Whimsical Scenes Created with Real Fish Heads

by Pinar

Parisian contemporary artist Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard does a little more than play with her food. The artist's ongoing body of work, known as Les Temps Modernes (translated as Modern Times), presents whimsical scenes featuring actual fish heads, which she later eats. In each eccentric frame, she simulates an absurd dramatization of human activities with the quirky visual aid of fish-headed puppets.

Becker-Echivard's configured photos reflect social and political issues with a sense of humor, mimicking the everyday lives of people. She is especially keen on recreating the assembly lines of laborers, commenting on our industrialized consumer society. She manages to address fairly serious topics in a playful manner. Dr. Didier Rouzeyrol poetically describes the artist's work: "German romanticism rescued by French lightness. // Sometimes innocence. // Sometimes intoxication. // The funny images, are never only funny. // The sad images, are never only sad. // There is always something else."

The Rockaways Artistic Playground: Playland Motel

This month’s Destination Design stays within the states and lands in New York’s own Rockaway Beach at a recently opened, campy destination called Playland Motel. Full of Beats, Eats, and Sleeps, this motel took an early 19th Century building and restored it with the help of twelve prominent designers and artists who designed individual rooms with their own aesthetic. The results are a designer motel catering to a younger crowd looking for a super fun getaway at the hotel, motel, Holiday Inn. (I dare you not to sing it.)

The Burrard’s Urban Courtyard Oasis in Downtown Vancouver

by Eudora

The Burrard in Downtown Vancouver

With summer in full swing, many of us are on the lookout for new hot spots to lounge, grab a drink and enjoy our beautiful Vancouver summer weather. So of course Modern Mix Vancouver was excited to attend the Palm Springs Tiki Romp, a 60’s themed party at The Burrard Motor Inn, showcasing its now fully licensed courtyard.

The Tiki Romp was like a fancy courtyard party scene straight out of a 1960’s movie. Guests were dressed to the nines, there were mouth-watering appetizers, pink cocktails, and glasses of wine (courteousy of Red Rooster) to enjoy, and of course a DJ spinning recognizable and unforgettable old school hits.

the burrard red rooster

Renovations to The Burrard were completed in 2011, restoring the hotel to its former glory and allowing it to offer guests an authentic 1960’s hotel experience: muted dress code and colors of hotel staff, brightly patterned walls, funky rooms, and even outdoor walkways covered with fake turf. Of course there have been some modern designs and upgrades added to the hotel, but overall, once you step foot into The Burrard, it feels like a blast from the past. And its courtyard is no exception.

Having also gone under renovations in 2011, The Burrard’s courtyard now looks vintage and a little old-fashioned with its colors and decor, but somehow still feels modern and tasteful. Tropical palm trees, lush greenery and a fountain are the focal point of the enclosed space that is overlooked by rows of hotel walkway and yellow, turquoise and grey hotel room doors. On a warm summer night, The Burrard’s courtyard is a great outdoor spot to relax with a cocktail in your hand and the feeling of a cool breeze in between the palm tree leaves.

the burrard motel

For a nostalgic courtyard and patio experience like no other in downtown Vancouver, make sure to visit The Burrard and head to the 2nd floor, where the fully licensed courtyard is open and happy to serve both guests and the public during the summer. For more information and to book special events, parties, work functions or receptions in the courtyard, check out The Burrard’s website.

Bombay Sapphire East Gin Wheel by AvroKO

Looking for a cool new home bar? Bombay Sapphire and design firm, AvroKO have teamed up to craft the limited edition Bombay Sapphire East Gin Wheel.

Bombay Sapphire East Gin Wheel by AvroKO in home furnishings Category

If you’re a gin lover, you know a thing or two about Bombay Sapphire. However, from the design side, AvroKO is responsible for several high-profile projects including LAVO, Beauty & Essex, Kid Robot, and Saxon & Parole in NYC. The firm uses storytelling as a way to create innovative designs and transformative experiences.

Inspired by the “Lazy Susan” turntable, the new Gin Wheel is handcrafted from exotic walnut. Its base – on which the main body spins on – is a plate made of brushed stainless steel. The Gin Wheel’s design celebrates the classic nature of the Gin & Tonic cocktail (of which it’s meant to celebrate!) while boasting an imaginative and refined aesthetic.

The main body opens to high quality bar tools, glassware, removable cutting boards, coasters and custom made aluminum tongs that double as a locking mechanism. There’s also storage for ice and garnish for your cocktails.

Pat C. Klein Turns Facebook Into A Board Game

by Jaime Derringer

Pat C. Klein Turns Facebook Into A Board Game

We’ve seen designy board games here before but this takes designing a game to another level. Graphic designer Pat C. Klein created Facebook: The Board Game to “persuade people to stop using the internet forever.” I suppose if you’re playing a board game, at least you’re being social and interacting with humans.

