Trump Supporters Spent The Debate Tweeting At Jon Lester Because They Thought He Was Moderator Lester Holt

by Barry Petchesky
Christopher.kantos

this is amusing.

Jon Lester is expected to be the Cubs’ Game 1 starter when the NLDS kicks off at Wrigley on Friday against either the Mets or Giants. That’s Jon Lester. Not NBC anchor Lester Holt, who is old and who scouts say has 55 command at best, barely fourth-starter potential. Just so we’re clear.

Wayde Van Niekerk's Run Was Historic In At Least Four Ways

by Sarah Barker
Christopher.kantos

Not sure if you are following track, but his coach is his 74 year old great grandmother

South African Wayde van Niekerk’s Olympic gold medal and beautiful world record in the 400 meters could hardly get any sweeter. Out of lane eight—few win out of lane eight, much less set a world record, because other competitors are behind the lane eight runner until they hit the last straight, when it’s often too late to respond—this nice young man (he’s only 24) ran away from his boyhood idols, broke Michael Johnson’s 19-year-old record for the one-lap race, and looked good doing it. 43:03 is the new mark he established, a breath away from previously unthinkable 42-second territory.

A Superstitious Fisherman Kept This $100 Million Pearl Under His Bed

by Darren Orf
Christopher.kantos

I did not know 500 pound giant clams existed.

According to city government officials in Puerto Princesa City, Philippines, a local fisher just dropped off this monster of a pearl to a local tourism office. If legit, it would far surpass the current Guinness record holder, the Pearl of Lao Tzu, at a comparatively measly 14 pounds, which also came from the Philippines.

Your Avocado Toast Habit Is Killing Butterflies, Says The Guardian — Food News

by Faith Durand

Get off my lawn, Guardian.

You knew it was coming: trouble in avocado-ville. The craze for avocados has caused avocado exports to jump tenfold in the last decade, according to a piece in The Guardian that has the avocado-lovers of the internet in a tizzy. Higher prices mean greater incentive for growers in parts of Mexico, and they are intensifying avocado farming in ways that thin native forests and reduce habitat for the monarch butterfly.

So should we all immediately swear off avocados and pay penance to the butterflies? It's not so simple.

90-year-old fills in $90,000 crossword art, now claims copyright

by Carla Sinclair

crossword

Last month, a 90-year-old woman visiting an art museum in Nuremberg, Germany was drawn to a 1977 crossword puzzle on display called "Reading-work-piece." Next to the artwork, created by avant-garde artist Arthur Köpcke, was a sign that said, "Insert Words." The visitor took the sign seriously and began filling out the puzzle with a ball point pen.

Police rushed to the scene and questioned the senior citizen, whose name has been released as Hannelore K. She said the museum should have warned visitors not to fill in the puzzle, and the police let her go.

But now the woman is threatening to sue the museum for cleaning up her additions to the art piece. She claims that she now holds the copyright to the "collaborative" artwork, since she enhanced it, but the museum destroyed her creative work by restoring the piece to its original state.

...her lawyer has produced a seven-page rebuttal to the accusation of damaging property.

He says that far from harming the work in question, his client has increased its value by bringing the relatively-unknown Köpcke to the attention of a wider public. Moreover, her "invigorating re-working" of the exhibit further increased its worth.

Indeed, Frau K.'s lawyer claimed that her additions meant that she now held the copyright of the combined artwork—and that, in theory, the private collector might sue the museum for destroying that new collaboration by restoring it to its original state.

The art is said to be valued at around $90,000. Read the full story at Ars Technica.

Best design for a milk bottle

by Mark Frauenfelder
Christopher.kantos

very cool

milk-bottle

The Imedia Creative Bureau in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan designed this concept cow-swiping-UFO milk bottle.

From Imedia:

We are trying to tend to come up with original and smart packaging or product designs. So this time the task was to create a milk package unlike anything on market shelves.

We wanted to find very abstract or distant association with milk and cow.

Cow being abducted by UFO is pretty common used image in pop-culture. But it was very unexpected idea for milk bottle. So we begun working on it. At first we sketched the shape of the bottle and its proportions. Then Kanat (our 3D designer) started to model the bottle while the rest of the team were looking for appropriate naming. We had some cool names like Cowsmilk (which reads like “cosmic”), Mimimilk and among them was Molocow.

As you know “moloko” is a Russian word but thanks to outstanding director Stanley Kubrick everybody knows this word, we suppose. Also we wanted to pay tribute to Stanley Kubrick’s greatest movie “Orange clockwork”, and “Space Odyssey – 2001″ which is sci-fi classic. We were happy with the product name.

Kanat worked on this project for a month roughly. He’s done the visuals very well that some could take them as real ones.

Illinois gun shop raffles AR-15 rifle to benefit Orlando victims

by Mark Frauenfelder
Christopher.kantos

this is kinda weird.

Video screen grab from ABC 7

"We don't believe this is a gun issue, this is a terrorism issue and this is an act against American citizens," says Bert Irslinger, Jr., owner of Second Amendment Sports, a gun shop in McHenry, Illinois. Irslinger said he is going to donate $2,000 in addition to the raffle sales for an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle raffle to the OneOrlando Fund. The mass murderer used an AR-15 to kill victims of the Pulse nightclub massacre. From ABC 7:

Kathleen Larimer of Crystal Lake is also upset. Her son John was among the 12 people shot and killed in the 2012 Colorado movie theater massacre.

"If you lose somebody to drunk driving, you wouldn't raise money by raffling off cases of alcohol. It's just, it's wrong. It's in poor taste," she says.

New message from Zodiac killer was actually class project

by David Pescovitz
Christopher.kantos

more zodiac. also this is really weird.

635972868683526089--Zodiac-

Police in Tallahassee, Florida were on high alert after a message appeared on a sidewalk that looked very similar to the writing and cryptograms written by the Zodiac serial killer in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Northern California. The Zodiac Killer's identity is still unknown. Here's the message:

“You were wrong. I am not dead or in the hospital. I’m alive and well and I’m going to start killing again."

Turns out, the message was part of an assignment on serial killers and drug cartels in a Florida State University class. According to the Tallahassee Democrat, "the assignment was to write a message in a public forum, take a picture and send it to (professor Iheoma) Nwachukwu.

From the Tallahassee Democrat:

On Friday, someone reported seeing the message and called police.

Meanwhile, the student who wrote the message had left for a weekend trip. She returned and on Tuesday called police after seeing flyers alerting Luxe residents to it and seeing it reported on the news.

She told police she and her roommate wrote the message but left in the pouring rain thinking the chalk would wash away.
