Colorado Restaurant To Hold White Appreciation Day

by LeftOfCenter
Colorado Restaurant To Hold White Appreciation Day

It's just what all those poor white people need. A day they can be appreciated. In a Milliken, Colorado restaurant, two owners jokingly suggested a day white people can get preferential treatment too.

What started as a joke is now on the calendar. Edgar Antillon and Miguel Jimenez recently purchased Rubbin Buttz BBQ on Broad Street. On June 11, they plan to offer a 10 percent discount to all white customers and no one else.

He hopes it will "bring people together."

Antillon argues: "We have a whole month for Black History Month... We have a whole month for Hispanic Heritage Month, so we thought the least we could do was offer one day to appreciate white Americans." However, those months were created to raise awareness for under-represented subsets of the population. During those months, no one receives discounts or special treatment due to the color of their skin or their heritage. If anything, restaurants have come under fire for offering controversial Black History Month menus

.
The owner hopes that opening up the discussion will prompt others to think differently about race. How'd that let's start a conversation about race at Starbucks work out for them?

Returned FROM THE DEAD for revenge

FUNimation introduces Peco, a table tennis natural, with a mouth and ego to match in their new English dub preview for Ping Pong the Animation. The DVD and Blu-ray release of Tokyo Anime Awards Festival-winning adaptation of Taiyo Matsumoto's manga is scheduled for June 23rd.

We meet Peco, a table tennis natural, with a mouth and ego to match. Even after dominating his poor opponent, Peco insists on rubbing his nose in it - along with Smile, his teacher, and everyone else within ear shot.

Smile and Peco. Peco and Smile. Besties from the beginning, both with a badass backhand. Peco is known for his arrogance on the table tennis court, and Smile for his silence. But with a new school year and a new high school table tennis team, both boys are in for a challenge, on--and off--the court. Peco’s slacker ways are hurting his game, and after getting crushed in a tournament, he decides to quit. Smile is finally learning to harness his natural talents, but can he squash his sympathy for his opponents enough to beat them. A "Robot Wedding" in Aoyama? What's Going On Here?

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Darylsurat

The Dread Specter's power is mighty, too powerful in fact

In a bizarre piece of performance art, Froisurobo and Roborin, a robot with a bath stool for a head and a gynoid designed to resemble AKB48's Yuki Kashiwagi, will be tying the knot in June at a venue in Aoyama. The wedding will be hosted by the social companionship robot, Pepper.

The “Robo Kon” event takes place at the Aoyama CAY restaurant bar in Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan on June 27, 2015. Admission to the event costs 10,000 yen ($83.15 US) and comes with access to a wedding reception style buffet. Of course, since weddings are a solemn occasion, formal dress is required.

The Cold Equations: Japan’s animation Blu-Ray rankings April 2015

by Admin1
The most successful anime in Japan right now

The most successful anime in Japan right now

In the week of 20-26 April 2015, Japan’s animation Blu-Ray sales rankings as recording by Oricon and reported on Anime News Network, looked like this:20-26 April 2015 BRsalesThe scorecard for the week: Disney 171,548 sales vs the hottest eight local releases 119,178 sales. With one title Disney has made around a third more sales than a local slate including not one but two major fannish-heritage titles in Jojo and Gundam. To match the sales for Big Hero 6 you’d need to add the sales for the next 10 top sellers (all Japanese-owned) to the local tally.

You can argue about quality, diversity and originality but you can’t argue with the numbers. Japanese Blu-ray buyers chose Disney’s take on anime over the local version last month – and do the same every month there’s a new Disney release. The big-numbers family market is where the money is – for theatre sales and merchandise as well as home entertainment – and Disney has positioned itself brilliantly in that market, making it the most successful anime studio in Japan.

This is what alpha predation looks like.

