by Andrew Bleiman

Keepers at Howletts Wild Animal Park are celebrating the birth of an adorable baby Elephant.  Born just over a week ago, the calf and her mother Tammi are both reported to be doing well.

Damian Aspinall, Chairman of The Aspinall Foundation, the conservation charity that works closely with Howletts and Port Lympne Wild Animal Parks, tweeted pictures of the female calf, just hours after birth and said: ‘Had our 22ndele birth at Howletts today. Prob a little girl. Only 33 born in UK total, so very happy.’

The calf brings the herd number at the wild animal park, near Canterbury to 13 and cements the park’s reputation for being one of the most successful breeders of African Elephants in Europe .

Damian also tweeted: ‘Amazing to think 2 out of 3 eles born in UK are born here at Howletts.’

Howletts cares for the largest herd of African Elephants in the UK including bull Elephant Jums who stands at over 11 feet tall and weighs around 6100kg, a stark contrast to the tiny new arrival. Father to 18 offspring, Jums is now 37 years old.

Natalie Boyd, Head of Elephant Section said:  ‘We are delighted to welcome our newest member of the herd after a 21 ½ month wait, and are especially pleased with the range of natural behaviours shown by our elephants, who were all present.  Many other females, including all Tammi’s extended family assisted in getting the calf to her feet within minutes and encouraging her to suckle.  This is Tammi’s fifth baby and she is, once again, proving to be an excellent mother, and this time is assisted by Jara, Uzuri and even little four year old Manzi.’

Iran's president tweets a photo of the most depressing World Cup viewing party ever

by By The Week Staff

No face paint, no pizza, no fun?

Yesterday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani tweeted a picture of what is possibly the most solemn World Cup viewing party ever. He is seen sitting alone and staring at what appears to be a 32-inch television showing the Iran and Nigeria game — and he doesn't look all that into it. The snack selection looks just as dire (nuts, juice, and an empty plate?). The only sign of soccer spirit is the Iranian jersey he's wearing.

Since the game ended in a 0-0 tie, his sedate expression is totally warranted. Iran's next game is this weekend — hopefully his friends...

A Gay-Marriage Father of the Bride Is in the Works

by Jesse David Fox

NikkiFinke.com reports a sequel to Father of the Bride is in the works (currently not working under the title Fath3r of th3 Brid3), with the original remake's director Charles Shyer attached to write and direct. (Nancy Meyers, who co-wrote the first two films, passed on the project.) Steve Martin will return as the titular bride-father. The movie will focus on Matty, played by Kieran Culkin in the '90s films, who is now 29 and engaged to be married to a man (a Navy SEAL's son). Martin's character isn't sure about this whole gay-marriage thing, so Diane Keaton's character kicks him out of the house. Shenanigans ensue. Live birds will likely be involved.

Update: Steve Martin took to Twitter to say that he didn't even know another sequel was in the works, let alone sign on to star in it.

Starbucks to team up with Arizona State to offer employees free degrees

by By Catherine Garcia

Starbucks employees will soon have another perk beyond all the coffee you can drink: On Monday, the company is announcing that it will provide free online education through Arizona State for most of its workers. Baristas don't have to stay with the company to receive the benefit, a first for a major U.S. corporation.

The program is open to every Starbucks employee in the United States, The New York Times reports, as long as they work at least 20 hours a week and are able to gain admission to Arizona State through good grades and test scores. If an employee has two years or more of college credit...

The Mormon church is considering excommunicating two would-be reformers

by By The Week Staff

This week, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints informed two members that they are being called before Mormon church tribunals that will consider whether to excommunicate them for "apostasy." This crackdown — on Kate Kelly, a Mormon lawyer pushing for ordaining women into the all-male priesthood, and John Dehlin, a psychology grad student who has started several online forums for voicing doubts and questions about Mormon orthodoxy, particularly its stricture on gay members — is the most prominent action against self-styled reformers since six intellectuals were pushed out...

