On Friday, Netflix will release a drama expressly designed to be consumed in one sitting: “House of Cards,” a political thriller starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. Rather than introducing one episode a week, as distributors have done since the days of black-and-white TVs, all 13 episodes will be streamed at the same time. “Our goal is to shut down a portion of America for a whole day,” the producer Beau Willimon said with a laugh.

“House of Cards,” which is the first show made specifically for Netflix, dispenses with some of the traditions that are so common on network TV, like flashbacks. There is less reason to remind viewers what happened in previous episodes, the producers say, because so many viewers will have just seen it. And if they don’t remember, Google is just a click away.

The story is here.  You can buy an entire book at once, as serialization — while not dead — has ceased to be the norm for long novels.  At MOMA they do not run an art exhibit by putting up one new van Gogh painting each day.  Coursera, you will note, still uses a kind of serialization model for its classes rather than putting up all the lectures at once; presumably it wishes to synchronize student participation plus it often delivers the content in real time.  Sushi is served sequentially, even though several cold courses presumably could be carried over at once.  Still, a plate in an omakase experience typically has more than one piece of fish.

For TV I do not think upfront bingeing can become the norm.  The model of “I don’t really care about this, but I have nothing much to talk to you about, so let’s sit together and drop commentary on some semi-randomly chosen TV show” seems to work less well when the natural unit of the show is thirteen episodes and you are expected to show dedication.

Ad-financed shows — still a clear majority of viewing — may prefer to have impressions from the ads spread out over weeks and months rather than concentrated in one long marathon sitting.  Furthermore the show itself relies more heavily on an effective and immediate burst of concentrated marketing, with little room to build word of mouth and roll out a campaign with stages.  That intense publicity can be achieved the first time this model is tried, as everyone will write about the novelty, but it will be harder to summon up interest for successive experiments in this format.

I do not myself enjoy the marathon approach to TV shows, as I prefer to ponder the episodes over weeks, months, or years.  I rebel against watching even two episodes in a row, no matter how much I enjoy the program.  Nonetheless I hope this model succeeds, as I have the self-control to watch only one episode a week or at some otherwise chosen regular pace.

Apesar de hoje nerds serem criaturas sem-graça, raivosas e que xingam muito no Twitter, no passado tinham verdadeiro senso de humor, mesmo os que participavam do programa espacial.

Um bom exemplo são os palhaços que incluiram nas checklists dos astronautas da Apollo XII fotos de coelhinhas da Playboy. Já Neil Armstrong e seus amigos preencheram formulário da Alfândega, indicando como local de origem Lua, e declarando “pedras e amostras de poeira lunar” no campo “carga”.

Mesmo casos mais sérios acabam tendo um engraçadinho. O mais sério deles foi a Apollo XIII, que depois da explosão de um tanque de Oxigênio teve que fazer uma manobra de emergência para voltar em segurança.

Aqui cabe uma breve explicação: Estes são os dois componentes principais da Apollo:

O negócio com patas, que pousa, é chamado Módulo Lunar. O que parece minimamente um foguete, é chamado Módulo de Comando. O Módulo Lunar só é usado depois da nave estar em órbita da Lua. É planejado para pousar e só. Seu motor só funciona uma vez. a pare do módulo que decola é outra.

Com a explosão no módulo de comando, não ousaram religar os motores, então toda a manobra de retorno foi feita com o Módulo Lunar, que não havia sido projetado para isso, mas funcionou perfeitamente.

Como todo projeto de governo, a Apollo era uma missão cheia de componentes criados por fabricantes diferentes, e sempre rolava uma competição, amigável ou não. Por isso um engraçadinho na Grumman, que projetou o Módulo Lunar, não pensou duas vezes: Mandou para a Rockwell, construtora do Módulo de Comando, a seguinte fatura:

324 mil dólares (em 1970, uma boa grana) que cobriam o custo do reboque, afinal o Módulo Lunar empurrou o Módulo de Comando de volta para a Terra. E como os astronautas se refugiaram no ML, também cobraram pela hospedagem, ar-condicionado e pela carga da bateria do MC.

O custo foi até baixo, US$1,00 por milha.

