Back To Life: Ruskies Claim They Have Enough Woolly Mammoth DNA To Begin Cloning

danipretto

this doesn't sound like a good idea. jurassic park anyone?

woolly-mammoth-cloning.jpg Thanks to the well preserved specimen found last summer, Russian scientists now claim they have enough viable woolly mammoth DNA to clone one of the beasts. Obviously, I will be the first person to ride it. And probably the last. Watch us jump this volcano!
"The data we are about to receive will give us a high chance to clone the mammoth," Radik Khayrullin, of the Russian Association of Medical Anthropologists, told the Siberian Times. Researchers at Russia's North-Eastern Federal University discovered the remains-- mammoth hair, soft tissues and bone marrow -- in the northeastern province of Yakutia. During the autopsy, they were surprised to find an incredibly well preserved corpse -- better, in fact, than "a body of a human buried for six months," another scientist told the Times.
Wow, a corpse better preserved than the "body of a human buried for six months". That really evokes some sweet mental imagery, doesn't it? And right before lunch! Lucky us. You know, it's a shame nobody really cares about cloning woolly mammoths. It's true -- what's the first thing you think when somebody mentions cloning woolly mammoths? "But what about dinosaurs?" Exactly. Thanks to Mon (the day?!), who agrees we should all clone ourselves so we can go to work and make money but stay home and play video games at the same time. I'M IN.

Fishing Ban in the Lawless High Seas Could Give Fish a Fighting Chance

by Lucy Wang

i feel like this is impossible to police.

Overfishing, plos biology, fish stocks, fish stock collapse, high seas, international fishing, international waters, unsustainable fishing, seafood, crow white, Christopher Costello, tragedy of the commons, nearshore fishing

Scientists have proposed a novel idea to prevent the collapse of fish stocks due to overfishing: ban fishing in international waters and turn the open ocean into a worldwide reserve. The proposal introduced in the journal PLoS Biology may seem extreme, but scientists say such drastic measures may be necessary if we want to ensure future generations have the same access to seafood. Unless we act now, the journal Science reports that overfishing may permanently take seafood off the menu by 2048.

Damn Rich People: $250/Roll Gold Embossed Toilet Paper

danipretto

why????????

gold-foil-toilet-paper.jpgFinally, some decent Happy Birthday and wedding themed ass-wiping paper! This is the $250/roll gold foil embossed toilet paper produced by German manufacturer Tissue Design (previously: $1.3-million a roll 22-karat gold toilet paper -- this is the pauper's version). It's not an April Fools' joke, it's a real product. That way you can have gold embossed Happy Birthday toilet paper at your next party. And I will steal it. I don't care if everybody else is leaving skid marks in their underwear, I'm putting that shit on eBay. Thanks to Dino, who surprisingly wrote in English instead of RAWRs.

Dog With Only Two Front Legs Running On The Beach

danipretto

omg. this would have made me a big ol mess if yesterday hadn't gone so well. PS. they were able to save Jersey's leg!!!!!!

2-legged-boxer.gif This is a video of Duncan the boxer running on the beach. Duncan was born with severely deformed back legs, so his adoptive family had them amputated. And now he has learned to run with just his front two legs. Cool, but I'd still want some back wheels if I was him. "Vroom vroom, bitches!" -- Duncan the Boxer (with wheels)
For those who said I was an animal abuser for removing his severely deformed legs to give him a chance, for those who sent me hate mail and doubted this boy, suggesting we should just euthanize him - you are wrong. Thank goodness this baby boy landed in our loving home!
Regardless of how you feel about his adoptive family's decision, after watching that video of him on the beach there is no doubt in my mind that he could outrun you. "He's cheating." Wow -- accusing a two-legged dog of cheating? It's like you're always on the lookout for ways to be even more of an @$$hole. Keep going for the full video.

