Why DRM-free comic books are a big deal, even if you don’t read comics

Yesterday, publisher Image Comics threw a media event in San Francisco. It brought in some authors (notably Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead, even though they spelled his name "Roberk" on the official site), dropped a couple of announcements, and mixed it up with the press and fans. Standard stuff.
Maybe you're already an Image Comics fan. It would be understandable—Image is the third largest comics publisher behind industry behemoths Marvel and DC. And its model of creator-owned works certainly doesn't put it at the back of the pack when it comes to creativity. If you're looking for a series about a detective who solves crimes using his psychic impressions from eating things (John Layman's Eisner Award winning Chew), Image is your go-to spot.
But even if you don't read comic books, it's worth sitting up and paying attention to Image's big announcement at the show. Starting now, the publisher is going to sell its digital comic books through its website utterly DRM-free. PDF, EPUB, or comic reader formats CBR and CBZ (basically just zipped or RAR'd collections of JPEGs) are all yours to keep, back up, and read on your device of choice, however you see fit.

"The “Escalation Die” Where we found it: This is a mechanic that exists in a few other RPGs, but..."
FordmadoxfraudHuh. I actually really really like this idea.
The “Escalation Die”
Where we found it: This is a mechanic that exists in a few other RPGs, but most notably 13th Age which is an RPG developed by a few of the lead designers on D&D 3rd and 4th editions.
What is it: A mechanic aimed at speeding up combat by giving ever increasing bonuses to attack rolls as combat rounds progress. Enemies become easier to attack, meaning characters get “stronger” the longer a fight goes on. It starts at 1 and increases each round toward a max of 6.

FordmadoxfraudIt's interesting to me just how much this Joker interpretation presages Jack Nicholson in the role. To my eye, that looks EXACTLY like the Nicholson Joker.
avataraang: dongbufeng: bryankonietzko: This past Friday I...