A Rockwell levou a “sério”, mandando a conta pra auditoria. Ao final responderam que como eles nunca tinham cobrado por rebocarem o Módulo Lunar até a Lua, nas Apollos XI e XII, ficaria tudo elas por elas.

Even on Mars.

Nine years (and three days) ago, on January 24, 2004, Mars Opportunity began its mission on the surface of the red planet.

Despite plenty of advance testing here on Earth and countless simulations anticipating what Opportunity would face, no one quite knew exactly how the rover would perform once it arrived on the Martian surface. And at a typical distance of over 20 light-minutes from its controllers, it needed to be able to make its own driving decisions and maneuvers.

And designed for a 90-day mission and 2.5 million turns of its wheels, powered by its on-board solar panels, only time would tell exactly what Opportunity would actually wind up doing.

But it’s been more than 3000 days, over 70 million turns of its wheels, and a lifetime’s worth of discoveries that make Opportunity the most successful planetary science mission of all-time. And it’s still going. The panorama above — shown in both true color (top) and false color (bottom) to highlight the different features in the terrain — is just one of a myriad of images from this unforgettable mission.

While the world has moved on to focus on Curiosity, the latest generation of Mars rover, Opportunity is still going strong, and has a lifetime of achievement behind it. Let’s take a look back.

Since it began its journey at Eagle Crater on Mars in 2004, Opportunity has taken an unprecedented journey to some spectacular places, including Endurance crater,

where Opportunity was able, for the first time, to take a look at some of the sedimentary history of the Martian surface. The hills and cliffs inside this crater are so steep that pieces of Mars’ geological history were revealed, as the photo of Burns cliff inside the crater shows.

It also visited a slew of other interesting features, including the beautiful Erebus crater,

and in the area surrounding Victoria, Opportunity found “Martian blueberries,” or hematite spheres that look to be evidence of past water on Mars.

Blueberries were found at other sites, too, but after visiting Victoria crater, the decision was made that Opportunity would run the first Mars-half-marathon, and head to the gigantic Endeavour crater, despite the fact that its solar panels were only operating at 50%, thanks to being covered in years of Martian dust.

But a simple gust of wind came along and partially cleared off the panels, giving the eponymous rover the opportunity to make the spectacular journey in less time than anyone had anticipated.

Last year, during Martian winter, it took the most spectacular panorama of its entire journey: an 817-image-composite of Greeley Haven.

And the journey continues. The half-marathon has pushed Opportunity’s total mileage up over 22 miles so far, which means that later this year, if all goes well, it should become the most-traveled vehicle on any world beyond Earth, breaking the 30+ year old record held by a Russian lunar rover.

And if you want to know what a 3-year, half-marathon journey looks like, from Victoria to Endeavour craters, the Opportunity team has put a spectacular video together.

So the next time you think of Mars, don’t just think about Curiosity and the latest, newest, shiniest thing to see. Remember her much older sister, Opportunity, still chugging away and finding things we’ve never expected, from mineral veins to evidence for past water.

It’s the longest-running-rover in history, and it’s still full of life. As she enters her tenth year on the red planet, don’t forget about Opportunity, the Methuselah of Mars!

2013 tem tudo para ser um ano memorável para os amantes de filmes de ficção científica como eu. Existe um número considerável de produções bastante interessantes (e pasmem, com roteiro original!) que vão ganhar as telas ano que vem que parecem apresentar o que o gênero tem de melhor: efeitos especiais espetaculares, ótimas histórias e ideias instigantes.
Mas como estamos falando de Hollywood, não podemos escapar dos filmes de super-heróis, que nem são vistos mais como ficção científica e podem ser considerados como um gênero em si. O ano estará repleto de filmes desse tipo, mas dois me despertam especial interesse: o novo HOMEM DE FERRO, dirigido pelo sempre criativo Shane Black, que parece que terá um tom mais dark para redimir o personagem do péssimo segundo filme; e MAN OF STEEL, com Zack Snyder (muito muito medo) agora tomando as rédeas da história do Superman.




