Mr. Robot to end with fourth season

by Derek Lawrence

Mr. Robot is preparing to log off for good.

EW has confirmed that the Emmy-nominated series will conclude in 2019 with a fourth and final season. The good news is that the final installment has been extended from eight episodes to 12, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the USA drama’s conclusion.

“When I first created the world of Mr. Robot, I thought it would be a niche television series with a small, cult following. Over the past three years, it has become so much more, and I am continually humbled by the show’s recognition and by the amazing cast and crew that work tirelessly to help bring my vision to life,” creator Sam Esmail said in a statement to THR. “Since day one, I’ve been building toward one conclusion — and in breaking the next season of Mr. Robot, I have decided that conclusion is finally here. Everyone on the creative team, including the amazing people at USA and UCP, didn’t want to say goodbye, but we ultimately have too much respect for Elliot’s journey to extend past its inevitable ending. Therefore, season four will serve as the final chapter of the Mr. Robot story. To fans of the show: thank you for the past three years, and I can’t wait to share this exciting final season with you.”

Esmail’s series about Elliot Alderson, a paranoid, depressed, and genius hacker, and his anarchist alter-ego brought prestige to USA, the network previously known for their blue skies programming. The first season scored an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series and an Emmy victory for star Rami Malek. While the sophomore season wasn’t as well-received, the show came back strong for season 3, which was hailed as a “noir masterpiece” by EW critic Darren Franich.

Mr. Robot, which also stars Christian Slater and Portia Doubleday, returns to USA in 2019.

John McCain's best Saturday Night Live moments

by Kristen Baldwin

Most politicians have a love-hate relationship with Saturday Night Live. The NBC sketch comedy series has been poking fun at elected officials — with various degrees of brutality — since it premiered in 1975, and savvy presidential candidates know that studio 8H is a pivotal stop on the road to the White House. But most of those appearances are dutiful at best (see: Barack Obama in 2013) and disastrous at worst (see, or rather, don’t: Donald Trump in 2015).

RELATED: Celebs and politicians react to John McCain’s death

One notable exception: Senator John McCain. The longtime Arizona senator and two-time presidential candidate — who died on August 25 at age 81 after battling brain cancer since 2017 — took the stage at Saturday Night Live several times over the years, and each time, he looked like he was having a gosh-darned blast. Take a look back at his three most memorable SNL moments.

“To Love, Honor and Stalk” (Oct. 19, 2002)

McCain was the first sitting senator to ever host SNL, and while he played himself (and other politicians, like then-Attorney General John Ashcroft) in several sketches, he also fully committed to some sheer nonsense — with hilarious results. In this Lifetime movie parody, Amy Poehler stars as a woman whose husband, played by McCain, continually invades her personal space — whether she’s in the shower, coming in the front door, or even on the witness stand testifying against him. Simply managing to stand uncomfortably close to Poehler without breaking for the entire length of this sketch would be a victory for most hosts, but McCain drove the jokey melodrama home with his creepy grin and weaselly line-readings. (“Shall I loofah your back?”)

“McCain in One” (May 17, 2008)

Two months after winning the Republican party nomination for president, the 72-year-old Senator addressed the nation from Rockefeller Center. “I ask you, what should we be looking for in our next president? Certainly, someone who is very, very, very old.” He went on to spoof his reputation as a political maverick by boasting about reducing Arizona’s length of paved roadway to less than 900 miles, and forcing residents of the state to drive to New Mexico if they want to mail a letter. McCain delivered the speech with a winning earnestness and subtle comic timing, proving once again that he understood the value of self-parody when it came to winning the hearts and minds of the American people.

“John McCain and Sarah Palin do QVC” (Nov. 1, 2008)

Three days before the presidential election, McCain returned — alongside Tina Fey as his much-mocked running mate, Sarah Palin — for one last SNL hurrah. In a send-up of Barack Obama’s expensive 30-minute campaign ad, which ran on several broadcast and cable networks, McCain and Fey’s Palin talked up their potential administration (and some quality products) for the QVC audience. With his good-natured sales pitches for things like “McCain’s Fine Gold” (featuring a cameo from Cindy McCain) and self-deprecating humor (“I’m a true maverick — a Republican without money”), the Senator held his own with comedy veteran Fey and generated plenty of laughs himself.

North Koreans Play PC Games over LAN Networks According to Defectors

Roumen.ganeff

This is how we did it back in the day.

