Created by Tel Aviv-based design firm Peleg Design, the Yolkfish is a clever kitchen tool designed like a fish that slurps up yolks as means to separate them from egg whites. 12 photos that reveal why Target Canada is in big trouble
Target opened more than 100 stores in Canada last year.
But the discount chain’s expansion up north has been a bumpy one. Company executives admitted that inventory didn’t sell as quickly as they expected, which hurt profits.
Wall Street analyst Brian Sozzi at Belus Capital Advisors recently published photos of Target Canada that indicate why the business could be struggling.

His images portray understocked shelves and disorganized displays.
Take this freezer, which is looks understocked and empty:
“Look at the dominant clearance signs on the cheap chic items Target is known for in the U.S.,” Sozzi writes.
This emptiness is also apparent in the beauty section:
And in home goods, one of the greatest triumphs of Target U.S.
“It looks as if workers are being told to push up merchandise on the shelves because the store is unsure on when new shipments will arrive,” Sozzi writes.
These empty shelves are pretty bad in the apparel section.
“Why have a display wall at all?” he asks.
Where there should be multiple rows of products, Target Canada is thinly displaying just one or two bottles of detergent at a time:
The shoe display is no better:
Meanwhile, the clearance section offers products for 90% off. ”That type of discount is alarming at a newly opened business,” Sozzi said.
Some shelves, like those in the paper towel aisle, appear empty:
And that emptiness even extends to food:
“One almost is overcome with this creepy feeling (at least we are given our close tracking of the situation) that Target will go the way of many U.S. brands that ventured into Canadian retailing…extinct,” Sozzi writes.

Designer Bicycles from Martone Cycling Co.
Designer Lorenzo Martone began a lifelong obsession with bicycles when he received his very first one at Christmas in 1985. Thanks to Santa, that day was permanently etched into his brain and so was the love of his first bike he called “Fina” (Portuguese for skinny). 28 years later, Martone Cycling Co. was born as a fashion and design driven bike company with city bikes that make a bold statement.
The first collection has been released, each with a signature red chain and basket – one style, available in a men’s or women’s frame, and each comes in five colors: red, gold, white, silver, and black.
The bike isn’t all about looks, though. Each bike is powered by their innovate duomatic gear system which adjusts automatically and changes gears based on the speed you’re cruising at.

Clubbing as Described to Investors
PrettocraigFrom the Prospectus of an IPO for a Club:
“Clubbing is a popular night time activity which has evolved from discotheques of the 1970s into a modern form of social gathering with lively music, elaborate lighting and a dance floor, supplemented by both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages,” is the prospectus’ hilariously wooden intro.
WSJ gleefully continues quoting from the document: “The aura and atmosphere of the modern clubbing scene is filled with images of people moving in unison to the beat of synthesized remixed dance and electronic music spun out [sic] by a DJ perched upon an elevated stage.”
Most of Magnum’s revenues, the club says, come from selling drinks, “generally known as alcoholic beverages served by glass and prepared by bartenders mixing different alcohol and ingredients.”

Top 10 William Shatner Moments Through Time
PrettocraigI didn't watch any, but thought I would share given the McGill connection.
The PuSh International Performing Arts Festival presents L.A. Party / An Evening with William Shatner Asterisk, a double-bill evening by acclaimed New York theatre artist Phil Soltonoff, from January 21-25 at SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.
In An Evening with William Shatner Asterisk sound and video clips of Captain James T. Kirk of the original Star Trek series are stitched together to create a meticulously catalogued montage. Like an oracle, the young Shatner beams from the screen to ‘speak’ about art, science and the human condition of the future. This theatre conceived for a post-human world. (Shatner’s likeness and images were used with the blessings of the big man himself.)
So, to get us all in the mood for an evening featuring our favourite Canadian acting icon, here’s a compilation of our 10 favourite on-screen William Shatner moments through the times.
1. Handsome Shatner sees a plane gremlin, loses his mind.
2. Official “Ponder the Mystery” music video. It’s a mystery, indeed.
3. Is there anything this man won’t flog for money? ‘Cause insurance and deep fried turkey aren’t on that list.
4. Neither are frozen vegetables.
5. This 1978 gem. Shatner broods for the screen and ‘sings’ Rocket Man.
6. NFB + Shatner + national anthem + Governor General Awards = Zenith of Canadian zeitgeist.
7. Why does this man not have an acting school named after him yet? We propose Shat’s School in Subtlety.
8. Star Trek Season 4, Episode 12: Kirk and Spock Holiday in Hawaii.
9. Glorious, for so many mockable reasons.
10. Finally, someone please explain why we’re turned on by this? (Also, there is literally a gong in this show.)
See Shatner’s likeness in all its kookiness in An Evening with William Shatner Asterisk (double billed with L.A. Party) by Phil Soltonoff at the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival. Better than lining up at Comic Con.

