Flashlight, flashlight, FLASHLIGHT!

by Iain

(…ok, ok, that’s the last time I’ll use that joke in my post titles, I promise!)

So at first glance this may just look like a couple of 70′s era space figs in a particularly greebly version of the classic LL928 Galaxy Explorer set. But take a closer look…

That’s right, those are GIANT mini-figs and one HUGE spaceship! Well actually they are LEGO spaceman LED flashlights and this crazy scene is brought to you by our very own Simon Liu, who was given the flashlights as gifts and figured this was the most logical thing to do with them.

Of course, the blue spaceman has been magically transformed into Benny from The LEGO Movie. And with the addition of Simon’s giant Unikitty, the scene now makes total sense… It’s obviously from the sequel, and this is our hero’s plan to deal with the giant monsters from Planet Duplo!

I was fortunate enough to drool all over marvel this at Brickworld Chicago a few weeks back, where Simon’s creation won the award for BEST SPACESHIP. Congratulations, Brother Si-MOCs! All that bribery and blackmail clearly paid off.

There’ll be no living with him now… :-)

Candid Videos Of Astronauts Being Dorks In Space Are Just Adorable

by Lauren Davis

What do the ISS astronauts do in their free time? Sometimes, they like to act out action movie scenes—and the part where a character falls to his death is much more fun in microgravity. That's when they aren't playing with their floating food or doing weightless backflips.

Japan's Live-Action Lupin the 3rd Movie Is Just Perfect

by Rob Bricken

If you're any kind of fan of Japan's beloved gentleman-thief, you probably had your doubts that the long-lived character (he's approaching 50!) could translate from anime to live-action. But thanks to Godzilla: Final Wars' Ryuhei Kitamura as the director, and a fabulous cast, the upcoming movie looks like it nailed it.

Finally: 3D Printed Personalized Earbuds

by General Fabb
Bunker.jordan

This is a fantastic and appropriate use for 3d printing!

ownphones.jpeg

OwnPhones will be the first venture to produce custom-fitting 3D printed earbuds.

There is a massive 3D printing industry today producing custom dental pieces. We believe custom earbuds could be a similarly large market, if OwnPhones can pull it off.

ownphones on.jpeg

Each earbud will be custom 3D printed based on a design obtained by 3D scanning your ear. It’s so personalized you’ll have to scan both your left AND right ears (assuming you have two). No more pain from awkwardly fitting mass-produced earbuds, as these will be built to fit ONLY you.

ownphones-model.jpg

The 3D scan will be performed by you through the use of an ingenious smartphone app. The app will measure the key dimensions of your ear components. As you can see in this image, the measurement will be done by including a standard coin in the image. (We’re wondering if this means you can use the app only in certain countries?)

The earbuds themselves will include wireless Bluetooth 4.0 and will be priced between USD$299-499. During the crowdfunding launch, we’re expecting the price to be as much as 50% off.

There will be three components to an OwnPhone: the internal custom structure that matches your ear; the standard electronics; and the exterior styled case. This is where OwnPhones will shine: you will be able to select from a huge variety of different colors and styles (including precious metals) to match every occasion.

That’s not all. The company also intends to provide an advanced service, OwnErgonomics, which will match the interior materials with your intended use (including physical activity, etc.) for maximum comfort and function. They say:

From the basic version, users can add OwnErgonomics, a system that allows them to specify their activity profile, whether running, snowboarding, parkour, etc.  With this information, OwnPhones then combines motion capture analysis data and a mechanical simulation for the selected activity to help determine the materials, some softer to act as a shock absorbing area and some more rigid to keep the earphones in place, needed to construct the earbuds so they stay snug and safe in the user's ear (according to the user's activities and intensity level).

Can you buy them today? Not yet, you’ll have to wait for their official launch in July. You might consider signing up for notification at their site.

Loki’s Chitauri Scepter

by Amy Ratcliffe

Loki's Chitauri Scepter

Loki’s primary weapon in The Avengers was a Chitauri Scepter. It has an elegant design, and Instructables user KyleofAsgard made one using a couple of types of foam (EVA and expanding), silicone, and Plaster of Paris among other materials. He started by scaling the scepter to the right size by using a grid. He then transferred the stencil to cardboard and covered both sides of the new cardboard template with expanding foam (specifics on doing that here). After he cut off the excess foam around the scepter template and shaped it, he covered it with Builder’s Bog:

Builders bog is a very popularly used costume/prop makers material, It takes 2 parts, the bog, and the hardner.

Usually for every golfball sized bit of bog you use, you would squeeze a 25mm line of hardner from the tube to mix with the bog.