North Koreans love to play PC games according to defectors arriving in South Korea. It is believed that the games are smuggled in from China and distributed by USB stick. PC gamers in North Korea connect their computers to form a LAN network and have a LAN party. Some of the most popular games include Grand Theft Auto 5 and FIFA Online. To keep from getting their files confiscated, PC gamers change the file name and type to avoid detection. "I played almost all of the most famous South Korean video games in North Korea ... Every one of my friends has played foreign video games," a defector, 14, told Daily NK in Seoul recently. "All kids learn about the game and play it once it is carried on a USB stick and hits the streets." Another defector said game lovers could play in a group by connecting their computers via LAN cables. "Being able to connect a LAN cable and play games means they knew quite a lot about computers," he said. Discussion

Netflix goes full Braveheart with first trailer for historical epic, Outlaw King

by Stephen Lambrechts

Perhaps sensing that it's been far too long since we last had a large scale historical epic full of brutal, medieval combat, Netflix has come to the rescue with its first trailer for the big budget upcoming film, Outlaw King.

Directed by David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) and starring Chris Pine (who played the lead in the director's fantastic aforementioned modern western), the film follows Robert the Bruce — ally of William Wallace, eventual King of Scots, and the actual man who historians refer to as 'Braveheart' in regards to the First War of Scottish Independence.

Fans of Mel Gibson's Oscar-winning film Braveheart may recall that Robert the Bruce featured in the film, however, many have argued that his portrayal was far from accurate.

Outlaw King, which is said to have a budget of $120 million, looks appropriately massive, with huge battle scenes showcasing thousands of extras, magnificent sets, breathtaking locations and a genuine Hollywood A-lister in the lead role (Pine is also supported by Aaron Taylor-Johnson of Kick-Ass fame).

The trailer states that the film will be showing "in select theaters" and on Netflix on November 9, which seemingly positions the film as a possible Oscar contender. You can watch the first trailer for Outlaw King below.

AMC announces premiere date for Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Shannon miniseries

by Derek Lawrence

Forget Christmas, The Little Drummer Girl is coming this Thanksgiving.

Following 2016’s The Night Manager, the network has announced a premiere date for its latest miniseries based on a best-selling spy novel from John le Carré. Starring Emmy-winner Alexander Skarsgård, Oscar-nominee Michael Shannon, and Florence Pugh (The Commuter), The Little Drummer Girl will serve as a three-night event, airing in two-hour installments on Nov. 19, 20, and 21.

Here is the official description for the project from South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook (Oldboy): “Set in the late 1970s, the pulsating thriller follows Charlie (Pugh), a fiery actress and idealist whose resolve is tested after she meets the mysterious Becker (Skarsgård,) while on holiday in Greece. It quickly becomes apparent that his intentions are not what they seem, and her encounter with him entangles her in a complex plot devised by the spy mastermind Kurtz (Shannon). Charlie takes on the role of a lifetime as a double agent while remaining uncertain of her own loyalties.”

AMC’s decision to dip back into le Carré’s catalog comes after previously adapting The Night Manager, which starred Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, and Olivia Colman, who all won Golden Globes for their performances.

Veronica Mars revival starring Kristen Bell is in the works at Hulu

by James Hibberd

Brace yourselves marshmallows: A Veronica Mars revival is in the works at Hulu.

EW has learned a new season of the fan favorite mystery series is close to a deal at the streaming service — with original creator Rob Thomas and series star Kristen Bell on board.

Several elements of the deal are not yet closed but a revival has been quietly in the works for months between studio Warner Bros. and Hulu. We’re told the arrangement will allow Bell to appear on the new series despite her commitments to NBC’s The Good Place.

Aside from that, the unknowns outnumber the knowns at this point: What’s the storyline? How many episodes? Will other original series actors get invited back? When will it air? All TBD.

Veronica Mars followed a California teen sleuth and student (Bell) who moonlit as a private investigator under the tutelage of her detective father (Enrico Colantoni). The series premiered in 2004 and ran for two seasons on UPN, and then ran for another season on The CW before being canceled.

While this big Mars news in one respect represents the latest in a wave of revivals and reboots, in another way the title was one of the very first of the modern era to get brought back to life after a cancelation. In 2013, Thomas and Bell launched a campaign to raise money through Kickstarter for a feature film Veronica Mars sequel. They originally set a goal of $2 million and eventually netted an incredible $5.7 million. The movie was released in 2014.

Nazis are taking over the multiverse in The Man in the High Castle season 3 trailer

by Nick Romano

The world that inhabits The Man in the High Castle isn’t enough for the Nazis. The Reich want to conquer parallel worlds.

After a changing of the guard with Eric Overmyer stepping in as showrunner with the exit of creator Frank Spotnitz, we now have a look at The Man in the High Castle season 3 with a brand-new trailer.

Juliana Crain (Alexa Davalos) has taken refuge in the Neutral Zone as she works with Trade Minister Tagomi (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa) to unravel the mysteries of the last remaining films. She’ll then reunite with Joe Blake (Luke Kleintank), who’s sent on a diplomatic mission to San Francisco after returning from Berlin.