Pat C. Klein Turns Facebook Into A Board Game in home furnishings Category

He explains:

As a young person living in the digital age, I feel as though the internet is affecting our ability to communicate with one another.

Research done by Stanford University has indicated that social networking sites like Facebook can increase loneliness, depression and insecurity.

Facebook: The Board Game was created as a response to this. The idea is that instead of engaging with Facebook on your computer or phone, you can arrange to meet up with friends, have a few drinks and play in real life.

Some of my favorite parts of the game: You land on “Unattended PC!” and you have to “Reveal something embarrassing about the next person to leave the room” and “Tag a player who you’d like to drink.”

SPES Saturday: Cool Down This Summer in Stanley Park

by Guest Author
Prettocraig

@dani - apparently there are 5 beavers that live at Beaver Lake, though I have never seen a Beaver and I am not entirely sure they exist.

© 2004-2013 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.

StanleyParkEcologyThis post has been contributed by Dan Straker, Dipl. Tech., B.A., Co-Existing with Coyotes Coordinator with the Stanley Park Ecology Society (“SPES”). I have been following SPES since I moved into the West End almost eight years ago and I recently became a member. I wanted to offer the team an opportunity to share their news, events, and work so I have created “SPES Saturday” where they will be contributing stories with my audience once a month.

Cool Down This Summer in Stanley Park

If you’ve been in Vancouver for the past couple weeks, you’ve probably noticed that summer is in full swing. There’s never been a better time to cool off in the shady forests and beaches of Stanley Park and learn about some of the amazing wildlife that live in them, many of which are doing their best to keep cool themselves. Join our Beavers, Brooks, and Bogs* walk (Sunday July 21 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm) and learn about the wetlands and streams around Beaver Lake that play such an important part in the local ecosystem, providing clean water and a safe place to call home for many species of plants and animals, including our very own beavers.

Mark White - Beaver at Beaver Lake
A Beaver at Beaver Lake in Stanley Park. Photo credit: Mark White.

Beaver Lake is now home to five beavers that work tirelessly in hopes that they will keep the water level in Beaver Lake high enough for the winter by damming the flow to Beaver Creek. Beavers love lakes and are natural ecosystem engineers. In fact, beavers are the only animal other than humans that have built a structure that is visible from outer space! They work so hard because they need an aquatic environment to store their winter food, which mainly consists of the outer layers of woody branches and trees. That way, when the lake freezes and they are sitting cozy in their lodge, they can use their secret underwater passage and grab a quick snack from the bottom of the lake without having to expose themselves to predators or having to spend a lot of energy, much like a squirrel stores nuts for the winter.

If cooling down in the shade of the forest isn’t for you, you can always head to the beach instead and find out how intertidal creatures keep cool. There is a whole world waiting to be discovered that you can only see for a few hours a day while the tide is out. If you’ve ever wondered where beach crabs come from or how seaweed holds on without roots, you’ll find out on our Life at the Beach Walk (August 4th from 11:00am to 3:00pm, free to drop in).

Maybe you just want to be cool, like the bald eagles of Stanley Park, which know a thing or two about playing it cool. We now have five nesting pairs of bald eagles in Stanley Park and I don’t think anyone can deny that they are one of the ‘coolest’ animals around. With the help of volunteers, SPES monitors bald eagle nests all over Vancouver, read our June update to find out the locations of these nests in the Park.

Currently the young eagles of the Park are learning how to fly and hunt, and they better learn quick too, since they and their parents will soon leave their nests behind in search for better hunting grounds at the end of July and early August. They will be looking for tasty salmon and won’t return to the Park again until October. Join SPES for a walk and talk all about Stanley Park’s Eagles* (July 14 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm).

If you want to support a non-profit organization that makes a difference for wildlife and people in Stanley Park, please make a donation or become a member of SPES. For more information visit the Stanley Park Ecology Society website. Follow SPES on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates.

*Nature Program Fees: $5 for SPES members, children and seniors. $10 for non-members. We recommend pre-registering for programs due to popularity of our programs. For more information on SPES events, please visit our events calendar.

NHL Announces Heritage Classic at BC Place: Canucks vs Senators

by Rebecca Bollwitt

© 2004-2013 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.

The NHL’s Heritage Classic series is heading to BC Place on March 2, 2014 as the Vancouver Canucks will face the Ottawa Senators in the first regular season game to be played in a retractable roof stadium. Earlier this year five other cities were rumoured to host Heritage Classics and the Vancouver date was confirmed today.

“With one of the world’s great facilities as the setting, and one of the world’s most scenic cities as the backdrop, the 2014 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at BC Place in Vancouver will honour hockey’s Canadian heritage,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a release. “With the excitement, the entertainment, the competitiveness and the fun of this game, the Canucks and Senators will create special memories for hockey fans everywhere.”

