Fantasy Future Map: Los Angeles County Light Rail System from the Movie “Her”
I love it when I’m able to fulfill requests from readers. Here’s a note I got from an anonymous follower the other day:
The new movie “Her” is set in a futuristic LA with a very un-LA-like amount of public transport use and at one point includes a shot off to the side of the frame of a map showing a much, much bigger LA Metro rail network. Would love to see that on this site! Don’t suppose you have any connections in the movie business?
Not really, but luckily, the good people over at r/losangeles on Reddit have come to the rescue and posted this screenshot from the movie. By the looks of it, future LA has ripped up the entire current system and replaced it with a new one.
The map itself is a bit naff, with all sorts of weird angles in its lines (which also take some ridiculously circuitous routes to get where they’re going), angled text and strangely patterned background. There’s a definite Washington Metro map vibe to it with the thicker route lines and circular interchange station symbols – although the large red circles look more like the epicentre of a nuclear blast than a place to change trains. There’s also a station at the northern end of the “Orange Line” that seems to broadcast an awesome wi-fi signal.
I haven’t seen this intriguing-sounding film yet, but I’m guessing that this map is seen for a few fleeting seconds only and certainly isn’t meant to hold up to any in-depth scrutiny – it’s designed to set a mood, not define the transportation policy of a future Los Angeles.
For an interesting read about the movie’s portrayal of a public transit-oriented future in LA, see this Atlantic Cities article.

Snow vogue

This post is part of an ongoing series featuring items from the newly acquired Santo Domingo collection.
The depredations of the drug trade are fertile ground for crime and mystery fiction: pulp, in a word. In the Santo Domingo Collection, these lurid works stand on the shelves alongside opium-inspired poetry and countercultural acid narratives. Pictured here is Snow vogue, written by one Darcy Glinto and published in London by Wells Gardner in 1941. Copies are held at only three other libraries. It’s the tale of Dario, a ruthless gangster who, as the title suggests, gets involved in peddling cocaine. Violence, victimization, and death inevitably ensue. The jacket copy promises Snow vogue to be “just as slick and twice as fast as any other gangster story. That is because Dario was that kind of man.”
The name “Darcy Glinto” is, of course, too good to be true. It’s a pseudonym for Harold Ernest Kelly (1899-1969), an author and freelance journalist who wrote in the crime, sci-fi, and Western genres, among others, under a host of assumed names.

I don't check my google+, so I guess it's okay that people I don't give a fuck about send me messages there
Dante D’Orazio, reporting for The Verge:
A new Gmail setting lets you choose whether you want people to be able to send an email to your Google+ profile — even if they don’t have your email address in their contacts. […]
By default, the setting will allow anyone on Google+ to send you an email through Gmail. To be clear, Gmail users will be able to type anyone’s name into the recipient field and even if you don’t know that person’s email address. Google will auto-suggest the names of Google+ users, though your actual email address will not be revealed unless you reply to the email.
This has to be a mistake. Surely Google will change this from opt-out to opt-in.

Transgender teenager faces criminal charges after defending herself against bullies
Russian Sledges"it sends a message to bullies that you can bully individuals, and that adults will then further victimize the person that you’ve been tormenting"
is there anything that doesn't send that message, really?
A 16-year-old transgender teenager who says she has been repeatedly victimized by other students at her California high school is now facing a criminal charge for defending herself during a confrontation. The students who were allegedly harassing Jewelyes Gutierrez have not been charged.
The incident was captured on cellphone video, according to a report from KTVU.
"Jewelyes identifies as transgender, and I think that she had been tormented and harassed at school because of how she identifies," said Gutierrez's public defender, Kaylie Simon. "When I initially received this case, I was shocked that the district attorney's office decided to charge Jewelyes."
Gutierrez says she had previously gone to school officials seeking help, but the harassment persisted; when confronted by bullies once again, she says she decided to fight back.
The district attorney's office has not commented on the charges, but West Contra Costa School Board president Charles Ramsey says the case is not "something that should rise the level of where it has to go to the District Attorney's office for prosecution."

California Bans Workers From Touching Food With Bare Hands
If the gloves don't fit ...
A new revision to California state health code requires food-service workers to use gloves or utensils at all times when handling ready-to-eat food, a major shift from the previous, more-lenient policy. It's not unlike laws already in effect in New York, for example, and the state is even giving restaurants six months to adjust. But no four-star sushi master is going to be rolled out in rubber gloves, of course, so like any good law, there are loopholes: Bare-hand contact is allowed if management gets approval from health authorities, acknowledges liability, and imposes a strict regimen that includes "double hand washing," nail brush-scouring, post-scrubbing antiseptic, paid sick leave for employees, and more.