Also, tensions are rising between the Reich and the Empire, the Statue of Liberty crumbles, the Liberty Bell is melted down, Helen (Chelah Horsdal) takes drastic action to protect her family after the death of Thomas, and North American Reischsmarschall Lincoln Rockwell and J. Edgar Hoover are plotting against Obergruppenfuhrer John Smith (Rufus Sewell).

Smith, as executive producer David Zucker told EW, will mark a headlining piece for season 3. “The final scenes of episode 10 are really to confront the reality of how drastically the world has changed for him personally and for the world itself,” Zucker said after the season 2 finale. “What it portends will obviously be the turn we take into season 3, but that is part of what we will be exploring… What a devastating irony for John and his wife that they’ve almost raised too perfect of a Nazi, that Thomas would not consider the effort that they’re making to save his own life.”

As Juliana learns in the trailer, everything is connected to a mysterious new machine the Nazis are building “to invade and conquer parallel worlds.”

All this plays to the tune of U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love)” by way of Berlin-based singer Lxandra. It’s actually the first time the band has allowed the song to be covered and used in such a commercial capacity. Too bad there’s not a whole lot of love going on in the season 3 trailer.

The Man in the High Castle will debut season 3 on Amazon Oct. 5.

Santa Monica Studio details the epic creation of God of War’s unforgettable Stranger fight

by Denny Yeh

Hello! My name is Denny Yeh. I’m a Senior Staff Combat Designer here at Sony Santa Monica Studio. Today I’d like to take you behind the scenes to talk a little bit about the development of one of our showcase boss fights in the new God of War.

A warning to those who haven’t played the game yet: there will be SPOILERS for a certain boss fight to follow. If you’d prefer to experience it on your own first, kindly look away (and go buy our game)! Otherwise, scroll down to begin the journey.

TITLE

The God of War series has always had some spectacular opening boss fights: The Hydra, The Colossus of Rhodes, Poseidon and his water pony, among others. During these fights, the camera was usually zoomed out very far to show a sense of scale. This was because these fights all had one big thing in common: Kratos was fighting a massive foe. Get it? I said “big thing” because they’re massive. More to come, folks!

We knew we needed to do something just as epic in the new God of War, so when it was decided that the opening boss fight of the game was going to be against a smaller humanoid that was only about as tall as Kratos’ shoulder, we knew we were in for a big challenge. This is the (greatly condensed) story of how we created the boss fight with “The Stranger,” aka Baldur.

TITLE

So, how do we make fighting a guy this small feel as big as fighting the giant bosses of previous God of War games? We do the opposite of what we always did…zoom the camera in closer!

TITLE

Not that close!

TITLE

That’s better.

The close camera would help to sell the impact of each punch. These were two gods trading blows, so each hit needed to resonate with incredible force. Much of our early development time was spent on the “feel” of the fight. We wanted the player to feel like a god fighting a god, with the environment around you paying the price.

We began with our animator, Fabian Johnston, doing some exploratory animations. These helped set the tone of the entire fight. It was not long before we had them running in the game, with a whole bunch of breakable objects sprinkled about. This first prototype focused on answering a few questions:

  • How much can we push the godly reactions on both Kratos and Baldur before it starts feeling like too much?
  • How far can we go with environmental destruction? How dense can we make the breakable trees and rocks before they start interfering with gameplay? Do these add enough to the feel of the fight to be worth pursuing?
  • What size does the arena need to be to accommodate all of our other requirements?

As you can see, things were pretty rough at this early stage. However, it was already fun to control Kratos versus Baldur and to experience all the over-the-top reactions while playing. It was especially fun trying to angle the camera to knock Baldur through trees and rocks. This early prototype helped set expectations on how the fight would feel in the end.

We also discovered one big bonus to fighting a smaller character like Baldur: he was more fun to beat up. Hitting Baldur and sending him flying 50 feet was way more satisfying than hitting a giant monster’s hand. We played to this strength by making Baldur support almost all of our reaction states, such as being launched into the air or knocked back.

Around this time, our concept artist Stephen Oakley did some pre-visualization artwork of potential combat sequences for the fight, inspired by the early animations Fabian did. These helped spark even more ideas.

TITLE

By now, we had a large bucket of cool things we wanted to try out for the fight. I created a design document next, planning out the key beats of the fight… not as exciting as Fabian’s animations or Stephen’s pretty sketches, so I won’t post it. But, I did some work too! I promise.

Once we had a rough plan in place for the entire fight, we began implementing a rough skeleton for each phase, starting with the introduction when Baldur first appears at your door.

