The Star Wars x Le Creuset collection features Darth Vader Dutch ovens and Porg pie birds

by Dami Lee

Le Creuset has had its fair share of Disney collaborations, including Mickey Mouse ramekins, Beauty and the Beast Dutch ovens, and red apple-shaped casserole dishes, a la Snow White. Now, it’s adding some Star Wars-themed cookware.

The array of products featured in the Star Wars x Le Creuset collection is impressive: there’s a “Han Solo in Carbonite” roaster, a Porg pie bird (a ceramic bird you put in the middle of your pies to let the steam out while they’re baking), Death Star and Millennium Falcon silicone trivets, Dutch ovens and mini cocottes that come in BB-8, R2-D2 and C-3PO finishes, and a Darth Vader Dutch oven.

Be sure to watch the video below with the sound on because there’s nothing funnier than some cookware being...

Robots are mass-producing the meal of the future: insects

by William Poor
Jaredlieberher

Our awesome future: Insects and shipping containers....

edible cricket snack about to be consumed

Around the world, an estimated 2 billion people welcome insects into their regular diets. Insects can be an excellent food: many species are chock-full of fat, protein, vitamins, and fiber. Yet in places like the United States and Europe, consumers are historically resistant to the idea of entomophagy (insects as cuisine).

But that may be changing. In 2013, the United Nations published a landmark report entitled “Edible Insects: future prospects for food and feed security.” Against the backdrop of overpopulation, food and land scarcity, and climate change, the report makes a compelling case for insects as the sustainable livestock option. Insects emit far fewer greenhouse gases than cattle or pigs, and raising them at scale ties up a...

30 Years Ago: A Look Back at 1989 (43 photos)

Three decades ago, a number of uprisings took place around the world, with unhappy citizens taking to the streets—and in some cases, taking up arms—to try to change or remove their governments. A student-led pro-democracy demonstration in China’s Tiananmen Square was violently crushed in June, while hundreds of thousands of anti-Communist protesters in Czechoslovakia were able to bring about a nonviolent “Velvet Revolution.” It was also the year of the Loma Prieta earthquake in Northern California, the inauguration of President George H. W. Bush, the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and much more. Photographers were also busy documenting the lives of Harrison Ford, Michael Jackson, Steve Jobs, Menudo, and many others. Take a step into a visual time capsule now, for a brief look at the year 1989.

A Chinese man stands alone to block a line of tanks heading east in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989. The man, calling for an end to the violence and bloodshed against pro-democracy demonstrators, was pulled away by bystanders, and the tanks continued on their way. The Chinese government crushed a student-led demonstration for democratic reform and against government corruption, killing hundreds, or perhaps thousands of demonstrators in the strongest anti-government protest since the 1949 revolution. Essential reveals Project Gem smartphone with very long, unusual design

by Sean Hollister
Image: Essential (modified by The Verge)

We know next to nothing about the images you’re about to see — except that they don’t look like any phone we’ve ever seen before, and that they come from Andy Rubin, the controversial mobile industry executive who co-founded Android, left Google amid allegations of sexual misconduct while retaining a huge severance package, and went on to create the Essential Phone. (He also co-created the T-Mobile Sidekick, aka Danger Hiptop, many years ago.)

The photos appear to show an elongated phone with a very, very tall UI composed of card-like apps, but with big buttons that look like they’d be perfectly at home on a smartwatch. It look...

Jeopardy! Airs A Hilariously Incorrect Bit Of Tetris Trivia

by Chris Kohler

I haven’t watched much Jeopardy! since my personal hero James Holzhauer left the show, but had I tuned in last night, I would probably have found myself wondering if I had taken leave of my senses, following this question about Tetris in the category “Video Game-Pourri.”

Augmented Reality is making industrial work more productive

by Jim Salter
Jaredlieberher

Nerdy, but cool. imagine hacking this. I love the future...mostly.

  • This is a screenshot of a Fieldbit AR view of a water treatment plant. The user can see equipment identification and telemetry tagged directly to individual machines. [credit: Fieldbit ]

Veolia Water Technologies, a transnational water treatment specialist firm, is partnering with a company called Fieldbit to bring Augmented Reality to the plant floor. Don't feel bad if your first reaction to that statement is "huh?"—ours was, too. If you've ever had to work on unfamiliar or semi-familiar physical equipment, though, it gets pretty interesting.