Sun-Dried Tomato Baba Ganoush

by ellawoodward
danipretto

yum. yes please.

sun-dried tomato baba ganoush

I’m so sorry for not sharing a recipe with you last week, I was moving house and my life was all packed up in boxes so I didn’t get to do much cooking! I’m so happily settled now though and will be cooking more than ever as I have the best kitchen, which is inspiring me so much. My favourite thing about my new flat are my kitchen shelves, which are filled with my jar collection containing all my favourite foods. I spent months looking for the perfect shelves and collecting all the jars and I’m just so in love with them all that I had to share the photos with you in this post! While I was moving I ate a lot of easy, speedy food that I could make in big batches so that I’d always have something awesome to snack on. Of course there was the usual hummus and guacamole, lots of dates, amazing smoothies and sweet potato brownies but I also spiced it up a bit with lots of baba ganoush. About a year ago I went through a phase of making baba ganoush all the time and I’d rather forgotten about it until my amazing flatmate whizzed up an aubergine dip recently and I remember how obsessed I was with creamy, roasted aubergine. It just tastes so incredible, especially when mixed with a little tahini, lemon juice and cumin – I then add sun-dried tomatoes as they really bring the flavour to a whole new level, making it even more wonderfully rich and delicious. It tastes amazing in a rainbow bowl with grilled peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, rocket and pomegranates; or as a dip for your crackers, sweet potato wedges or crudités; used as a sauce for your pasta; spread thickly on some sueprfood bread; stirred into some brown rice with a little miso or eaten straight from the bowl with a spoon!

sun-dried tomato baba ganoushsun-dried tomato baba ganoushsun-dried tomato baba ganoush

Makes one bowl:

- 2 aubergines

- 12 sun-dried tomatoes

- 1 tablespoon of tahini

- 1/2 a lemon

- 1/2 a teaspoon of cumin

- salt and pepper

sun-dried tomato baba ganoush

Pre-heat the oven to 180C, then pierce the aubergines with a knife – this gives them some breathing room and stops them from exploding in your oven! Then allow them to bake for about thirty minutes, until the skin is getting crispy and the inside is amazingly soft.

Once the aubergines have cooked, slice the green end off them and then place them in your food processor with all the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth and creamy – I love the skin of the aubergine as I think it makes the texture nicer, so I always add it but you don’t have to.

Zucchini Noodles (Zoodles) with Lemon-Garlic Spicy Shrimp

by Skinnytaste Gina
danipretto

more zucc noodles. yumm.

Spicy shrimp with garlic, zucchini noodles, tomatoes and a squeeze of lemon juice – I just inhaled this EASY low-carb, gluten-free, paleo-friendly dish for lunch which took less than 20 minutes to make, start to finish and it was DELICIOUS!

Today it's finally starting to feel like Spring! Before you know it, summer will be here and you know what that means.... bathing suit season! I've been diligent about working out a few times a week, but you know what they say – great abs start in the kitchen and this so true so now that winter is over, I've been cutting back on my carbs (not eliminating, don't worry!) and really making my calories count.

In this dish, rather than using pasta, I swapped it for zucchini noodles. My Paderno Spiral Vegetable Slicer is my all time FAVORITE cooking gadget. It's the easiest way to make zucchini noodles, sweet potato spirals, carrot ribbons and more! Prior to owning one, I used my mandolin but it's so much quicker and easier (and safer) with this fun gadget – you NEED one!!

Last year we heard about a man that had 75 percent of his skull replaced with a 3D-printed replica. Now Wired UK reports a woman from the Netherlands has had the entire top section of her skull replaced with a transparent, plastic implant. Neurosurgeons from the University Medical Centre Utrecht performed the extreme procedure to save the woman from a rare chronic bone disorder, which increased the thickness of her cranium from 1.5 centimeters to five centimeters and put her at risk of permanent brain damage.

Clearly somebody has been hitting the gym app in the Danger Room. Or steroids. I'm kidding, when I close my eyes and imagine Hugh's penis and balls, it's obvious he's not juicing. "Just how often do you do that?" All the time -- I'm doing it right now even. Thanks to carey, who informed me she has a Wolverine poster above her bed and now I'm wishing I did too.

Cauliflower "Fried Rice"

by Skinnytaste Gina

I LOVE fried rice, and often make my own fried rice at home with brown rice which is delicious. But sometimes when I want to cut down on my carbs, I opt for cauliflower rice.

