Road Not Taken review: The year’s best grief simulator
Philip.paulssonHuh, just downloaded this the other day because it was free on PS4 for gold accounts. Will have to actually play it now!

When the game designers at Spry Fox named their latest puzzle game after Robert Frost’s most famous poem, we didn’t expect much depth or inspiration from the source material. Frankly, Frost’s The Road Not Taken, while sweet and lyrical, hides little under the surface to work with, particularly from a gaming perspective. Pick between one of two roads? Even text adventures gave players the choice of north, south, east, or west.
Thankfully, the game’s title is misleading, at least at first blush. Road Not Taken’s hand-drawn world and puzzly play rarely boil down to obvious, binary choices. The game revolves around a really refreshing spin on the well-trodden “match three” puzzle genre (which is to be expected from the designers who pulled off a similar, stellar feat in 2010’s Triple Town).
But there’s a point to the game’s name. As players get a feel for RNT’s pace—with randomly generated puzzles, a constant flow of new things to interact with, and heavily ramping difficulty—they slowly come to grips with the game’s very difficult core. Not in terms of how hard or clever the game is, mind you, but the fact that this is a puzzle game about death, disappointment, and family. Spry Fox treats that somber quality with elegance and simplicity, meaning the game is a wonder to play, but rarely do puzzle games (Tetris, Candy Crush) include death as a major feature. RNT stands out because of how it embraces that design choice, a fact that really makes all the difference.

See the world in a whole new light.
John Poppleton uses UV body paint to create scenes of nature and space, and then brings them to life under a black light.

Black lights emit UV rays that aren't visible to the human eye. UV paint on the other hand contains phosphors that glow when illuminated by black light's UV frequency.

Poppleton told BuzzFeed, "It actually started out as just black light photography."

These Pictures Show Exactly How British Soldiers Kit Has Changed Over The Last Thousand Years
Philip.paulssonCool stuff. Also, in 1916 they still carried around a mace??
Despite almost everything changing, some items have remained the same across centuries.
Huscarl, Battle of Hastings, 1066.

Soldiers carried a variety of weapons for different purposes, but also had keepsakes, like some dice, and most interestingly, a spoon. Every British soldier's kit featured in the project includes a spoon.

One British tactic that came to the fore at Agincourt was the planting of wooden stakes to defend against cavalry, which meant soldiers were carrying wooden stakes.

Watch great white sharks trying to eat an underwater robot
Philip.paulssonAwesome video.
If you’re one of those people who doesn't like having your picture taken, here's some dubious advice courtesy of a great white shark: try to eat the camera.
Discovery Channel's website recently featured a series of videos of sharks inspecting, intimidating, and even attacking an underwater vehicle that was filming the marine predators in their native habitat.
Discovery News featured an edited compilation of these interactions with great whites made by researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI). The video shows curious sharks swimming around the camera and occasionally attacking it and seeming somewhat confused when their prey isn’t immediately crushed between their powerful jaws.
The footage comes from a Discovery-sponsored autonomous underwater vehicle called the SharkCam, on a 2013 expedition to study sharks in waters near Guadalupe Island, off Baja Mexico's west coast.
According to Woods Hole's website, the five-foot-long, 80-lb., torpedo-shaped SharkCam is equipped with six GoPro video cameras, giving scientists a spectacular panoramic view of the autonomous vehicle's surroundings.
The SharkCam is actually a REMUS (Remote Environmental Monitoring UnitS) that has been modified to follow sharks tagged with a special acoustic transponder. The vehicle can dive to a depth of 100 meters (328 feet) and can be equipped with a number of sensors to fulfill the requirements of the mission at hand.
The project has been giving scientists an unprecedented look at the behavior of great white sharks in the wild. In the video, for instance, one can clearly see the shark seeming to roll its eyes back into its head as it chomps down. This is actually an incredibly close view of the shark’s nictitating membrane, which closes over the eye to protect it from thrashing prey as it strikes.
While the footage of attacking sharks from the perspective of the SharkCam can seem somewhat terrifying, the reality is that shark attacks on humans are very rare. In fact, out of over 200 million visitors to US beaches every year, there are only about 36 people who are attacked by sharks. Each year, an average of 4.2 attacks are fatal worldwide. According to the ocean conservation nonprofit Oceana, for every human killed by a shark, 25 million sharks are killed by humans.
For researchers at the WHOI, sharks are only the beginning. Plans are currently underway to use the REMUS system to study other marine life such as sea turtles, according to their website.
While videos of sea turtles might be less dramatic, researchers probably won’t have to worry as much about getting teeth marks in their expensive scientific equipment.

There's A Petition For Weird Al To Play At The Super Bowl
Philip.paulssonThis would be AWESOME.
Because why not?

The problem with the Super Bowl has always been too much football and too few nerds in Hawaiian shirts playing the accordion. One man hopes to fix this imbalance with his petition on Change.org for "Weird" Al Yankovic to play the 2015 Super Bowl halftime show.
The man who made the petition, Ed Ball, admits that he was drunk when he wrote it. "Yes, I submitted this after enjoying a few drinks," he wrote in an update to the petition, "and while I enjoy imbibing on occasion, I would get the same gratification seeing Weird Al perform at the Super Bowl even if I was sober."
People who signed the petition have commented things like "Weird Al brings out the best in us," and "The Super Bowl is a cultural icon. Weird Al is one of very few artists in our time that has a similar level of cultural influence."
Weird Al's latest album, Mandatory Fun, was his first album to hit #1 on the Billboard charts. Currently, the petition has 30,00 signatures. Everything's coming up weird.

