500 Elephants Are Being Moved By Crane And You Need To See This

by Jason Wells

Wildlife officials in Malawi have launched a massive effort to tranquilize and move 500 elephants to a larger preserve.

Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi / AP

The African elephants are being tranquilized by dart from helicopters at Liwonde National Park, which is home to Malawi’s largest population of 800 threatened elephants.

The tranquilized elephants are then loaded by crane onto trucks before being hauled 185 miles away to to Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, according to organizers of the $1.6 million project.

Moving the multi-ton elephants is a delicate process that will take several phases, organizers say.

Tsvangirayi Mukwazhi / AP

African Parks, which manages all three Malawian reserves, is moving 500 elephants this month and August, and again then next year when the large transport vehicles can maneuver the rugged terrain during the dry winter, the Associated Press reported.

The so-called "surplus" elephants from the Liwonde and Majete parks will backfill the population at Nkhotakota, where poachers have practically wiped them out.

Conservationists are racing to use "human-induced migration" as part of an effort to protect the threatened African elephant population, where poaching and human encroachment on the continent have had severe impacts.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, there just an estimated 470,000 of the elephants left in the wild, down from several million last century.

Conservationists traveled with the elephants to monitor their breathing during the long trek. None were reported injured during the initial phase.

The new elephant population will be first introduced to a 16,000-hectare sanctuary at Nkhotakota before being released over time into the larger reserve. Organizers have plans to relocate another 1,500 animals from a variety of species to also help repopulate reserve.

People Think The "Rickroll" In Melania Trump's Speech Was Intentional Sabotage

by Ema O'Connor
Philip.paulsson

That is hilarious.

“He will never, ever, give up … and he will never, ever let you down!”

Since Melania Trump spoke at the Republican National Convention Monday night, people have noticed some, uh, ~issues~ with her speech.

youtube.com

Did you catch that? Maybe with some music this time...

youtube.com

A quick explainer for those who have never been "Rickrolled" in their lives (lucky you!): Rickrolling is an internet-originated practice of sneaking an excerpt from Rick Astley's 1987 hit "Never Gonna Give You Up," into unexpected places.

The actual lyrics in question are:
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down

LOL nice

The Late Show host dressed as the Hunger Games character and mocked Donald Trump before being escorted offstage by security.

After being deposited back on the convention floor, Colbert appeared to be filming with a camera crew, so there was hope we might get to see a full version of his antics.

Iraqi Refugees Were Dragged From A Church After Seeking Sanctuary From Deportation

by Rachael Krishna
Philip.paulsson

LOL I can't watch the video at work, but I just picture them repeatedly yelling "SANCTUARY!" in Arabic as they're being dragged out of the church.

Two pastors had offered the men immunity according to the ancient practice of church sanctuary.

Police in Reykjavík, Iceland were caught on video Tuesday dragging Iraqi refugees out of a church.

The footage, captured by Icelandic publication Stundin, shows the police entering the Church of Laugarnes to retrieve 16-year-old Ali Nasir and 30-year-old Majed.

Three special Lego figurines are currently orbiting Jupiter

Philip.paulsson

Haha nice.

NASA's Juno spacecraft is orbiting the giant planet Jupiter, having survived a harrowing journey through radiation and dust to enter into orbit on Monday night. The spacecraft is technically uncrewed, but there are three passengers of sorts.

A trio of Lego figurines are aboard the spacecraft, each representing important discoveries about the largest planet in our solar system. The Lego pieces are crafted in the likeness of Galileo Galilei, who discovered four of Jupiter's moons — Europa, Io, Callisto and Ganymede — in  1610, the Roman god Jupiter and Jupiter's wife Juno.

"These [minifigures] are made by the LEGO company in a special agreement with NASA," said Scott Bolton, the mission's principal investigator, in a statement. They don't look like typical Legos, though, for good reason.

"They're made out of spacecraft-grade aluminum," Bolton said.

According to a Lego spokeswoman, the three pieces were milled out of a single block of aluminum, which was chosen in order to allow the figures to withstand the extreme temperatures encountered during the journey.

"Another consideration was choosing a non-magnetic metal so that they wouldn’t interfere with other equipment," the spokeswoman told Mashable in an email.

The Lego pieces have set records for the fastest-traveling Legos on record. The spacecraft blasted away from Earth in 2011, and reached Jupiter five years later, on July 4.

The Lego pieces are part of a joint agreement between the Lego company and NASA that is aimed at engaging the public in science education. The space agency is encouraging the public to use Lego pieces to construct models of the future of space exploration, and submit these to NASA as part of a competition.

"We put these LEGO minifigures on board Juno in order to inspire and motivate and engage children, to have them share in the excitement of space exploration and reaching for the best goals that you can," Bolton said.

The Juno figure holds a magnifying glass to signify her search for the truth, while her husband holds a lightning bolt. Galileo holds both a model of the planet and his telescope.

These Lego pieces are not the first to explore space, however. In 2011, for example, astronauts aboard the International Space Station played with sets of their own.

Apple's new patent could disable your iPhone camera

Philip.paulsson

Won't see this on Android...

Apple's latest patent, granted yesterday, reveals that the company is exploring ways to block its own iPhone cameras from taking photos and video in certain contexts.