This past Friday I published this post which featured a photo of a monitor showing Katara and Aang’s grown-up children, Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin. Later that night at work I saw Colin’s answer to an anonymous “ask" (I can’t figure out how to link or reblog it properly in my browser, so the screen shot at the top will have to suffice). It is a shame the anonymous asker drew an incorrect assumption based on one image created in relatively uncontrolled conditions, and I feel that Colin’s answer hit the nail on the head.
Normally I would leave it at that. I prefer to stay out of this type of discourse on Tumblr and let the large body of work Mike and I have put out there over the years speak for itself (which obviously DOES NOT include the gross misinterpretations and misrepresentations of our work in this guy’s work). There’s nothing perfect about me or my work, but I am proud of it and the diverse, inclusive, atypical-for-American-TV world it portrays and the characters that populate it, and what it means to many people all over this globe.
But, like most people, I don’t like seeing the spreading of misinformation, nor being falsely accused of something, nor fans of Avatar and Korra believing we have let them down regarding a very sensitive issue when they are mistaken. The claim that “none of Katara and Aang’s kids share Katara’s complexion" is unequivocally false. Kya’s color model shares the exact same skin color as Katara’s; Tenzin’s skin is a touch darker and less saturated than Aang’s; and Bumi’s is just about in the middle of his siblings’. I made a color swatch chart above, with all the colors taken directly from the characters’ normal color models. I included Korra’s and her parents’ skin tones on there as well, just for reference. I also compiled screen shots of all the characters with the color picker open, sampling their skin tones. You can see for yourself that Katara and her daughter Kya share the same color code: #bd916f
Depicting diverse characters is an issue that is very important to me. But as an art director, depicting a variety of lighting situations, light temperatures, colored light sources, color atmospheres, contrast levels, dynamic ranges, tinted filters, tones, styles, moods, exposure settings, diffusion levels, etc., is all very important to me too, all in an attempt to make great, inspired, sophisticated, beautiful art that reflects something of the complex world in which we live.
Real flesh and blood skin is shiny in places, matte in others, translucent, reflective, uneven, smooth in places, textured in others. It reacts to light and color in such complex ways that while most people rarely even think about it in our normal day experiences, the properties are so intricate and subtle that mastering its accurate representation eludes students of painting such as myself for years on end. On the other hand, 2D cartoon character skin is a flat field of projected or printed color. It is an abstracted, simplified representation. If one adds lighting to a 2D animated character, that whole color field of skin tone is lightened––uniformly, unless you apply a the few limited techniques at our disposal in TV animation involving gradations. If one adds lighting to real flesh and blood skin, highlights and core shadows are formed, light models surfaces and bounces onto others, colors are reflected from surrounding objects… on and on. 3D animation certainly has many more tools at its disposal to depict skin in a realistic fashion, but even that isn’t a cakewalk and many attempts plummet into the uncanny valley.
As Colin made reference to, color theory is an incredibly fascinating, frustrating, and bewildering pursuit. I’ve been studying and trying to apply it for twenty years, and I’m still in its awe. There are so many factors to consider before trusting your own perception. For example, in the image above with the characters’ heads, Kya’s skin appears to my eye to be slightly lighter than Katara’s, despite the fact that I know they are absolutely the same color. This is most likely due to the effect of simultaneous contrast, also known as contrast effect: in simple terms, colors are pushed lighter, darker, warmer, and cooler based on what other colors are next to them. I’ve taken a sample of Korra’s normal skin tone and applied it to an illustration with a painted background and all of a sudden it looks green. On another background it might appear gray. Or bright orange. The average 2D animated show out there in the world has stock normal color models for its characters that they use for almost every scene (occasionally with a “night" version that is a bit darker and cooler). Typically the character models are presented in a vacuum, with no change in lighting, atmosphere, contrast, etc… no regard for any of the artistic properties mentioned above that I am trying to utilize in my animation art direction.
I’m not going to make that kind of show. Instead, I’m going to add lighting, change contrast levels, mix up the colors of light sources, try to inject some atmosphere into the world we’re creating. And as a result, characters’ skin tones are going to appear different depending on the context of the scene. The colors on a normal color model sheet are what’s called local color in color theory. This is the color of an object in neutral, even light. But it’s just a starting point, a flat color field in a vacuum. On Avatar we dialed every single color model from its normal model to match the lighting and color atmosphere of the background painting for each sequence in all sixty-one episodes. On Korra we do that too, and take it many steps further by adding lighting and atmosphere effects in the compositing stage, all in a pursuit of a dramatic, cinematic aesthetic. Sometimes it works out and I’m satisfied with the results. Sometimes the effects are too heavy-handed and even I’m saying, “His/her skin looks too light!" Unfortunately, this is a TV show production where we are frantically making dozens of episodes at once and we don’t get to finesse the final composites like they are able to do in feature productions. I fix what I can in retakes and color correction, but there’s only so much I can do. But I’d rather have a few fumbles in the pursuit of good art than make a flat show with no lighting or atmosphere.
And I enjoy sharing sneak peeks of the work we’re making with you guys, which often means I take a snapshot on my iPhone or DSLR of a screen and post it on Tumblr. Take a look at the last compilation of images above to see how differently colors, particularly skin tones, can vary depending on their sources. This opens up another vastly complex subject of which I am a frustrated student: photography. Take color theory and multiply it by optical engineering and then by computer science and then pull all of your hair out as you try to get your meticulously processed photo to appear the same color and contrast level on a variety of digital devices and non-color-managed web browsers and non-color-calibrated monitors. Or try the simpler task of taking a picture of something on a TV screen and see how different the photo looks than the image you saw. Everything goes out the window. While you’re at it, take digital pictures of the same red apple at different times of day, in different rooms, under different lights, outside in different weather. Then pull all of those photos into your computer and make color swatches of what you thought you knew to be “red." Then try painting a picture of that apple using just those sampled color swatches. You’ll start to see how complex this all is.
I am all for social justice and breaking down ignorance and oppressive, hurtful social constructs, particularly when the path to that is to inform, educate, open minds, and promote empathy and equality. I am not a fan of self-righteousness in any form and I struggle to keep from drifting in that direction with my own views and convictions. The internet provides a great platform to call BS on a lot of things, and I encourage people to use it for that. But now that you have the official local color swatches of these characters’ “normal" skin tones in the image above, I can assure you that using it like some Behr color chip ammunition to lambast every fanart depiction of Korra that doesn’t match #a08365 is a flawed pursuit. Ask yourself if any of the things listed above in this post might be factoring into a color variation before you shoot from the hip with your judgement. And if the depiction of Korra in some fanart is without a doubt offensive to you, consider phrasing your response in a way that could help them see it your way. Art is hard! Maybe he or she is trying to get the hang of painting and working with color (skin being one of the hardest things to master). Maybe he or she is still ignorant to the worldly views that are obvious and significant to you. You could take this opportunity to turn it into what they call in parenting “a teaching moment." You could open some eyes and educate someone who might turn around and share their enlightenment with many others.
I haven’t even scratched the surface of all there is to discuss on this topic in this overlong post. But I urge you to consider any number of the factors listed and described above before you jump to false conclusions, get your feelings hurt, or lash out with self-righteous condemnation based on a variable rather than a constant.
Love, Bryan
Post from Bryan that stands on its own. But two things to note in addition to its main content:
1) “which obviously DOES NOT include the gross misinterpretations and misrepresentations of our work in this guy’s work"
—Mike and Bryan have never publicly critiszed M Night Shayamalan before and these are harsh words.
2) He tags the post with “kataang babies"

