Oh snap

Dear Mongrel Media,

You owe me an apology. Sorry to just come right out and say it, but I really don’t know how else to proceed. You know what you’ve done. Isn’t it time to come clean and make amends?

Look, I get why you did it. Here you were, burdened with the impossible task of getting people to buy or rent a movie that basically no one liked. And by “basically no one,” I don’t just mean fellow critics like myself, who were unkind in their reviews, or audiences, who mostly just stayed away. I’m also talking about the movie’s own director, who took his name off the thing before it was even finished. That’s a lot of negativity for a distributor to work around. I sympathize. I really do.

Not that you don’t know, but I’m referring, of course ...

Erica Schenk appears on the August issue of Women’s Running.

This article originally appeared on MIMI.
By Jessie Militare

Fitness magazines tend to perpetuate a thin, toned ideal on their covers and on their pages. But this minority body type doesn’t represent the thousands of women who read these publications. Women’s Running magazine is working to change that standard. The publication put plus-size model, Erica Jean Schenk, on its August cover, and the 18 year old looks great.

Instagram Photo

Schenk has been a runner for 10 years, and proves that there is more than one type of “fit” body. The teen also enjoys fast-paced swimming, volleyball, and barefoot beach runs. She told People that she wasn’t originally assigned to the cover, but rather an in-book feature about athletic brands that are broadening their size range. The cover was a welcome surprise.

Instagram Photo

“Honestly, I was astonished,” Schenk told People. “My family is overwhelmingly proud.”

People are praising the cover on Twitter and Instagram, and are happy to see a model that looks more like the average woman in such a visible place.

I almost cried when I opened my mailbox and seen a thick girl like me ON THE COVER. Thank you @WomensRunning 👏💞 pic.twitter.com/nM6LuHmKeu

— Juanita J. (@shookie326) July 15, 2015

“This cover proves anyone can run,” Schenk says. “Don’t be afraid to be curvy and do what you love. You are not alone.”

I hope other pubs follow suit.

News in Brief: Woman Quickly Cycles Through Non-Threatening Voice Inflections Before Expressing Concern

HOBOKEN, NJ—In a concerted effort to eliminate any possibility of perceived resentment or antagonism, local account manager Jessica Koerper reportedly cycled through a variety of non-threatening voice inflections in her head Friday before vocalizing a concern to her manager. “‘Why don’t we move this to next week?’—shoot, that’s too aggressive. ‘If we move this to next week, would that be okay?’—I guess that’s better,” Koerper reportedly thought to herself as she ran through more than a dozen combinations of intonations, vocal pitches, syntactical changes, and patterns of stressed words in order to avoid, as much as possible, giving her boss the impression that she’s actively working to undermine his authority and role within the company. “Maybe I’ll start off with the word ‘Hi,’ but that’s always tricky, because if it’s too casual he might think I don’t take his ...

How to Deal With People Who Undermine Everything You Do

by Kristin Wong
IKEA Monkey

I know someone who does this to me and it is maddening.

Years ago, a friend introduced me to someone who asked what I did for a living. “I work on an online video series,” I said. It was hard work, it required lots of planning, researching and interviewing, and it was how I paid the bills. My friend chimed in, “She’s a vlogger,” then giggled. I didn’t quite understand what she meant, but I felt diminished.

The top 10 most beautiful movies of all time

Oh wow. They included one of my favorite films of all time, The Conformist.

Ok, so narrowing down all of the beautifully shot movies in the world to a list of just 10 is absurd, but to their credit, the gang at Cinefix manage to mention more than 50 or 60 movies in their top 10 review. If you've only seen even a few of these, you're doing well.

Manhattan, Citizen Kane, The Fall, 2001, Hero, The Tree of Life. Damn.

Coming Distractions: Here’s a trailer for The Curse Of Downers Grove, written by Bret Easton Ellis

by Sam Barsanti
IKEA Monkey

I work in Downers Grove

The most shocking thing in this trailer for The Curse Of Downers Grove isn’t the dead teenagers, or the fact that its story is “based on true events,” or even the idea of someone making a movie about a small-ish suburb of Chicago. No, the most shocking part is when the trailer flashes the words “From Bret Easton Ellis, author of the novel American Psycho.” We’re not saying that The Curse Of Downers Grove doesn’t look like something Bret Easton Ellis would write, but we would assume that a movie written by him would be a bigger deal than this appears to be. He’s a famous writer, and this is just some indie horror movie that features Tom Arnold. Tom Arnold!

As for the actual content of this Curse Of Downers Grove trailer, it revolves around a high school in which a member of the senior ...

Voicemail Shows Sandra Bland Was 'Angry,' Not Suicidal, Family Says

by aaroncynic
IKEA Monkey

This whole situation is tragic, but one thing that continues to bother me is that people keep insisting she "wasn't suicidal". Mental illness is so complex, it is possible for a person to exhibit no outward signs of suicidal tendencies, to be planning their future, to seem involved and "OK" and then commit suicide. People can be very good at hiding it.