What you are going to do here is basically cover your entire foam sculpt of your staff in bog, a really easy way of doing this is to wear latex gloves and use your hands, If you dont have gloves, then usually covering your hands in canola oil will do the trick to stop it sticking.

Make sure that you give your model atleast a 3mm thick coat all the way around ‘minimal’, Ideally if you can make it 4 or 5mm then you will have a stronger finished product after sanding. The cleaner you can put this bog on, the easier detailing will become.

China building world’s largest 3D printer to construct houses, from 3ders.org:

…Qingdao Unique Products Develop Co Ltd, a local maker of 3-D printers, has unveiled the world’s largest 3D printer last week at the 2014 World 3D Printing Technology Industry Conference and Exhibition held in Qingdao.

This massive 3D printer has a build volume of 12 m x 12 m x 12 m. According to Wang Hong, company’s founder and CEO, the company has spent the last 6 months developing this giant printer. It weighs more than 120 tons and was assembled using cranes and other machines.

The giant 3D printer is currently placed in the High-tech Zone of local 3D Printing Industrial Park and will be open to the public. Its first task is to print a seven-meter high “Temple of Heaven”, the largest extant sacrificial temple in China, using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process.

One notable advantage of this new printer is its use of graphene glass fiber reinforced plastic as 3D printing materials, which is light weight, strong, corrosion-resistant, and environmentally friendly….

Attack on Titan was developed into an anime television series last year, and since then I’ve seen several cosplayers dressed like characters from the series. If you’ve been considering becoming a female Titan or a Colossus Titan, YouTube user iwanted2c1video is here to help. She goes through application step by step and makes the process look manageable. For the female Titan, she used the following supplies:

Mehron Berry Red and Red
Wolfe White, Ivory and Black Face Paint
Concrete Minerals Matte Pro eyeshadow in Risque and Jet
BH Cosmetics 168 Eyeshadow Palette (Red, Brown eyeshadows)

The FBI’s 3D Printer

by General Fabb
Bunker.jordan

This printer is *not* ideal for printing guns... the materials are UV cured, meaning parts become more brittle when exposed to sunlight over time. In addition, the material is ridiculously expensive ($600/kg, about one third of which is wasted in purge cycles between prints), and you can only buy it from Objet licensed reseller companies.

This is not the kind of printer that someone trying to covertly make guns would use...

Also, $19,000 + material costs would buy a lot of guns. Also also, if the intent is to make plastic guns, I still traditional subtractive manufacturing processes are the better option.

My opinion: This is the FBI making it look like they care about 3d printed weapons.

objet24.jpg

The US FBI has acquired an Objet24 commercial 3D printer. What would they be doing with it?

Evidently, according to a report on Ars Technica, they want to “support the advanced technical exploitation of evolving and existing high technology explosive devices.”

Yep, making bombs and guns.

We suspect they want to know their enemy by performing the same tasks. However, we’re suspicious that a terrorist may own a USD$19,000 3D printer, with significant costs for resin material to operate it.

Nevertheless, the FBI has likely made a good choice of printer. As you might expect, the FBI would have high technical and security standards to meet for any equipment acquisition. Technically, the Objet24 can produce strong parts at a very high resolution as low as 28 microns (0.028mm). This means they can print devices with moving parts and very neatly fitting components. We’re not certain, but the printer could be ideal for printing guns.

Made In Space Soon Will Be

by General Fabb
MIS_Printer_black.jpg

This August you’ll see a real 3D printer operating in outer space. The folks at Made In Space announced their space-capable 3D printer will fly on the SpaceX Dragon CRS-4 flight this summer.

The company has been working towards this goal for several years, gradually designing an extrusion-based 3D printer that meets NASA performance and safety flight specifications. They’ve had to overcome a long list of challenges, including: operation in microgravity; thermal safety; vibration avoidance; nano particle vapor capture; and more. Now, they say they’ve met “all milestones with minimal risk.”

Like any machine or human sent to orbit, specific work has been scheduled. The printer will produce a set of 21 test objects, followed by a variety of other items in order to see how well the printer operates on the International Space Station. Test objects will be brought down to earth to be examined by (presumably) NASA’s 3D printing scientists. We’re anxious to see how this plays out.

Meanwhile, we’re also wondering about Made In Space the company. You gotta figure they don’t really have a very large market, there being only one space station at this time. The project is certainly interesting, but how will this benefit you?

We suspect there could be spinoffs. The technology invented by Made In Space may translate into useful features for ground-based 3D printers. For example, how’d you like to have a 3D printer that doesn’t vibrate at all? Is less noisy? Emits no fumes?

Those are benefits that all 3D printers should have.

Despite a waistline of 2.2 inches, the One can scan paper sizes up to A4/US Letter on battery power — in full color and at 300 dpi...