"Shonen Jump" Reportedly Ending "Takujo no Agehaa," "Cyborg Roggy" and "Gakkyuu Houtei"

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

After the current 22/23 double issue of Shonen Jump, the manga magazine will debut new series in issues 24, 25 and 26, respectively dance themed Sesuji wo Pin! to〜Kyougi Dance-bu e Youkoso〜 by Takuma Yokota aka Yoko, author of Onani Master Kurosawa and Sentou Hakai Gakuen DangerousLady Justice by Ken Ogino (Hayate hime); and 9th Golden Future Cup winner Devily-man by Kentaro Fukuda. And, it looks like the expected series are being cleared away to make room.

Itsuki Furuya's Takujo no Ageha: The Table Tennis of Ageha already ended in this week's double issue. An early listing has both Yuu Miki's Cyborg Roggy and Nobuaki Enoki and Death Note artist Takeshi Obata artist's Gakkyu Houtei ending their runs in issue 24. Gakkyu Houtei will finish off the material for its third volume in the digital Jump+.

All these series were sampled in the English Shonen Jump through its "Jump Start" initiative. Gakkyu Houtei continued with a simul-publication run.

Sion Sono Returns to His Surreal, Violent Roots with "Tag"

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com
Darylsurat

I wasn't aware he ever left them...?

Prolific director Sion Sono is returning to his surreal, violent roots with his upcoming film, Real Onigokko, known internationally as Tag.

Tag is the 7th film to adapt Yusuke Yamada's 2001 Real Onigokko novel, which features ordinary people inexplicably beset from all sides by murderous forces. In the novel, people with the family name of Sato were targeted, but since this is Sion Sono directing there's a twist: instead of people named Sato, the targets are exclusively high school girls.

Check out the trailer if you dare:

Tag hits Japanese cinemas on July 11, 2015.

Baltimore Councilman Blasts CNN's Erin Burnett: 'Just Call Them Ni**ers'

by Heather
Baltimore Councilman Blasts CNN's Erin Burnett: 'Just Call Them Ni**ers'

Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stokes was none too happy with CNN host Erin Burnett for calling the protesters and rioters in Baltimore "thugs."

Black Baltimore Councilman Blasts White CNN Host: 'Just Call Them Ni**ers':

Burnett, who is white, began by noting that both Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlins-Blake and President Obama had referred to the "bad actors" as "thugs."

Stokes, who is black, rejected the word and told Burnett she was referring to teenagers and young people — "our children" — who clashed with police on Monday night.

"But how does that justify what they did?" Burnett said. "I mean, that’s a sense of right and wrong. They know it’s wrong to steal and burn down a CVS and an old person’s home. I mean, come on."

"Come on?" Stokes said. "So calling them thugs — just call them niggers. Just call them niggers."

"When you say 'come on,' come on what?" he added. "You wouldn't call your a child a thug if they did something which was not what you'd expect them to do."

"I would hope I would call my son a thug if he ever did such a thing," Burnett shot back.

"Zawa...Zawa..." - Nobuyuki Fukumoto Art Exhibit at GoFaLabo in Tokyo

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

To celebrate the 35th anniversary since the debut of manga artist Nobuyuki Fukumoto, the Gallery of Fantastic Art in Tokyo is producing an art exhibition and collaboration cafe featuring Fukumoto's work.

Fukumoto is probably best known in the west for creating the manga and anime Kaiji and Akagi. He is known for his idiosyncratic art style and for his focus on dark subject matter such as the psychology of gambling and organized crime.

“Zawa...zawa...” is a Japanese onomatopoeia that appears frequently in Fukumoto's work. It refers to an uneasy situation or an atmosphere of desperation. In addition to Fukumoto's artwork, the exhibition will also feature music and games designed to propel the visitors into the fictional worlds Fukumoto creates.

Tickets to the “Zawa...zawa” exhibition cost 500 ($ US) yen and come with a drink voucher. The exhibition runs from April 25 to July 5, 2015, at the GoFaLabo venue on Asagaya Anime Street in Tokyo, Japan.

Clinton Cash And The Clinton Rule

Darylsurat

Slightly odd to just note Carville as a guest contributor without noting he was a key adviser to their elections, but it's not directly relevant to this instance

Clinton Cash bookJames Carville is a guest contributor to Media Matters.

On March 12, I posted on Media Matters to discuss what I called the Clinton Rule. The Clinton Rule is as follows: There shall be one standard for covering everyone else in public life, and another standard for Hillary and Bill Clinton.