As you can see above, the animation and camera went through a lot of changes, but the basic idea of “punch Kratos over the roof” stayed the same.

We needed the intro to move you from the front of the house to the back. The skeleton served its purpose to communicate to the team exactly what was supposed to happen throughout the fight. This intro was later handed off to the cinematic team who did an excellent job re-animating it to be more…well, cinematic.

Following the intro, the fight was broken down into three core phases.

TITLE

Phase 1 is the introduction, which takes place in Kratos’ backyard. During this phase, Baldur does not attack much. Since this is the first boss fight in the game, it’s important to have a phase like this to ease the player in. This gives them a chance to use Baldur as a training dummy and enjoy the spectacle of knocking him through trees and rocks (which we already established was pretty fun from our early prototype work).

Story-wise, Baldur wants Kratos to attack him. He is purposely taking the hits in the hopes that Kratos can make him feel pain. Sometimes we’re lucky and the goals of both gameplay and story work together perfectly.

The transition between phases gave us a chance to showcase even more godly feats. These required a lot of iteration to get right, due to the continuous single shot camera we were going for. You’d be surprised how hard it is to get two characters into the right spot during gameplay without simply moving them in a camera cut.

The reason Baldur spins Kratos and throws him so high here is to mask how much we’re sliding the characters around to get in position to land on the roof. This was a recurring theme in how we designed many of our transitionary animations. Most of them have quick turns or heavy camera shaking impacts to hide the extra motion. Smoke and mirrors.

You’ll also see here that we used some of Stephen’s earlier pre-visualization artwork as reference for this tree ram sequence. This fight, like many other parts of our game, is cobbled together with ideas from people all over the studio. As a designer, my job isn’t just to come up with ideas, it’s also to filter the incredible amount of creativity coming out of every department and cherry pick the ones that will fit best.

The transition animations give us a change of scenery by moving the player to a new location. In a longer fight such as this, it’s important to keep everything escalating, including the environment. Another more subtle reason for moving the characters is that it refreshes all the breakable trees and rocks that were probably already destroyed in the first arena. This gives the player another new playground to destroy.

This is where phase 2 takes place. The early part of the phase introduces Spartan Rage, so we keep the player in rage mode longer than normal to allow them to learn the mechanics. Baldur starts being a little more aggressive in this phase, so the player has to start paying more attention to Kratos’ defensive options once the rage mode runs out.

The transition into the last phase showcases the work of our amazing breakables team. Fun fact: We originally planned to have Baldur throw a mountain at Kratos, who punches it in half. We eventually had to change it to be a bit more reasonable since Kratos is supposed to be a little rusty in this fight. If you see Kratos punching mountains in the future, however, you’ll know it was a long time coming.

TITLETITLE

We had also originally planned on having Baldur attack you during this section where you’re climbing up the chasm. He would be kicking down rocks or causing avalanches, forcing you to dodge sideways to jump between ledges. This ended up being cut due to scope. However, in retrospect, it was good that we didn’t have time to include this. The whole boss fight is so fast paced that it was nice to have a few more short quiet sections like this to break up the action.

Phase 3 is when Baldur finally starts unleashing all of his attacks. As the first boss fight in the game, we didn’t want Baldur to be too difficult. It was more important that he give the illusion of intensity, rather than actually being a huge threat (If you’re interested in a challenge, try out some of our late game boss fights against the Valkyrie, which I also designed. Sorry in advance!). Baldur’s attacks are instead designed to teach and encourage different defensive mechanics:

  • Ground shockwave – Unblockable shockwave that moves straight. Sideways dodge.
  • Punch combos – Quick punches that can be dodged with good timing, but is most easily just blocked. Block or parry.
  • Leap into air and stomp – Unblockable in a large blast radius. Roll dodge.
  • Zig zag kick – Breaks guard. Parry or dodge with good timing

In addition to Baldur’s attacks, he needed a way to defend himself if the player was too aggressive. Since Baldur reacts to all of your attacks, he is more vulnerable to being locked in an infinite combo than most bosses.

We did a lot of work to make sure he always has ways to slip out and get some of his own attacks in. Sometimes he will take an axe-hit and then counter-attack. Other times he may use the momentum of your hit to dash back and gain some space. His defensive abilities all exist to reset the playfield and force the player to engage with his offense.

Baldur was also originally supposed to be able to grab your axe and use it against you. Imagine you throw your axe at him, he takes the hit, pulls it out of his body and throws it back at you. What a jerk! This proved a bit difficult to pull off… plus we didn’t want to discourage you from throwing your axe so early in the game, so in the end this feature was… axed.

