Rare white Xbox One auctioned by UK charity

by Tom Warren

Microsoft built a white Xbox One just for its employees that worked to build the console, with no immediate plans to release it publicly. However, UK charity GamesAid is auctioning off one of the rare variants on eBay. The console is a commemorative special edition designed for Xbox One launch team members, and the auction includes the white console, white controller, Kinect sensor, headset, and a special launch team achievement alongside the regular day one achievement.

Bidding has already almost reached $2,000, and the auction ends this Friday. Unfortunately for bidders, GamesAid isn’t shipping the console until November 22nd so the lucky winner won’t be getting it early. Alongside the white console auction, there’s also a...

Junior college player Javonte Douglas' entire head reached above the rim on this tip dunk that looks completely fake

Spoiler alert: It's not.

The video of Douglas' incredible dunk made the rounds with sports fans online on Monday, and for good reason. We don't think we've seen anything quite like it, although this dunk from January comes close. But examining the footage reveals some interesting physics behind the feat

Douglas' jump is high to begin with, of course. But watch just as he seems to reach his peak. Two other players jump below him, inadvertently boosting him several inches higher. This results in Douglas staring down at the rim as he slams the ball through Read more...

MOGA Hero Power and Pro Power controllers released, they charge your phone as you play!

by Edgar Cervantes

moga-pro-power

PowerA has just released the all-new MOGA Hero Power and Pro Power controllers. These come with the same quality and form factor we have grown to love, but they really take it away with the controllers’ new feature. These devices actually charge your phone as you play!

One of the biggest problems about mobile gaming is battery life. Those powerful games can make your phone’s juice run out very fast. This becomes a problem when you realize you have been playing way too long and don’t have a power outlet around you.

moga-hero-power

The battery

The MOGA Hero Power and Pro Power have 1800 mAh and 2200 mAh batteries, respectively. This may be enough to completely charge your device once. At the very least you know you will not be left with little battery power when you are done dominating on your favorite mobile games.

How do the MOGA controllers charge my phone?

The controller plugs into your phone via microUSB, so there is not much science to the devices. They are simple to pair and use.

Price and availability

The MOGA Hero Power is the most affordable of the two. It features a slimmer profile and will run you for $59.99. This is a bit of a high starting price, but it will prove to be worth its price if you value battery life (most of us do).

The MOGA Pro Power is for more demanding gamers who prefer a bigger, more comfortable controller. One that will give you an advantage while playing those hard core mobile games. This bad boy costs $79.99, but does feature a larger battery.

You can get both of these from MOGA’s store, or simply wait a bit for retailers like Best Buy, Target, Sprint and Verizon to have them in stock. Such retailers should have these in “early November”, so any time now.

Are you getting a MOGA Power controller?

moga-hero-power-closed

This is a first for smartphone gaming controllers. I love the idea that these MOGA controllers double as a charger, and I will not wait one bit to get one of these. I already carry an external battery anyways. Why not take a MOGA Power controller instead?

Are you guys buying one?

Why the Hell Does Your Drink Cost So Much?

by Will Gordon

Why the Hell Does Your Drink Cost So Much?

I'm not ambitious enough to be downright thrifty, but I try to avoid abject retail stupidity. I know better than to buy paper plates when the free magazines and underwear catalogs that clog my mailbox are perfectly capable of supporting even the hammin'est of sandwiches. I drink tap water, and I'm smart enough to turn a craving for one pound of almonds into three pounds of peanuts. I get by.

Over $1.35 billion in Nazi art found hidden behind 'mountains of rotting food'

by Aaron Souppouris

Over 1,500 paintings previously thought destroyed in World War II have been found in Germany after officials followed up on a hunch. Three years ago, customs officials performed a routine check on a train from Switzerland. On the train was Hildebrandt Gurlitt, a Munich resident who reportedly had a "shifty demeanor." They could never have imagined that the reason for Gurlitt's behavior was an unimaginable "treasure trove" of important artworks.

Gurlitt "was a man who didn't exist," one official told Focus, the German publication that broke the story. He was not registered with the police, tax authorities, or social services — mandatory in Germany — and also held neither a pension nor health insurance. Continuing the investigation,...

Mike Napoli Stumbles Around The Streets Of Boston

Here we observe Mike Napoli lumbering around on the sidewalk, shirtless and without a care in the world. The resolution's shitty, but the beard is a dead giveaway. The Single Greatest Way to Make a Subway Conductor's Day

by Molly Horan
Subway-experiment
Feed-twFeed-fb

A day in the life of New York City subway conductor requires much carefully planned repetition — stop, go, make an announcement, repeat.

Part of a conductor's daily routine includes pointing at a black-and-white sign positioned at the center of every stop. Repeating this motion dozens of times each day could feel monotonous, but one group of playful jokesters decided to spice it up.

Participants in this subway experiment created signs that pointed towards the black-and-white signs, aiming to imply that the conductors agreed with whatever was written on their own signs. Read more...

'Walking Dead' Star Saves Us All From 'World War Z'

by Molly Horan

Sometimes the only way to fix a bad movie is to travel back through time and make sure it's never made.

How It Should Have Ended normally fixes film's less than satisfying conclusions, but when tackling World War Z they enlisted the help of The Walking Dead's Rick to make sure Brad Pitt wouldn't get to fight a single zombie.

Thankfully to make up for the lack of action coming from this summer's worst zombie movie the characters of better examples of undead cinema, like Shaun from Shaun of the Dead and Tallahassee from Zombieland come to see the unnecessary World War Z stars off Read more...

