This Is What Happens When You Put Dogs In A Photo Booth
Photographer Lynn Terry found out that placing two pit bulls in a photo booth is not a bad idea at all. With perfect timing, she managed to capture something really special – Bumper showed her affection for her friend Willis by licking him. This first photograph was shared thousands of times on social media.
Bumper was rescued from a dog fighter by the Mutts n Stuff pet shelter while Willis was born to a rescued dog that was one out of 500 dogs saved from a dog fighting ring bust in the summer of 2009, which was the biggest in the U.S.
The fun process and the popularity of the results of the first photo booth session inspired her to continue the project and capture more photo booth romances with other dogs.
Here are the beautiful images she got – they’re simply priceless!

A Fence of Mirrors Reflects the Changing Landscape

Created by artist Alyson Shotz, this reflective picket fence is made entirely of mirrors and has been installed in several locations since 2003. The iteration shown here was on view through 2012 at the Storm King Art Center in New York. The fence has the uncanny ability to reflect its surroundings resulting in a barrier that is at times almost completely camouflaged, or, depending on your perspective, in stark contrast to the nearby landscape. Massachusetts Is About to Ban 'Upskirting'
Russian Sledgesmultitask suicide called it
Shutterstock Just a day after Massachusetts' Supreme Judicial Court ruled that a man who took photos up a woman's skirt without her consent was not breaking the law, the state's Congress has passed a bill making the act illegal.
In a rare show of lawmakers getting something done quickly, the Senate and the House passed the bill with little to no resistance (the Senate, the AP reports, was unanimous in its vote). It will now go to Gov. Deval Patrick to sign into law, which could happen as soon as tonight.
Yesterday, Michael Robertson's lawyers successfully argued that the state's "Peeping Tom" law did not apply to upskirting, in part because the women he was accused of photographing were not "completely or partially undressed" but "fully clothed." Except for, you know, the parts of them that weren't.
Before all the gross people who take upskirt photos could grab their cameras and move to the state for some consequence-free creeping, the new bill was proposed and passed that will make the action illegal.
Anyone who photographs, videos or "electronically surveils" someone else's private areas without his or her consent will be charged with a misdemeanor and can be punished by up to two and a half years in jail and a $5,000 fine. If the victim is under the age of 18, it becomes a felony and the maximum jail time and fine double.
But some lawmakers aren't completely satisfied.
"What we didn't talk about yet are drones," Senate President Therese Murray said. "So now the drone issue will come up in the future also about privacy issues."

New Details About Amtrak's Writer's Residency
Associated Press Julia Quinn, Amtrak's Director of Social Media, did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) on Reddit today to discuss the company's writer's residency program. According to Quinn, Amtrak is still "formalizing" the official program, but she did offer a few new details.
- An online application process will go online some time in the next few days.
- Amtrak hopes to begin the official program this spring.
- Amtrak will use a panel comprised of individuals from Amtrak and the literary community to review resident applications.
- Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis.
- Writers' residencies will last 2-5 days, according to Quinn.
- Amtrak wants residents on each of its 15 long-distance routes.
Amtrak is still planning on running a program with a loose definition of "writer," as Quinn said, "The definition of a writer is pretty ambiguous and we think that is a good thing."
Obviously, a lot will remain up in the air until an official announcement from Amtrak (which will come soon apparently), but it's good to see Amtrak following through on its plans for a fleshed-out residency program.
These freezing puppies will bark all day until the fire is lit and then they huddle around it
If these adorable photos don’t melt your heart, then your middle name must be ‘Polar Vortex’. In a kitchen in Juilongjian Forest Park, Ruchen County, China, puppies huddle around a staff canteen stove to keep their cold little bodies warm and toasty. Despite their thick and fluffy fur, it’s still not enough to protect them from the freezing cold of winter, forcing them to stand as close to the ember as possible. The chefs who work in the kitchen even say these pups won’t stop barking until the fire is lit!

What to order at Hog’s Apothecary in Oakland
Russian Sledgesattn overbey
In today’s 96 Hours, Karen Reardanz hits up the bar at Hog’s Apothecary, the beer destination in Oakland’s Jewel Box area. It’s the months-old project from the team of Bradford Earle and John Streit, and comes with the delightful slogan “Locavore meets Locapour.” Accordingly, beer director Sayre Piotrkowski has assembled a masterful beer list, with 33 California beers on draft at any time, plus others in bottles. But, many of those beers comes from small producers, and not all patrons may be familiar with many of them.
So here are Reardanz’s recommendations on how to play Hog’s Apothecary correctly:
- Snag a stool at the bar.
- When browsing for a beer, find a style you’re looking for, and then ask for recommendations.
- For your second round, ask the bartender for a beer that’s a staff favorite. This might unearth a find like the Whippersnapper Southern English-style brown mild from Berryessa Brewing in Winters.
- Get food, because it’s good. In particular, order one of the sausage sandwiches. The menu is constantly changing, but if it’s there, a solid bet is the The Rocket Dog: wild arugula, grilled rapini and olivada.
- Another great way to take advantage of the beer knowledge at Hog’s Apothecary: Order one of the nightly flights. It’s a great way to discover new beers and beer producers, or perhaps taste the differences among similar styles.