Well this week we got the ultimate proof of the Clinton Rule when The New York Times got its hands on a copy of Clinton Cash, a forthcoming book which purportedly claims that the State Department received favors from foreign entities that donated to The Clinton Foundation. Now, I wasn't the least bit surprised that the conservative media echo chamber immediately reverberated with cries of the "very damning" "bombshell," of a book that "could threaten [Hillary's] campaign." And I say purportedly because almost no one has read the book yet.

Here's the thing that did surprise me:

Never have we seen a more instant classic for followers of the Clinton Rule than with this latest tome. The book isn't even slated to be released for several weeks and yet The New York TimesThe Washington Post, and Fox News are in cahoots with the author -- reporting on what might be inside. I'll run you through the playbook.

Let's start with the facts. The star of this latest instance of the Clinton Rule is the author, Peter Schweizer. He's a discredited fringe conservative activist and former political aide to the likes of George W. Bush, Sarah Palin, and Bobby Jindal. That's a trifecta that pays a high dollar for pushing right wing conspiracies. Schweizer has worked for such "reputable" publications as Breitbart.com -- the same Breitbart.com that once called gun safety advocate Gabby Giffords a "human shield" for the gun safety movement. His right wing bona fides don't end there. Schweizer is even listed as a contributor to one of former Fox News host Glenn Beck's books.

Speaking of Schweizer's work -- back in 1998 he took on the "gay subculture" that was "blossoming" at Walt Disney World. In Disney: The Mouse Betrayed -- which is not listed on Schweizer's website with his other works -- he attacked the "gay activism" at the theme park, with special attention for the annual Gay Day at the Magic Kingdom. "There is a lot of openly displayed affection during the event -- holding hands, kissing, and the like," Schweizer wrote. God forbid.

Here's the deal, Peter Schweizer's new book out May 5 is likely to have serious problems -- one embarrassing error has reportedly already been found. As Media Matters noted this week, Schweizer has been called out at least ten times by journalists and independent fact checkers for getting his facts wrong in his previous articles and books. His past work has been called "incorrect," "bogus," and "a fatal shortcoming in journalism 101." In short, he's a SERIAL MISINFORMER.

Yet, The New York Times, Washington Post, and Fox News have all made exclusive agreements with Schweizer for early access to pursue "the story lines found in the book." I'm not shocked that Fox News took the shady deal here since Harper Collins, which is publishing Schweizer's book, is also owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. and is the sister company of Fox News' parent company 21st Century Fox. But I'm hard pressed to find any reason why The New York Times and The Washington Post would do the same except for the Clinton Rule.

The rule where every piece of nonsense the press can grab onto about the Clintons gets headline after headline.

But here's the thing, friends. The last time I remember a major media outlet hyping a right wing book this much was when CBS' 60 Minutes got duped by a guy whose tall tale included him scaling a 12 foot wall on the side of the diplomatic compound in Benghazi and dispatching a terrorist with his rifle butt. We all know how that ended: a book pulled from publication, a 60 Minutes report retracted, and a "journalistic review" which ended with a CBS reporter and producer taking a leave of absence.

All I'm saying here folks is this: The bottom line is that mainstream media must be up for the challenge. To all the reporters wanting to push the limits and take an advance look into the claims of a guy whose history of reporting is marked by errors and retractions, I say it's time to break the Clinton Rule. But in this case, I'm afraid the smarter bet is that we are going to see the same playbook over and over again.

Again, let me repeat what the Clinton Rule is: There shall be one standard for covering everyone else in public life, and another standard for the Clintons. After the latest antics on the part of The New York Times I am forced to add to the Clinton Rule. At The New York Times when it comes to the Clintons, there are no rules.

What You Should Know About Presidential Primary Coverage

by Susie Madrak
What You Should Know About Presidential Primary Coverage

Here's the first thing you need to know about the journalists covering the presidential primaries: They're young, and they're ambitious. This is their big shot. Because if their candidate wins, they will now be considered an "expert" and will get assigned to the White House. (Not to mention, possibly nailing down some lucrative cable news gig on the side -- or even a book deal.)