No terreno das adaptações literárias, uma que é muito aguardada é ENDER'S GAME, baseada no bastante popular livro de Orson Scott Card sobre crianças treinadas em jogos de guerra para defender a Terra de um ataque alienígena. Eu confesso que li o livro recentemente e achei bem ruim. Além disso, o diretor Gavin Hood é o mesmo do péssimo WOLVERINE. O elenco, porém é interessante, com Harrison Ford, Viola Davis e o menino Asa Butterfield (o HUGO CABRET) como o protagonista.

Falando em filme aguardadíssimo, esse ano também será lançado o segundo STAR TREK, com o subtítulo INTO DARKNESS. Novamente dirigido por J.J. Abrams, que já fez um excelente trabalho com o primeiro filme da nova série, essa produção vem com uma tonelada de expectativas com relação ao personagem de Benedict Cumberbatch, que não tenho dúvidas virará uma super-mega-estrela assim que o filme estrear. 

Já Guillermo Del Toro lançará seu projeto de estimação PACIFIC RIM, que pelo trailer parece uma mistura de "Power Rangers" com TRANSFORMERS. Me pareceu meio bobo e voltado exclusivamente pra um público pré-adolescente, mas posso me surpreender. E tem Idris Elba, que melhora qualquer filme.

Tom Cruise, que sempre que se aventura pela ficção científica faz filmes interessantes, estrelará OBLIVION, de Joseph Kosinski (diretor do mais recente TRON). Quem já leu o roteiro diz que é uma mistura de WALL-E com MATRIX, já que o personagem de Cruise é uma espécie de "faz-tudo" numa Terra pós-apocalíptica, mas que descobre que nem tudo é o que parece. Muitas reviravoltas são aguardadas na história, especialmente devido ao personagem de Morgan Freeman. Estou curioso por esse, até porque o visual é bem interessante.

Quem está saindo das cinzas é M. Night Shyamalan. Finalmente apenas como diretor de um filme (nem encostou no roteiro dessa vez), parece que ele é apenas um contratado em mais um veículo para o star power de Will Smith. Porém, como andam dizendo por aí, Smith mal aparece no filme para dar lugar a seu filho, Jaden Smith, que parece já tem uma carreira toda organizada como futura estrela de Hollywood. O filme conta a história de um pai e um filho cuja nave espacial cai no planeta Terra pós-destruição da humanidade. Vamos ver se Shyamalan retorna à boa forma.

Porém, nem tudo é seriedade nas produções de ficção científica para 2013. Edgar Wright retoma a parceria com Simon Pegg e Nick Frost (que já rendeu os ótimos TODO MUNDO QUASE MORTO e CHUMBO GROSSO) em mais uma paródia de um gênero cinematográfico específico. Dessa vez, eles vão falar do apocalipse e parece que a turma de Pegg, Frost & companhia serão os únicos capazes de salvar a humanidade. Vamos ver no que dá.

Vocês já devem ter percebido que a temática principal desses filmes é o fim do mundo (o que dá um estudo interessante, aliás). Talvez o filme que lide com esse elemento de forma mais interessante é ELYSIUM de Neil Blogkamp. Como já visto em seu filme anterior, DISTRITO 9, o diretor parece gostar de usar elementos da ficção científica para discutir questões sociais e políticas. Em ELYSIUM, temos uma Terra em ruínas habitada por uma população destituída, enquanto os abastados vivem em uma estação espacial. É um dos filmes que mais quero ver ano que vem e o elenco é interessantíssimo: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Diego Luna, além dos brasileiros Wagner Moura, Alice Braga e Sonia Braga!

A produção de ficção científica mais aguardada por mim em 2013 é GRAVITY, de Alfonso Cuarón. O cara já fez um novo clássico em FILHOS DA ESPERANÇA, mas em GRAVITY ele parece que vai levar o cinema a um novo patamar. O filme ia estrear em 2012 e encabeçou a minha lista de filmes mais aguardados desse ano, mas a pós-produção atrasou e pelo visto vai estrear no fim do ano que vem. GRAVITY tem no elenco apenas Sandra Bullock e George Clooney como astronautas que se encontram em uma missão espacial que dá errado, e dizem por aí que em termos técnicos vai ser uma revolução no nível de AVATAR. Cuarón nunca me decepcionou e vamos ver se nem Sandra Bullock vai estragar o que parece ser um filmaço.

