The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is preparing for the potential spread of the coronavirus in the US. You might be considering getting masks or a respirator to cover your mouth and protect yourself. Before you do, note that the CDC does not recommend you wear a mask to protect against coronavirus unless you are already showing symptoms.
But if you find yourself in a situation where you need a mask and you have facial hair that could break the seal of that mask, check out this handy CDC infographic, which I’ve also included at the top of this post, to know what facial hair you can wear while not breaking the seal of that mask.
Any facial hair that fits entirely under the respirator should be fine
Hilarious. Also, plug for a great book. I didn't even realize they had a series! Will watch.
It’s a truth universally acknowledged, that an angry fan online must be in search of a website to launch a mostly useless petition. A recent protest from a Christian group asking Netflix to remove Good Omensfrom its library is a perfect example — except that Good Omens isn’t part of Netflix’s library, because it’s an Amazon show.
The petition was first reported by The Guardian, which discovered that a Christian organization known as the Return to Order campaign launched the petition on its website asking Netflix to remove the series, which is an adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s beloved satirical novel from 1990 about the apocalypse. The petition argued the show was another flagrant attempt to “make satanism appear...
That's a big discrepancy between US and "international" salaries.

Tech salaries just keep going up in Seattle, with the average pay jumping from $125,000 in 2015 to $138,000 today. That’s among the findings from career marketplace Hired in its latest State of Salaries report out on Thursday.
The report looks at trends in business hubs across the globe, including Seattle, and analyzes how much salaries have changed, which industries are paying the most, and how pay compares when cost of living is factored in.
Seattle’s tech salaries over the previous four years show a 10-percent jump, according to Hired:
2015: $125,000
2016: $129,000
2017: $132,000
2018: $138,000
The region — home to Amazon, Microsoft, Tableau, Zillow, Redfin, Zulily, Rover and sizable outposts for Google, Facebook and others — is second only to the San Francisco Bay Area, where pay averages $145,000 a year.
It’s the fourth consecutive year that Silicon Valley has topped Hired’s list. New York ($133,000), Boston ($127,000), Los Angeles ($128,000), Austin ($125,000) and Washington, D.C. ($123,000) are also in the top tier. In Boston, paychecks jumped 9 percent from 2017 to 2018.
Tech workers in Seattle who would consider moving to the Bay Area would need to make $44,000 more, or $182,000 a year, to maintain their current standard of living among that region’s sky-high cost of living and real estate market. That ranks third behind the adjusted salaries it would require to move from Denver ($185,000) and Austin ($208,000).
Austin, Seattle and Denver ranked one, two and three as the most appealing cities that tech workers would consider relocating to. According to Hired, those folks may be on the move soon. Sixty percent of tech workers surveyed said they plan to leave their city in five years. Here are the reasons why:
(Hired Graphic)
Here are other key findings from Hired’s State of Salaries:
Job types: Full stack engineers are the most in-demand in the U.S., while backend engineers are most sought after in the U.K.
Race and tech: Black tech workers are paid the least — and the gap is growing. They’re paid $11,000 less than white peers, up by $5,000 since last year. For the first time, Asian tech workers are out-earning their white counterparts by $2,000 on average.
Age and tech: Salaries for tech workers peak in their mid-40s at $149,000 but then plateau after 50 where it hovers around $146,000. It then drops even further as they enter their 60s with $144,000 offered.
(Hired Graphic)
Tech pays most: The technology sector pays candidates the most competitive salaries at $141,000. In the U.S., retail, entertainment and healthcare industries tied for second, with an average salary of $140,000, followed by education at $138,000.
Degrees of separation: 31 percent of tech workers believe they could have the exact same job without their advanced degree. Only 23 percent of techies with master’s and/or doctorates believe they command higher salaries because of their advanced degree.
According to Hired’s methodology, the report is based on proprietary information, data from real job offers on the platform from companies to tech workers, gathered and analyzed by Hired’s data science team. Hired focused on technology workers in 13 cities. The salaries included reflect more than 420,000 interview requests and job offers from the past year facilitated through Hired’s marketplace of more than 10,000 participating companies and 98,000 job seekers. Survey responses from more than 1,800 tech workers were also collected to understand how education, salaries, benefits and cost of living affect workers’ decision making and satisfaction.

“At first it was absolutely shocking. He’s up every two hours. If all he does is grumble, there’s a good chance that he’ll fall back asleep. But if he starts gobbling out vowels and consonants, that means he’s up for good and nobody’s going back to sleep for a while. We’ve been getting some longer chunks of sleep lately. But whenever we think it’s conquered, there’s a curveball. So we’ve just had to embrace being absolutely knackered all the time. The first thing to go was our vocabularies. You know when you can’t quite think of a word, but then you suddenly get it? Well that doesn’t happen anymore. The word never comes. So now we consider it a win if we’re able to communicate a rough idea of what we mean.”