The other thing is, covering a presidential primary is a grind. Long, long days, crappy food when you get it, listening to the same speech many times a day (political reporters get to the point where they can recite it in their sleep) and lots of pressure from your news organization. You know those silly stories, those trumped-up scandals? It's what you get when you're told you have to file four or five stories a day. (Because if you don't file those stories, your news organization will find it hard to rationalize the expense of keeping you on the road.)

If the campaign is well-run and tightly disciplined, all you're going to get are non-stories like the one about Hillary not tipping in Chipotle. It's not about the future of the nation or even the candidates anymore -- it's about budget items, and clicks. Not news -- widgets.

So if campaign news gets to you, remember: It is to news what McDonald's is to fine dining.

"Mega Shark" Movie Gets an "Attack on Titan" Spin For Japan

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

Oh dear, it's real and not just a comical image from the other day

Following Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, Mega Shark Versus Crocosaurus and Mega Shark Versus Mecha Shark, The Asylum’s series of aquatic art films continues this July with Mega Shark vs. Kolossus. Christopher Ray returns to direct the feature in which a revived Cold War super weapon and the giant fish both threaten global security.

Japan will get an early look at the film during Qualite Fantastic! Cinema Collection 2015, an anual Shinjuku film festival (May 16-June 26) offering a survey of international indie flicks.

Now, if a giant "Kolossus" doesn't get you thinking about a certain popular anime series, the Japanese marketing might...

The Reverse Thieves Winter 2015 Anime Awards (This Is Where It Ends)

by reversethieves

This is something new for 2015. We’ve decided to starting highlighting each anime season with a mini-version of our end of the year awards. We hope this helps cap-off the season with a splash (and helps us remember all of great things by the time the end of the year rolls around). So without further ado, our picks for the best of winter 2015 . . .

Best of the Best

hisui_icon_4040 SHIROBAKO from P.A. Works It takes a special show to warm the hearts of the bitter and jaded in the Anitwitter community. Shirobako was the show that actually had a lot of people actually tuning in week after week to watch a show out of legitimate excitement and joy as opposed to spite and obligation. That alone makes it stand out from the pack.

The reason Shirobako was able to do that was because it infectious with it love for the creation of animation. You can’t watch the show and help but appreciate the hard work that goes into making anime. But it is not all sunshine and puppies. They throw in enough real life BS and petty politics so that is not just rose-colored view of industry. At the same time it keeps from falling into the pits of despair so it is not a black comedy. I’m sure there would be an audience for a savage parody of the anime industry (sort of like the Mellow Maromi episode of Paranoia Agent) but I enjoyed this mixture of realism and wish-fulfillment. It has just the right proportions of frustration and triumph to make you empathize with the people making the shows you watch every week.

Any show that enhances all the other shows you watch has to be praised for its accomplishments.

narutaki_icon_4040 Death Parade from MADHOUSE Welcome to Quindecim. A bar where the dead are confronted with their pasts and judged, then sent for reincarnation or into the void.

I was a huge fan of the original OVA Death Billiards, but was wary of them taking the concept and expanding if only because I didn’t want the mystique to be lost. Because of my original trepidation, I think I found Death Parade doubly impressive because it never lost what made the original great.

But it did add more layers such as what arbiters are, Decim’s particular quirks, and exactly why Chiyuki is there as an assistant. It added them and then satisfied me with their answers and endings.

Best Character

hisui_icon_4040 Emma Guzman from Garo: The Animation In general anime is medium that is filled with young people. The stereotypical anime cast is made up of teenagers with a few older characters mostly being in the background. So anytime we see a woman who is a bad ass widow as a main character it is something worth praising.

Emma is hyper competent and cool. While she is not a Makai Knights her alchemist abilities are quite powerful and she often holds her own with the male members of the cast. The fact that she is instrumental in every fight she participates in is praiseworthy. She was more of a fighter who had a different style than the rest of the cast as opposed to a mere support character.

