America, The Beautiful — In 52 Incredible Photos

by Marshall Bright
allie

sorry this is so long but i really enjoyed it

We live in a sea of images. You probably have a little device within reach right now that contains photos of everything from last weekend's brunch to last year's office Christmas party. Not to mention all the images you scroll through on Google, Facebook, and Instagram in any given day.

Because of that, the idea of a coffee-table book of photography may seem not only old-fashioned, but downright ridiculous. But, especially in our ever-connected age, there's something to be said for the power of curated images on the printed page. Plus, you can't wrap up and gift a Tumblr account this holiday season.

Taschen's The United States of America contains over 700 stunning images of all 50 states from National Geographic 's archive. The book is a state-by-state visual guide to more than 100 years of American history, from early black-and-white photos of the still-unsettled Western frontier to full-color shots of a post-Katrina New Orleans.

Ahead, we've culled together images from each of the 50 states (plus Guam and Washington, D.C.), one from each, to give you a glimpse into the sheer scope and scale of the remarkable collection — and our remarkable country.

Review: Prime Objective Perfecting Face Primer

Happy Tuesday Everyone! Today I will be doing another product review from Studio Gear Cosmetics. You might remember me during a review of there True Whipped Stain Gloss back in May. Well today I'm here to tell you all about there new face primer.

Review: Prime Objective Perfecting Face Primer

I'm a huge fan of face primers and love trying them. So therefore I was super excited to try out Prime Objective Perfecting Face Primer.  I have been using this primer for almost a month now and been loving it.

Review: Prime Objective Perfecting Face Primer

All you need is two pumps of the primer to cover your whole face. The primer feel super nice on your skin. Plus it help make your skin look and feel smoother. The best part is your makeup last all day.

Review: Prime Objective Perfecting Face Primer

Which is prefect for me. Since I wear my makeup for 12 hours a day.  Some of the main Ingredients in the primer are retinol an milk protein.

Studio Gear was nice and gave me a coupon code for all of my readers. The code is for a 10% off your purchase. The Coupon Code is BB

HAVE A GREAT TUESDAY!

The TJ Maxx Christmas Candle Is The Gift Of The Season

allie

important 90s-inspired outfits/hair in this video

It's seen more family Christmases, secular office White Elephants, and friendly gift exchanges than any of us. It is always on sale, but never sells out. You almost certainly have one right now—perhaps within arms reach. It burns for 80 hours, and then it is gone. It is the Christmas Candle; that marbled, pine-scented, formerly $12.99 but now $8.99 symbol of the holiday season that cannot be contained by any specific gifting occasion, nor a votive canister. (Seriously—put them in a jar or something! Please.)

This weekend, Aidy Bryant, Emma Stone, and co. reminded us that the best/worst gift of all time has been with us all along. It's not a cozy Ukrainian blanket, nor is it a nano current device. It's been waiting for you always—in a messy stack along the checkout line at TJ Maxx. Go to it.

Jensen Ackles Has Entered The Insane Celebrity Baby Name Race

by J Harvey
allie

Lol matty

wenn28674204-500x735

Why would you do this to a poor defenseless infant? Supernatural star and Tumblr moistener Jensen Ackles revealed that his family has grown on Instagram yesterday. His wife Daneel Harris Ackles gave birth to twins on Friday night. The twins were given effed up names. Are you ready?

“Danneel, JJ and I are excited to announce the birth of our twins Zeppelin Bram and Arrow Rhodes,” Ackles wrote alongside a photo of Dr. Seuss’ Thing 1 and Thing 2. “They were born early yesterday morning.Everyone is doing great! #twinning.”

Ok, so Arrow Rhodes isn’t world-ending. It’s certainly no Pilot Inspektor. It sounds like an LL Bean knock-off clothing line that’s sold at Kohl’s, but it will probably be ok. You’re definitely going to end up with an odd, guttural-sounding nickname for the kid because “Arrow” is just too unwieldy to be calling out every day and humans are verbally lazy. So you’re going to be coming into the house and going “AAAAH, you home?” or “AARR, shut off the Playstation, it’s dinner time!” Awkward. Or they could just go with “Row.” They’ve got some decisions to make.