“The NHL Heritage Classic allows our sport to further celebrate the history of the game while doing so in a unique venue,” Canucks president and GM Mike Gillis said. “We look forward to showcasing our city, province, team and fans this upcoming March.”

The 2014 edition of the Heritage Classic follows the 2003 game in Edmonton between the Oilers and the Montreal Canadiens, and the 2011 contest in Calgary between the Flames and Habs. [Source: CBC]

While I would hardly consider BC Place an “outdoor” venue (it would be like calling a car with a sunroof a dune buggy) its capacity of 59,841 will make it a very exciting game to attend. The most entertaining sporting events I have ever witnessed in person have been at BC Place so I hope that the enthusiasm that fans bring to Whitecaps and BC Lions matches will fill the stadium for this match-up on ice.

Poll

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

With regards to the match-up against Ottawa, the Heritage Classic’s March 2, 2014 date will be just shy of the 99th anniversary of the Canucks defeating the Senators to win the Stanley Cup at Denman Arena in Vancouver.

Further details including information on ticketing for season-ticket holders for each team and national broadcast information will be released shortly.

Dwell on Design 2013 Exclusive House Tour: Strimling House

The last stop on the Canyons & Valley Tour on the Dwell Home Tours is the Strimling House in Encino, California. Built in 1964 by one of Los Angeles’ most renowned architects, Ray Kappe, the home has been recently restored by interior designer Sarah Rosenhaus, who paid careful attention to the original details that make the house unique.

The residence boasts many of Kappe’s signature elements, like redwood paneling and beams, floor-to-ceiling windows, and cantilevered rooms. Rosenhaus took notice and returned the interior walls to their original colors and refinished the kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them. Other rooms, like the bathrooms, were renovated to bring them up to date.

Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise™ Ambassador Profile: Chef Ned Bell

by Bob Kronbauer
Vancouver Is Awesome is a proud sponsor of Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise™ program, created in 2005 to address overfishing, the single biggest threat facing our oceans today. What started as a local conservation initiative has grown into a nation-wide program with over 480 partners spanning coast to coast.

With the leadership of passionate ocean ambassadors, the Aquarium has been able to turn the tides to help conserve our oceans and the aquatic life that depend on them. In this bi-weekly series we introduce you to some of these Ocean Wise ambassadors in Vancouver.

Words: Charlene Chiang, Vancouver Aquarium

EXECUTIVE CHEF NED BELL
FOUR SEASONS HOTEL VANCOUVER | YEW RESTAURANT
Proud Ocean Wise chef partner since 2004

Executive Chef Ned Bell shares his commitment to aquatic life with a family at Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver. Photo: Vancouver Aquarium.

Why is Ocean Wise important to you?
Because I want and need healthy oceans for my sons to enjoy the culture of seafood, globally and locally.

What is your favorite Ocean Wise seafood and how do you like it prepared?
Albacore tuna and B.C. spot prawns. I like it all ways: raw, marinated, grilled and roasted.

When did you discover your love of food?
At the age of 12 when I started cooking for my brother and sister.

What would you consider to be your favorite kitchen gadget?
My palate.

Sweet or savory?
Pickled! ;)

What’s the most amazing dish you’ve ever tasted?
Raw B.C. spot prawns fresh from the waters off of Vancouver aboard Organic Ocean’s boat!

Which establishment do you most frequent in Vancouver?
Zest Japanese. Milano Coffee, Bella Gelateria, Nicli and Via Teverre Pizza.

If you could turn back time, which unsustainable seafood choice would you bring back from the brink?
I would change the way we consume and harvest Tiger prawns. The world’s most consumed seafood item and the worst possible choice. The planet is addicted to them and it is the worst possible drug.

What would be your perfect last supper?
Sushi created by my friend Yoshi at Zest.

With whom would you enjoy it?
My sons: Max and Fin.

Ned Bell just completed a 900-kilometre bicycle trip across Vancouver Island with the goal of increasing awareness about the sustainability of our food system. A long-time supporter of local farmers, fishermen, artisans and food producers of all kinds, Bell’s focus has recently become more tightly honed on making food choices that help improve the health of our oceans, lakes and rivers. Ned is an avid Vancouver Aquarium Ocean Wise supporter and helped lead the organization of National Sustainable Seafood Day.

Bestie Currywurst | Vancouver Chinatown

Chinatown’s new sausage parlour, inspired by German street food culture, has finally opened after much anticipation. I tried currywurst for the first time a couple months ago on the mean streets of Recklinghausen in Germany and was thoroughly delighted. The dish is a 1949 Berlin invention born from having an abundance of leftover curry powder from British soldiers after WWII.