TITLE

The development of just one boss fight involves pretty much every department. From environmental artists creating the arena, to audio designers making each punch sound chunky, to producers making sure we’re not just browsing cat videos all day. I was only able to share a small snippet here, but the end product was a culmination of everyone’s efforts.

Thank you for taking the time to read all of this. I hope you enjoyed this short look behind the curtain. And I also hope you enjoy fighting Baldur! He may not be the size of a mountain, or have the ability to grow giant crab legs, but hey…he has one sick mullet.

How Ubisoft Rebuilt Athens for Odyssey

by Jon Ryan

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the 11th core game in the franchise, averaging one a year since the original’s launch back in 2007. Considering this, it’s no surprise that they’ve honed their collective skills to a fine edge when it comes to crafting digital reproductions of historic locations, and that in addition to creating one of (if not the) best-looking game in the series, Ubisoft Quebec has poured more effort and detail than ever into their rendition of ancient Greece - and nowhere in it’s massive world map is a better example of this than the city of Athens.

“It’s that booming city of antiquity,” says Odyssey’s Creative Director Jonathan Dumont during a recent interview, “That we tried to picture as a city of light, as a city of the future, for them.” As the cultural, social and political hub of the Grecian world, Athens was many things to many people. A trading port, a center for academia and philosophy, an artistic haven or hotbed of political revolution and more, the diversity of 430 BCE Athens is difficult to put together. This largely stems from the fact that while one of the most famous cities from the era, it had already existed for thousands of years, constantly changing hands between rulers and societies, and would exist for thousands more before Ubisoft’s research teams could begin exploring it.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Will be the Same Show on NBC, New Halloween Episode Confirmed [TCA 2018]

by Fred Topel

brooklyn nine-nine season 6

Brooklyn Nine-Nine may have gotten more press when it was cancelled than it had in five years of airing on the Fox network. When Fox pulled it from its Fall schedule, fans rallied to save the show. NBC stepped in. NBC Universal was already the producer of the show, so they gave it a midseason slot on their schedule. It was official: Brooklyn-Nine Nine would return for a sixth season.

NBC brought the cast and executive producer of Brooklyn Nine-Nine out for a Television Critics Association panel. Find out how the show will remain the same on a new network, what’s in store for Jake and the rest of the cew in the new season and how they plan to tackle more social issues.

New Network, Same Show

Executive producer and showrunner Dan Goor represented the creative team of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. While he’s still a ways off from beginning the new season, Goor assured fans it would be the same show on NBC.

“Yes, the mandate from NBC all along is we know this show, we love this show, that’s why we picked up this show, please keep making the same show,” Goor said. “In a lot of ways, I think it is the same type of show. I don’t want to say it’s the same show. I think it’s going to be even better this year. Definitely put that in. I’m doing The Secret. There are no substantive changes in terms of our approach to the show or anything else.”

This makes sense, but it’s still reassuring to confirm. Networks don’t usually rescue fan favorites to retool them. Scrubs stayed the same when it moved from NBC to ABC, so did The Mindy Project going from Fox to Hulu. So NBC knows what the fans like and they’re just giving it a new home.

The Halloween Heist Will Still Happen in the Spring

Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s midseason time slot means it will air long after Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, all holidays that feature prominently in episodes. Goor said they wouldn’t let the late airing stop them from their Halloween traditions.

“I think we had a very good idea for how to do the Halloween Heist and we want to continue doing it,” Goor said. “They’re some of our favorite episodes to watch and also some of the hardest to write because of the twists and turns. We have a really good idea how to do it.”

Every Halloween, the Nine-Nine compete for the title of Ultimate Detective/Genius. We can still appreciate that if they air it in February.

Jake and Amy’s Married Life

Season 5 ended with the wedding of Jake (Andy Samberg) and Amy (Melissa Fumero). Could you imagine if we never got to see their married life? The same sort of things they bicker about in the precinct will now plague their home lives.

“Mostly, I think really small detail oriented story lines about their finances, not happy with each other about what to spend on what,” Samberg said. “At the wedding ceremony, Holt says he’s excited to see their childish marriage. I think that’s going to be how it goes. They’ll maintain that same dynamic but it’ll be fun to explore it through the lens of marriage.”

Fumero had some ideas too.

“The day they combine their bank accounts is going to be a big day,” she said. “It’s going to be little stories like that that are going to be really fun to explore. What domestic life will they make new bets on and compete with?”

They Hope to Do a MeToo episode

The season 4 episode “Moo Moo” dealt with Terry (Terry Crews) getting racially profiled. Goor hopes to do another episode addressing socially relevant issues, if they can get the script right.