"The story goes something like this: A gamer sets up a bot-vs-bot match on his Quake III Arena server..."
FordmadoxfraudThis is the greatest thing ever.
The story goes something like this: A gamer sets up a bot-vs-bot match on his Quake III Arena server and lets the match run to see how the bots will adapt over a long period of time. The bot AI (artificial intelligence) in Quake III Arena is designed to adapt to new scenarios and situations but these are usually resolved in short matches.
So he starts up the match and then promptly forgets all about it—until four years later when he decides to login and see what’s happening.
What he discovers is puzzling: the bots on both teams are simply standing still, not doing anything. The server is running and the game isn’t frozen. The bots are simply standing there, not killing one another.
So this anonymous gamer downloads the game and logs into the server to see what happens when he enters the match.
Here things just keep getting stranger. When he enters, the bots don’t fire on him—instead, they rotate to turn and look at him, and continue to look at him as he walks around the map.

Two Drawings by Jorge Luis Borges Illustrate the Author’s Obsessions

Jorge Luis Borges had many fascinations—detective novels, gauchos, libraries, and labyrinths. Two prominent figures that occupied his mind, the tango and mythical monsters, appear in drawings Borges made in his manuscripts. Of the tango, Borges did much to spread the idea that the sensual Argentine dance originated in brothels. In his drawing above of a tango-ing couple, he writes at the top (in Spanish): “The tango is a brothel dance. Of this I have no doubt.”
Borges would repeat this claim on many occasions. In his 1930 biography of Evaristo Carreiego, he writes, “my informants concur on one essential fact: the tango originated in the brothels.” Why this history so intrigued Borges I do not know, but I do know that he once collaborated with Argentine composer Astor Piazzola on an album of tangos in 1965. The drawing comes from the University of Notre Dame’s special collections (you can read a Spanish transcription of the rest of the text at their site).

