not from the Onion

Bowing to the rally cries of its ardent devotees, Starbucks says that this year’s Pumpkin Spice Latte has been reformulated with the use of (gasp!) actual pumpkin. The Seattle-born coffee chain took a lot of heat ahead of PSL season last year thanks to the “scientific” ramblings of a blogger known as the Food Babe; […]

YO! Home Is a Convertible Apartment Concept

YO! Home Is a Convertible Apartment Concept

Simon Woodroffe, the man behind the Yotel hotel and the YO! Sushi chain, has come up with another clever concept to add to his resume – the YO! Home. Space is always a factor in living situations, especially these days, and that was the main drive behind the YO! Home. Woodroffe believes that luxury should be available to all, not just the rich and famous. That being said, this affordable concept is high on style and design while being smart about space.

Yo-Home-Covertible-bed

Clearly the most inventive aspect of the design is the bed. Woodroffe applied his knowledge of stage production and designed this mind-blowing bed with the principles of counter-weighting. A tiny motor moves the bed seamlessly up and down, but also, it takes minimal effort to move manually should the power go out. Besides being insanely cool, the bed design is extremely safe.

YO-Home-Convertible-Apartment-2

When sleep time is over, raise the bed and enjoy the U-shaped sofa.

YO-Home-Convertible-Apartment-3

When it’s time to eat, pop the dining table up electronically with the touch of a button. You sit on the floor, much like Japanese culture which inspired the design, and let your feet hang below. Once your done, lower the table and flip the seats closed.

YO-Home-Convertible-Apartment-4

The pocket kitchen is neatly tucked away be doors.

YO-Home-Convertible-Apartment-5

They embedded storage compartments within the floors. The apartment’s raised floor allows for the storage, as well as the sunken sofa and hidden dining area.

The Lexus Hoverboard Is Real…and Looks Very Difficult to Ride

by Gregory Han

The Lexus Hoverboard Is Real…and Looks Very Difficult to Ride

Get ready to be amazed. Lexus has made good on their promise, following up their much hyped teaser announcement made over a month ago with a full reveal of pro skater Ross McGouran riding atop of their seemingly miraculous hoverboard technology:

What looks like movie magic is actually gravity being held at bay using liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors integrated into the deck partnered with a specially modified skate park in Barcelona with a surface embedded with hundreds of magnets. The steam-emitting, maglev deck comes complete with rail slide grooving underneath, which skater Ross McGouran uses to full effect.

LexusHoverboard-1

But you’ll notice the Lexus Slide presents an extremely challenging ride, even for someone who rides skateboards professionally (or in the case of The Verge’s Sam Sheffer’s experience, like “trying to balance on a tightrope”). Without any friction or momentum for the rider to counteract, the body’s sense of equilibrium is challenged to maintain an upright position in much the same way it feels impossible to stand on an inflatable pool lounge for more than a couple of seconds. That all said, McGouran was able to accomplish some impressive feats riding the one-of-a-kind Lexus hoverboard, including riding across water and jumping over a car, hinting one day kids will be able to reenact Back to the Future and live in a world where gravity is optional.

LexusHoverboard2

Lexus also released a fascinating behind-the-scenes 5 minute video showing how difficult it was to execute an idea into an actual rideable hoverboard.

Prettocraig

i like this...

ultrafacts:

When famous Greek historian Herodotus, travelled to Persia around 450 B.C., he found a culture that deeply valued the wisdom that comes while being drunk. The Persians he encountered would make sure that particularly important arguments were debated both while sober and drunk, as only ideas that made sense in both states were truly worthwhile. This process went both ways: Arguments originally had while drunk would be debated again the next day in soberness, and dry arguments would be followed up with discussions over wine.

Abbotsford drunk driver mistakes cop car for cab, goes to jail

by Behdad Mahichi

This is great...An intoxicated driver sees several cops and pulls his car over so they don't catch him driving drunk. Then jumps out and gets in the back of what he thinks is a cab and says, "get me out of here buddy, theres cops everywhere." Unfortunately, it was a cop car and not a cab.

An unnamed intoxicated man in Abbotsford was caught drunk driving, as he then proceeded to ditch his car and enter a cop car, mistaking it for a cab. “Get me out of here buddy, there’s cops everywhere,” he said. Abbotsford police said he entered an idling cop car, and they were quick to take him […]

30 years ago, you could buy a Lifetime, Unlimited First-class Travel pass with American Airlines for $250,000. [x]

Steve Rothstein bought a golden ticket from American Airlines in 1987 — granting him a lifetime of unlimited travel.

He’s the man who flew too much.

He clocked more than 10 million miles and 10,000 flights. He used his power to fly hopeless strangers home, a friend to the Louvre, and a priest to Rome to meet the pope.

He hopped planes to other cities just for a baseball game or a sandwich.

Everybody, even American’s CEO, knew his name.

But in 2008, AA accused him of fraud and snatched his bottomless boarding pass.

A Norwegian Alcohol PSA Demonstrates How to Dock a Boat Like a Boss

by Glen Tickle

Sober...that guy looks pretty baked to me.

A new public service announcement by Norwegian NGO AV-OG-TIL demonstrates how to dock a boat like a boss. The video is meant to demonstrate that operating a boat is an activity that’s best done sober, but doing it with sweet sideburns and a mustache certainly looks like it helps.

A mutant protein found in one family appears to ward off heart...

Prettocraig

want...

A mutant protein found in one family appears to ward off heart disease despite a high-fat diet.

Cristoforo Pomaroli and Rosa Giovanelli had a son in 1780 in their small town in Italy, never knowing they bequeathed a genetic legacy that offers hope for reversing heart disease two centuries later.

The boy’s descendants in the northern Italian town of Limone inherited a genetic defect that protects them from the scourge of Western living–fatty deposits that clog the arteries.

The 38 lucky carriers have a simple mutation in a protein of so-called good cholesterol that lets them eat red meat, sausage and butter without artery-clogging deposits.

They range in age from the teens to nearly 90. And they have never worried about strokes or heart attacks since longevity runs in the family.

“They are almost all smokers. They eat like hell, the worst diet,” said the University of Milan’s Dr. Cesare Sirtori, who screened residents of Limone for the miracle mutation.
