Photos: Inside a Mexican Drug Lord's Secret Escape Tunnels

by Brian Ries

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán lived the past 13 years of his life a wanted man.

Since his 2001 escape from prison in the back of a laundry truck, Guzmán, who oversaw the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, knew his capture was always imminent. So when authorities descended on a safe house rumored to be holding the drug lord last week, Guzmán was able to escape through an elaborate interconnected network of tunnels.

Days later, thanks to a wiretap being monitored by DEA agents tracking him just across the border in Arizona, Mexican agents captured him. Guzmán is now being held in the country’s highest security prison, and despite the wishes of the United States, has no plans for extradition to face trial in the U.S. anytime soon, according to The Guardian. This video could be the first footage captured inside the Supreme Court

by Russell Brandom

Like most federal courts, the Supreme Court is closed to outside recording devices, but a democracy activism group called 99rise may have broken that rule, smuggling out the first known video of the Supreme Court in session. The video shows the court arguing McCutcheon v. FEC, a campaign financing case most recently argued on October 8th, 2013. One 99rise protestor is removed from the court, but another appears to film throughout the proceedings, including partial views of several justices.

Jason Collins Jerseys Are the Hottest Fashion Statement in Sports

by Sam Laird

Jason Collins of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets made history on Sunday by becoming the first openly gay athlete to play in any of the four major American pro sports

Collins totaled just one rebound, two fouls and zero points in his four minutes of play. But his jersey — number 98, which has a particularly significant connotation — is outselling LeBron James, Kevin Durant and the rest of the NBA's biggest superstars.

Fanatics, the Internet's largest sports merchandise retailer, sold more Collins' Nets jerseys than any other NBA-related item (covering everything from Blake Griffin jerseys, to Miami Heat T-shirts, to NBA coffee mugs) on Wednesday, a company rep told Mashable on Thursday. Read more...

Google+ 4.3 Android app update brings horde of new photo features

by Quentyn Kennemer

google plus update

Google+ users can look forward to a new upgrade sitting in the Google Play Store, with Vic Gundotra telling us that this is another one that’s all about making the photo experience more awesome than it already is.

The biggest feature for some folks will be the ability to edit a photo on one device, and seamlessly continue where you left on another device — all the while maintaining the original copy. Google is calling this “non-destructive editing” for what it’s worth, but it doesn’t need a cool name to be awesome.

We’re also getting a host of brand new filters and creative tools such as built-in crop and rotate, and some of Snapseed’s best post-processed image tweaks. An “all” view will show you all of your devices from the cloud and from the device you’re viewing the photos on.

Finally, you can now jump between photos by date in the “all” view to give you an easy way to flip through the tons of photos you’ve likely backed up to the cloud.

Of course, Google is electing to roll this one out gradually so it may not hit your device right away. You’ll want to be patient as it could take a few days to reach everyone. If you’re not against checking, though, then head here and see if you can’t get in on all the new goodies.

Upcoming Google Play Services Update Will Allow Verify Apps Feature To Run Continuously In The Background

by Ryan Whitwam

shieldAndroid malware isn't as big of a concern as some mainstream media reports would have you believe, but it is enough of an issue that Google started beefing up its security a few years ago. There's the "Bouncer" server-side scanning that checks apps before they go live, and your device runs app verification as new packages are installed. Now Google is about to patch a hole in the local app scanning by making it run continuously.

The 2014 Hater's Guide To The Oscars

Oh hey, the Oscars are on Sunday night! And congratulations to America's celebrities for enduring another painfully long and arduous awards season. YOU POOR THINGS! Being shuttled from red carpet to red carpet, forced to wear nice clothes, asked the same dumb questions over and over again ("How's it feel to be nominated?") ... it's just such a grind, isn't it? Who has the energy to open ALL those goody bags?

Revenge is a dish best served at 180 mph

Almost a year ago, Jeff Gordon teamed up with Pepsi Max to prank an unsuspecting car salesman. Gordon disguised himself and took the salesman along on a test drive, only to dangerously speed around town. The salesman's terrified reactions, and subsequent reaction to discovering it was a NASCAR driver all along, earned the Pepsi spot more than 40 million views on YouTube

But not everyone was so impressed by the viral video, mainly Jalopnik reporter Travis Okulski. Okulski was among the first to point out inconsistencies in the original ad, writing it off as a staged performance by several actors Read more...

Amazing Look at the Enchanted River Where You Can't Reach the Bottom

When you first see pictures of the Enchanted River, it may look surreal, but such is the essence of the most famous tourist spot in Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur. The river is found in Barangay Cambatong, "legend has it that one firefly-lit night, fairies floated above the river while elves watched from cliffs and banks. With their wands, the fairies stirred the water, toyed with sapphire and jade, and made the tones fade and meld to achieve a shade of bluish green that now paints the riverbed," according to Inquirer.net. Boater in Baja Slapped in the Face by an Enormous Whale

by Dennis Green

Poor, misunderstood whale. He was just looking for a high-five.

A sightseer in Baja California, Mexico, went face-to-fin with a whale that decided to get up close and personal with a group of tourists. While filming a pod of the mammals, one of the enormous sea creatures swam dangerously close to the boat. The whale reached over with one of its huge fins and tapped the unsuspecting woman on the head.

There were no injuries involved, and both whale and vacationer have lived to tell the tale. Which, we can only assume, is a cautionary one: Never deny a high-five to a sea beast. Read more...

The Crazy True History of the Saddle Ridge Gold Coins

by Lance Ulanoff

The "Saddle Ridge Treasure" is what many are calling the now-historic discovery of $10 million worth of gold coins buried in decaying tin cans on the property of one very lucky — and anonymous — California couple.

These 1,427 Liberty head coins were minted between 1855 and 1894, and were actually discovered a year ago in eight canisters dotting the couple’s Northern California property. The 19th century coinage has since been authenticated by Kagin’s, a California-based agency that authenticates U.S. currency, and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS). Next week, a sampling of the coins will go on display at the American Numismatic Association National (ANA) Money Show in Atlanta. Read more...

This post first appeared on Jon Negroni's personal blog. He is also the author of "The Pixar Theory," which became a viral sensation and appeared on Mashable.

It all started with a hat.

Several months ago, one of my anonymous Pixar Theory Interns (that’s a thing on a resume) came to me with a crazy proposition: Andy’s mom is Emily, Jessie’s previous owner.

I laughed. I then agreed.

For some time, I compiled all of the evidence and found some incredible support for this theory. For one thing, take a close look at Andy’s cowboy hat he frequently wears in the movies:
