The book that made you afraid of small dogs is headed to the big screen now that CBS Films has purchased a Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark pitch from Saw scribes Patrick Helton and Marcus Dunstan. The film will follow a group of kids who “stand up to their fears to save their town when nightmares come to life." O…kay. Unfortunately there's no sign that original illustrator Stephen Gammell is involved, which would be the entire point of a Scary Stories movie. Should we start a petition?

Ian Watkins is the scum of the earth. I'm not sure there are people on this earth who are worse. Hopefully there is a special place in hell for this guy. The former lead singer of Lostprophets has pleaded guilty to 13 different sex crimes including two counts of attempting to rape an 11 month old baby. Yeah. He is a sick f**k and he is lucky that I am not the one who caught him trying to do that. He had originally been charged with 24 different crimes and his trial was set to begin this week before his plea deal which did not include his two female co-defendants. Watkins is set to be sentenced the week before Christmas.
I’d like to shake the hand of the person who invented the concept of Cyber Monday. An orphaned Northern Fur Seal left in a box outside the Alaska Department of Fish and Game offices is on track despite a rough start in life.

The Stranding Team at Alaska SeaLife Center took in the newborn Seal, who weighed only 9.5 pounds, on July 24. A note on the box said that the pup’s mother had died giving birth. The pup, named Chiidax by the staff, was underweight and dehydrated.
Today, Chiidax weighs 18 pounds and weaned at four months old, which is right on target for a wild Fur Seal. Chiidax now enjoys whole fish rather than formula.
Now that Chiidax is weaned, he’s also molted his dark pup coat and sports the cream and brown coat of a young juvenile.
Northern Fur Seals inhabit the Pacific Coast of the United States, the Bering Sea, and the coast of the Russian Far East. As a male Fur Seal, Chiidax is destined to weigh about 590 pounds (270 kg) when full grown. Male Fur Seals weigh four to five times as much as females. Northern Fur Seals are listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Jake Gyllenhaal, who was in awards-campaign mode when he showed up for a lunch on Friday to promote his Oscar hopeful Prisoners, brought a souvenir from the shooting of his most recent film, Nightcrawler: a heavily bandaged left hand. Gyllenhaal says that in one scene, he punched a mirror so hard, it shattered and left him in urgent need of stitches. What a trouper! "If you're committed, sometimes, accidents happen," he told Vulture. "But we got it on film, so it'll be in the movie, I hope!" His character, previously described as an underground crime journalist, is someone who "films accidents and crime scenes for the local news." "I wouldn't really call him a journalist," Gyllenhaal said. "I would actually consider him a cinematographer. He's a total observer, and a visual artist."
We also asked Gyllenhaal what's up with his David O. A tiny Kirk’s Dik-dik antelope, which was hand-reared by keepers after being rejected by her mom, has stepped in to help her much-smaller sibling. Eight-month-old Aluna is now playing the big sister to new arrival Neo at Chester Zoo in England, and the two have struck up a charming bond.
Keeper Claire McPhee says, "Dik-dik mothers do not always take to their young, and unfortunately Neo and his mum didn’t quite hit it off. But happily, his not-so-big sister Aluna - who herself didn’t manage to bond with her mum - is drawing on her own experiences and is being a real calming influence on him. They spend lots and lots of time in each other’s company and she’s really helping with his development in his crucial early days.
“Little Neo is only 20 centimeters (8 inches) tall and a little bit shy, nervous and jumpy around other Dik-diks. But Aluna is dishing out lots of special care and attention and it’s helping him integrate into the wider family group. She’s helping him to settle in nicely and it’s lovely to see.”

The Kirk's Dik-dik is native to Kenya, Tanzania and Namibia and is named after the sound it makes when fleeing danger. They can live for up to 10 years and reach a maximum size of about 16 inches (40 cm) tall, making them one of the smallest antelope species in the world.
The tiny new arrival, born October 10, now weighs little more than a bag of sugar at 2.8 pounds (1.3 kg). Keepers chose the name Neo as it means ‘gift’ in Swahili. Aluna, born in February, was previously featured on ZooBorns. Aluna means 'come here' in Swahili.

A litter of six Chacoan Peccary pups was born at San Francisco Zoo in early November. They are busy playing and exploring their outdoor habitat, in the company of the zoo's adult herd. The little ones love to leap and run in circles, an adorable behavior sometimes referred to as 'frisky hopping'.
Chacoan Peccaries are an endangered species of New World pig, found in the dry shrub habitats of Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina. They are threatened by loss of habitat and illegal hunting. Social animals, they live together in territorial groups, often extended families. They eat plants, including cacti, which they roll along the ground with their snouts to remove the thorns.

Matthew McConaughey is GQ‘s “Leading Man of the Year” in its “Men of the Year” issue, which is just so great for Matthew McConaughey. It would, of course, be enough for him to be GQ‘s “Leading Man of the Year,” but his interview shows that there are even greater things to come. After sharing a story about accepting a wrestling challenge in an African village, he gives us a peek:
McConaughey lowers his voice back into his Tarzan accent. “It is not about whether you win or lose,” he says. “It is whether you accept the challenge.”
McConaughey pauses to let the power of the words resonate. Congratulations to Ellen and Otto, the latest Pygmy Hippo parents at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland! The calf, a healthy female, was born on October 27.
The calf has been named Adana by her keepers, which is a West African name meaning ‘her father’s daughter’. For now, the little one is keeping warm indoors with mom. Although she is still a little shy, Adana has just started to venture into the indoor pool.
Lorna Hughes, team leader for primates and hoofstock at Edinburgh Zoo, says, “A very maternal animal, Ellen has proven herself to be a fantastic parent to her offspring. Baby Adana is just over a week old now and is feeding well from mum. Growing in confidence every day, Adana has ventured into the water under the watchful eye of mum. Even though Pygmy Hippos are incredible swimmers, it’s a little known fact the Hippo calves need to be taught how to swim by their mothers."
Native to West Africa, Pygmy Hippos are an Endangered species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, likely with fewer than 3,000 left in the wild. Populations are declining rapidly due to habitat destruction caused by logging, farming and human settlement. Pressures from wars in the Hippos’ native range are another dire threat. Sadly, Pygmy Hippos are also increasingly being threatened by bushmeat hunters. Edinburgh Zoo has successfully been part of the European Breeding Program for this species for many years, with 18 offspring successfully reared at the zoo since the 1970s.
Ellen was born at Edinburgh Zoo in 2005, named after yachtswoman Ellen McArthur, and this is her third female youngster born to dad Otto. Leishan was born in 2009 and Eve on New Year’s Eve in 2011.
Visitors can see baby Adana in the indoor Hippo house with Ellen, while Otto and big sister Eve are in their outdoor enclosure during the day.
Some enterprising human has come along and put the final nail in the coffin that holds the quivering body of the written language as a relevant medium. As you can yourself discern, this emoji biography of Miley Cyrus possesses a remarkably coherent story line — could the written word do it justice? Probably not.
This Indiegogo fund said they wanted to create a product to “make women and girls feel safer” but has created more controversy than it ever expected – everything from the fact that we should be focusing on stopping rapists and not trying to create some kind of Lululemon chastity belt to the issue that the video focus on a very specific demo and not all women and girls. AR Wear did post an update saying that they planned on creating a plus size line, as well.