Why would Apple want to thwart iPhone users from using their own devices to shoot video and take pictures?

The technology could prove useful in specific settings. For instance, it could be used at a concert where taking photos and video breaks venue rules and artists and concert promoters have a vested interest in protecting onstage performances from pirated recordings.

Apple's patent would allow infrared technology to be used to temporarily deactivate iPhone cameras in these locations.

apple-concert-patent-background.jpg

Apple/U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

In the patent, Apple's describes how the technology would work: "An infrared emitter can be located in areas where picture or video capture is prohibited, and the emitter can generate infrared signals with encoded data that includes commands to disable the recording functions of devices. An electronic device can then receive the infrared signals, decode the data and temporarily disable the device's recording function based on the command."

Disabling photo and video capability is sure to be controversial among iPhone users who want expanded, not limited, phone functionality.

But the technology could have other applications as well. For instance, imagine you're wandering a museum exhibit. The technology could pick up infrared data from an infrared emitter nearby and automatically display information -- such as curated audio, video or text -- on your phone to give you more context about the object or painting in front of you.

apple-museum-patent-background.jpg

Apple/U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

The patent also raises other, potentially serious concerns: What if the technology was leveraged to block photo and video at a political protest or another sensitive event, making recording of these events impossible?

In any democracy, there are countless situations in which rules against cellphone recording may come into conflict with civic activism.

Take last week's sit-in by House Democrats demanding action on gun control. Since the House was officially in recess, cable channel C-SPAN saw their video feed go dark. Scrambling, Democrats used their own phones to live stream the sit-in on platforms like Facebook and Periscope -- breaking the rules of the House that forbid cellphone recording. Overall, more than one million people watched the sit-in unfold, prompting what House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called "a debate heard round the world." Such action wouldn't be possible if the newly-patented technology was in place.

Similarly, repressive regimes could potentially use it to block the public from seeing and hearing protests from opponents they wanted to shut down.

Apple did not respond to a request for comment on the new patent from CBS Sacramento affiliate KOVR.

‘Secretary Clinton Is A Different Person Than Donald Trump,’ Says Bernie Sanders In Ringing Endorsement

PORTSMOUTH, NH—Putting aside the policy disagreements and occasional acrimony that marked the pair’s heated, months-long presidential primary election contest, Vermont senator Bernie Sanders offered a ringing endorsement of Hillary Clinton today by stating that she is a different person than Donald Trump. “Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are separate people,” said Sanders, throwing his support behind Clinton in a rousing 25-second speech in which he praised the former secretary of state as someone who has a different name than the Republican nominee and who is altogether a distinct being from him. “Donald Trump is one person and Hillary Clinton is another person. They are not the same person.” Sanders then reportedly concluded the resounding endorsement by stating that “Hillary Clinton is a choice for president,” before exhaling audibly and walking quietly off the stage.

Silicon Valley turns dark as it wraps up a third season

by Joe Mullin
Philip.paulsson

Such a good show. SPOILER ALERT don't read this if you haven't finished the latest season.

(credit: HBO)

In the final episode of Silicon Valley’s third season, Pied Piper’s master BS artist Erlich Bachman is broke. But Bachman—who failed at running an incubator and then failed utterly to show up his enemies with his Bachmanity project—has a gift for spin. Somehow he turns a modest “uptick” in the number of daily active users into an incredible windfall for the company as well as the season’s most elaborate dick joke.

Problem is, the uptick is fake. Business manager Jared couldn’t face the possibility that Pied Piper—and his idol, founder Richard Hendricks—will soon collapse. In the series’ biggest twist, we discovered where the “uptick” came from—a crowded, smoky click farm in Bangladesh. The masterful sequence at the end of episode nine shows a Bangladeshi worker’s morning commute, biking his way through the crowded streets of one of the world’s poorest countries. There’s no hip music as the episode ends, just the quiet clacking of hundreds of keyboards. Is this how a bunch of coddled California techies define success?

Farming for fun and profit

The thing is, Jared isn’t the only one who knows about the scam. Pied Piper founder Richard (Thomas Middlebrook) knows, too. Actually, it turns out a lot of people know. In a hilarious sequence from the final episode, Dinesh and Gilfoyle congratulate Richard while Dinesh "accidentally” drops a flash drive with a "zombie script" that would "randomize user actions," making “fake users in click farms absolutely indistinguishable from real users." Richard is on the verge of being corrupted, and they love him for it. Finally, they have a boss ready to swim with the sharks. The click farm scam is some "serial killer level shit," Dinesh tells him. "I think I finally respect you as a CEO," Gilfoyle says.

Firefly Trails and the Summer Milky Way

Firefly Trails and the Summer Milky Way A camera fixed low to a tripod on a northern summer's eve captured the series of images used in this serene, southern Ontario skyscape. The lakeside view frames our fair galaxy above calm water and the night's quintessential luminous apparitions. But the trails of light are neither satellite glint, nor meteor flash, nor auroral glow. In the wide-field composite constructed with four consecutive 15 second exposures, a pulsing firefly enters at the right, first wandering toward the camera, then left and back toward the lake, the central Milky Way rising in the background.