She also has a decently well realized sense of sexuality. It is one thing to have a sexy older woman. They are not uncommon. It is another thing to make her sexually active in a way that promotes her in such a firmly empowered way. It is far too easy to make her hyper sexual for titillation but that was not going on here. It is merely a lightly touched upon aspect of her being.  It is neither played for laughs or something that overwhelms her characters other traits.

She is definitely a good character to look at if you want an example of how to do older female character correctly.

narutaki_icon_4040 Fumina Hoshino from Gundam Build Fighters Try The instigator, the captain, the glue which holds team Try Fighters together. I was so pleased to see her evolve over the course of the show alongside her teammates, especially in the building of her Gunpla. In the end, she wa able to see her personal battle through to the end while also making a heroic sacrifice typical of heroes.

I hardly need to write more about her though considering we did a whole post about her fantasticness.

P.S. I definitely endorse Al’s choice of Emma!

Best Finale

hisui_icon_4040 Yurikuma Arashi from Silver Link I saw some people complain that the ending to Yurikuma Arashi was pretty much a just standard Kunihiko Ikuhara ending. That is like complaining that your desert is just a big piece of delicious tiramisu. I guess if that is not to your tastes then you as disappointed but I got exactly what I wanted.

I feel like with Revolutionary Girl Utena and Penguindrum I was right on board from the start. Yurikuma Arashi had me a little worried. I saw that there was a good deal of potential in the themes and symbolism he was laying down but the crazy levels of fan service planted some doubts. Did Ikuhara just sell out to the dark side of the force? As the series went on it was clear that he had more meaning hidden beneath the surface just like his previous shows. By the end I can’t say I had deciphered everything but his primary message came through loud and clear.

He ends a little but ambiguous but always satisfyingly strong. When you see the blossoming love between the pigtailed laser operator and her undead cyborg bear you know things are going to be all right.

narutaki_icon_4040 Yowamushi Pedal: Grande Road from TMS It was a long, arduous race with the 3rd day being so eventful that it lasted an entire season. When that journey came to a close I felt my heart swell with pride and with that bit of melancholy that accompanies the end of a story.

How does one say goodbye? Yowamushi Pedal did it surprisingly well with perhaps the most perfect send off from Onoda that one could have.

Best Surprise of the Season

hisui_icon_4040 Yowamushi Pedal: Grande Road Final I think the people who fought it out in the last leg of the Inter High surprised me a great deal. If you asked me at the start of the season who I thought would be still standing in the last mile of the race there were certain characters I was 100% sure to be involved that dropped out for one reason or another. I just assumed they would go the distance. It was clearly foreshadowed that members of all the main teams would not be able to complete the race. That was a given. But how it all went down caught me off guard.

That was a pleasant surprise overall.

narutaki_icon_4040 Durarara!! Starts Becoming Baccano! Obviously the writer has certain quirks and personalities that he likes to play with, but I didn’t really imagine the residents of Ikebukuro as coming closer to the mob trappings of Baccano! and yet here we are.

Best Couple (Real or Imagined)

hisui_icon_4040 Decim and Chiyuki from Death Parade We usually pick characters here for shipping purposes. Who do we think has a great sexual chemistry? The thing is I’m not even sure if sex is something that Decim could personally care about. So in that regard they are a poor choice. But their emotional connection is unparalleled.

At first Decim and Chiyuki are just coworkers at the at Quindecim bar presiding over the judgment of souls. As the series goes on as both of them learn more about what Chiyuki’s role is they forge an intense connection that clearly changes both of them. By the end of the series they have a bond that is clearly more than a friendship.

They are probably one of the more memorable couples I have seen in a while. If you don’t get a little choked up by the last episode I might be a little worried about you.

narutaki_icon_4040 Endou and Segawa from SHIROBAKO I don’t even know why I like them so much, it is like instinct or something. I guess I just like that she clearly intimidates him.

Best Laugh Out Loud Moment

hisui_icon_4040 Yurikuma Arashi “Shaba-da-doo” This was a simple pick:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nnGfhVN5MA

narutaki_icon_4040 Midousuji from Yowamushi Pedal GROSS.

