BECAUSE THEY’RE SWAMP CREATURES. THAT’S WHAT THEY DO. In another episode of “We Have to Pass It to See What’s In It” it turns out that the COVID bill exempts the Federal Reserve from their obligation under the law to make their records public. Politico reports that:

“Tucked into the recent recovery bill was a provision granting the Federal Reserve the right to set up a $450 billion bailout plan without following key provisions of the federal open meetings law, including announcing its meetings or keeping most records about them, according to a POLITICO review of the legislation.”

Even worse, when contacted by POLITICO, the Senators wouldn’t take ownership of the provision:

Spokespeople for Sens. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), the chairman and ranking member on the Senate Banking committee, declined to comment on how the change was added to the recovery bill or who requested it.

Oh, yeah, I said some stuff, too.

UNREASONING HATRED IS A BAD LOOK, AND MAKES YOU STUPID: The Left’s Ugly Reaction to Hydroxychloroquine. “Trump probably owns less than $100 of Sanofi stock in one of his mutual funds. If things go well, say he triples his position, Trump will be taking in upwards of $300. Art of the Deal, indeed. . . . Can you imagine any major publication running a piece linking Barack Obama’s praise of GM’s heavily subsidized electric-car manufacturing to a thousand bucks in a mutual fund? Nor should it escape your attention that the New York Times will assign four reporters to write an amateurish hit job, but not a single one to mention serious rape allegations against the leading Democratic Party presidential candidate by a former staffer.”

Even Snopes is debunking the Trump-is-profiteering-on-hydroxychloroquine claims. I used to laugh at the crazed conspiracy theories that flourished among illiterate third-worlders. Not anymore.

Meanwhile, how many people may die because of this misinformation — or perhaps disinformation would be a better term? Why does the New York Times want people to die?

STOP THEM BEFORE THEY REGULATE AGAIN: The FDA Graveyard. For decades, the FDA’s archaic rules have been delaying medical progress and consigning tens of millions of Americans to an “invisible graveyard.” Now a very small part of the graveyard has suddenly become visible: the people dying of Covid-19 because of one bureaucratic obstruction after another to providing tests, masks and other protective equipment.

LOTS OF DEREGULATORY LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM CORONAVIRUS: Don’t expect to read about it in the MSM but lots of bureaucratic red tape in the health care field is being waived to speed the official response to the coronavirus pandemic. Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) and the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) are compiling lists, pointing to additional areas for action and making the case for permanent reforms.

HMM: New York’s Coronavirus Death Toll is Almost Certainly Far Higher Than Reported. “Before the pandemic struck New York City, 20-25 people a day were dying at home according to the city medical examiner’s office. Now, that number is more than 200, raising questions about how many of those who die in their own beds actually died of coronavirus.”

That’s troubling. Hospitals have almost certainly been overcounting COVID-19 deaths, but what else could account for such an increase in in-home deaths?

Colorado Man Handcuffed in Front of His 6-Year-Old Daughter at Park For ‘Violating Social Distancing Order’ (VIDEO)

by Cristina Laila

The cops are definitely not 6' apart. I'm afraid they're going to have to arrest each other.

The criminals are being released from prison and being replaced with peaceful, law-abiding citizens who dare go outside.

A 33-year-old Colorado man was handcuffed in front of his wife and 6-year-old daughter for allegedly violating a social distancing order.

33-year-old Matt Mooney said his young daughter was terrified the police were going to arrest him after the cops swarmed his family.

The father reassured his daughter they were doing nothing wrong by playing tee-ball in the park, however the police cuffed him in front of the little girl.

KDVR reports:

Matt Mooney feels Brighton police owe him a huge apology. The 33-year-old says he was handcuffed at Donelson Park in front of his 6-year-old daughter Sunday afternoon after police told him he violated the state’s social distancing guidelines.

Mooney told the FOX31 Problem Solvers he refused to provide his identification to three police officers because he was confident he wasn’t doing anything unlawful by playing tee-ball with his wife and daughter at the park.

“She’s like, ‘Daddy, I don’t want you to get arrested.’ At this point I’m thinking, ‘There’s no way they’re going to arrest me, this is insane.’ I’m telling her, ‘Don’t worry, Daddy’s not going to get arrested. I’ve done nothing wrong. Don’t worry about it,’ and then they arrest me.”

The incident was recorded by former Brighton City Councilman Kirby Wallin.

“He’s being taken by the Brighton police for playing softball with his daughter in an empty park,” Wallin said.

In an interview with the Problem Solvers, Wallin said, “I find it hard to believe with all the things going on in our communities, the only way to resolve a situation like this was to handcuff a father in front of his daughter.”

The sign at the park said: “in groups of no more than 4 persons, parks remain open for walking, hiking, biking, running and similar activities.”

Mooney said he was at the park with his wife and 1 daughter (less than 4 people) and that it was the police who were violating the social distancing order.

“During the contact, none of the officers had masks on, none of them had gloves on, and they’re in my face handcuffing me, they’re touching me,” he said.

The father was released by the cops after spending about 10 minutes in the back of a patrol car.

“If we’re going to go ahead and start arresting people for no reason in front of their 6-year-old daughter, you’re just going to cause more problems later on,” he said.

The Brighton police department said in a Facebook post on Sunday it is conducting an investigation into the incident.

“The Brighton Police Department is conducting an investigation into a situation that occurred late this afternoon at Donelson Park. This is an active investigation and so we are unable to provide additional information until the investigation is complete.”

COVID19 update, April 7, 2020: hemoglobin, COVID19, and hydroxychloroquine; miscellaneous updates

by Nitay Arbel (a.k.a. New Class Traitor)

A potentially HUGE finding in a preprint suggests a radically different mechanism for hydroxychloroquine’s action in COVID19. TL;DR in layman language: that a lot of the hypoxyia (oxygen starvation) of severe COVID-19 patients is due to hemoglobin in red blood cells being disrupted by the virus (as it is by the malaria pathogen), and that hydroxychloroquine protects hemoglobin in both diseases. A layman’s discussion can be found here.

“Masgramondou” has an origin hypothesis for the outbreak that sounds disturbingly plausible to anyone who subscribes to the “incompetence before malice” or “c*ck-up before conspiracy” principle.

How helpful is soap against COVID-19? If yes, why? The American Chemical Society has a helpful YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2pMVimI2bw

Israel, which saw super-spreader events during Purim parties a month ago, is now taking the drastic step of imposing a curfew from a few hours before the Passover seder until the next morning. Seders are to be done strictly in the home, nuclear family only, no guests.

THIS IS INTERESTING: Massachusetts General Hospital among first to test nitric oxide on pandemic patients: Nitric oxide has been considered a miracle drug for helping oxygen-starved newborns. “We have tremendous confidence this therapy will alter the devastating effects of COVID-19 but we must test it. If results show promise, and since this gas is already FDA approved, widespread use could begin immediately.”

Somebody told me the other day that people are using nitric-oxide boosters like Viagra and Cialis as a treatment, too, but I haven’t seen any stories on that. Here’s a clinical trial listing, though.

QUESTION ASKED: Who the hell is in charge of Orange County?

Locally, at 2:26 p.m. on March 17, we got an Order from the County (this Order and the aftermath all pre-dated the statewide shutdown, but is still instructive as to our leaders). Here’s what they ordered: “Effective immediately…the following will be in effect in Orange County: 1. All public and private gatherings of any number of people, including at places of work…are prohibited.”

Just to make sure you were paying attention, the County closed with a warning: “this Order may be enforced by the Sheriff or chiefs of police.” Serious stuff. Businesses were closed, effective immediately, and the cops could come after you for disobedience.

Where did this strong medicine come from?

This was the valid Order of Orange County’s Health Officer. Who is that and who elected her? No one knew—before March 17 that is, when, suddenly, no one could go to work and each had ample time to Google this doctor who had just unemployed them. Turns out she, ultimately, works for the County Board of Supervisors. They are elected by the People. But their bureaucrat doctor, seemingly without their approval, shut down by fiat all “non-essential” businesses in a county of over 3 million people.

How did we get from “the aim of every political constitution”—from republican government—to here?

Elsewhere in Southern California: Paddleboarder arrested at Malibu Pier for flouting state stay at home order. As Joel Engel tweets, “Genius. He was miles from another soul until confronted face-to-face by the deputies, then who knows how many others at the sheriff’s substation. ‘We had to destroy the village in order to save it.'”

by Stephen Green

ELI LAKE: The FBI Can’t Be Trusted With the Surveillance of Americans.

On Tuesday, the Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz issued a new report that found systematic errors of fact in the FBI’s applications for warrants under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. The memo does not speak to the materiality or significance of those errors — but they are startling nonetheless.

Out of 42 applications, the report says, 39 included major defects. All told, the inspector general uncovered 390 deficiencies, including “unverified, inaccurate, or inadequately supported facts, as well as typographical errors.”

The memo follows the report Horowitz issued in December that reviewed four FISA warrants for Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to then-candidate Donald Trump’s 2106 presidential campaign. The bureau suspected him of being a Russian agent, but the report found that it repeatedly relied on an opposition research dossier to persuade the secret court to renew the surveillance warrant even after agents knew the dossier was riddled with errors. Rules that have been in place for nearly 20 years to verify the accuracy of facts presented in the warrant and include exculpatory information, known as the Woods procedures, were ignored.

Read the whole thing.

THAT’S A HOLLOW THREAT, GIVEN THEIR STAFFING PROBLEMS: Hospitals Tell Doctors They’ll Be Fired If They Speak Out About Lack of Gear. “Ming Lin, an emergency room physician in Washington state, said he was told Friday he was out of a job because he’d given an interview to a newspaper about a Facebook post detailing what he believed to be inadequate protective equipment and testing. In Chicago, a nurse was fired after emailing colleagues that she wanted to wear a more protective mask while on duty. In New York, the NYU Langone Health system has warned employees they could be terminated if they talk to the media without authorization.”

And the claim that this is about protecting “patient privacy” is bullshit.