MakerBot Rewinds With Re-Release of 3D Printed Mixtape

by Gregory Han

MakerBot Rewinds With Re-Release of 3D Printed Mixtape

It was two years ago when MakerBot previewed the possibilities of personal 3D printers, delivered in the nostalgic form of a “press record+play” icon: the mixtape. The MakerBot Mixtape proved not only to be one of their first items and downloadable 3D design kits, but also became one of the company’s most popular pre-printed designs.

MakerBot Rewinds With Re Release of 3D Printed Mixtape in technology Category

Taking a cue from the music industries’ propensity for reissues and repackaging albums, the MakerBot Mixtape is being re-released for anyone who missed the limited first run back in 2012 and for those without their own 3D printer today. The new MakerBot Mixtape has been updated inside and out, with an improved user interface with easier drag and drop options, twice as much internal storage (increased from 2GB to 4GB), and most noticeably, new brightly colored casing combinations. The faux audio cassette shaped MP3 player is even formatted to store 3D printing STL files for future 3D modeling projects doubling as a storage device.

For now the MakerBot Mixtape is an exclusive release, only available at MakerBot retail locations in New York, Boston, and Greenwich, Connecticut for $40. That said, we’re holding out for 3D printed vinyl records to become a similar 3D printer option one day for full audiophile nostalgic effect.

Shelby Osborne is College Football’s First Female Defensive Back

by Margaret Eby

Shelby Osborne is College Football’s First Female Defensive Back

Shelby Osborne is College Football’s First Female Defensive Back

College football teams are one of those arenas where, outside of feel-good rom-coms, women are rarely included. Until now.

Shelby Osborne, a senior at Jeffersonville High School in Lafayette, Indiana, signed to Campbellsville University’s football program last week, making her the first female defensive back in the history of college football.

She’s not the first female player in college football, but when women are included on teams, they generally play kicker or holder. Osborne’s position is unique, and a real step forward for females playing the game. Most of the obstacles that women face being in the game have to do with size, not athleticism. But Osborne’s coach isn’t worried about her holding her own against a squadron of muscle-bound dudes.

“Being a defense back, it’s kind of like Deion Sanders,” her coach, Lonnie Oldham, told USA Today. “You can choose to hit or not hit. She’s got to make business decisions.”

Osborne played cornerback at her high school. She said that her teammates “didn’t believe me when I said ‘I’m going to do it.’ Then I showed up to practice each day and they’d be like, ‘She’s going to quit tomorrow.’ As the season went on, they started realizing I’m not going anywhere.”

“That’s when I earned their respect,” Osborne said. “And they started seeing me more as a teammate than another girl in class.”

“I’d wake up for 4 a.m. runs and stay at school until 8 p.m. working with the coaches,” she said. “I worked throughout the whole year, fell in love with the game, and didn’t want to give it up. When the season ended, I was desperate to find anyone who would take me and continue on the thing that captured my heart.”

Osborne was determined to find a college team to join her, despite facing rejection from schools she applied to across the country.

Finally, at an open recruitment at Campbellsville in Kentucky, she convinced coach Perry Thomsa to give her a shot.

When Osborne’s signing became national news, she said that it was inspiring to see other girls reaching out to her for tips on how to play football in male-dominated leagues.

“At first it was for me,” she said. “It was something I wanted to do, and I went out and achieved it. But now I have girls coming to me asking for help. It doesn’t just apply to football—just anything they don’t see as a possibility because there are certain professions viewed as male professions that they could go into that they might not have thought about.”

Dave Franco to Co-star With His Brother in Movie About The Room

by Jesse David Fox

The specific production details haven't been announced, but the movie about the making of the best worst movie ever, The Room — which James Franco is set to direct and star in as director/star/producer/writer/everything Tommy Wiseau — keeps on chugging along. Last night, after a screening of The Room, Dave Franco stood up during the Q&A portion to ask Wiseau, "How do you feel about me playing Greg Sestero in the movie?" Wiseau responded, "That's what I say: It's a good choice!" Sestero played Mark in The Room and wrote the book The Disaster Artist, which James Franco is adapting. Much of the book focuses on the friendship between Wiseau and Sestero, so it might be weird seeing those parts played by fairly similar-looking brothers. Sorry, not might. It will definitely be weird, but that'll be the point.