Best Opening

hisui_icon_4040 The Rolling GirlsHito ni Yasashiku” by The Rolling Girls If Rolling Girls got one piece of near universal praise it was for its visuals. They really stand out with a colorful and energetic panache. The opening to the show highlights that perfectly. The song really captures the upbeat road trip nature of the show with a bit of its rock and roll sensibilities. In many ways it is all that is best and brightest about the show.

narutaki_icon_4040 Death ParadeFlyers” by BRADIO Best and “most incongruous with its actual content” opening. It was as if this opening was there to put you in a great mood only to push you over a cliff.

Best Ending

hisui_icon_4040 SHIROBAKOPlatinum Jet” by Donut◎Quintet It makes sense. The show that is all about making anime should have an ending that is the same exact thing. The credits show how much work goes into even the simplest still frame at the end of an episode. Every week the ending was changed and it showed another of the four girls being added to the picture as she goes from being just some concept art to a fully rendered character.  Just another case of something seeming very simple but actually be far more work than most people would ever realize.

Plus I think Kate probably appreciated that those dolls were no longer the focus of the ending. I know I did.

narutaki_icon_4040 Durarara!!x2 ShouNEVER SAY NEVER” by THREE LIGHTS DOWN KINGS A continuation of the second ending to the first series, this highlights how everyone is connected in the story.

Attorney To CNN's Cop Defender: Broken Tail Light Is 'Code' To Harass Blacks

Attorney To CNN's Cop Defender: Broken Tail Light Is 'Code' To Harass Blacks

Defense attorney Mark Geragos on Tuesday argued over the objections of retired NYPD Detective Harry Houck that the shooting of an unarmed South Carolina man was just the latest in an "epidemic" of police officers killing black men.

After video surfaced on Tuesday of North Charleston Officer Michael Slager, who is white, shooting 50-year-old Walter L. Scott in the back as he fled, Van Jones explained to CNN host Anderson Cooper that there would have been no murder charges if the incident had not been recorded by a cell phone.

"We see this over and over again, the police report says, 'This black man is dangerous, 'I was so afraid for my life, oh my God, I had to do something, he was going to kill me,'" Jones noted. "And now we finally have something where nobody can say that the police report was true, and you get this murder charge."

"But what if there had been no video? What if it had just been another situation where another unarmed black man was killed and the police officer said, 'Well, he grabbed me, he had my weapon,' and we would have all gone on as if nothing happened. We have to start dealing with the fact that there are two standards of justice in this country."

Geragos agreed that similar incidents happened "all too frequently."

Article Profiles the Opening of Crowd-Funded Anime Dorm

by news+feed@crunchyroll.com

The Asahi Shimbun newspaper has published an English language article profiling the opening of the “Dorm for fresh-faced animators”, a project created by the Tokyo-based non-profit group Animator Supporting Organization.

As previously reported, the financing for this project was crowd-funded. The “Dorm for fresh-faced animators” currently houses two young animators, Tetsuya Akutsu and Masaaki Tanaka, in a shared apartment, and there are plans to welcome another pair of animators into the fold later in April.

Pictured above: Tanaka (left) and Akutsu (right) with Jun Sugawara (center), the president of the Animator Supporting Organization.

Sugaware admits that so far the project has only had a small impact on the problems facing young animators, but that he finds it rewarding to help out in this manner.

State Senator Calls Advocate 'Asshole' For Asking Him To Give Up His Health Coverage

Sounds like a real sweetheart, huh?

On Tuesday night, a Tennessee Senate committee voted to deny some 280,000 state residents access to health care, rejecting a plan to expand Medicaid that would have cost the state nothing.

Following the vote, advocates for expansion ran into state Sen. Todd Gardenhire (R), awealth manager at Morgan Stanley who sits on the committee. One activist, Damien Crisp, asked Gardenhire if he would be willing to give up his own state-subsidized health insurance.

Gardenhire, in a video of the incident taken by another activist, turned around and said something along the lines of "Not giving it up, asshole" or, perhaps, "Why don't you give it up, asshole?" ("Asshole" is the clearest part of his rejoinder.)