Android for all and the new Nexus 5

by Unknown
Just in time for Halloween, we have two new treats for Android fans. First, we're excited to unwrap our latest platform release, KitKat, which delivers a smarter, more immersive Android experience to even more people. And second, we're introducing Nexus 5—a new Nexus phone developed with LG.

The first thing you’ll notice about KitKat is we’ve made the experience much more engaging: the book you're reading, the game you're playing, or the movie you're watching—now all of these take center stage with the new immersive mode, which automatically hides everything except what you really want to see.

Bringing more Google smarts to Android
Behind the polish on the screen is the power under the hood. Take the Phone app, which for most people hasn’t really changed since the days of flip phones. Now, we’re making calling easier than ever, by helping you search across your contacts, nearby places, or even Google Apps accounts (like your company’s directory), directly from within the app. And with the new Hangouts app, all of your SMS and MMS messages are together in the same place, alongside your other conversations and video calls, so you’ll never miss a message no matter how your friends send it. This is just a small taste of KitKat—learn more on our site.

Google has always focused on helping users get immediate access to the information they need, and we want to bring this same convenience and power to users on Android. With the new Nexus 5 launcher, Google smarts are deeply integrated into the phone you carry around with you, so getting to the information you need is simple, easy and fast. Swipe once from the home screen to get Google Now literally at your fingertips. Put Google to work for you by saying “OK, Google” to launch voice search, send a text, get directions or even play a song you want to hear. And in the coming weeks, we’re enhancing Now with important new card types that bring you information about contextual topics that interest you such as updates from a favorite website or blog.

Reaching the next 1 billion users
Building a platform that makes mobile phones accessible for everyone has always been at the heart of Android. Until now, some lower-end Android phones couldn't benefit from more recent Android releases due to memory constraints. With KitKat, we've slimmed down Android’s memory footprint by doing things like removing unnecessary background services and reducing the memory consumption of features that you use all the time. We did this not only within Android but across Google services like Chrome and YouTube. RAM (or memory) is one of the most expensive parts of a phone, and now Android can run comfortably on the 512MB of RAM devices that are popular in much of the world, bringing the latest goodies in Android 4.4 within reach for the next billion smartphone users.

Introducing Nexus 5
Along with our sweet naming tradition, we also introduce a new device with each platform release to showcase the latest Android innovations. For KitKat, we partnered with LG to develop Nexus 5 -- the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made. Its design is simple and refined to showcase the 5” Full HD display. Nexus 5 also keeps you connected at blazing speeds with 4G/LTE and ultra fast wifi. The advanced new lens on Nexus 5 captures more light for brighter night and sharper action shots. And with optical image stabilization, you no longer have to worry about shaky hands and blurry pictures. A new HDR+ mode automatically snaps a rapid burst of photos and combines them to give you the best possible single shot. Learn more on our site.

Nexus 5 is available today, unlocked and without a contract, on Google Play in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Korea (and coming soon to India), starting at $349. Just in the time for the holidays, Nexus 5 will be available soon at the following retailers: Sprint, T-Mobile, Amazon, Best Buy and RadioShack.

Android 4.4, KitKat, which comes on Nexus 5, will also soon be available on Nexus 4, 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks.

How’s that for a treat?

Android 4.4 Kit Kat: 56 minutes of videos show what’s new in design and development

by Rob Jackson

Android 4.4 Kit Kat was just unleashed with the new Nexus 5 and as with any new version of Android, things are going to change a bit. From the design standpoint that could mean new guidelines, orientations, and workflows for user interaction and experience. For development that might mean access to new tools or APIs that are a bit different. All of this is extremely important for developers and can be equally interesting for consumers.

So exactly what has changed? These two videos span 40-minutes and will tell you everything you need to know!

We’ll circle back with an in-depth look ourselves, but until then, head on over to the Nexus 5 Forums where discussion is exploding!

This person on Reddit had a Nexus 5, here are a few pictures (and a ton of questions answered)

by Quentyn Kennemer

Just a quick heads up in case you aren’t a Reddit dweller — someone over in those parts has the Nexus 5. Whoever the lucky soul is, they were nice enough to snap a ton of pics for us to sink our teeth into ahead of what could be a big unveiling later today. Sources suggest Google will be launching the device (as well as announcing the latest version of Android — KitKat 4.4) at noon pacific today.

nexus 5 itw 1

While we are not interested in believing those rumors, that won’t keep us from peeling our eyes and looking out for any official news that might eek out of Mountain View today.

So what do we learn from this little escapade that Reddit user throwawaynexus5guy has gone on this morning? A good deal, actually:

  • Hangouts with SMS was pre-loaded onto the device
  • There is a complete backup solution built-in — think iCloud, except for Android.
  • In response to a question about always-on voice controls (Moto X), the leakster simply smiled :)
  • The leakster said it was as smooth as smooth can be. Android 4.3 is already pretty smooth on the aging Nexus 4, so we wouldn’t expect anything less here. Note that rumors are saying Android 4.4 has been designed to be able to work smoothly on even the weakest of hardware.
  • They said it doesn’t feel cheap “like a Samsung phone.” Their words, not ours.
  • There will be a Google Drive offer for 100GB of storage, which makes Drive the likely candidate for the built-in backup.
  • Battery life? 17 hours talk time, 8 hours web surfing, 6 hours of video watching, according to one engineer.
  • Camera is an improvement over Nexus 4, but nothing like the jump from iPhone 5 to iPhone 5S.
  • Speakers sounded really good, clear and loud.
  • It doesn’t taste like a KitKat bar.

That’s all we could gather from the questions posted so far, and there’s a chance that many more could be answered in the hours to come. Be sure to sink your teeth into all of it over at the Reddit thread here, and stay tuned to Phandroid as we’ll be on top of the news as it happens (if it happens).