But ZEPPELIN. You named your child ZEPPELIN. ZEPPELIN. I’m not sure what’s worse – the possibility that they named him after an ancient band or that his namesake is the aircraft with history’s worst safety record. Once the other kids look up what a “zeppelin” is, that kid is screwed. Especially if he’s stout. And in our evolving faster-than-light digital age, the mean kids with the insta-meme producing chips in their heads are going to keep telepathically trolling him via their head wi-fi with pics of the Hindenburg Disaster.

Jensen and Daneel already have a 3-year-old daughter named Justice Jay, who works in a hair salon and writes poetry on the side.

Madge Wants To Remarry Sean Penn, Hates Donald Trump

by J Harvey
allie

What the fuck

MadgeSean0

Madonna – she’s just like us! Except for the wanting to remarry Sean Penn part. Her being married to that guy once was enough for me… he screams at the microwave to go faster and the dogs are afraid of him. Madge’s twerking her possibly new ass beside junior cat person Ariana Grande the other night was but one saucy delight amongst many at her Art Basel benefit. She also brought back her latest stage creation, the trampy ladyclown with the drinking problem, to raise money and troll President-elect Donald Trump with the inadvertent help of Britney Spears. By the way, that’s Madge in the pic up top. Lisa Frank isn’t coming out with a horror movie.

People reports that Madonna auctioned off a bunch of her rare photographs, tour memorabilia and other celebrity-related prizes to raise money for the country of Malawi. There were a bunch of famous people in the audience and she brought her ex-husband Sean Penn up to help her sell shit, including a photo from their wedding taken by Herb Ritts. It sounded and looked (see the Instagram video below) as awkward as you might think. He crawled through her legs when he took the stage; there was a moment in which he handcuffed her (for which there might be a disturbing historical precedent), and she revealed (again) that she’s still in love with him. She also offered to remarry him if he bid $150,000. Charity is lovely, but yeesh, people must have been squirming in in their hugely expensive seats.

Much of the event was shared on social media, including a moment where Madonna offered to re-marry Penn if he bid $150,000.

“I’m still in love with you,” she told Penn — as seen in video on Frankel’s Snapchat.

Hat tip to reality television fixture Bethenny Frankel, who apparently scored a ticket to the event, then put it on Snapchat. People should hire her ass. She gets good footage!

Madge also poked fun at Sean’s police record as he handcuffed her (seriously, why):

“For once, he’s not the one being arrested,” she said.

The Huffington Post reports that Lady Madonna also flipped the bird to President-elect Trump while throwing shade at his thread count. She covered Britney’s “Toxic” while pictures of Trump flashed behind her.

Seated on a chair for most of the performance, Madonna cooed lyrics like “You know that you’re toxic,” while backdropped by a photo of Trump with a “Pinocchio” nose and quotes from the president-elect about building a wall.

She prefaced “Toxic” by revealing to the audience that she’s been in Trump’s bed in Miami. I retched at first, too, but she says he wasn’t there at the time. It was for a photo shoot and his sheets weren’t up to her standards. You can watch it below but be warned… she talks before it. A LOT.

The “Material Girl” revealed she had been in Trump’s bed before — though he wasn’t there. She was shooting a magazine spread, and said his sheets were cheap. “They won’t be Egyptian cotton because we all know how he feels about Muslims don’t we,” Madonna joked.

It sounds like it was a crazed night for a good cause. We all know that there’s no way in hell Madonna would remarry her ragey ex-husband, though. Despite being an abusive prick, he’s 56 years old and fairly gnarled. There’s no youth to succubus out of him to keep staving off the aging process. She’s getting older and needs all the lifeforce she can get, especially since she might have added “new ass upkeep” to the beauty regimen.

Another unfortunate title in our ALB line up. The author, however, insists that this title came to her. This book is actually decent enough as a memoir/personal faith story. The contents are totally appropriate for a general religion section, but I just can’t get past the oozing.

Pizza Tendered as Form of ID at Amherst Bar, Chaos Ensues

by Dana Hatic
allie

Yesssssssssss

A doorman got slapped

Pizza is not a form of ID, as a woman in Central Mass. learned all too well last week when she presented a slice of pizza to a doorman outside Amherst’s Monkey Bar, instead of offering an actual form of identification, the Daily Hampshire Gazette reported.

When the doorman inexplicably refused to accept the pizza as her ID, the woman reportedly slapped him in the face. Police were called to the scene and ended up arresting a different woman for interfering with officers trying to deal with the pizza situation. That woman, a 21-year-old from Missouri, was initially charged with disorderly conduct, but the charge was later dismissed in court, and the woman told Jezebel in an email that she didn’t know about the pizza incident when she tried to intervene on behalf of her friend. Incidentally, the pizza woman was issued a notice to stay away from Monkey Bar.

Where this woman was keeping the pizza, whether it was contained in any kind of packaging or free-floating, and whether she slapped the doorman with the pizza are all unknown parts of this equation. However, one thing is certain: Regardless of how much any one person loves pizza, pizza is not actually representative of said person and therefore not acceptable identification in any circumstance.

How to Shop the MAC Mariah Carey Collection

by Cheryl Wischhover
allie

omg

It’s finally here.

After weeks of leaks and speculation about MAC’s Mariah Carey collection – Will it be sparkly? Will it have a butterfly? – we finally have some answers: Yes and HELL YES.

The collection will hit MAC stores and the website on December 15th. The collection includes five lipsticks in frost and cremesheen finishes ($20), five Lipglass shades ($18.50), two lip pencils ($22), two eyeshadow quads ($41), one liquid liner ($22), two sets of lashes ($18), a gold shimmer Skinfinish with her face embossed on it ($45.50), two blushes ($24), two powder blushes ($24), a loose powder ($39.50), and two brushes.

If you are the type who collects limited-edition collections, this one has some obvious must-haves in it. The lipsticks are cased in packaging that look like it’s been dipped in glitter, and the actual bullet is embossed with a butterfly. The Skinfinish, as already noted, has Mariah’s face on it. How can you possibly use that? You can’t, so just buy two and keep one in a special box.

From a color perspective, the eyeshadow quads are both excellent neutrals, one warmer and one cooler. The lipsticks are all very Mariah-esque browns and peaches. There is nothing bold to be found here. The Lipglasses are all, obviously, shimmery. Shade names include things like “I Get So OOC,” “MCizzle,” and “Diamond Butterfly.” Forget about tasteful creams and just enjoy the pure exuberant sparkle that is Mariah and this collection.

No word from MAC yet whether or not this collection will be available to shop early for MAC Obsessed or Devoted members like the Selena collection was, but we’ll update when we hear.

Open Post: Hosted By McDonald’s Italy Introducing The Nutella Burger

by J Harvey

Do you like hazelnut? Are you currently in Italy? If you’re both of those things, you are right now racing that ass to your nearest McDonald’s Italia! Buzzfeed reports that they’ve debuted the Sweety Nutella burger! It’s a dessert burger that consists of a big heaping serving of Nutella, sandwiched between two sweet buns.

Reaction has obviously been mixed:

The reason why you can’t seem to find any vacation flights to Italy right now is because Nutella-loving people have booked every possible flight to the kicking boot-shaped country to scarf down some of its goodness. They’ll be taking pics of themselves eating their Sweety Nutella burgers while pretending to hold up the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Look for it to become a meme. Ciao Italia!

Check out some footage of the Sweety Nutella burger below.

Today, some people’s fears are more urgent

by Mahroh Jahangiri

Fam, this is written with lots of love for you.

I’m seeing a lot of people sharing their fears right now. Pointing to Trump/Pence/everyone down ballot’s vitriol against people who are survivors, undocumented, Muslim, POC, queer, trans, women, and other shades of human. It’s hard to imagine anything else you could say.

But if you’re posting about fear right now: could you please first take a minute to ask yourself whether any place you call home has had to call the cops* to temporarily guard entryways today? (e.g. Can you go to your office/school without fear of bombs/arson?) Can you please first ask yourself whether the fear you are feeling today requires a safety plan?

(By safety plan, I don’t mean a Hamilton and cute kittens self-care night. By safety plan, I mean a conversation with your kids/your spouse/on your own today about whether they/you will go in public this week, whether you can go to school this week without bodily injury, whether you can go to your office without bodily injury, whether you can stand on a subway platform without bodily injury. I mean do you need a safety plan to figure out what changes to your daily routine you’ll need to make today to not get killed).