Do i think that's the case with this? No, but maybe. But probably, most likely not? It screams too much of a cover up. But I wish the whole "she didn't seem suicidal!" narrative would be questioned because that really does a disservice to understanding why people commit suicide. I admit to having a deeply personal perspective on this though. My brother committed suicide seemingly out of the blue. He never seemed "suicidal". Ever.

Voicemail Shows Sandra Bland Was 'Angry,' Not Suicidal, Family Says A newly-released voicemail from Sandra Bland shows a woman who was angry and baffled by her incarceration, but not suicidal, family and friends are telling authorities. [ more › ]

What's the Difference Between Caramel, Toffee, and Butterscotch?

by Rebecca OConnell
IKEA Monkey

Attn: David

When looking for an ice cream topping, dessert lovers might notice that caramel and butterscotch syrups look and taste pretty similar.

The confectionaries are both made with melted sugar, but they use different ingredients. Caramel is a mix of white granulated sugar, heavy whipping cream, butter, and a dash of vanilla. Butterscotch, on the other hand, is made with brown sugar instead.

Butterscotch originally was just a hard candy. The suffix "scotch" is not related to alcohol, but to the method of cutting. Hard candy is difficult to break into clean pieces, so the candy is "scotched" (scored) to make it easy to cut later.

As for toffee, it has the same ingredients as butterscotch but is cooked longer. Toffee is cooked until the hard-crack stage, meaning there is a 99 percent sugar concentration.

Is It Clean?: Alcohol

by cindyhatcher
IKEA Monkey

I love Cooking Light but they have started this focus on "clean eating", and its really turning me off. The entire concept of certain foods being "clean" (as opposed to what, dirty?) is really a mindfuck to me. Heart-healthy, sure. Organic/non-GMO/gluten free, fine. Even artisinal sounds more reasonable than "clean".

Credit: fStop Images - Larry Washburn/Getty

Credit: fStop Images – Larry Washburn/Getty

Look: We want badly to tell you that yes, alcohol is clean. But it isn’t. It isn’t exactly dirty (though maybe it is a little dirty when we’re talking frozen daiquiris on Bourbon Street), but it can’t be considered clean. (Go here to catch up on what we mean by clean eating.)

One of our core principles to clean eating is to make sure you’re drinking enough water and are properly hydrated, and alcohol sort of defeats this. Plus, don’t forget the empty calories. That doesn’t mean alcohol can’t be a part of an overall clean approach to eating, however. It just means it needs to be enjoyed in moderation and that you can make smarter choices in the spectrum: Wine would be on the cleaner end of the clean eating scale versus something like, say, beer or a cocktail. You also know pretty much what you’re getting in a glass of wine from a calorie and ingredient standpoint compared to a beer, which can range all over the place calorically and isn’t required to disclose its calorie count on the label.

So, no, alcohol isn’t clean. But you can make smarter, smaller pours and still enjoy it as part of a healthful lifestyle. Cheers to that!

A dude I work with speaks almost 100% with vocal fry. It drives me absolutely INSANE. It sounds terrible. Its not his natural voice, he does have the ability to speka normally, but he fries his voice so much it sounds so bad.

“Vocal fry” among women has been a hot topic the past few years, even getting its own feature film mention with the movie In a World . It’s an especially hot topic in the public radio world, as a voice is all that listeners know their hosts by. There’s no face to judge, no reporter to tell she should change her hairstyle. It’s just what’s coming out of the speakers, and when listeners don’t like it, they don’t like it, okay?!

3 Tips for Eating Clean While Eating Out

by Mallory Brasseale
IKEA Monkey

They're starting to sound like a cult

Mushroom and Spinach Omelet

You can’t go wrong with a veggie-packed omelet. If you’re not sure about the quality of cheese, order it without or request a cleaner, flavorful option in which a little goes a long way: Goat cheese or Gruyere for example.

When you’re following a clean eating diet, eating out at restaurants can be challenging, to say the least. Whether you’re traveling or meeting friends for dinner, here are three tips for eating cleaner while dining out.

1. Study the menu ahead of time. Before I step foot in the door of a restaurant, I always try to check out the menu online ahead of time. If the full menu isn’t posted on their website, I check the restaurant’s Facebook or Twitter accounts for daily specials. Have a plan ahead of time, especially if you have special orders or questions about the menu. Avoid pasta, and look for dishes that are inherently wholesome, such as grilled seafood, veggie-packed omelets (sans cheese) or other egg-based dishes, and main dish salads. Here’s a guide on ordering clean at various types of restaurants, from fast casual to fast food burger joints. If you can’t find a clean entrée on the menu, order a couple sides (roasted veggies, side salad with vinaigrette, fresh fruit, maybe a whole grain?) and a cleaner appetizer, tapas style.

2. Choose the right restaurant. Seek out locally-owned restaurants that focus on fresh, local ingredients whenever possible. Ask the staff questions about ingredients used and what exactly is in a dish. Or, try one of these top 10 chain restaurants for clean eating.