I posted this Cilantro Lime Cauliflower "Rice" a while back, and it was a huge hit. So I decided to play around with that recipe and make this Asian version to go with the Orange Chicken I posted yesterday, and my husband (who detests cauliflower) was pretty amazed how the meal turned out. The portions are generous and you get a serving or two of vegetables into your diet.

McDonald's Fan Gets Tattoo Of Receipt On His Arm

danipretto

regret

mcdonalds-receipt-tattoo.jpg This is the arm of 18-year old Norwegian fast food fan Stian Ytterdahl. He got a McDonald's receipt tattooed on it. Why? Because who doesn't love McFlurries? I still can't believe it. I mean, I love fast food as much as the next guy who's given up on eating right or working out, but a tattoo of a McDonald's receipt? It's genius!
Some friends who wanted to punish Stian Ytterdahl for being too active with the ladies (uh huh, sure) gave him a choice between a Barbie on his ass or the receipt on his arm. Ytterdahl resigned himself to his fate (and probably wished he hadn't added those 4 extra toppings to his burger). Sabelink Tattoo said it was the strangest tattoo they'd ever done, and asked Ytterdahl if he'd get their receipt on his other arm--for free, of course. He agreed, and the next session is scheduled for Monday. McDonald's Norway says the tattoo isn't a publicity stunt, but they think it's terrific. "We're obviously talking about a loyal customer," said a spokeswoman.
Wait -- he agreed to get the tattoo as punishment from his friends for being too successful with the ladies? That makes zero sense. Besides, if anything it's going to make him MORE successful. I heard Norwegian girls love the Mickey D. Man, I remember when I got my first tattoo a friend asked me what I thought it would look like when I was 60. You know what I told him? It won't be worth digging up my grave to find out. THEN I POKED HIS F***ING EYES OUT. Thanks to Clarissa, who did not explain it all but did mention trying Taco Bell's new breakfast menu today. Jealous!

Whatever Works: Teacher Keeps Class Quiet With The Threat Of Game Of Thrones Spoilers

game-of-thrones-deaths.jpg A Belgian high school math teacher has taken to keeping his class quiet by threatening to write the names of everyone killed in Game of Thrones on the board if anybody is unruly. Whatever, man. *tries to shoot spit-wad, accidentally swallows*
Asking his students which of them watched the fantasy drama, the majority raised their hands, to which the teacher responded: "Well, I've read all the books. If there is too much noise, I will write the names of the dead on the board." Reported in the Belgian newspaper nieuwsblad.be, the teacher continued: "They [the dead] are enough to fill the whole year and I can even describe how they die."
Interesting idea, but all it takes is one student who has also read all the books, then there's no such thing as a spoiler for them. They can talk all they want! Sure they might not be the most popular kid in class afterwards, but I was never that popular in high school and I turned out fine. You know which crowd I used to eat lunch with? The Rollerbladers. JOKING, I was never that bad. The BMX bikes. "You mean bikers?" No, just their bikes. Thanks to Nadia, who threatens her students with being ignorant for the rest of their lives if they don't pay attention. Man, mine just used to smack me with a ruler.

Straight Outta Spaceballs: Chinese Gov To Sell Canned Air

canned-air-in-china.jpg The Chinese government is going to start selling bottled and canned air to tourists (previously: this businessman doing it) starting June 20th in an attempt to address its growing air pollution problem. I'm not sure that's really addressing the underlying problem. Complimentary gas masks -- now that's the ticket.
The bottles of air will to be manufactured as part of a tourism scheme by authorities in the southwestern Guizhou province. The move comes after the country's biggest online travel agency and insurance firms joined forces to offer policies to tourists whose trips are visually impaired by the pollution.
Addressing your pollution problem by bottling fresh air and selling it to tourists? That doesn't really make me want to visit. That would be like me inviting you over to my apartment but selling you a HAZMAT suit at the door. My apartment is really awesome, I promise, just...put this on first. You're gonna have a great time. Thanks to Thaylor H, who is going to start bottling moon air and start selling it to rich people back on earth. "There is no air on the moon." WHAT?!