For decades Weird Al has entertained fans, young and old, with his popular clever parodies and unique sense of humor. Having him headline the Super Bowl XLIX Halftime Show. would not only be overly accepted by the millions of views, but it would remain true to the standards and quality of the show business we have come to love and respect out of this prestigious event. The songs of artists that he is parodying could join him on stage to accompany, as well as other surprise appearances from well-known actors/actresses, adding more prestige and star power. The theatrics alone would be hilarious and a welcoming change, and draw a wider audience of fans that typically would not tune into the championship game or half-time show.

Report: Sprint abandons bid for T-Mobile because US would block merger
Philip.paulssonNOOOOO! I was hoping it'd go through so my reception on T-Mobile would be better in the boonies.
Sprint owner SoftBank has been talking about buying T-Mobile US for months, but is reportedly abandoning the plan because US regulators would likely object.
The Wall Street Journal reported today that SoftBank is giving up after "decid[ing] it simply would be too difficult to win approval from regulators." The report quoted the usual "people familiar with the matter." Sprint CEO Dan Hesse is also expected to be replaced tomorrow. The new CEO will be Marcelo Claure of Brightstar, according to Re/code.
We asked Sprint if it is ending its pursuit of T-Mobile, but a spokesperson declined to comment.

Samsung, Apple end lawsuits around the world, will still fight in US
Philip.paulssonHoly. They've sued each other in 9 different countries?! And they do *SO* much business with each other! Crazy.
Apple and Samsung have agreed to drop their patent lawsuits against each other in every jurisdiction but one: the US. The two companies have sued each other in Australia, Japan, South Korea, Germany, Netherlands, the UK, France, and Italy; and all these cases are being dropped without being settled and without any cross-licensing agreements being negotiated. The companies disclosed the change in legal strategy in a joint e-mail.
This leaves the US as the sole battleground between the smartphone giants. Juries in the US awarded Apple $120 million in May this year and $900 million in 2013 (reducing a $1.05 billion award from the previous year).
This move is the latest de-escalation in the smartphone patent wars. Apple and Google settled in May this year, ending all smartphone patent litigation between those companies. Apple and Samsung also dropped their appeals of an International Trade Commission case in June.

Evolve pushed back from October to February 2015
Philip.paulssonsunnovabitch! Was really looking forward to this and I want it NOWNOWNOWNOWNOW
Summer continues to be the season that separates the gaming projects that will actually see a holiday 2014 release and those that will inevitably be pushed into the next year for slightly more development time. Cooperative shooter Evolve joined the latter group today when publisher 2K announced in an earnings call that the anticipated shooter is being pushed back from a planned October 21, 2014 release to February 2015. No specific reason was given for the delay.
Developed by Left 4 Dead studio Turtle Rock, Evolve sees four players with unique capabilities teaming up to take on a single, human-controlled beast, who evolves new abilities by eating local flora and fauna. The unique take on the usual team-based shooter dynamics impressed our previewer earlier this year, and the game has continued to shine at trade show demos since then. Just this weekend, 2K conducted a closed alpha test of the game on PC, and the title will also be available on PS4 and Xbox One.
This news follows a recently announced delay for Battlefield: Hardline, which publisher EA pushed back from October 21 to "early 2015." If the persistent delays of holiday games in the past two years is any indication, they might not be alone by the time October finally comes around.

PSA: Wing Commander III available free on Origin
Philip.paulssonOoooh, might have to go download this when I get home! Loved this game.
It's been about 20 years since Mark Hamill first graced PC screens as Colonel Christopher Blair in Origin System's Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. If you've somehow gone this whole time without experiencing his performance, now's your chance to rectify that. EA is currently offering the game completely free on its Origin digital distribution service.
WC3 is part of EA's ongoing "On the House" promotion, which started off with Battlefield 3 in June and The Sims 2: Ultimate in July, with the promise of new free titles to come regularly in the future. Though the price is time-limited, those who download the game during the sale will have access to it through Origin indefinitely.
Wing Commander III usually sells for just $5 on Origin and is currently available for $6 DRM-free from GOG, so this isn't exactly the world's biggest video game sale. Still, there can be a big difference between "free" and "a few bucks," especially when it comes to a retro PC classic that every sci-fi fan should experience.

“Bored” California man sentenced to nearly two years for laser strike
Philip.paulssonThis is so fucking stupid. In the article itself: "While no serious injuries or deaths have occurred, pilots say that being struck by a laser can be a terrifying experience that may cause temporary blindness."
So, of those 17 fucking thousand laser "strikes" there have been..... ZERO negative effects? Yeah, let's send some guy to jail for two years for doing that. Cause that makes sense.

On Monday, a federal court in Central California sentenced a 26-year-old to one year and nine months in prison for firing two different laser pointers at a Kern County Sheriff’s Office helicopter over a six month period in 2013.
The man, Brett Lee Scott of Buttonwillow, took a plea deal with federal prosecutors according to a May 5, 2014 court filing. Scott explained his actions by saying that he was “bored.”
It may seem like a silly thing, but laser strikes against planes, helicopters, and other aerial vehicles have become an increasing epidemic nationwide. Since the FBI began keeping track in 2005, there have been more than 17,000 laser strikes—one-fifth (3,960) in 2013 alone. During the first three months of 2014, the FBI reported an average of 9.5 incidents daily.
