GlitchGIF

VJ application by UTAMI is designed to play and manipulate GIFs as visual content for a performance:

Create dynamic audio responsive visuals for live shows or at home with the lights off.

Easily apply unique effects: datamoshing, pixel drifting, feedback, and use our brand new algorithms to make GIFs melt, burn, and dance to your music.

Customize how GlitchGIF listens and responds to music. You can run it with sound from anywhere using your built-in mic, iTunes, Logic, Live, direct input, or any other audio source.

GlitchGIF has powerful listening technology that lets you work using just your laptop’s mic, even in noisy enviornments, so you can still get beat-reactive live visuals without a direct audio input.

Also included is a pack of GIFs created by Tumblr Radar recognized artist popsicle-illusion.

landscape #1

Installation by David Bowen is a depth camera placed in woodlands, transmitting a live feed of 3D information of area:

This work is a real-time video projection of point-cloud data streaming from a three-dimensional camera installed in an outdoor location. The video displayed consists of over 250,000 individual points, creating a 3D model of a living stand of trees. The color of the individual pixels shifts from blue to red to green in respect to their relative distance from the camera. This color shift illustrates the dynamic depth of the three-dimensional field giving the scene an artificial appearance and producing a formal contrast between the natural forms and the digital system collecting the data. As it monitors and collects real-time data from this location, the system relays an incomplete physical representation of a dynamic living landscape and fluid environmental conditions in digital form.

Elusive Red Sprite Seen From the Space Station

Let’s take a look back at our own planet for a moment with this stunning photo captured from the Space Station. This shot, taken on the night of Aug. 10, 2015, shows lightning flashes in thunderstorms over southern Mexico. Along the right edge bright red and purple streamers can be seen extending high into the atmosphere above a particularly powerful flash: a full-on “red sprite” caught on camera!

So-called because of their elusive nature, sprites typically appear as several clusters of red tendrils reaching upwards from the region of a lighting flash, extending as high as 55 miles (90 km) into the atmosphere. The brightest region of a sprite is usually around altitudes of 40-45 miles (65-75 km). They don’t last very long, 3-10 milliseconds at most, and so to catch one on camera is a real feat (or a great surprise!)

Sprites have been photographed from the ISS before (it’s a great place from which to observe these phenomena, which are often obscured by the storm clouds they occur above) but this is one of the best images I’ve seen yet.

And in case you’re wondering, that’s the Moon (not the Sun) lighting the star-filled sky, and the yellow-green light surrounding the planet isn’t the aurora – it’s airglow. A corner of an ISS solar array can be seen at the upper right too.

Read more about red sprites in an article I wrote for Discovery news here, and if you are really interested in them be sure to check out the PBS NOVA special “At the Edge of Space,” which highlights some of the best research done on sprites.