We spoke to Robert Kodweis, Fieldbit's VP of operations, to get a better picture of what the company really does. Fieldbit is a software company, and its apps are relatively hardware-agnostic. Users can experience AR (Augmented Reality) marked-up views of equipment and spaces through smartglasses such as Realwear's HMT-1, or by using an Android smartphone app to mark up video from the phone's camera in real time—something like Pokémon Go for the industrial floor.

  • In this shot, a lineman wearing the HMT-1 AR headgear has both hands free for climbing. [credit: Realwear ]

We pressed Kodweis pretty hard on the apparent AI aspects of the application. Since the press photos we saw mostly seemed to focus on tagging particular equipment with its own telemetry via AR, we wanted to know how the system was trained to reliably recognize individual machines without seeing identification plates and serial numbers. Kodweis explained that while this spatial computing is indeed possible, it's not the big focus of Fieldbit's collaboration with Veolia.

NBC looking to reboot The Office for Peacock streaming service

by Julia Alexander
the-office-nbc-netflix

It was only a matter of time: NBC is actively looking to reboot The Office.

“It is my hope and goal that we do an Office reboot,” Bonnie Hammer, chairman of direct-to-consumer and digital enterprises at NBC, told Deadline.

A reboot of the series makes sense for Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service which will launch in April 2020 with an assortment of originals, catalog titles, and reboots, according to Deadline. The Office is one of NBC’s most popular titles, and a key driver in Peacock’s attempt to bring subscribers in. The company reportedly spent $500 million on securing the exclusive rights to The Office, which is currently streaming on Netflix but will be on Peacock beginning in 2021. Going all-in on a show that is still...

Step aside, long Furbies — long Hatchimals have arrived

by Dami Lee
Image: Hatchimals

Hatchimals, the line of best-selling collectible toys, which includes the robotic stuffed bird that “hatches” itself into existence, is debuting a new, very long addition today. Its name is Llalacorn: it’s part unicorn, part llama, and it’s got an extendable neck that lets it grow up to 32 inches tall. Llalacorn has style and glamour, and it’s coming for Long Furby’s spot as the de facto cursed toy of the internet.

Spin Master’s Hatchimals WOW comes in purple or pink, but you won’t know which one you get until you hatch it by tilting the egg back and forth. When it’s ready, the rainbow eyes will light up through the shell, and it’ll stretch out its neck and push the egg top off. It’ll take five minutes for it to assume its final form....

Nextdoor’s new Kindness Reminder wants to stop neighbors from being so mean

by Jon Porter

Image: Nextdoor

Nextdoor, the social networking app for neighborhoods, is adding a new Kindness Reminder feature to try and dissuade neighbors from posting mean comments. Now, if you try and post a comment that is too similar to one that’s been flagged in the past, the app will prompt you to edit your response and provide a link to community guidelines.

Over the years, Nextdoor has gained a reputation for the petty, and occasionally mean comments that some of its users leave on the platform, especially compared to rival neighborhood message board Front Porch Forum. The best examples of these can be found on the Twitter account Best of Nextdoor which, somewhat unsurprisingly, the company’s ex-CEO Nirav Tolia wasn’t particularly fond of.

UFC Fighter Plays Smash While His Tesla Drives Itself

by Luke Plunkett

Tesla cars have an “Autopilot” feature where the car can, on a long straight drive like a highway, take care of some stuff like lane changes and cruise control. The driver is supposed to still be paying attention, but some people—like UFC fighter Kevin Lee—haven’t got time for that.

by Julia Alexander

Friends might be leaving Netflix next year, but the streaming service just landed another giant beloved series: Seinfeld.

Seinfeld will be available to stream on Netflix beginning in 2021, the company announced today. That’s when the show’s contract with Hulu (now owned by Disney) comes to an end. It’s unclear how much Netflix paid for the show, but it was rumored to be in the same wheelhouse as WarnerMedia’s Friends deal, which was reported at $425 million.