“Our challenge is to make them feel true to the show, be funny, but at the same time give weight to the issue and explore it in a fair way,” Goor said. “We definitely intend to continue doing that. We intend to go down the road of Rosa’s interaction with her parents and her journey coming out but there are other issues. I don’t want to say we’re going to do it unless we can figure it out, but we’re really interested in doing a MeToo storyline. It’s something we’re actively talking about in our writers room.”

Samberg vouched for the extra time such episodes take, so wanting to tackle a subject is not the final word.

“The ‘Moo Moo’ episode was something that took a really long time to be written in a way that was like yes, this is how the show wants to do this,” Samberg said. “There’s a ton of stuff like that that would be incredible to do but we’re not going to do it unless we have the right take that will do it justice.”

Gina Rodriguez is in Negotiations to Return

Gina Rodriguez guest starred on the fifth season finale of Brooklyn Nine-Nine as a potential love interest for Rosa. The show wants her back, but Rodriguez is the lead on The CW’s Jane the Virgin, so it’s complicated.

“We are in conversations with her,” Goor said. “We had a great time with her. I think she had a really good time on the show. She is the star of a television show and hugely successful in Hollywood. I am hopeful that we’ll be able to get her back in some capacity. We’re in talks is what I should say. We’re still early in the process of everything. She wants to come back and we want to have her.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine returns next year on NBC.

Marvel Trying to Convince Disney to Re-Hire James Gunn for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

by Ethan Anderton

Could Disney Rehire James Gunn

Another day, another detail regarding the uncertain status of director James Gunn and the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise that he shepherded to success. And this one at least has some semblance of hope.

There are currently “back channel conversations” happening between Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Company as the comic book movie studio tries to convince the House of Mouse to hire back James Gunn as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Deadline has word on Marvel attempting to get Disney to rehire James Gunn, and it involves some kind of compromise. As for what that compromise might be, that remains unclear, but apparently the discussion came together in the wake of Guardians of the Galaxy cast members showing their support for the filmmaker. Perhaps yesterday’s news of other studios around Hollywood courting James Gunn for jobs if he should end up really being let go from the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise also had a hand in making these discussions happen.

So could Disney rehire James Gunn? It’s certainly a tricky situation for a company whose bread and butter is family friendly content. Obviously, James Gunn’s jokes from Twitter that prompted his firing were reprehensible and inappropriate. But Disney’s knee-jerk reaction to their reemergence, despite the fact that James Gunn apologized for his provocateur antics back in 2012, remains ill-advised and sets a dangerous precedent.

Franchise star Dave Bautista has gone so far as to express a desire to ask for a release from his contract if James Gunn isn’t brought back for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But are concerns like that and a push from Marvel Studios enough to convince a giant corporation like Disney to second guess their official decision from a few weeks ago?

The fact is that James Gunn made a mistake years ago. Some of the jokes in question were a decade old. But it was at a time in his career when he was aiming for provocative shock humor. He didn’t hurt anybody, he wasn’t involved in sexual misconduct, and he certainly doesn’t partake in any of the despicable acts he inappropriately joked about all those years ago. And if the rest of Hollywood is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, then Disney should reconsider. We’ll have to wait and see what they decide. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for good news.

Future of ‘Star Trek 4’ in Doubt as Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth Depart Over Salary Negotiations

by Jacob Hall

Chris Pine Leaves Star Trek 4

Captain…we have a problem.

Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have both walked away from Star Trek 4 following failed salary negotiations. Pine was going to reprise his role as Captain James T. Kirk for the fourth time. Hemsworth was going to return via time travel as Kirk’s father, who was introduced in the 2009 reboot’s memorable prologue. What happens next, especially since the rest of the cast is still on board, remains uncertain.

The Hollywood Reporter has the story, and it offers up a dark side to a franchise built upon hope and optimism. After all, money doesn’t exist in the utopian world created by Gene Roddenberry over 50 years ago…but it sure as hell exists right here and now, and Pine and Hemsworth felt they weren’t getting enough of it to step aboard the bridge again. Or rather, they felt Paramount was not honoring an existing deal.

According to THR, the actors and their reps “insist they have deals in place and that the studios are reneging on them, forcing them to take pay cuts as they try to budget a movie that is following a mediocre performer.” That mediocre performer is Star Trek Beyond, a very good movie that massively underperformed when it opened in 2016. That film grossed $343 million worldwide, but it cost $190 million. That’s not a great ratio when other franchise films regularly cross the $1 billion mark these days.

Still, it’s hard to blame Pine and Hemsworth for sticking to their guns and walking away if they’re not getting paid what they believe they should be paid. If you want to point fingers at someone, point them at Paramount.