If your answer to either of these questions is no (hint: probably because you are white), sit tight on your fear for a minute (or a month or more). And tell me, instead, how you’ll show up for the people who answered “yes.” For the people whose fears are, without doubt, more urgent and involve getting harassed, assaulted, detained, deported, or killed yesterday or in the upcoming weeks.

Show me that you’re listening to and focusing on these people.

Show me what work you are doing for them today and tomorrow.

Show me that you’ll put your body (however vulnerable it already is) between the state/its klanswomen and the people it will come after first. Rest assured, there are always people the state/mobs come after first—and it probably isn’t most of you.

*Cops kill people. We live in a country where people have to choose between them and vigilante violence.

In Praise of the Little Fancy Bitch Aesthetic

by Rebecca Jennings
allie

i needed a lol today and this was enjoyable

On the stylistic virtues of Veruca Salt, Nellie Oleson, and Muffy from ‘Arthur.’

In ninth grade, my English teacher read us The Destructors by Graham Greene. In it, two very bad teenage boys do something bad. I can’t remember what it was (bad), but I do remember that the overall takeaway of the story was that they were bad, very bad, and when you leave here and go out into the world, do not be like them, which is bad.

The teacher then asked us to raise our hands if we had any sympathy for these, indeed, truly terrible characters. From the very front row of the classroom, I raised mine immediately, and it wasn’t until I turned around that I realized I’d been the only one to do so. I sheepishly lowered my hand and the teacher grimaced as if to say, “I look forward to reading about your future murder trial.” Everyone laughed, and then he changed the subject.

This was not the first time I realized I was more interested in terrible people than good ones, at least when it comes to stories. I love a villain, and over the years, I’ve developed a particular soft spot for a certain kind.

Veruca Salt. Muffy Crosswire. Lavinia in A Little Princess. Angelica Pickles. These are the characters little girls are told, over and over again, not to emulate. You can be anything, the world says, but definitely don’t be that.

Here is a very short quiz to help you determine whether a character is going to be one of these: Look at her collar. Is it loose, dirty, or not even worth describing at all? If so, she’s a sympathetic character who will probably accomplish some kind of impressive and noble feat before the story’s end.

But is her collar frilly, high-neck, brightly colored and/or heavily accessorized? Congratulations! You’ve found the character on whom the writer has projected his or her own fears about femininity and materialism — or as I call her, the Little Fancy Bitch.

That is a term of endearment, by the way, because I believe this trope to be woefully misunderstood. The funny thing about the Little Fancy Bitch is that often she isn’t really a villain at all — most of the time, she’s actually a friend or acquaintance of the protagonist, written into the story solely to show how cool and chill said protagonist is. But to me, she just illustrates how overrated being cool and chill is.

Main characters in children’s books, from Cinderella to Charlie Bucket, are generally polite, inquisitive, courageous, and kind, and exist so that all (non-sociopathic) children will identify with them. These are all wonderful traits, to be sure — but ultimately, these characters don’t really bring much personality-wise besides a certain naiveté that gasps, “Who, me?! A protagonist?!”

In contrast, there’s the Little Fancy Bitch, whose general attitude is, “You’re damn right, I’m the protagonist” — even when she’s not. Cutting and sometimes cruel, she’s a prissy snot who tries way too hard and cares only about herself, repelling others in the process. Which, fair. You say things like “Hmph!” while crossing your arms over your immaculate lace blouse and all the other nine-year-olds will hate you. That is how childhood works.

But I’ve had a fondness for this sort of character that’s only grown over the years, and I think I know why. The Little Fancy Bitch is a trope that’s supposed to warn children against giving in to their most stereotypically girlish impulses — caring deeply about their appearance, judging others and excluding them accordingly, and demanding attention and praise at all times. But what it ends up offering is an alternative to the quiet, curious protagonist. In a world of bookworms and tomboys, the Little Fancy Bitch is an unapologetic try-hard who has more important things to take care of than worrying about what everyone else thinks of her.

It’s also important to mention, I think, that the Little Fancy Bitch is ultimately a comedic device. She’s there because the things she says are hilarious, and in children’s books, the girls don’t often get to be the ones delivering the jokes.