Oxfam: 85 richest people on earth have as much money as half the world’s population
PrettocraigWhile I am all for pure capitalism...this can't be good.
As the rich and powerful gather in Davos, Switzerland this week, a new report reveals that the 85 richest people on the globe have as much money as half the world’s population.
The tiny elite of multibillionaires, who could fit into a single train carriage, have accumulated fortunes (a total of $1.7-trillion) equal to the wealth of the world’s poorest 3.5-billion people.
Oxfam’s “Working for the Few” report, urges the World Economic Forum, which meets in Davos beginning Tuesday this week, to make a commitment “to counter the growing tide of economic inequality.”
Related
The report says almost half of the world’s wealth — $110-trillion — is now owned by 1% of the population. That’s 65 times the total wealth of the poorest half of the world’s population.
“It is staggering that in the 21st Century, half of the world’s population own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all sit comfortably in a single train carriage,” Winnie Byanyima, Oxfam’s executive director, said in a press release.
The international charity is concerned the growing economic gap will distort government policy as the rich gain influence over policy makers. The report also includes a survey that shows there is a growing perception that laws are skewed in favour of the rich.
“The consequences include the erosion of democratic governance, the pulling apart of social cohesion and the vanishing of equal opportunities for all,” it says.
In the United States, the wealthiest 1% have captured 95% of growth since 2009, while the bottom 90% of the world’s population have become poorer, the report says. The 1% also increased their share of income in 24 out of 26 countries between 1980 and 2012.
In India, for example, the number of billionaires have increased from six to 61 in the past decade, while spending on the country’s poorest remains “remarkably low.”
In Europe, the combined wealth of the 10 richest citizens — 217-billion euros — exceeds the total cost of stimulus pumped into the eurozone’s economy between 2008 and 2010 — 200-billion euros.
Oxfam estimates that $18.5-trillion, more than the GDP of the United States, is hidden, largely untaxed, in offshore tax havens around the world.
The report also says that tax rates for the richest people have fallen in 29 of the 30 countries since the 1970s, “meaning that in many places the rich not only get more money but also pay less tax on it.”
The organization is calling on the powerful gathered at Davos to commit to a series of pledges including not using tax havens, making public all their investments and ensuring a living wage at the companies they own.

BlackBerry Ltd wins order for 1,000 smartphones from German tech firm
Prettocraig1,000 phones = 5% Increase in shares?
BlackBerry Ltd., seeking to show that its handset business can still attract customers, said a German technology company is upgrading to its Enterprise Service 10 system and will purchase more than 1,000 phones.
Datev, a provider of software and technology services to tax advisers, auditors and lawyers, is a longtime customer and cited the security of BlackBerry devices in its decision to stick with the technology, according to a statement today. Terms of the contract weren’t disclosed.
“Our employees use their mobile devices to conduct confidential business, and require a reliable smartphone that can secure the transmission of business data,” said Wolfgang Fischer, who oversees the mobile technology group at Nuremberg- based Datev.
BlackBerry’s share of the smartphone market tumbled to less than 2% last year, spurring speculation that the company would stop selling devices and focus on software and services. Instead, Chief Executive Officer John Chen forged a partnership with Foxconn Technology Group to outsource much of the company’s production.
Chen said in an interview this month that BlackBerry would refocus on keyboard-equipped phones — the kind popular with lawyers and professionals — following weak sales of its touch- screen models.

1,200 folks in the DTES served organic moose hotdogs, duck chili and venison stew by Canuck David Booth
Prettocraigwhile I am not a fan of hunting this is an interesting story...
In this special edition of our HIGH FIVING CELEBRITIES series we bring you the Vancouver Canucks’ David Booth and our friend Mark Brand from Save On Meats. This past Sunday they served up moose hotdogs, duck chili and venison stew to 1,200 hungry folks in the Downtown Eastside. If that selection of food sounds strange to you, then the fact that David is an avid hunter should shed some light on it. The food served – 600 pounds of wild game meat – was hunted by David, his friend, Adam Hill (who both organize Hunting for Humanity) and other hunters in BC.
High five, dudes!
The meal was supported by A Better Life Foundation, Save On Meats, Unique Storage & Organizers and of course Mark and David, providing a high quality, organic meal (wild meat = no hormones/steroids/anything). “This was a great opportunity to share a hot, healthy meal to those in need,” said Booth. “We recognized that those in need can be forgotten once the Christmas season is over and wanted to try to help them through the cold winter months.”.
