Bike clothes

by Joanna Goddard
Mikkele.bringard

love this

My beloved bike was stolen yesterday, so I'm in the market for a new one. (Curses, NYC! It will be the sixth bike I've had since I moved here, crazily enough.) But on a happier note, how awesome are these bike clothes by a Seattle designer? This skirt, for example, unzips in the back to reveal 12" of additional fabric for easy pedaling. The fabric is stretchy, and the skirt has a higher waist for coverage while leaning forward. Genius.

P.S. NYC bikes and bicycle rush hour.

We Can All Agree Obama's Plan for Keeping His Kids From Getting Tattoos Is Pretty Good

There are so few things anyone can agree on about politics these days. Throw two rocks in a crowd, you'll hit two people who disagree about politics. So, it's nice to find one political strategy that can bring the country together in affirming that it's a pretty good idea, even if it is only a "political strategy" in that it is a strategy that a politician came up with, one that has no bearing on actual politics whatsoever. It involves President Barack Obama's method of convincing his two girls to not get any tattoos. As he told the Today Show,

“What we’ve said to the girls is, ‘If you guys ever decided you’re going to get a tattoo, then mommy and me will get the exact same tattoo in the same place. And we’ll go on YouTube and show it off as a family tattoo,’” Obama told Savannah Guthrie. “And our thinking is that might dissuade them from thinking that somehow that’s a good way to rebel.”

Not bad, Mr. President. Now, if we could only find a way to turn that jobs report around ...

Evidently ‘iPad Addiction’ Is Now a Problem

A recent study in the UK has found that iPad addiction is an increasingly growing problem among young children. According to one doctor, the withdraw symptoms can become so severe, that they resemble that of “alcoholics or heroin addicts”. In a survey, the researchers found that one out of seven parents allowed their child to play with a digital mobile device for at least four hours a day, leading to a compulsive need to always have it. One solution offered by doctors: Allow them only to play Fruit Ninja. That game gets pretty boring after about an hour …

The Steering Wheel Drum Kit: The World’s Best/Worst Idea

Introducing the “Smack Attack”, a drum machine that attaches to your steering wheel. The digital percussion kit plays actual drum sounds (cymbal, high-hat, kick, snare, etc.) over top of the music playing from your iPod or iPhone. Though playing Guitar Hero-like games while operating a motor vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed may sound like a terrible idea, the device’s makers claim it will actually keep you more alert (hmmm). However, it does provide the answer to the question anyone who has listened to music in the car has ever asked: “I wonder what this song would sound like with more cowbell” …

Ikea Monkey: Trial of the Century Court Date Set

Some of the world’s foremost scholars of law, the international criminal justice system and monkey ownership policy will gather on May 30-31 and June 10-11 to discuss the fate of the infamous Ikea monkey. The tiny primate, who took the Internet by storm when he was found aimlessly wandering a Canadian Ikea store wearing a glorious fur coat, has been in the custody of Toronto Animal Services ever since. Now, his owner say she is willing to pay whatever cost (she estimates the legal bills to reach as high as $300,000) to bring him home. Because you really can’t put a price tag on justice …

Boston On Lockdown

Eerie shots of one of America's largest cities on total lockdown, as an estimated 9,000—10,000 armed personnel turn the city upside down in search of one person, 19-year-old Dzhokar Tsarnaev. Police are currently going door-to-door in Watertown, searching every home. In the meantime, all Boston residents are being told to remain indoors. The result are these pictures of an empty city. We at RELEVANT are praying for the safety of the police, the FBI and everyone else in Boston until this thing is over. ...

blood orange margaritas

blood orange margaritas

Is everyone on vacation without you? Are your social media feeds one big blur of the freckled faces of people you once thought you loved basking in the Caribbean sun, showing unintentional contempt for you, back here, shivering and damp? Do your so-called friends in warmer climes gush about pea tendrils and new artichokes while your local market has shriveled roots that last saw the unfrozen earth in October? Of last year? Maybe, just this one time, an exception should be made and a tidy, brief pity party would be acceptable. I have just the elixir.

blood oranges
freshly squeezed blood orange juice

You may not be in the tropics, but glass-for-glass, we can fake it. You may not have fresh coconuts overhead and sweet mango and papaya slices on your breakfast plate, but if we hurry, we can grab onto the tail end of blood orange season and squeeze it into something better.

Slovenia-based photographer Matej Peljhan recently teamed up with a 12-year-named Luka who suffers from muscular dystrophy, to create a wildly imaginative series of photos depicting the boy doing things he is simply unable to do because of his degenerative condition. While he can still use his fingers to drive a wheelchair and to draw, things like skateboarding and swimming are simply not possible.

After having a conversation with Luka about his understandably normal desire to play sports or go swimming, Peljan was struck with the idea to create a non-digitally manipulated series of photographs showing the boy conquering a number of imaginary physical feats. The photographer used sheets and other props as a backdrop and shot Luca from above to capture each image, showing clearly the boy’s strength and shared sense of humor. See more photos from the series on the photographer’s website. All images courtesy the artist. (via peta pixel)

A New iPhone Camera Lens Kickstarter Campaign

A new Kickstarter campaign is attempting to fund a product aimed at iPhone photo enthusiasts. The WoW Lens Case fits over the back of an iPhone, and uses a special dial to allow users to add new lenses (like a zoom or wide-angle) to the phone’s built-in camera. So far, they’ve raised just over $6,000 of their $50,000 goal. Now, if only they’d invent a way for us to take pictures of our homemade lasagna and make it look like it was from a 1970s cookbook, or somehow give all of our sun-set photos a retro feel …

Like a freak midnight rainbow, this ongoing series of lit waterfalls titled Neon Luminance is part of a collaboration between Sean Lenz and Kristoffer Abildgaard over at From the Lenz. The duo dropped high-powered Cyalume glow sticks in a variety of colors into various waterfalls in Northern California and then made exposures varying from 30 seconds to 7 minutes to capture the submerged trails of light as the sticks moved through the current. To accomplish some of the more complicated shots they strung several sticks together at once to create different patterns of illumination. For those of you concerned about pollution, the sticks (which are buoyant) were never opened and were collected at the end of each exposure, thus no toxic goo was mixed into the water. See more from the project on their website.

Artist Hong Yi Plays with her Food for 30 Days food

For almost every day last month Malaysian artist/architect Hong Yi (who often goes by the nickname Red) created a fun illustration made with common (and occasionally not so common) food. Her parameters were simple: the image had to be comprised entirely of food and the only backdrop could be a white plate. With that in mind Yi set out to create landscapes, animals, homages to pop culture, and even a multi-frame telling of the three little pigs. The project, which still appears to be ongoing, has been documented heavily around the web, but if you haven’t seen it all head over to her Facebook and read an interview on designboom. Photos will also be appearing on her Instagram at @redhongyi.

Designed by Chen Lu Wei for Megawing this fun set of four erasers lets you assume the role of barber while you work, all you have to do first is make a mistake. By using the eraser you slowly shave away the rubbery hair surface resulting in a funky new hairdo for your desktop pal, effectively turning an act of destruction into an act of creation every time you erase. Pretty sure my kid would just start with the face. May or may no be available here. (via co.design)