The two females, Sydney and Milli, are nearly 18 months old, while male Tucker is the youngest at 12 months old.

Koala keeper, Laura Jones said the trio are enjoying their time together and can often be spotted eating or sleeping close together – and occasionally on top of each other.

“Tucker is usually the poor guy on the bottom. I think he goes to sleep first and then the girls find a comfy spot on top of him,” said Laura. “He’s seems to quite like it at the moment though, as it may remind him of cuddling with his mum.”

Part of Taronga Zoo’s Koala breeding program, Sydney, Milli and Tucker all emerged from the pouch during last year’s breeding season. The Zoo has three more joeys getting ready to emerge this season.

Paraplegic in 'Iron Man' body suit will deliver World Cup's first kick

by By Jordan Valinsky

The first kick at the World Cup is likely to be a memorable one.

At Thursday's opening ceremony, a paraplegic will put on a robotic Iron Man-like body suit in order to make the inaugural kick. The futuristic exoskeleton, which was created by a team of 156 scientists, is controlled by the paraplegic's brain waves.

Discovery News further explains how the suit operates: "Electronic circuits in the device's 'feet' will send a return signal to the user via an artificial skin worn on the arm, conveying the sensation of movement and contact."

Zoo Miami Staff Step In To Raise A Vulnerable Baby Monkey

by Andrew Bleiman

On Friday, May 30th, Zoo Miami welcomed the birth of a male White-faced Saki monkey. This is the first birth of this species of Tropical American monkey for Zoo Miami. Found in the rainforest trees of Brazil, Guyana, and Venezuela, these fruit eating monkeys rarely come to the ground and are considered vulnerable due to habitat destruction and hunting for food and the pet trade. Unfortunately, the first-time mother rejected the offspring so it is now being hand raised by zoo staff.

Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino on Stalking Sutton Foster, Producing Broadway, and Bunheads Memories

by Denise Martin
Kevespada

Bunheads share, because Bunheads was a teen soap about dancers that included a drawn-out scene where two teenage boys competed for a girl's affection by impersonating Tommy Lee Jones' performance in a movie about old people having sex.

After the unfortunate and unjust cancellation of their series Bunheads last year, writer-producers Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino moved back to Brooklyn. But they couldn’t sever ties with leading lady Sutton Foster. If anything, they paid to get closer, volunteering to produce her next project, the Broadway musical Violet. The show, with music by Jeanine Tesori, stars Foster as a girl with a tremendous facial scar. It’s funny, strange, moving, and completely worth the price of admission; it is also up for four Tony Awards this weekend. The Palladinos chatted with Vulture about their obsession with Foster and the perks of producing theatre. And just because we could, we found out about the origins of Bunheads’ Tommy Lee Jones impression-off.

When I saw Violet last month, I had no idea what it was about. It’s almost better not to know going in.
Amy Sherman-Palladino: That's the exciting thing. It's hard to explain to people. It's kind of like, just go see it. It's fun when people have no preconceived anything and they're like, Wow.
Dan Palladino: It's the best way to see anything, but especially that show, I think.
Amy: Even if you're not necessarily someone who likes musicals because suddenly plants stand up and start dancing around and singing and that's just weird, this is a musical that is so rooted in emotion and real struggles and the need for love and acceptance and not feeling like you fit in anywhere. You are going to experience a whirlwind of the most rollicking music and laughing and emotion, and then you're having cocktails in an hour and a half [because there is no intermission], which is perfect.