So what does this mean for Star Trek 4? Well, Zoe SaldanaZachary QuintoKarl UrbanSimon Pegg and John Cho are all expected to close their deals and return as Uhura, Spock, Dr. McCoy, Scotty, and Sulu, respectively. It’s possible that Kirk and his father could be recast. It’s also possible that Pine and Hemsworth return to the negotiating table and everything gets worked out. It’s also possible that they split the difference – cough up the cash for Pine since he’s the face of the rebooted franchise and recast his dearly departed dad with someone less expensive.

In any case, I’ll just come right out and say it: this flat-out sucks. I’ve been critical of the new Trek movies, but two of them have been winners, overcoming their flaws to reflect what makes this series so damn special. Pine did the impossible – he proved that someone else was capable of filling William Shatner’s boots. And Hemsworth’s entire career was built on his powerful scenes as George Kirk and seeing him return would have been a thrill. Then there’s the rest of the crew, played to perfection by a perfectly cast ensemble who give new life to beloved characters. I’d watch a Star Trek 4 starring everyone but Kirk, but would Paramount even consider making that?

It’s especially a bummer since Star Trek 4 was going to mark the first time a female director was going to steer a Trek movie. What does this mean for S.J. Clarkson? Will she stick around if things have to get retooled?

Anyway, it’s not like this spells the end of Star Trek. The recent series Star Trek: Discovery is returning for its second season next year and there’s a new TV show starring Patrick Stewart, reprising his role as Captain Picard, in the pipeline. And Pine has the Wonder Woman movies and Hemsworth has Thor and the rest of the cast are in high-demand. In the end, nothing and no one is irreparably damaged.

But still, it was a thrill to see Trek back on the big screen ever couple of years. I’ll cross my fingers and hope they can work this one out.

Move Over, Porgs: Baby Nifflers Are Coming to ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’

by Ethan Anderton

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Niffler

Star Wars: The Last Jedi introduced us to one of the most adorable creatures in pop culture with the little island-dwelling birds known as porgs. But when there’s a franchise with the title Fantastic Beasts, the battle for cutest fantasy creature isn’t an easy one, and that’s especially true with the inclusion of baby Nifflers in this fall’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Get a first look at these cute little thieves below.

Baby Nifflers in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - Baby Niffler

The Niffler was one of the more mischievous creatures from the magical suitcase of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). The little creatures are attracted to shiny objects, which makes them desirable for tracking down treasure. But it also makes them rather troublesome, as we saw in the first film when one of them ended up inside of jewelry shop, bringing some unwanted attention to the magizoologist.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald - Baby Niffler

As you can see in the concept art and first look image above, the baby Nifflers are super adorable, and they’re just as attracted to shiny objects as the full grown creatures, Plus, we get to see that there are varieties of Nifflers when it comes to the color of their fur. We’ll likely see several more baby Nifflers in the movie since Entertainment Weekly says Newt has to deal with a litter of newborns that are “wreaking havoc.”

The baby Nifflers aren’t the only new creatures on the scene either. Other magical animals we’ll discover include a Kelpie, described as some kind of underwater creatures that hails from Scotland which can be mounted and ridden. There’s also a Leucrotta, a moose-like creature with a massive mouth, and an Augurey, an owl-like creature whose cry is believed to foretell death. Perhaps that will make some kind of ominous prediction about one of our wizarding world characters.

Directed by David Yates from a script by J.K. Rowling, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald also stars Jude Law, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Johnny Depp, Ezra Miller, Callum TurnerClaudia KimWilliam NadylamKevin GuthrieCarmen Ejogo, and Poppy Corby-Tuech.

Here is the synopsis to Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne).  But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead.  Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald opens November 16, 2018.

Tesla Troll and Short Doxed as Heavily Invested in Oil Industry

"Montana Skeptic," a Seeking Alpha contributor who some consider to be one of Tesla's biggest anonymous trolls and shorts, was recently doxed: his real identity is Lawrence Fossi, an investment manager who happens to be heavily invested in the oil industry. The critic has opted to stop writing about Tesla after CEO Elon Musk contacted his place of work and threatened to sue. Fossi has often pushed narratives about Tesla that have been proven to be completely wrong. For example, he predicted that Tesla would deliver fewer than 18,000 Model X's in 2016. Not only was he wrong by about 40%, but he claimed that the limitation would be demand when it was in fact production, which was limited during the first half of the year. Discussion

FCC Mistakes Angry Americans for Hacker DDoS Attack

The FCC has maintained a theory that the agency's Electronic Comment Filing System (ECFS) was the victim of a hacker's DDoS attack during the Net Neutrality debate. Angry Americans seeking to have their voices heard on the issue of Net Neutrality, flooded the FCC's ECFS website with requests to comment on the volatile subject, but couldn't get through. Now we learn that it wasn't a DDoS attack at all. The government's computer system simply couldn't handle the amount of Americans seeking to be heard and crumbled. You can read Ajit Pai's statement here and Jessica Rosenworcel's statement here. Because it wasn't a hack, it seems that the comment-filing system, though recently revamped, needs yet another fresh coat of paint to handle the kind of volume it saw during the net neutrality repeal. Plans for that are underway, Pai wrote. The GAO investigation regarding fraud in the comment system will no doubt affect those plans. Discussion

DOOM Eternal: release date, news, trailers and Quakecon information

by Jordan King

Additional reporting by Andrew Hayward

If you thought the 2016 Doom reboot was over-the-top, then you haven’t seen anything yet. Id Software is back in action with Doom Eternal, which takes the modernized rendition of the first-person shooter classic and revs it up to an incredible degree—from more grotesque demons to demolish to even more deliciously violent takedowns and plenty more.

Trusted Reviews has compiled everything you need to know about DOOM: Eternal after the closer look we got at Quakecon, including all the latest news, release date, gameplay trailers and more!

DOOM Eternal – what is it?

Doom Eternal is the fifth main game in the legendary shooter series, but more notably, it’s the follow-up to the aforementioned modern revival. It takes that impressively well-honed approach, with its speedy and satisfyingly swift action, and seemingly amplifies it to a whole new level as the Doom Slayer hunts his ample prey through fiery, demon-infested locations on Earth.

The Doom Slayer was already suitably badass the last time around, but now he has some new tools and abilities to help make even quicker work of his prey. For example, he has a blade attached to his left arm that can be used to slash foes in half and rip out their organs (and stuff them into different openings, no less). He also has a grappling hook that uses enemies as an anchor, letting you swing from point to point by finding a new foe to penetrate. Along with some well-placed poles to swing off of, it adds more verticality to the experience.

Eternal also brings back some classic enemies from the pixel-packed originals, all reimagined for the modern era, and they’re gradually destructible: each will visibly deteriorate as you blast, pummel, and detonate them. And there are fresh weapons, as well, including some sort of phenomenal rune-engraved laser sword that appears at the tail end of the QuakeCon demo. There’s also a “Super Shotgun Meat Hook mod,” which we can’t wait to see in action.

The campaign action is mostly set across fiery hellscapes, but the QuakeCon demo also showed off some fabulous-looking new terrain, such as intricately-designed fantasy castle locales. The new idTech 7 engine allows for vastly more detail and geometry than before, which makes for vaster and more involved environments.

It’s a direct sequel to the 2016 reboot, something that is immediately obvious from the DOOM Marine himself and the denizens of demons hungry for bullets in the debut trailer. Mick Gordon has also returned to compose the soundtrack, ensuring we’ll have plenty of metal brilliance to rock out to while vanquishing evil.

DOOM Eternal release date – when is it coming out?

At the time or writing, Bethesda has confirmed that DOOM: Eternal is planned for a 2019 release.

Currently, launch is planned for PS4, Xbox One and PC in addition to the Nintendo Switch, with that port being handled by Panic Button, the company responsible for the Switch ports of both Wolfenstein II and the rebooted Doom.

DOOM Eternal Trailer – how does it look?

Want to see the the official E3 teaser? Right this way!

DOOM Eternal Gameplay – How does it play?

No in-game footage has been shown thus far for DOOM: Eternal, with a more substantial debut to take place at QuakeCon in August. Considering the relatively small gap between Eternal and its predecessor, we imagine many of the same elements will return with a bunch of welcome refinements.

We expect the return of fast, frantic gunplay alongside glory kills and classic weapons ripe for experimentation. Time will tell whether the multiplayer mode will return, which received a lukewarm reception compared to the beloved campaign. One thing we’d love to see is the arcade mode implemented as a post-launched update available right away in DOOM: Eternal.

Doom Eternal multiplayer: What are invaders?

Here’s an interesting new twist for Doom Eternal: online players will now have the ability to take the role of demons and “invade” another player’s campaign. It’s a strictly optional feature, in case you prefer to slay solo, but that should add a fun new wrinkle to the Doom experience. It will also finally provide an opportunity to experience the game from the other side of the shotgun in a campaign scenario.

Doom Eternal will also offer a more traditional take on competitive multiplayer, although it’s not yet clear what that will look like. The last Doom’s multiplayer, developed with external partner Certain Affinity, was widely seen as weak compared to the strong solo campaign.

However, id Software tells Polygon that Doom Eternal will feature something entirely new, and that they’re developing the multiplayer component themselves. “It’s very Doom,” said creative director Hugo Martin. “It’s very good.”

We’ll surely find out more about the multiplayer experience and other elements of the game as Doom Eternal’s expected 2019 release nears.