Matt Damon tasted sweet revenge last night on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!

After five years of being the butt of Jimmy Kimmel’s signing off gag, “Apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time,” which has escalated over the years into full-on video wars  — finally, Damon returned the favor.

A teaser for the payback ran on Thursday morning. Featuring Matt Damon as a twisted kidnapper who had tied up Kimmel in a chair with duct tape, the actor asked:

“Is there a new host in town and his initials are M.D. That’s right, the doctor is on.”

So, to Thursday’s show.

“Welcome to tonight’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Sucks!,” Damon greeted the audience, while a tied up Kimmel watched silently from the back of the stage.

“Just for starters, let me ask you guys this: As an audience, is it weird to see a person with actual talent host this show?” the actor went on.”I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long, long time. This is like the time I lost my virginity, except this is going to last way longer than one second.”

A roll-call of huge stars then stopped by to praise Damon and throw Kimmel under a proverbial bus.

E! reports that Kimmel’s loyal sidekick Guillermo was replaced by Andy Garcia. Sheryl Crow took over for band leader Cleto Escobedo III, and at the end of Damon’s host monologue, Robin Williams walked on to close it.

Ben Affleck, long-time friend of Damon and newly anointed director of note, also showed up to put a spanner in Damon’s takeover.

To hilarious effect, Affleck held up cue cards stating Kimmel was funny, good, smart, good to his family, and “an excellent lover.”

At one point, Damon said of the new show, “This is unbelievable. It took Jimmy 10 years to accomplish what I just accomplished in 90 seconds.”

Later, Damon explained to the audience that the reason for the “hatred and bitterness” between him and Kimmel, was his success as an actor and Kimmel’s failed attempts to compete.

That, of course, was the set-up for a medley of Kimmel auditioning for movies such as Good Will Hunting, Stuck on You, The Bourne Ultimatum, Adjustment Bureau, Happy Feet 2, and We Bought a Zoo.

Later, more stars turned up in the shape of Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, Reese Witherspoon, Demi Moore, and Gary Oldman. One and all piled in on Kimmel with stories that varied on a theme of how inferior as a host he was.

Sally Fields, Robert De Niro, and Oprah echoed the joke in recorded messages, and the fun continued with Kimmel’s parents and Don Cheadle who also appeared via video.

To Damon, Cheadle said: “Thank you for allowing America to laugh again,” while Kimmel’s parents told Damon that he was “the son we always wanted.”

Final moments on the show went to Kimmel’s real-life ex-girlfriend, Sarah Silverman. Most will remember Silverman and Damon’s infamous 2008 video in 2008 — “I’m F*****g Matt Damon”— which went viral.

After comparing Kimmel to a rotten hot dog , Damon asked her: “Is there anything you’d like to say to Jimmy?”

Silverman paused for drama, before replying, “No, I’m good.”

At the end of the show, Damon’s delivered his  inevitable parting shot to Kimmel, asking:

“Is there anything you want to say before we wrap things up? Wait, I’m sorry, we’re out of time.”

Kimmel promised revenge during the show’s airing, tweeting, “You win this round Matt Damon. But I will win the war.”

The Associated Press notes Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s new schedule is 11:35 pm ET/PT, putting the 45-year-old host head to head with Jay Leno and David Letterman.

An unofficial, but fully functional release of XBMC should make the uber-popular media center software work with almost all Android devices. About six months ago the developers of XBMC announced that it had been ported for Android. That was true, but there was one caveat. The port was made functional on one specific Android device. The hardware company Pivos paid for the devs to add support for their Xios DS device. Although that build could be run on other Android devices, the hardware video acceleration could only be use if it was the same as the Xios. When not using the hardware acceleration many common video formats would only play at a few frames per second, if at all.

This build is a workaround and is not officially supported. What it brings to the table is the ability to use an external media player with XBMC. This way any video format which your Android device is capable of playing (with hardware acceleration) can be launched from XBMC but will be played by the native video application. We haven’t tried it for ourselves. If you have we’d love to hear about your experience in the comments.