I read that you saw the show at City Center last summer, when it was billed as a one-night-only concert event. How did you get involved from there?
Amy: We heard through the rumor mill that the Roundabout Theatre Company was toying with it because they suddenly had an opening in their season. We cold-called [artistic director] Todd Haimes and said, "We heard through the grapevine that you're thinking of maybe doing Violet ..."
Dan: We saw the concert that was one night, and even though there were stands and they had sheet music, they did the dialogue and the entire show.
Amy: And Josh was in it.
Dan: Two-time Tony Award nominee Josh Henry was in it. You just saw the whole thing. For us, it was like, This has to go on. What can we do to help? From agents and contacts and stuff we found out the Roundabout was thinking about it, too. We just got together with Todd, and it all happened very quickly. It had to happen quickly. We just offered financial aid because they needed it, because they were not budgeted for a musical, they were budgeted for a play. From there on, we just said to everybody, the creative team, Jeanine Tesori, Brian Crawley—
Amy: Leigh Silverman
Dan: —the director, Leigh Silverman, “We'd love to sit in on any of the process because we're (a) fascinated; (b) geeks; and (c) fans.
Amy: And (d) stalkers.
Dan: At that point, it almost had very little to do with Sutton. She was cast in it and goes into her incredible transformation. They were kind and generous enough to let us sit in on a lot of the rehearsals, tech rehearsals, the CD recording. We were just happy to be there for anything.
Amy: We started taking our computers and just sitting in the theater and working. I think they just figured, Oh, they're just there all the time as part of the scenery. They just got used to us being around all the time. It was just amazing.
Dan: We would spruce up the bathrooms every now and then.
Amy: We really would. Sometimes the bathrooms weren't clean enough and they were not acceptable. We love this show! The bathrooms must be clean!

Did Sutton know that you made overtures to Roundabout?
Amy: Immediately after the concert we asked her what was happening with the show, and she said, "I don't know. There's rumors and I really hope it goes on, but we're not sure." So she knew because we attacked her immediately. And also, the show is so wonderful, the music is so incredible, but this part for Sutton was like a part of the ages.
Dan: It's perfect for her.
Amy: It was like, When is this part on Broadway going to come along again for the lovely Ms. Foster? We really wanted her to do it. We wanted her to be tortured eight shows a week.
Dan: Weirdly, out of all the roles she's done on Broadway, this girl who has an axe scar running down her face was actually more like Sutton than any other role she's played. I think she would say the same thing. Emotionally, she had an attachment to her — she's also from the South, she had a religious upbringing, she had family issues, just like 99.9 percent of us have had. You see it in her performance. We've seen her perform this dozens of times now, and the connection is always there. There's no artifice to this role. And this is her natural singing voice, which she doesn't always do. When she does the Shrek princess, she gives it more of a Shrek princess edge. When she did The Drowsy Chaperone, she had more of a sassy thing. Same with Anything Goes. This is actually her singing voice, which was really fun to hear and fun to watch her do. It doesn't get more natural than this for her.

So, needless to say, you kept in touch with Sutton after Bunheads ended.
Dan: That goes back to (d) stalker.
Amy: There are not enough restraining orders in the world to get us away from Sutton Foster. I think she's just accepted it.
Dan: Sometimes if you work on a movie or a TV show, you work with someone very closely, and after the job is done, you walk away and have absolutely no contact with that person, and it's very natural. We had a weird bond with Sutton that we don't always have with everybody we work with. We're now just friends.
Amy: It's a lifer thing. We're very much entwined in her life, in her business. We're all up in her business.

Will you be attending the Tonys with her?
Amy: We'll be attending the Tonys, but I think she's going to be a little busy. She has to be onstage, I want to make sure her focus is clear.
Dan: There's a four-minute performance [from Violet] and they've been nice enough to ask us our opinions, so we're working with the creative team on getting the best Violet performance. We'll be at the Tony rehearsals and all that stuff. It's another interesting new thing we've been able to do being involved with all of this.
Amy: Performing on the Tonys is a completely different animal because you're doing it for the television audience. Everyone in the theater knows the show, so you're adjusting more for camera, to tell the people at home who have not come to see Violet: "What are you waiting for? You will not live forever. An asteroid is going to hit the Earth at any minute, get your ass off the couch and come see Violet." We were sitting at this rehearsal talking about camera angles and Sutton is right behind us saying, "It's so weird that you guys are here! Weren't we just doing this a couple months ago?" It's very weird, but like everything in our lives that has to do with Sutton Foster, it's quite wonderful.

What will they be performing?
Amy: I don't think we should say.
Dan: We can say it's a very clever mash-up of two or three different components in the show. It's not one straight number.
Amy: It's lovely.