Above all, however, she’s stylish as hell. And from books to films to TV cartoons, her fashion sense has remained astonishingly consistent, combining traditional notions of old money with maximalist femininity. Think frilly, over-accessorized pinafores, steam-cleaned pea coats, blindingly white knee socks, and hair that behaves exactly how it’s supposed to.

Moreover, every Little Fancy Bitch throughout history has had one signature, defining accessory. And with the fanciest and bitchiest of seasons upon us, it’s time you found your own fancy, bitchy accessory and embraced your inner spoiled (albeit heavily misunderstood) brat.

Veruca Salt, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

While the red dress Julie Dawn Cole wore in the 1971 theatrical adaptation Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is certainly iconic, the original illustrations in the 1964 Roald Dahl novel depict Veruca in a white fur coat, pink hair bow, and pink tutu. In keeping with tradition, here is a Stella McCartney version that is just as bitchy as that time Veruca and her family literally stole their Golden Ticket from one of their OWN FACTORY WORKERS.

Shop: Stella McCartney Oversize Faux Fur Jacket, $1,720

Lucy van Pelt, Peanuts

Having never seen a Peanuts movie, my understanding is that Lucy van Pelt’s whole deal is sobbing theatrically, engaging in light-to-medium bullying, and spitting real feminist truths like, “Boys are lucky. They never have to worry about things like sauce pans.” All this while wearing a very prissy blue dress, which MSGM has given a very Tumblr-esque, 2016-meets-1965 makeover.

Shop: MSGM Sheer Long-sleeve Ruffle Dress, $513

Samantha Parkington, American Girl

Not everyone will agree here, but out of all the American Girls, Samantha is both the fanciest and the bitchiest. Maybe not in the traditional sense of the word, but, like others on this list, Samantha has the sort of attitude that only comes from a life of sheltered privilege and the ability to say things that are naive or ignorant but that sound polite, but only because she’s wearing a beautiful plaid cape. Here’s one by Vanessa Seward that sadly does not come with a muff.

Shop: Vanessa Seward Conan cape, $1,015

Muffy Crosswire, Arthur

Muffy — whom the animators decided should be a monkey for what I assume is some kind of ironic statement — was always portrayed as a foil to her nerdy tomboy best friend Francine. While their opinions on the merits of beauty pageants differ, however, they’re both basically decent kids, except that Muffy gets to live in a giant mansion and wear impeccable cream-colored blouses. Note the intentional impracticality of such a garment; if you’ve got $390 to spend on a blouse, then you are sort of required to know how to consume soup without spilling it all over yourself.

Shop: Needle & Thread Lace-Trimmed Silk Chiffon Blouse, $390

Eloise, Eloise at the Plaza

Eloise has all the makings of a Little Fancy Bitch with very little of the bitchiness, although in my opinion if you are an American who pronounces “rather” like “rawther” that makes you at least some degree of a snob. Also, to this day the Plaza Hotel has an Eloise Suite that is available for the highly bitchy price of $2,043 per night, plus tax. For about one-fourth of that cost, here are some suspender trousers that a more chilled-out Eloise at the Wythe Hotel might wear.

Shop: Y-3 Suspender Trousers, $470

Lavinia, A Little Princess

Inarguably the bitchiest character on this list, Lavinia (no last name necessary) is a downright monster who orders Sara to build a fire, then instructs her to not touch anything else in her bedroom because her hands are gross, then makes fun of her servant body odor, all while brushing her glorious brown hair. There’s no question, however, that her elaborately collared green dress is on point. This Burberry Prorsum version combines all the attitude with none of the, y’know, horrifying class-based cruelty.

Shop: Burberry Prorsum Stitched Georgette Dress, $2,785

Marie, The Aristocats

Here is where my thesis that you can identify a Little Fancy Bitch by her collar proves itself infallible: It even applies to cats. Unlike her less-cute brothers, Marie wears a bubblegum pink collar with a giant bow, which she accessorizes with a second bow on the top of her head. The entire basis of her personality is that she demands to be treated far better than her brothers simply “Because I’m a lady, that’s why.” Fair point! Plus, the entire movie centers on the fact that the Aristocats are way better than all the other regular cats, which is very bitchy. Also bitchy: This choker made of pink velvet and actual pearls.