3. Don’t stress. Aim to eat cleaner while dining out. Not every meal will be perfectly clean everyday, and that is OK. Do your best and make your next meal as clean as possible.

Ultimate cringe

Sending the implicit message that minor league baseball is no place for grown men sadly trading on teenage glories, Pennsylvania’s State College Spikes made national news Monday when it issued a statement apologizing for an appearance by Corey Feldman at Sunday night’s game. Feldman, whose presence normally requires a $250 fee up front or being a girl in your underwear, had graciously waived those prerequisites in order to sing with his band of “Corey’s Angels” after the Spikes left the field. And it had all the makings of a classic American summer night: the crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd, and The World’s First All-Blonde Lingerie Model Female Band, standing in the vicinity of Corey Feldman while he performed. And perform he did, cavorting with his scantily clad women and delivering Michael Jackson-inspired dance moves, and generally proving that he was, indeed, Corey ...

The 12 Strangest Celebrity Cameos in ‘Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!’

by Pilot Viruet
IKEA Monkey

Wait, WHAT?

sharknado3_0

Last night, Syfy premiered the third entry in the Sharknado franchise (yep, it’s now a bona fide franchise), aptly titled Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! It was patriotic and bloody, about 90 mildly fun minutes that included shark-related weather phenomena, gruesome deaths (and births), chainsaws (obviously), and its most implausible ending yet — which is certainly saying something — complete with audience #hashtag participation to set up the fourth movie. The flying sharks were the stars of the night, but a close second were all the celebrities giddily shilling themselves for a paycheck. Here are the 12 weirdest celebrity roles and cameos in Sharknado 3

vlcsnap-2015-07-23-09h32m43s200Chris Jericho (Ride Operator

Lest you think I’d be blinded by my love for all WWE superstars, and especially Chris Jericho, let me be the first to say that he’s actually a pretty bad actor in this movie (and he’s usually not awful), with an barely-there stint as a ride operator who gets a gross death because he just can’t remember a lost phone.

vlcsnap-2015-07-23-09h23m31s241Lou Ferrigno (Agent Banner)

In a delightfully cheesy movie full of delightfully cheesy lines, Ferrigno, best known for playing The Hulk, saying, “Don’t make me angry” is positively groan-worthy.

SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO! -- Pictured: (l-r) Mark Cuban as President of the United States, Ian Ziering as Fin Shepard -- (Photo by: The Global Asylum/Syfy)

Mark Cuban (President of the United States)

Mark Cuban is actually kinda perfect for Sharknado 3 — this is a man who makes each of his lines a straight-faced declaration (“This is for America, baby!”), while donning multiple guns, watching a shark literally blow up above him, or dramatically diving out of a window. If there was a spinoff of just Cuban and Ziering doing tame B-movie stunts, I’d watch it.

vlcsnap-2015-07-23-09h27m10s191Ann Coulter (Vice President of the United States)

OK, so she’s not exactly Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Veep, but Coulter is as acceptable an actress as you need in a movie like this. Her VP is also as expected — “I feel for the sharks, but they’re wrecking our schools, our hospitals, our roads…” — and Coulter is game for all the silliness, such as using the George Washington presidential portrait as a surfboard to surf down a staircase full of sharks alongside Mark McGrath.

vlcsnap-2015-07-23-09h36m40s4
Alexis Ohanian (Himself)

Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, plays himself because even more than sharks eating people, Sharknado 3 is about the Internet eating itself.

Jerry Springer (Manic Tourist)

My only gripe with Springer’s (oddly) much-hyped cameo is that it wasn’t long enough, though he certainly had one of the funniest deaths.

vlcsnap-2015-07-23-09h28m54s211Kathie Lee and Hoda (themselves)

The women spend their first appearance on screen drinking wine, which is perhaps the only realistic thing in the entire movie. Later on, they smash those bottles to take on some sharks.

Penn and Teller (NASA Lieutenant Colonel Stylo and Major Caissier)

Why include two of the world’s most famous illusionists in a quick, unnecessary scene in which they are patrons at a diner chatting with Fin’s father? Well, why not?

SHARKNADO 3: OH HELL NO! -- Pictured: David Hasselhoff as Gilbert Shepard -- (Photo by: Raymond Liu/Syfy)

David Hasselhoff (Gil)

Hasselhoff has a relatively significant role in Sharknado 3 as Fin’s father Gil, who was once in the NASA astronaut program and helps Fin lead a mission into space to, uh, destroy the sharks? Listen, the specifics in Sharknado 3 aren’t that important, but what is important is that Gil becomes yet another self-sacrificing character.

george_rr_martin_sharknado_3_stillGeorge R. R. Martin (Himself)

Sure, his very quick appearance as a theatergoer is silly, but he gets what’s coming to him after all the deaths he’s responsible for writing in Game of Thrones.

Sonic's Chili Cheese Coney comes topped with chili and shredded cheddar cheese, while the All-American Dog is topped with ketchup, yellow mustard, relish, and chopped onions. Both hot dogs are normally about $2.
