ONE LAW FOR THE RICH, LITERALLY: Any middle-class would-be investor knows it’s hard to find somewhere to let your money grow these days. The SEC could be just about to make it even harder. As John Berlau explains at the Washington Times:

If it goes into effect, the regulation would cripple investors’ ability to buy dozens of funds they can now purchase on American stock exchanges for zero-dollar commissions from discount brokerages and investing apps such as Robinhood. Under the regulation, investors could not purchase these funds unless they can answer an extensive questionnaire of highly personal questions about their investing knowledge and household assets to the SEC’s satisfaction. SEC Republican Commissioners Hester Peirce and Elad Roisman have blasted the regulation as a “blunt overly paternalistic approach to investor protection.”

While the Trump administration is still deregulating, independent agencies like the SEC can head in the other direction.

FOREIGN INTERFERENCE: $30 Million Gift To Yale Law School Is Part Of Government Probe Into Foreign Funding Of Universities. “Department officials said this week that they believe Yale may have failed to report at least $375 million in foreign gifts and contracts in recent years, and that Harvard has also failed to fully disclose foreign gifts.”

To what extent is the adoption of anti-American positions by elite universities the product of foreign bribery and influence? We may find out.

EVERY LEFTIST’S GOAL: Criminalizing Dissent.

Louis Shenker, a 21-year-old junior at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, just wanted his MAGA hat back from the graduate student who ripped it off his head on campus. He wore the hat to a December 6, 2018 protest organized by the university’s graduate student union against Trump and local police. Video shows that when Louis, who is 5’6’’ and 140 pounds, arrived wearing the MAGA hat and holding a large sign, he was immediately surrounded by a hostile mob of older grad students cursing at him and calling him a white supremacist. A woman lunged from the mob and snatched Louis’s MAGA hat. Careful not to get caught on camera hitting Louis with their hands, they instead mobbed him like a colony of enraged penguins, using their bodies to push him from all sides, occasionally pecking at his head with their cardboard signs, and chanting in unison: “THE PEOPLE, UNITED, WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED.”

“Get the f**k out of here, you shouldn’t be in an anti-racist march!” screamed the hat thief. A soft-spoken professor in the crowd warned Louis: “It’s actually dangerous for you to come by yourself like that.” As the protesters began to march and Louis tried to keep up while pleading for his hat, many of them, including several graduate student union members dressed in United Auto Workers gear, elbowed Louis into walls, lampposts, and other obstacles. “You act like a Nazi, you’re going to get treated like a Nazi,” a female protester yelled at the Jewish grandson of Holocaust victims. Louis left without his hat.

A month later, Louis was horrified to recognize the woman who stole his MAGA hat as Beth Peller, a 36-year-old grad student who would be teaching his mandatory freshman writing class.

CHRISTIAN TOTO: Letterboxd Bans Black Libertarian Film Critic’s Reviews.

The Libertarian film critic oversees Society Reviews. The web site critiques movies from an unabashedly right-of-center perspective. Smith also shares hundreds of his film reviews with the popular social media site Letterboxd.com.

Or, at least he did.

The service allows folks who may not have their own media outlet a chance to share reviews with the public.

Smith recently got booted from Letterboxd.com, which removed all of his reviews without notice. HiT reached out to Smith to find out the story behind the purge.

Click on over for the interview.

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: University refuses to clarify posting policy after claiming conservative group was in violation of it. But what makes this fun is the novel excuse: “A public university in northern Virginia is refusing to clarify its flyer posting policy following its claims that a campus conservative group was in violation of that policy. The school cited ongoing concerns regarding the coronavirus as the reason it could not comment.”

by Stephen Green

BUILT TO LAST: NASA’s Voyager 2 endures technical hiccup at 11.5 billion miles away.

It’s a challenge to diagnose and fix problems on the twin probes due to their sheer distance from Earth. Voyager 2 is located about 11.5 billion miles (18.5 billion kilometers) away.

“Communications traveling at the speed of light take about 17 hours to reach the spacecraft, and it takes another 17 hours for a response from the spacecraft to return to Earth,” NASA said in a statement on Tuesday.

Voyager 2 launched in 1977. It has shown remarkable resilience despite the great distance it has covered. The spacecraft’s power availability shrinks a little every year, but it is still gathering data to help scientists learn about what’s happening at the edge of our solar system.

So far, it looks like Voyager 2’s safety systems worked as designed and that it should be able to continue its epic journey into the cosmos.

With hands-on maintenance, a car might go 250,000 miles.

HIGHER EDUCATION BUBBLE UPDATE: Ike was right: The Intellectual and Moral Decline in Academic Research.

In his 1961 farewell address, President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned that the pursuit of government grants would have a corrupting influence on the scientific community. He feared that while American universities were “historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery,” the pursuit of taxpayer monies would become “a substitute for intellectual curiosity” and lead to “domination of the nation’s scholars by Federal employment…and the power of money.”

Eisenhower’s fears were well-founded and prescient.

My experiences at four research universities and as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) research fellow taught me that the relentless pursuit of taxpayer funding has eliminated curiosity, basic competence, and scientific integrity in many fields.

Indeed.
