As good as smartphone cameras have gotten, they struggle to capture photos with a high degree of bokeh — where the background is kept artistically out of focus while the subject in the foreground is nice and sharp. But the Samsung Galaxy S5 has a neat feature where you can simulate the effect.
In some picture-taking modes, the GS5 lets you designate a specific subject; tap the person or object you want to be in focus and snap the pic. Once you've got it, you can open the pic in Portrait editing mode, which lets you choose if you want the background blurred or "defocused." You can change the amount of blur by simply sliding your finger across the screen, just like in many editing apps. Read more...

Yes, these *coincidences* have been circulating the internet for at least a few years, but for those stuck at work or school, here just a refresher to keep your mind working. As you can see, many of them happened nearly 100-years apart. Click here to view the first image in today's viral picture gallery. The day we lost Andrea Bargnani for the season was a very sad day, because it meant we would no longer be able to watch our favorite player who very often loses control over his own body. But lo, a potential savior arises, and he is called Jan Vesely.

Maria Komissarova, suffered a fractured vertebra and a dislocation when she crashed during a practice run for an Olympic ski cross race on Feb. 15. Two surgeries later, she still can't feel the lower half of her body.

Believe it or not, Tetford, an ex-soldier who lived in the Soldier's Home in Bennington, was on his way home to Bennington from a trip to St. Albans, Vermont. He was sitting on the bus with 14 other passengers, and they all testified to seeing him there, sleeping in his seat. However, when the bus reached its destination, Tetford was gone, despite his belongings still being on the luggage rack, along with a bus timetable that lay open on his empty seat. Tetford has never returned or been found. Continue reading for more.

While Vietnam is still reeling from the global success of Flappy Bird, many might have overlooked the fact that there are plenty more promising (and unsung) apps coming out of Vietnam. Two such apps come from a team of developers, designers, and entrepreneurs based in Ho Chi Minh city. If you asked around the nation's tech scene, most people have no idea who they are, and if you download their apps in the iOS App Store, you'd have no idea that these guys are actually from Vietnam. The apps in question are NotesPlus and INKredible.
Both of the apps allow users to write and take notes with swooshes of their fingers rather than typing things out. NotesPlus, the flagship app of the Prime Circa team, has accumulated over six million downloads since it was released over two years ago. That's for an app that costs $9.99. The team's latest app, INKredible, which is an app that showcases the latest inking technology, topped the US App Store in the productivity section and racked up over one million downloads in one month. Aside from the popularity of these apps, what originally peaked my interest was the spiffy design shown in the INKredible app. Read more...

While walking their dog, a couple from Northern California struck gold — literally.
Last spring, the anonymous couple dug up rusty tin cans with 1,427 gold coins, dating from 1847 to 1894. Nearly every coin was in mint condition and has never been circulated, according to the Professional Coin Grading Service of Santa Ana, which recently authenticated the coins.
Though the face value of the coins came out to around $27,000, rare coin experts like Don Kagin, a veteran numismatist and representative of the couple, told the AP that some of the coins could fetch nearly $1 million apiece — making it one of the largest such discoveries in U.S. history. A relaxing flight in a small prop plane took a dangerous turn for pilot Robert Weber earlier this week after a bird collided with his windshield.
Weber was flying just outside of Fort Meyers, Fla. on Saturday afternoon, when a bird hit his aircraft's windshield. The plane's front window was instantly blown out, and the bird hit Weber in the face
Weber was flying solo at a speed of 170 mph and an altitude of 1,000 feet when the bird struck. Luckily, he was able to make a mayday call, and other pilots in the area helped relay his transmissions to the tower controller. Read more...

Gotham is one of this fall's most anticipated new TV shows: the story of Jim Gordon and Gotham City, years before Batman. We obtained what appears to be a draft of the first episode, although it could be fake or draft that will change a lot before filming. If the script is for real, then Gotham has some terrific potential — but it also may have much bigger issues than Batman being 12 years old.

It's that time again, time for another round of cool and fun facts you probably didn't know about. Believe it or not, a Russian girl actually discovered her cheating boyfriend while using Google Street View. Or, that it took 18-workers spent a day counting the coins in which a Chinese man used to pay a fine. Click here to view the first image in this week's funny work pictures gallery. According to a declassified document, this saucer was supposed to reach a top speed of between Mach 3 and Mach 4, with a ceiling of over 100,000 ft. and a maximum range with allowances of about 1,000 nautical miles. A completed build would be capable of spinning through Earth's stratosphere at an average top speed of about 2,600 miles per hour. Continue reading for a video and more information.