Seinfeld is a one-of-a-kind, iconic, culture-defining show,” Sony Pictures Television Chairman Mike Hopkins told Los Angeles Times. “Now, 30 years after its premiere, ‘Seinfeld’ remains center stage. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Netflix to bring this beloved series to...

PopSockets reinvents mug handles

by Ashley Carman
Image: PopSockets

PopSockets, the maker of smartphone grips, is getting into the mug business. The company plans to integrate its signature pop-out tabs that stick to the backs of phones into koozies. The new product, called the PopThirst Cup Sleeve, is nasty-looking but should fit most “coffee cups, pint glasses, and various beverage cups.” As you can see below, it’s also ideal for Frappuccinos.

Image: PopSockets

The PopThirst works with both hot and cold beverages, and it comes in two sizes: one for cans and one for cups. Both sizes cost $15 and integrate a PopGrip, or the thing you probably think of as a PopSocket. They’ll go on sale on September 15th.

It’s unclear how this contraption is supposed to work. Are you supposed to...

Jeremy Renner’s app is shutting down because of trolls

by Julia Alexander

This whole thing is hilarious, fucking Jeremy Renner

2019 Comic-Con International - Marvel Studios Panel Photo by Albert L. Ortega/Getty Images

Jeremy Renner’s free app, Jeremy Renner Official, used to be a wholesome place for fans of Marvel’s Hawkeye who wanted to celebrate everything about the actor-turned-musician. But now it’s shutting down because of trolls.

The app has been around for a couple of years, but it picked up attention over the last few months. It was designed as a community hub for fans who used the Instagram-like feed to see photos of Renner, post their own stories, and hang out. Genuine Renner fans, who would sometimes refer to Renner as J Rens in comments, were suddenly greeted by a group of trolls. Things came to a head over the last week when trolls found a way to impersonate Renner and other fans, using the opportunity to post hateful comments and harass...

Watch the Bugatti Chiron smash through the mythical 300 mph barrier

by Andrew J. Hawkins

Speed, especially extremely high speeds, can get pretty abstract. I don’t know about you, but I find it difficult to wrap my head around anything faster than 150 mph, which is the speed most commercial airplanes reach when they take off. So when Bugatti announced today that its Chiron hypercar has smashed through the 300 mph barrier, my brain just found it difficult to accept that such a thing was possible.

Fortunately there’s video! Here’s Andy Wallace, Le Mans winner and Bugatti test driver, reaching a top speed of 304.773 mph (490.484 km/h) on August 2nd on the VW-owned test track at Ehra-Lessien in the German state of Lower Saxony.

To put it in more relatable terms, 300 mph is fast enough to cover the length of a football field —...

Roku’s new $179 soundbar doubles as a streaming device, works with most TVs

by Valentina Palladino
  • Roku's new Wireless Soundbar and Wireless Subwoofer. [credit: Valentina Palladino ]

Last year, Roku came out with wireless TV speakers so Roku TV users who wanted a better audio experience for their at-home movie marathons could have it. But the speaker duo only works with Roku TVs, severely limiting the number of people who could use one.

The company's latest audio endeavor is more democratic, and it offers more value. The new Roku Smart Soundbar is exactly what it sounds like—a soundbar that replaces your dull, built-in TV speakers with a higher-quality audio experience. It also has the technology of a Roku Ultra inside, so it acts as both an audio device and a streaming device that serves up 4K content and can do everything a regular Roku set-top box, stick, or TV could do.

But the best thing about the Roku Smart Soundbar is that it works with almost any television. It connects to your TV using either an HDMI ARC port or an optical audio port, both of which are commonplace on the newest TVs and TVs that are many years old. Once plugged in and set up (the setup process is just like that of a Roku streaming device), you can use the included voice remote to navigate Roku OS just like you would if you were using any other Roku device.

LG’s $4,399.99 fridge makes ‘craft ice’ for cocktail lovers

by Thomas Ricker

Sometimes, not often, but sometimes I like to end my day with a relaxing cocktail. This $4,399.99 refrigerator from LG gets me. It makes slow melting ice that’s large and round, which any highballer will tell you is superior to all other shapes for the purpose of undiluted alcohol delivery.