San Francisco Ponders Rainbow-Colored Crosswalks
Russian Sledgesvia saucie
A first-time visitor to San Francisco's Castro district might think a bomb packed with rainbow paraphernalia had just exploded – light poles are draped with splashy banners, neon signs glow in restaurants, and a jumbo-sized flag flies above a public plaza.
Now the bowmageddon is primed to become complete, with a plan to bring in cheery new crosswalks striped with all the colors of the visible spectrum. If it happens, the Castro will become the only place in America where an honest-to-god meteorological rainbow could actually find camouflage.
The community voted a year ago to install some form of decorative crosswalks, to be funded by the Castro Community Benefit District, as part of a sidewalk-widening project. In addition to the prismatic crossings, voters could opt for other, less fantastic, designs, with one patterned like the foyer in the historic Castro Theater and the other mimicking catenary wires that hang above the streets. Public voting to choose a single winning design ended this week, and the top choice and location of the new crosswalks should be announced soon.
You would think that San Francisco, a city that originated the rainbow flag, would've done this years ago. But in fact, it was beat out by Vancouver (see the above photo), which installed rainbow crossings back in 2013 (and before that West Hollywood – thanks to commenter Martin for pointing that out). And perhaps surprisingly to people who don't live in the neighborhood and know it's provincial politics, not everybody is happy about these peacock-colored pathways. At the The Castro Biscuit, commenters have vented their spleen over the district's alleged transformation into a gaudy spectacle. "Please let’s not turn the Castro into a gay theme park," says one. "Bandanas really? I’m just going to be thinking hanky code every time I walk over it," quips another.
So what might the gayborhood's locals and tourist crowds soon be padding over? Here's the straightforward rainbow option (or as labeled, "Modern Art - Parallel Stripes"):
The theater-foyer design:
The rainbow bandanas!
And here's the electric-wire one, which a Castro Biscuit reader rather unfairly says "looks like one of the numerous drugged/drunk homeless in the area was given a paint brush and some free time."

Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto revealed after years of mystery (Updated)
Russian Sledgesvia overbey
"Ilene Mitchell says she isn't surprised her father would choose to stay under cover if he was the man behind this venture, especially as he is currently concerned about his health. 'He is very wary of government interference in general,' she says. 'When I was little, there was a game we used to play. He would say, 'Pretend the government agencies are coming after you.' And I would hide in the closet.'"

[UPDATE 4:15pm CT: Reporters across Los Angeles have been hounding the man Newsweek identified as Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto. He told reporters gathered at his front door that he is "not involved with Bitcoin." Andrea Chang, a Los Angeles Times reporter, said on Twitter that this Nakamoto later also denied having had any involvement with Bitcoin. We have a new story on Nakamoto's latest statements.]
The mysterious man behind the Bitcoin cryptocurrency has apparently been unmasked. An investigation by Newsweek tracked Satoshi Nakamoto to Temple City in California, revealing him to be a 64-year-old Japanese-American man whose creation of Bitcoin was a secret even to much of his family.
"For the past 40 years, Satoshi Nakamoto has not used his birth name in his daily life," Newsweek reporter Leah McGrath Goodman wrote. "At the age of 23, after graduating from California State Polytechnic University, he changed his name to 'Dorian Prentice Satoshi Nakamoto,' according to records filed with the US District Court of Los Angeles in 1973. Since then, he has not used the name Satoshi but instead signs his name 'Dorian S. Nakamoto.'"

Longitude bringing tropical cocktails to Oakland

Disco Volante. Photo: John Storey

Suzanne Long. Longitude. Get it?
Suzanne Long has broken her silence on what she’s up to in Oakland’s former Disco Volante space, which has been dark since last August.
Long, an East Bay bartender who spent three years making rum drinks at Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge in Alameda, is opening a cocktail bar this spring, to be named Longitude.
In her announcement, she describes the project as featuring a “large world whiskey and rum collection, and [her] special brand of tropical cocktails.” There will also be a full pub menu, drawing from cultures all over the world, from Africa to the Pacific.
Check out her personal website for some of the drinks she’s done in the past, like the Zimbabwe Cup (Cucumber, fresh mint, borage, sliced lemon wheels, sliced lime wheels, sliced orange wheels, starfruit, Ginger Syrup, Horned Melon Ice Cubes, Hendrick’s Gin, Carpano Antica, Rhum Clément Créole Shrubb, Soda Water), Wong’s Hangover Punch (Kauai Coffee whole bean medium roast, Cara Cara Orange Peels, Brut Champagne, Cinnamon Syrup, Fresh Ginger, Lemon Juice, Loomi, Pineapple Syrup, Raw Sugar, Thai Chili and Starfruit-infused Del Maguey Mezcal Vida, Whole Allspice, Batavia Arrack), and Finicky Finch (Ginger Syrup, Lime Juice, Pluot Puree, Hendrick’s Gin).
And if you’re curious about how exactly Disco Volante will be transformed into the adventure-themed Longitude, you can sneak a peek at the remodel — cheetah patterns, giraffes, grass huts — at the interior designer’s Facebook page here. Of course his name is Bamboo Ben.