Above, see another of Borges’ sketches, this one from the University of Virginia’s extensive Borges collection. The drawing appears in a manuscript titled “The Old Argentine Habit,” penned in 1946 and published (as “Our Poor Individualism”) in Borges’ 1952 essay collection Other Inquisitions. According to C. Jared Lowenstein, the drawing is titled in German, “Die Hydra der Diktator” (“The Hydra of the Dictators”) and depicts Rosas, Peron, Mussolini, Hitler, and Marx and is signed “Jorge Luis Borges 46.” Lowenstein writes:
The theme of the artwork is a stunning political statement by a writer who has often been deemed apolitical. It is also a remarkably detailed drawing, especially for someone who was losing his eyesight as Borges was at this time. This marvelous depiction supplements Borges’s declaration in his text that Argentineans see themselves as individuals, not as citizens of a specific nation.
It is indeed a remarkably detailed work. I only wish Borges had supplied illustrations for his Book of Imaginary Beings.

Barnes & Noble's Nook Business Is Shrinking

Tough times have hit Barnes & Noble, which released its fiscal 2013 fourth quarter and full-year earnings on Tuesday morning.
Earnings were disappointing across the board: Fourth quarter revenues (for the period ending April 27) amounted to $1.3 billion, a 7.4% decline from the same period a year before. Net losses hit $122 million — a sharp rise from the $9.7 million in losses reported in fiscal 2012 Q4. Full-year revenues decreased 4.1% to $6.8 billion, with net losses doubling to $118.6 million.
SEE ALSO: E-books Now Make Up 1/5 of U.S. Book Sales
Those declines are all the more troubling because they are caused not only by B&N's shrinking retail business — down 10% for the quarter and 5.9% for the full year — but also by the segment that is supposed to provide a ray of hope: its tablet and e-book business, Nook. Although sales of e-books and other types of digital content increased 16.2% for the year, outpacing the U.S. e-book industry, sales in the fiscal fourth quarter fell 8.9% due to decline in sales of Nook tablet and e-readers, and the lack of blockbuster trilogies like The Hunger Games and Fifty Shades of Grey, B&N said. Cassini captures gigantic hurricane on Saturn in exquisite detail
Jupiter's Great Red Spot may get most of the attention, but it's hardly the only big weather event in the Solar System. Saturn, for example, has an odd hexagonal pattern in the clouds at its north pole, and when the planet tilted enough to illuminate it, the light revealed a giant hurricane embedded in the center of the hexagon. Scientists think the immense storm may have been there for years.
But Saturn is also home to transient storms that show up sporadically. The most notable of these are the Great White Spots, which can persist for months and alter the weather on a planetary scale. Great White Spots are rare, with only six having been observed since 1876. When one formed in 2010, we were lucky enough to have the Cassini orbiter in place to watch it from close up. Even though the head of the storm was roughly 7,000 km across, Cassini's cameras were able to image it at resolutions where each pixel was only 14 km across, allowing an unprecedented view into the storm's dynamics.
The storm turned out to be very violent, with convective features as big as 3,000 km across that could form and dissipate in as little as 10 hours. Winds of over 400 km/hour were detected, and the pressure gradient between the storm and the unaffected areas nearby was twice that of the one observed in the Great Red Spot of Jupiter. By carefully mapping the direction of the winds, the authors were able to conclude that the head of the White Spot was an anti-cyclone, with winds orbiting around a central feature.

New iOS App Lets You Record What You Heard Five Minutes Ago
FordmadoxfraudOh man, this is so rad.