The first VR experience based on author Brandon Sanderson’s popular Stormlight Archive series has arrived. The Way of Kings: Escape the Shattered Plains marks the first time that the books have been translated to a visual medium, giving fans the chance to put themselves in the shoes of one of the series’ main heroes, Kaladin Stormblessed, as well as get the chance to see what a possible film or TV show adaptation could look like further down the line.
The Way of Kings: Escape the Shattered Plains was developed by Arcturus in partnership with DMG Entertainment with a twofold purpose in mind: the aforementioned fan experience is part of the proceedings, but the VR session will also be used to help DMG Entertainment (which owns the rights...
Sir Terry Pratchett’s long-running fantasy series Discworld is finally getting a TV adaptation from BBC Studios, according to a new report from Deadline.
Discworld is a massive series written by Pratchett — who died in 2015 — which spans 41 books, dozens of characters, and a variety of smaller, thematic sub-series within the larger work. This show will reportedly be a six-episode series, with a current working title The Watch. That implies that it’ll be based off one of the most popular subsets of the overall series, featuring the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, which grows from a ramshackle group of a couple officers trying to get by to a full-fledged city police force over the course of the series.
In the latest data-analytics news from Captain Obvious, one new report has quantifiably named New York City the dirtiest city in America — by far. Leading the top 40 cities in the U.S. on combined filth factors as collected by the EPA, the U.S. Census, and the American Housing Survey, the Big Apple was considered especially rotten for its above-and-beyond litter and rodent issues.
I've gotten such good reviews - has anyone seen this already?
As someone who has watched the Netflix reboot through twice, I'm confident in saying it is a smashing success. I laughed. I cried. I wanted another eight episodes. The new Fab Five are so charming; it's hard to stop watching.

I always wonder when kids learn to do this (or not). Kai will sometimes do it and I'm not sure to stop it or just let it be.
We've all been there. Just after the ceremonial un-robing that occurs prior to hopping in the shower and closely following the forthcoming cascade of water from the shower head — your bladder beckons. But it seems like a lot of work to get out of the shower, grab a towel, dry off, and make your way back to the commode. So you ask yourself the age-old question, "To pee or not to pee?"
This is doable guys - we can all chip in and it can be a glamping holiday destination.

I'm sure everyone saw this already, but, well-played Guggenheim....
When the White House requested to borrow a Vincent van Gogh painting from the Guggenheim, the New York museum had a crappy counteroffer: a used gold toilet.
I really need to get my Philippine passport so i can go to Vietnam more.
Every year Price of Travel updates our Backpacker Index, which now ranks 138 major tourist destinations around the world by price from cheapest to most expensive. First launched in late 2010, the most recent update is now complete and it marks the 8th year of this ongoing project.
There were no major changes during 2017 that would make headlines, but of course some currencies did better than others and some cities became more expensive than some others. By popular demand, we added two new cities so we finally have coverage in El Salvador and Nicaragua, giving us at least one destination in each of the seven Central America countries.
The largest change that will actually affect nearly everyone is that the US Dollar finally came down about 10% against nearly every country in the world, putting it much closer to proper parity with currencies such as the Euro, Canadian dollar, and Australian dollar. The British Pound also made up some ground, although it still seems a bit undervalued as 2018 begins.
The good news for anyone who doesn't hold USDs is that the US and the many countries who use the USD or peg to the USD have all become about 10% cheaper in the last year. Of course this also means that Americans will find most of the world about 10% more expensive than last year, but still nearly every other major destination will still feel like good value to Americans (and most Europeans).
Here is the cheapest 10 on the 2018 list as of January 17, 2018
As of early 2008, Iceland's currency was so strong that it was high among the most expensive countries in the world for foreign visitors. Then the global banking crisis hit and Iceland's banks were hit far worse than most others. By late 2008, Iceland's currency had its value cut in half, and suddenly this amazing island country was a massive travel bargain.
Now 10 years later the currency has rebounded by about 30%, but more importantly Iceland has become far more popular as a travel destination than it had ever been before, especially in the last 3 years or so. As a result, Iceland is now back near the bottom of the affordability lists, especially when it comes to restaurants, alcohol, and accommodation.
The good news is that Iceland is all about the scenic beauty, and almost everything you'll see and do once you get there is free. Rent a car and drive the Ring Road if you have a week or so. All of the waterfalls and scenic lookouts and even the national parks are free (not including a small parking fee). The country is amazing and visiting Iceland on a budget is still possible if you do your research.
“I came to the city when I was twenty and became a fruit seller. It’s allowed me to build a house in my village. I feel healthy. I get to eat. A lot of people don’t get to eat on time. So I’ve gotten everything I wanted. The minute you think: ‘I have a lot’—that’s the moment your spirit is at rest. My spirit is at rest.”
this would be huge. but amazing if target items can be sold on amazon international
It's fair to say that Amazon had a great 2017: Announcing HQ2, winning at Black Friday, and—who could forget?—its nearly $14 billion Whole Foods order. How do you follow up a year like that? Well, one analyst thinks that Bezos could be looking to target the bullseye.
There are far fewer Louis Vuitton collectors on the planet than there are Star Wars fans, so when it comes to putting old Louie Vee to work artist and craftsman Gabriel Dishaw decided the bags had to die so that geeky art may live.
So Gabriel expertly deconstructed a bunch of Louis Vuitton bags, turning them into amazing sculptures of helmets and AT-ATs and droids that look like a million bucks.
Gabriel is known for his ability to turn a pile of scrap into a stunning, and typically Star Wars themed, work of art, but his new foray into fashion sculptures may forever change the way people think about luggage.