The Voynich manuscript is basically an illustrated codex that was hand-written in an unknown writing system. It's been carbon-dated to the early 15th century (1404-1438), and may have been composed in Northern Italy during the Italian Renaissance. The manuscript is named after Wilfrid Voynich, a Polish book dealer who purchased it in 1912. No one has yet succeeded in deciphering the text, and it has become a famous case in the history of cryptography. The mystery of the meaning and origin of the manuscript has excited the popular imagination, making the manuscript the subject of novels and speculation. Leave it to the Internet to turn Finding Nemo into an R-rated comedy.
Jake Vale is the YouTube comedian behind this needlessly censored version of the Pixar classic
Vale takes famous scenes from the movie and bleeps out key words like "swim" from Dory's "Just keep swimming" motto. Our filthy brains fill in the blanks, and before we know it, "Just keep !#$%&-ing" sounds like a line that would make our grandmas blush.
This isn't the first time Vale has given a cartoon classic the censored treatment. His take on Frozen has amassed nearly 3 million views since it was posted in January. Read more...

Seth Rogen and longtime collaborator Evan Goldberg are now set to bring the classic '90s console rivalry between Sega and Nintendo to life on the big screen. According to Collider, Sony Pictures has brought the duo on to adapt author Blake Harris's Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation, an upcoming behind-the-scenes oral history of the classic gaming industry battle, for theater audiences in the near future. The Social Network producer Scott Rudin will serve as executive producer. Right now, though, there's no word on when the film will hit theaters — especially since Rogen and Goldberg are already working on so many projects. Only weeks ago they'd officially signed on to write the long-rumored P...

Samsung's latest takes on wearables, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, were among the flurry of announcements from the electronics company at Mobile World Congress this year. Representing a refinement on last year's Galaxy Gear, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are thinner, lighter, more comfortable and longer lasting than Samsung's first attempt.
Both watches offer significant improvements on the outside — they are more comfortable to wear and provide the option to change the wristband with a standard 22mm watch strap, something that the first Galaxy Gear couldn't do. It's a small change, but in addition to the variety of colors that the new watches come in, it makes the devices much more personal and customizable. Samsung removed all of the...

Alongside the new Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung is expanding its line of wearable technology to include a fitness tracker. The new Gear Fit is a downsized version of its smartwatch siblings, with a focus on tracking your heart rate and counting your steps. It looks like a Samsung version of the popular wrist-worn Fitbit trackers, but with a larger screen and quite a few more functions.

“The meaning of ‘Gravity’ isn't just what keeps your feet on the ground," says Jonás Cuarón, director.
"It’s the force that is constantly pulling you back home.”
In the film, Sandra Bullock's character, a medical engineer named Ryan Stone, wants to get back to Earth. The greatest challenge for filmmakers was conveying the sensation of being in space — to replicate zero gravity.
The movie is a hybrid of live-action, computer animation and CGI, with sets, backgrounds and even costumes rendered digitally. But amidst all the tools and effects, the creatives behind 'Gravity' wanted to present Ryan's struggle as a metaphor for life's adversity and the rebirth that helps people get to the other side — whether that's a safe trip home, or overcoming a personal loss, as Ryan does in the film. BARCELONA, Spain — At this year's Mobile World Congress, Samsung went all out. The company launched three wearable devices — Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and Gear Fit — and its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S5
The Galaxy S5, as Samsung hinted in its invitations, focuses on everyday fitness. But one rumor that didn't materialize was the 4K screen. Instead, the S5 has a 5.1-inch, full HD Super AMOLED screen, but the phone is still a monster when it comes to hardware. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon, quad-core, 2.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 16/32GB of storage, a 16-megapixel camera on the back, a 2.1-megapixel one on the front and a 2,800mAh battery Read more...

BARCELONA, Spain — Samsung threw a curveball at the Mobile World Congress here: In addition to the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, it launched a third wearable device, the Gear Fit
The Gear Fit is a wristband-style wearable, much more compact and lighter than the other two Gears. It's not just a fitness wristband like Fitbit Flex; it actually has a curved, 1.84 AMOLED touchscreen with a 432x128 pixel resolution, the first such screen to come from Samsung
Just like the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, the Gear Fit connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth and gives you notifications of incoming emails, SMS messages, alarms and third party notifications. It does not have a camera, but it does have a built-in heart rate monitor, and — just like its Gear brethren — it's water and dust resistant to IP67 specifications Read more...

Samsung is mere hours away from announcing the Galaxy S5 to complement those new Gear smart watches, but it seems a few devices are already floating around the show. The leaked images show off a phone that looks very much like the Galaxy S4 with some Note 3 influence.
The back has a loose dimple pattern, not faux-leather like the Note 3 and Pro tablets. There is also a large camera sensor, flash, and another sensor of unknown identity.