Have you ever wished that you could record something that already happened? Your kid’s first words. That perfectly timed comeback. The email address your boss told you to have those important documents sent to within the next 10 minutes. If only there was a way to record the important bits of your life, without having to record all of it.
That’s the idea behind Heard, a new app for iOS. Heard constantly records the audio around you into an ephemeral, self-destructing buffer, saving only those fleeting moments that you deem worthy.
Once you open Heard, it immediately begins recording everything within earshot of the iPhone’s microphone. Rather than dumping all of that audio into one incredibly boring and incredibly long file, though, Heard records into a constantly rotating buffer. If something happens that you just have to save, you pop into the app and tap a single button — boom, it’s recorded. Do nothing, and the buffer is erased, that audio instantly disappearing into the digital ether.
Heard will continue to record audio even when running in the background, albeit with a big ol’ red “RECORDING” banner placed up at the top of your screen.
Once recorded, clips can be named, tagged, emailed, or shared on Facebook.
Heard just launched late last week, and they’re testing a freemium model to begin with. Out of the box, the free app records up to 12 seconds of the past — not a whole lot, but enough to help you wrap your head around the concept. Pay $1.99 for the “Bigger Audio Buffer” in-app purchase, and you can bump the recording buffer up to 30 seconds, 1 minute, or 5 minutes.
Now, before you shout “OH MY GOD, SPY APP, NSA PRISM AGH!”, think about it: if someone is actively trying to record you saying something incriminating, this wouldn’t be a very good app for it. It would offer no advantage in that case over iOS’ built-in Voice Memo recorder — which, like this app, can record while running in the background — or even a cheapo tape recorder, but multiple disadvantages (the five minute limit, the need to tap the ‘save’ button without anyone noticing). Still, anyone using the app should always make sure everyone being recorded is fully aware; in some states, not doing so could get you into sticky legal situations.
You can find Heard in the app store, for free, here.
Trans Student Must Be Allowed to Use Girls' Restroom
In a decision the New York Times calls "sharply worded," the Colorado Civil Rights Division ruled that the Fountain-Fort Carson school district's decision to bar Coy Mathis from using the girls' restrooms "creates an environment that is objectively and subjectively hostile, intimidating or offensive."
Since 2008, Colorado has extended civil rights to transgendered individuals, specifically including the right to use gender-segregated facilities such as locker rooms and bathrooms without having to prove gender identity.

Security On the Brooklyn Bridge Kind of Lax Saturday
![]() |

- One, trucks aren't allowed on the Brooklyn Bridge.
- Two, if you see something, say something. The Brooklyn Bridge is high on the list of potential terrorist targets in New York City.
We all got excited and our friend called 9-1-1 at 2:35 p.m. to report the truck.
9-1-1 had no idea it was there, and said they would send someone. OK, fine.
We talked about all the expensive security cameras on the bridge and the NYPD cars parked at the entrances. "That's funny," we said. "Wonder why they let that big truck up on the bridge?"
Over the next half hour we kept checking the truck, waiting to see a car from the 84th Precinct come swooping up with a half a ton of bomb-sniffing equipment and maybe a team of dogs.
Nope.
Eventually, the truck started backing up very slowly. Our friend called 9-1-1 again. "That truck? The one on the bridge? It's backing up and maybe someone should help with traffic because it's going the wrong way and all."
9-1-1 said the 84th Precinct had been notified and someone would be there soon.
Finally, about an hour after our first call, NYPD stopped traffic onto the Manhattan-bound lanes and the truck successfully backed off the Brooklyn Bridge. We we happy that it turned out the truck wasn't stuffed with 3 tons of explosives, but if it had been it would have been a bad scene.
Still wondering about the security cameras and all.

WikiLeaks Rides the Snowden Train Back to Relevance City
FordmadoxfraudI mean, yes? But also, the leaking of information our masters would prefer to remain hidden from us IS relevant. The only reason it stopped being relevant is that people get bored with things that last more than two news cycles.

As National Security Administration leaker Edward Snowden engages in an international game of cat-and-mouse with reporters and governments, WikiLeaks and founder Julian Assange have swooped in to help. WikiLeaks' legal team is helping Snowden apply for asylum in Ecuador, WikiLeaks says it paid for his flight from Hong Kong and Assange himself took part in a Monday morning media call cementing WikiLeaks as the in-between for Snowden and the outside world.
Despite Snowden's choice to leak information to legacy media outlets instead of WikiLeaks, the organization is perfectly happy to support him. Why? WikiLeaks' mission includes protecting all whistleblowers — but under the surface is another explanation. Helping Snowden quickly brings WikiLeaks back into the headlines for something other than Assange's embarrassing year-long self-imprisonment in Ecuador's London embassy Read more...
