking transgender people instead of the terrorist group ISS.

Over the weekend, social media reportedly erupted over a Saturday Night Live segment spoofing feel-good Toyota commercials. In the SNL version, actress Dakota Johnson plays a young lady saying goodbye to her father as she appears to be joining the U.S. Army. As the segment ends, it turns out that she is actually being picked up by ISIS terrorists in a Toyota truck.

On Sunday, Carlson described the sketch as "appalling" and "kind of funny."

"The question is, should we be mocking ISIS?" he asserted.

"Comics push the envelope and every once in a while they are going to push it too far, and it's going to bust wide open," co-host Anna Kooiman opined. "And sometimes when you want to cry, you need to laugh instead. And you tell a joke about it."

"I'm kind of for comedy that goes as far as it can," Carlson said. "But I always feel like with shows like SNL and comedy in general, it does stop short of the sacred cows on the left."

"I would love to see an SNL sketch like making fun of transgender bathrooms, for example," he added. "You will never, ever see that. Why? Because it's just too far. There actually is a line, it's just a different line than most of us perceive."