As you may guess we are receiving tons of emails with feature requests, and to make those easier to track we have configured a special feedback page. Go ahead and check it out - you can submit new feature requests as well as vote for existing ones. Also this now gives us lots of visibility into what our users really want, so we can spend our time on what’s important first. Keep your voices coming, but please avoid creating duplicate issues (we hate deleting them).

During past months we have mostly been busy refactoring our database backend. This is not something that you can see, but it helped us cut some hardware costs and will ensure that we can scale as fast as our user base grows. We also implemented some minor features you’ve been asking about - reverse post sorting and new passwordless Pocket integration. (You will need to check your Settings menu for that).

You might have also noticed a new image that says Unteleported on our main page. Don’t get scared, as we have not got bought by an evil corporation just yet. We have been discussing various ways to cover our increasing hardware costs, and we liked the idea of being sponsored by cool companies we can relate to. Unteleported is the first of such companies - they are our good old friends, a team of software development professionals (hey, our only real software engineer works there!) who agreed to partially cover our bills. Na fábrica, uma das gags é uma máquina que pega uma tora inteira, a enfia em um apontador gigante e sai com um… palito de dente. Claro, é um pouco exagerado, o desperdício na vida real não deve chegar a tanto, mas pelo menos é bem mais simples.

No vídeo abaixo uma empresa indiana demonstra sua solução para fabricação de palitos de dente. Admito que são bonitos, melhores que os nossos, mas a madeira (jã cortada) passa por SEIS máquinas antes de virar um palito, só não passa por mais um ainda por ser mais barato colocar o pequeno Mohinder para empacotar os palitos.

É interessante para vermos como as coisas mais simples da vida podem ser, se não complicadas, trabalhosas, mas o mais interessante mesmo é imaginar que se no desenho da Warner mostrassem toda essa complicação, acharíamos que era só brincadeira.

Toda hora que a gente faz post sobre algum microPC, aparece um chato pra reclamar que são caros, que monta-se coisa melhor por menos, etc. O fato de o sujeito ser chato não quer dizer que esteja errado, e realmente microPCs são legais na teoria apenas.

Agora parece que a coisa mudou. A VIA lançou o APC Paper, um sistema integrado Android que vem com uma case bem original: Disfarçada de livro, com 204 mm x 98 mm x 28 mm.

O bicho roda Android 4.0 otimizado para o processador ARM Cortex-A9 de 800MHz. Tem 512MB de DDR3, 4GB de Flash, toca vídeo 1080p via HDMI. Tem duas portas USB 2.0, slot microSD e Ethernet 10/100 Mb/s.

Não é máquina pra rodar AutoCAD, mas é máquina pra rodar um Media Centre, ficar na estante e ninguém nunca adivinhar onde está sem computador.

Agora o efeito anti-chato: O APC Paper custa US$99,00. Se quiser só a placa-mãe, a mordida é de meros US$79,00.

The FBI calls it a “sensitive investigative technique” that it wants to keep secret. But newly released documents that shed light on the bureau’s use of a controversial cellphone tracking technology called the “Stingray” have prompted fresh questions over the legality of the spy tool.

Functioning as a so-called “cell-site simulator,” the Stingray is a sophisticated portable surveillance device. The equipment is designed to send out a powerful signal that covertly dupes phones within a specific area into hopping onto a fake network. 

The feds say they use them to target specific groups or individuals and help track the movements of suspects in real time, not to intercept communications. But by design Stingrays, sometimes called “IMSI catchers,” collaterally gather data from innocent bystanders’ phones and can interrupt phone users’ service—which critics say violates a federal communications law. The FBI has maintained that its legal footing here is firm. Now, though, internal documents obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, a civil liberties group, reveal the bureau appears well aware its use of the snooping gear is in dubious territory...

It’s likely that in the months ahead, a few more interesting nuggets of information will emerge. The FBI has told EPIC that it holds a mammoth 25,000 pages of documents that relate to Stingray tools, about 6,000 of which are classified. The Feds have been drip-releasing the documents month by month, and so far there have been four batches containing between 27 and 184 pages each. Though most of the contents—even paragraphs showing how the FBI is interpreting the law—have been heavy-handedly redacted, several eyebrow-raising details have made it through the cut.