Shop: Aamaya by Priyanka Velvet and Pearl Choker, $370

Alice, Alice in Wonderland

Another possibly controversial opinion of mine is that I firmly believe Alice’s insistence on excessive politeness veers on bitchy, but in the best way possible. She questions absolutely everyone and everything around her, which is pretty ballsy for a seven-year-old, and demands for everything to make logical sense in a world defined by its nonsensicality. Plus, she’s rather eager to launch into some very heated discussions with a certain invisible cat, a chain-smoking caterpillar, and an insane milliner, all of whom are incredibly unhelpful. Her pinafore, however, may be her most lasting legacy, and even though it’s been sullied by horrific sexy-fied versions in pre-packaged Halloween costumes, this Delpozo pinafore is okay for adults to wear.

Shop: Delpozo Layered Bicolor Pinafore, $1,623

Nellie Oleson, Little House on the Prairie

No matter how old nor evil she becomes, there is always one constant in prairie villainess Nellie Oleson’s life: her giant, obnoxious hair bows. Described by the Library of Congress as “wealthy, spoiled, and only happy when she is the center of attention,” Nellie is intensely manipulative, prissy, and the proud owner of the world’s most maniacal stinkface. A sort-of-but-maybe-not-really-unrelated fact is that the actress who played her in the long-running TV series, Alison Arngrim, is also impossible to differentiate from Game of Thrones child dictator Joffrey Baratheon, which just gave me an idea for my next piece.

Entry-Level Gucci Is Here

by Cam Wolf
allie

lol

No snakes, flowers, or butterflies; just a good T-shirt and a hoodie.

Gucci isn’t necessarily easy to love. The Italian brand’s new look — think Italian Renaissance masters reinterpreting modern-day pop culture — shepherded in by designer Alessandro Michele is embroidered with flowers, snakes, butterflies, and even Donald Duck. And even if one has the swagger to pull these items off, the price points (the uber-popular denim jacket will run you $6,000, for example) make getting in on one of the hottest brands of the moment incredibly difficult.

But finally, entry-level Gucci is here in the form of a T-shirt and hoodie that celebrities like Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Years and Years lead singer Olly Alexander, and the label’s designer have been wearing for months. The classic logo pieces released last week and are the easiest items to buy and wear for those who are interested in Michele’s fantasy but don’t want to go completely down the rabbit hole. They’re not cheap, just relatively so: $420 (nice) for a T-shirt and $1,200 for a hoodie.

Gucci faux-vintage T-shirt Photo: Gucci

Gucci is incredibly smart to cash in on the returning prominence of logos and a rising interest in men’s vintage — sites like The RealReal report the category has doubled for them in the past year alone. The basic items on sale now take the Italian luxury house’s funky vintage look and make it more approachable.

Surprisingly, even with all the winds blowing in the right direction, demand for vintage Gucci T-shirts isn’t up at vintage clothing shops like Beacon’s Closet, according to its founder and president Carrie Peterson.

However, Peterson sees the allure of classic items like this done by Gucci and says similar items would “sell in half a heartbeat… A tee like this can embody the idea of luxury, while still being super casual,” Peterson concurs. But she also notes this can only really work because it’s a storied brand like Gucci. “These brands are sort of the godparents of modern fashion and will always carry an authenticity that current designers can only strive to realize during their careers,” she explains.

Gucci logo sweatshirt Photo: Gucci

The magic of the Gucci tee, Peterson explains, is the facade of vintage that the tee’s crackled logo and brand’s history conjures. “It's a T-shirt, but then you throw the Gucci logo on it, and you've got something fake fancy, or maybe even actually fancy,” she says. And doesn’t that just really sum up all of Gucci’s new look?

So if you’re a person concerned with (a) passing inconspicuously through the crowds (b) your checking account or (c) both, this tee and hoodie are the most passive and inexpensive ways to get in on one of 2016’s most beloved brands

this is kind of amazing

The Codman Square Health Center is providing training on how to administer naloxone (also known by the trade name Narcan) at a session on Thursday, Nov. 10, starting at 6 p.m. at the health center's Black Box Theatre, 14 Epping St. in Dorchester.

Attendees will get a free kit of naloxone, which can revive an opioid overdose victim.