It’s served as a proper German bratwurst pork sausage, steam then fried, sliced and seasoned with hot curried ketchup (on top of fresh cut fries). Here, we were served sausage and sauerkraut (above),  another popular offshoot of the classic dish. Bestie offers four choices of wurst ranging from classic pork thuringer, southern BBQ turkey, Turkish lamb, or veggie wurst.

My highlight was their warm, baked pretzel board (another German staple) served with stinky cheese sauce and house mustard. It was certainly a fresh and delicious treat. Unfortunately, their deep fryer was on the fritz so we didn’t get to enjoy our currywurst served classically over hand cut fries.

Bestie’s design, interior, and overall branding is striking with a stark white and wood design decorated in a vibrant, nostalgic colour scheme, adorned with a cuckoo clock and other knickknacks. The locally sourced sausage, selection of craft beers, and specialty sodas rounded out the eatery impressively.

Let’s hope Bestie is the start of more original and transplanted/imported food culture coming to the city. I hope the trend catches on and they work out some of the kinks. I want those fries.

wow...i have been resistant to giving up cable purely for live sports, but if this comes to canada with TSN I am in!

Apple TV Just Got HBO Go and WatchESPN

Apple TV just plugged two very big holes in its streaming content: HBO and ESPN. The streaming box will now play content from the HBO Go and WatchESPN apps. And that's good news for just about everyone involved.

VIDEO: Side-by-side Skytrain trips, 27 years ago and TODAY

by Bob Kronbauer

Here’s something you might not have expected looking at a 4 minute video clip of a Skytrain ride 27 years ago next to the same trip today: there are actually more trees now. More towers and development and humans, which the urbanist crowd will enjoy seeing, and with it more greenery.

Satechi Portable Humidifier Turns Any Water Bottle into a Humidifier

by Adam Dachis

I am not a big humidifier person, but cool idea

When you think of a humidifier, you probably picture a fairly large device filled with water that you plug in and keep in a corner. Those traditional options don't work so well when you need to move them around and require a bit of effort to clean. The Satechi Portable USB Humidifier just attaches to any water bottle and gets power from any USB port of charger.

A look inside @TELUS Garden Part 1: A New Downtown Shortcut!

by Bob Kronbauer
Prettocraig

@dani - more public space!

In this very special 4 part series we’re taking you inside one of V.I.A.’s longtime Community Sponsor’s upcoming downtown headquarters and residential towers, TELUS Garden. Making up an entire city block bounded in by Robson, Georgia, Seymour and Richards, it’s currently under construction with residents, TELUS and other businesses all expected to be moved in by 2015.

The scope of the project is pretty amazing in itself. There will be 428 units in the 53-storey residential tower which sold out in a few short weeks. There will also be 500,000 square feet of new office space built in what will be the first LEED Platinum office tower based on the more aggressive 2009 standards in North America. Not only will it house new downtown residents and TELUS corporate headquarters but it’ll also draw in other jobs to our city with other tenants leasing space. There’s an incredibly cool district energy utility going in, which is similar to the one that I wrote about HERE, where waste heat will be recycled back into the buildings. But beyond all of the stuff which is great for the big picture of Vancouver and for the planet, one of the things that excites me the most is the renewed laneway.

You know all of those inviting alleyways in downtown Vancouver that you just love to walk down, day or night? The ones with a nice place to stop for coffee and maybe a flower shop that you find yourself drawn to? Me neither. Because there aren’t any. Until now, of course. Take a look at this rendering below that shows an aerial view of what’s to be built, and pay special attention to the salmon coloured portion; that’s the laneway that will be your new shortcut when you’re in the area, when you’re heading to the arenas or just passing by. Of course as pictured above there’ll be a public plaza on the corner, retail shops, cafes and restaurants at street level on the main streets that bound the project but within it, in the laneway, will also be 3 retail units.

It’ll have some shops, it’ll be well kept and it’ll be a great shortcut. And to add to the awesomeness they’ve brought in renowned artist, Martin Boyce, to install a project called Beyond the Sea, Against the Sun in it. Made up of three continuous chains of hanging lanterns that converge at the point where the Richards Street lane meets the alleyway running from Robson through to Georgia, these colourful constellations will encourage people to be drawn in to the space.

Below are prototypes of the geometric lanterns which Boyce says have drawn inspiration from the leaf on Jan and Joel Martel‘s abstract trees of 1925. I can’t wait to stroll down the laneway, coffee in hand, on my way through.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this series where we’ll be introducing you to some details about the LEED office tower and the all new district energy utility!

Drink Beer for Big Ideas, Coffee to Get Them Done

by Tessa Miller

Drink Beer for Big Ideas, Coffee to Get Them Done

I didn’t know what I was going to write about today. When this happens, normally I grab a coffee to help get the ideas flowing, but for the last few days in Montreal, no one’s been allowed to drink the water due to a bacteria leakage. This also means: no coffee. So instead, I grabbed the next best thing to help me get going: a beer.