In the liner notes for the Violet cast recording, Amy, you write about having gone through the “heartache of cancellation” together.
Amy: The incredibly humane — I say “incredibly” sarcastically — way they do it on ABC Family is: You're done. You've shot it and then months go by before they make their decision. We were way, way, way off into our other world by the time they officially canceled it. But we're not children. Sutton's a pro, we're pros, we've all been through stuff that's gonna go and stuff that's not gonna go. I think we were all pretty much aware at a certain point that it just wasn't the right fit and it's probably not gonna happen. The thing is, in a production situation, if they don't pick up certain elements at a certain time — you lose your crew, and when you lose your key people, getting that back together months down the line is not doable, and everybody knows that. It was a special little time, we came together and did great work and met each other, and now we move on and can be old and drunk and sad about what happened before.

Can we talk about what went into the series’ last number, “Makin’ Whoopee”? It follows a pretty heartbreaking scene between Michelle and Ginny, and the number itself is sort of both sexy and sad.
Amy: We wanted a slightly out-of-context dance to really wrap that season up in a bang-up way. And sort of in a big way because the writing was kind of on the wall and we wanted it to feel special — not just go out on a cliff-hanger or a hug. Our wonderful Marguerite Derricks was heavily involved in that whole thing. I had a very clear picture of the outfits that our wonderful costume girl made, and the tone of it. And I wanted Sam Phillips to sing it. Those are the things I knew. Then Dan worked quite a bit on the arrangement with them. It worked out in a sad, awful, perfect way. It was a big deal. It was a bigger shot than we thought it was going to be at the time because of the big crane, and we had to take the set apart, but it turned out beautifully. We wanted to center it on the fact that our girls were at that moment right on the precipice of little girl turning into non-little girl, and that's what we wanted the number to convey.

Do you know what would have come next for any of the characters?
Amy: We had bits and pieces in our head of what would happen, but to be totally honest, we kind of knew what was coming, so we were not necessarily — we had ideas and thoughts, things we wanted to do, characters we wanted to bring in, more relationship stuff, but we didn't have the next season arced out or anything like that because we were busy being drunk and old.

I have to ask: Where did the Tommy Lee Jones impression competition come from? Dan, I know you directed the episode ...
Dan: Originally the pitch was dueling Lincolns, because of the Daniel Day-Lewis Lincoln movie. It struck me, the idea of two young men obsessed with Lincoln. It would be very natural to have them have a Lincoln-off where they're doing different things. I originally wrote it with the scene where he says, "Now! Now! Now!" Very Daniel Day-Lewis. And then at the last minute we didn't get the rights. We needed some sort of permission, and the network insisted on getting that permission, so at the last minute we had to find something different. That was tricky. We were running out of time and finally we just thought ... what was that movie called again?
Amy: Hope Springs!
Dan: I watched that over and over again to find things for them to do. I think I found just enough. It was a long journey, but we wound up in some eccentric place where — You're remembering it, so we hit some sort of chord!
Amy: The Lincoln thing went to the table read, and it was really funny and totally killed. The boys all knew Daniel Day-Lewis doing Lincoln. Then we changed it, and it was one of the funniest things ever — everybody was like, "What are they doing? What impression are they doing?" They watched Hope Springs and they did their actor stuff, but it was so weird watching them do Tommy Lee Jones in Hope Springs. Not just Tommy Lee Jones, but Tommy Lee Jones in Hope Springs.
Dan: More surreal, which is sometimes funnier.
Amy: Those boys threw themselves 510 percent into two impressions that they had no idea about.
Dan: I have a fantasy of some assistant sitting with Tommy Lee Jones in New Mexico or wherever he lives, saying, "Have you seen this?" And Tommy Lee Jones going, "What the hell are they doing? What is this? Is that funny? I don't even get it."

What's next?
Amy: We've got irons in the fire. TV, film, that sort of stuff. They're not real until they're real, but we've got stuff going on. They're not rid of us yet!

See Peter Dinklage’s High-School Mullet

by Lindsey Weber

"Lannister in the front, Dothraki in the back," jokes a Reddit commenter on the discovery of Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage's 1985 yearbook photo. Young Dinklage looks pretty tough and quotes playwright Sam Shepard below the photo: "Words are tools of imagery in motion." So what words does this particular image speak? Probably some lyrics from a Journey song?

Gossip Girl’s Zuzanna Szadkowski Will Be on the New Season of Girls

by Kylie Gilbert

Gossip Girl ended a year and a half ago, but there's still a Chuck-and-Blair-shaped hole in our hearts. Now comes news that the most easily beloved actress from the series will be popping up on another New York–set show: Zuzanna Szadkowski, who played Dorota for six glorious seasons, is headed to Girls. At last night's Gordon Parks Foundation Awards, Szadkowski was with BFF Andrew Rannells, who seemed thrilled about the whole thing. "This [new] season [of Girls] has felt like I’m much more part of the cast," Rannells says. "Also I think it’s cool to say that my friend Zuzanna here also did several episodes this season, so that was really fun." Szadkowski says the two, who have been friends since high school, haven't worked together since they first moved to New York years ago. "She was going to Barnard and I had just dropped out of college, so Girls is our big professional reunion," Rannells says. As for what we can expect from season four, Rannells and Szadkowski are mum except for one tidbit: "I’m definitely showing some flesh, I can say that," Rannells admits. "Big spoiler, though. It's Girls."

In Praise of "Go Fuck Y'Self" Women: Lori Petty in Orange is the New Black

by Sara Stewart
Kevespada

lori petty always and forever

Orange is the New Black is back Friday, all 13 episodes of the second season will be miraculously available at 12:01 AM on Netflix. And what a return it is. I've only seen the first episode, and suddenly all my other must-see TV seems so, well, superfluous. I won't ruin anything by divulging too many plot details, but it starts off strong, and promises to only get stronger.

In brief, Piper (Taylor Schilling) is hauled out of solitary, where she's been since last season's harrowing closer in which she beat Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) to a pulp -- and possibly death. She's sent on a journey to an unknown destination, denied information and a pee break by unconcerned male guards (who are nevertheless discussing amongst themselves how it's now inappropriate to use the term "bitch").

That the episode is directed by Jodie Foster makes so much sense to me. Like much of the cast of OITNB, she's a woman who's never fit into the traditional feminine entertainment-industry mold. But I was even happier to see a face from the past show up as an inmate: Lori Petty.

Petty only had a brief run in the spotlight in the early nineties, but she brought something new to the big screen that I naively thought was a sure sign of impending diversity for women in film. Hers was a raucous, androgynous presence so different from the other stars of the decade (Winona, Alicia, Gwyneth, Meg -- ultra-feminine, all!). Petty's characters started shit. They were a little edgy. Not easy romantic marks. And she sported short hair -- like, really short. If I could have picked someone to go on to star in the first big female superhero movie (you know, the one we're still waiting for), my choice would have been her.

In Point Break, Petty wasn't just arm candy for Keanu's character (though, okay, she eventually had to endure the stereotypical kidnapping scenario): she was a surfer herself, and she did her own stunts alongside the boys. Here she is talking about the ten stitches she got during filming, among other things.

In the women's-baseball movie A League of Their Own, her character Kit was the scrappy little sister to Geena Davis' glamorous lead. (Petty was allegedly a speedier runner than Davis, and had to tone it down so Davis could appear faster.)

But the real reason I've always held a torch for Petty is Tank Girl, a fairly bad movie based on a decent comic. That said, it was still a deliciously campy flag-wave for riot grrrl-hood. Courtney Love was even the executive soundtrack coordinator; check out the Hole song in the trailer.

Despite the movie's myriad shortcomings, even the New York Times had to concede the inherent appeal of Petty, with Janet Maslin writing that "Tank Girl may be sending out a dog-whistle signal to its own special constituency, fans of an androgynous punk heroine who's so underground she's almost buried.... Chief among its strong points is Lori Petty, a buzz-cut fashion plate in a Prozac necklace, who brings the necessary gusto to Tank Girl's flippancy."

So whatever happened to Petty? (And androgynous punk heroines, for that matter?)

She went on to write and direct a movie about her own troubled adolescence in the south, for one thing. 2008's The Poker House ended up garnering better reviews than anything she ever starred in. It also featured a young actress in her feature film debut, playing Petty's character. Her name? Jennifer Lawrence.

Petty's done her share of guest spots on TV in recent years (House, Prison Break, CSI: NY), but there's something really gratifying about seeing her show up on OITNB under the direction of Foster. Looking like a real person, I might add: like nearly all the women on this show, she's got a face that looks like a real face, devoid of obvious surgical tinkering and with the lines that show she's lived a life. Still sporting the super-short hair and that chirpy cartoon voice.

After watching the episode, I found myself reminiscing about Petty and concluded someone like her would never get as far today, as a young star, as she did in the nineties. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe OITNB, and its runaway popularity, is paving the way for a new crop of unconventional female actors and shows.

Or maybe not. Petty is still obviously nostalgic for that role and that era, as she articulated in an awesomely loopy piece for Bullett Media:

"While I'm directing youngsters who end up making millions (they're young and beautiful and talented and rich as fuck, and I'm only old and beautiful and talented), other famous girls their age are getting poison shot into their lips -- and foreheads and knees and elbows -- before they can legally drink champagne. I'd like to hear how many ways you could say, "Maybe you should go fuck y'self," if someone told you to get implants in your butt."

My sense is that Petty's appearance on the show is a one-time thing, but here's hoping not. In any case, I'm awfully glad to see her face again, especially in the company of other "go fuck y'self" types.

Brad Paisley Is A Great Guy

by ent lawyer

west-burro(ass)

Brad Paisley showed what a great guy he was this weekend when he played a show in Kansas. For whatever reason, the Westboro Baptist church members decided they were going to show up with one of their usual crap protests and Brad took matters into his own hands. He took a selfie with members of the group and then when he posted it to Twitter called them west-burro(ass) and said he hoped he would be able to play extra loud so they would have to listen to his music all night.

Bouncing Baby Hippo Is Ready to Meet the Public in Portugal

by Andrew Bleiman

4

It is with great pleasure that Portugal's Zoo Santo Inácio announces the birth of a female Pygmy Hippopotamus. The tiny baby marks a big step in preserving this endangered West African species. The main causes threatening these herbivores are deforestation, hunting, agricultural land development and civil conflicts.

Just 3,000 individuals remain in the wild, and a few more than 240 in zoological parks. Zoo Santo Inácio joined this cause in 2006 by welcoming a female, Romina, and two years later, with the arrival of a male, Kibwana. The couple has lived together at the zoo for four years, and is part of an important European breeding program for endangered species (EEP), led by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA).

Hear Jenny Lewis’s New Single, ‘Just One of the Guys’

by Lindsey Weber

"No matter how hard I try, to be just one of the guys/There's a little something inside that won't let me," sings Jenny Lewis on "Just One of the Guys," the first single off her upcoming album, The Voyager. The title is funny if only because of the fact that the song is produced by Beck. (Is that him in the background?) And while the rest of the album promises production and songwriting from the likes of Ryan Adams and Jonathan Rice, we'll let the downer parts of the song fade into its wonderfully breezy-sounding backdrop. Summertime shouldn't feel this introspective. The Voyager is out on July 29.

See Oberyn and the Mountain As Bathing-Suit Pals

by Jesse David Fox

Regardless of how much we'd like to make jokes, we're going to keep this post spoiler-free, if you haven't seen last night's Game of Thrones. As was already established, Oberyn Martell battled the Mountain. No matter the result, here is a cute picture of the characters' respective actors being pals. Pedro Pascal posted the pic on Instagram earlier today. Enjoy your bathing suits, very-in-shape men – winter's coming.

New Web Series 'BROTHERS' Shares The Stories of Trans Men

by Kat Callahan on ROYGBIV, shared by Rebecca Rose to Jezebel

Some might argue that transgender characters, and their actors and actresses, have made it in the media, the way gay and lesbian characters have made it before. However, this is premature. The case can be made that while trans women actresses and the transgender characters they play are finally getting the recognition which has been too long in coming, the same cannot be said about trans men.