Have you heard of Edith Macefield? This old lady turned down a million dollar offer to sell her home to make way for a shopping mall in Seattle, Washington. Without Edith’s land, the developer had to alter the building’s plan so that it would meander around the small, two-story house. At 84 years old, Edith become a folk hero. And if you think her house looks familiar, it’s probably because it looks amazingly similar to (and could be the inspiration for) the famous flying house in Pixar’s animated film UP.

Banana Bread, Brie and Chocolate Grilled Cheese.

by Jessica
danipretto

not sure how i feel about this.... thoughts?

This is why facebook is the devil.

Banana Bread, Brie and Chocolate Grilled Cheese I howsweeteats.com

I had banana bread.

I wanted chocolate.

A day doesn’t go by where I don’t desire cheese.

Frankly, my banana bread was a bit stale. Which is a feat in itself because that means we didn’t eat an entire loaf in 34 seconds.

Why aren’t loaf pans made much larger? Like, instead of 9×5 inches, it should probably be 2×4 feet. THEN no one would have the problem of eating the entire loaf of banana bread the same day it’s made.

I know it isn’t just me.

Banana Bread, Brie and Chocolate Grilled Cheese I howsweeteats.com

Anyhoo. Even I thought that banana bread grilled cheese was a bit out there. I asked on facebook & twitter if I should do such a horrid thing. And you thought that I should.

I relish in the fact that you are weird too. We SO like all the same things.

I’m such a grilled cheese freak. Grill all the bread, all the cheese. I want it 24/7. I’m even teaching a class on it in two weeks!

Banana Bread, Brie and Chocolate Grilled Cheese I howsweeteats.com

Um, also, how cute are my metallic rose goldy mugs? My friend Laura sent me one of them and I, of course, had to buy one from Starbucks during the holiday season and they pretty much make my day. Pretty things.

Life is so much better when things are pretty.

Banana Bread, Brie and Chocolate Grilled Cheese I howsweeteats.com

If you love sweets and cheeses, you’ll die. Melty brie, dark chocolate. I used a banana bread recipe that you can find in my cookbook later this year, but I have lots of others here. Perhaps we should try the bacon one…

Since banana bread is soft yet dense, the entire slice doesn’t crisp up like regular crusty bread. You need a thick slice, after all, for this to work. You can make the sandwich like a regular old grilled cheese OR you can butter both sides, fry both sides, then stick the cheese and chocolate in the middle and keep it over low heat until the insides melt.

The insides melt. Now that sounds delicious. Hmmpf.

Except it so is.

Banana Bread, Brie and Chocolate Grilled Cheese

Yield: serves 2 appropriately, 1 obnoxiously

Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

4 slices banana bread (if it's slightly stale, even better!)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened for spreading
6 ounces brie cheese
4 ounces dark chocolate, chopped

Directions:

Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Butter the outsides of the banana bread, and place one slice butter-side down in the skillet. Immediately top the slice with some cheese, a bit of chocolate, and a little more cheese. I like to always have cheese on both sides to act like "glue" - it helps hold the sandwich together when flipping. Cook until both sides are golden and the cheese and chocolate is barely melted, about 4 minutes per side. If the cheese is melting slowly, I like to reduce the heat to medium-low and cover the skillet - just make sure to watch the sandwich because the sides cook more quickly.

Yep. I did that.

Count Me In: Chocolate Chip Cookie Shot Glasses

chocolate-chip-cookie-shot-glasses.jpg These are the chocolate chip shot glasses designed by New York City pastry chef Dominique Ansel. If his name sounds familiar, it's because Dominique is also responsible for the super-popular cronut. If his name didn't sound familiar at all, welcome to the club.
Figuring that "if everyone was drinking milk with cookies, you might as well make a dessert that allows them both to be combined," Ansel has created a chocolate chip cookie recipe that "stayed crispy and moist in parts" even as it held milk.
Admittedly, I do love milk and cookies. Although I just float a bunch of cookies in a glass of milk until they sink, then drink all the milk and scrape the cookies off the bottom with a spoon. PRO-STYLE. I can also drink a gallon of milk in under an hour and have the video to prove it, I just can't post it because I did it naked in the bathtub. Thanks to William S, Julietta and Acon, who prefer their milk and cookies the old fashioned way: left out on the hearth for Santa.
