Woman ejected from plane for singing Whitney Houston
Steve DyerGuys isn't it suspicious that they didn't show the person's face (this was me)
ABC News: "An American Airlines flight was forced to make an emergency landing when a female passenger refused to stop singing Whitney Houston songs."
Come for the rendition of "I will always love you", stay for the bogus and futile "DO NOT TAKE PICTURES ON THE AIRPLANE!" demands from the flight crew. [Thanks, Michelle Fox!]![]()

ABC Unveils Its Fall Schedule
Steve DyerAt least Rebel has a show, even if Mulaney didn't get picked up.
Following NBC and Fox unveiling their Fall 2013 schedules over the past couple days, ABC has done so too as upfronts week, during which networks present their new shows to advertisers, continues. Of note to comedy fans is that the new sitcoms The Goldbergs, starring Wendi McLendon-Covey and Jeff Garlin, and Trophy Wife, starring Malin Akerman and Bradley Whitford, are being put in the Tuesday 9pm block where Happy Endings and Don't Trust the B—- were last season. They'll have a much stronger lead-in than those shows had, though, with the high-profile Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airing right before them instead of the anemic Dancing with the Stars. ABC's other new comedies, James Caan's Back in the Game and Rebel Wilson's Super Fun Night are being slid into the network's popular Wednesday night sitcom block with the latter landing the desirable post-Modern Family timeslot. Suburgatory and new comedy Mixology are being held for midseason.

NBC Passes on 'Mulaney'
Steve DyerWHAT
WHY
LIFE IS MEANINGLESS
Following a flurry of sitcom cancellations, NBC has opted not to pick up the pilot for SNL writer/stand-up John Mulaney's new sitcom Mulaney. An ensemble multi-camera show staring Mulaney, Martin Short, Elliott Gould, SNL's Nasim Pedrad, and stand-ups Griffin Newman and Seaton Smith and executive produced by Lorne Michaels, Mulaney seems like a slam-dunk on paper. I attended the pilot taping, and it was super funny, so it comes as a huge disappointment that NBC opted not to pick up the show. The pilots they did pick up had better be good.

Working As a Chef on a Private Jet
Steve DyerWhat? BYE

FAA rules are that a cabin crew can’t be in the air longer than 12 hours. So if my boss scheduled a two-week trip to Indonesia, we’ll stop in Hawaii to refuel and switch crews. I’m dropped off in Hawaii for 10 days, the new crew goes on to Indonesia until they come back. My expenses are paid while I’m grounded.

Steve Dyer"At the end of March, almost 2.7 million people still subscribed to AOL service"
As Dan Frommer observes, “it doesn’t get more clear than this”:
At the end of March, almost 2.7 million people still subscribed to AOL service, the company reported this morning. That’s about where Netflix stood at the end of 2004. Since then, Netflix’s subscriber base has grown — 29 million at the end of March — and AOL’s has declined at a remarkably parallel rate. But that makes perfect sense: Nothing says “dialup” more than AOL, and few services have benefited more from the growth of broadband than Netflix. (The paths cross in early 2008, just as Netflix’s streaming video service was starting to take off.)
How to Make Great Gatsby Deviled Eggs
Deviled eggs were apparently big in 1922, so they might make a good addition to any Gatsby-themed parties you’re forced to attend or throw. (Searching for “popular in 1922″ also brought up this baby-name list, if you’re interested, Mildred.)
1. Rub a hard-boiled egg in a mixture of water and green food coloring.

2. Fill it with whatever deviled egg stuff you typically like. Here it’s just mayo and mustard.

3. Put both sides back on.

4. Place it somewhere just out of reach, like Daisy’s green light.

Amy Poehler and Her Brother Are Producing a TV Show in Sweden
Steve DyerCan someone translate this into words that I can understand please
Amy Poehler is getting into the international TV business. THR reports that Poehler and her brother Greg have sold an English-language show to the Swedish network TV4. Called Welcome to Sweden, the series will be produced via the Poehlers' newly-formed international production company Syskon (which is Swedish for "sibling"). Welcome to Sweden is a semi-autobiographical series based on Greg Poehler's life, and he'll be making his acting debut in the series as its lead character Bruce, a New York accountant who falls for a Swedish lady and moves with her to her home country. Swedish actors Josephine Bornebusch and Lena Olin will play the love interest and her mother, respectively, while US performers Illeana Douglas and Patrick Duffy are co-starring as Greg Poehler's parents. Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza, and, for some reason, Gene Simmons will be cameoing in the show.

Pre-Post Transition Post
Steve DyerYOU GUYS
Here's a picture of an airplane.
Anyway, I feel like this is becoming way more about planes than I had anticipated. Let's move on.
If, at any point over the last eighteen months, you've wondered what was happening to me and why it might be happening, my post tomorrow should explain everything.
I've been working on it for the better part of a year (partly because I wanted to get it exactly right, and partly because I was still experiencing it while attempting to explain it, which made things weird), and I'm relieved and excited and scared to finally be able to post it.
At this point, you're all probably wondering what is it? What's in the post?? Is it airplanes? And no, it unfortunately has very little to do with airplanes.* It's a sort of sequel to my post about depression. It is also about depression. In parts, it might get a little flinch-y and uncomfortable, and if I succeed in making you laugh during those parts, you're going to feel real weird about yourselves. But it's okay. Just let it happen. I WANT it to happen. Because it makes me feel powerful, and also because there are flinch-y, uncomfortable things everywhere. Seeing them is inevitable. If we can laugh about some of them, maybe they'll be less scary to look at.
Okay, so that's what's going to happen tomorrow. Hopefully this transition post makes the experience less jarring for everyone.
*As it turns out, there is a plane. I had forgotten about it (it's small and not the main focus of the post) and the coincidence was entirely unintentional. I'd never tell you there aren't going to be planes while being fully aware that there's a plane.

The TIME Cover is Upsetting, But the Video, Oh God the Video
Steve DyerThis is a tasty snack of a video
By now you have probably seen this week’s cover of TIME and run away screaming. Yes, they’re talking about millennials—the generation they define as being born between 1980 and 2000, which I personally think is way too broad considering that those born in the early ’80s have little or nothing in common with those born in the late ’90s.
The story, by Joel Stein, is behind a paywall, but I have taken a look at it and in case you were wondering, yes, it’s what you expect it to be. *Ring, ring* Hello? Joel’s not here right now, can I take a message? Tell him that 2008 called and want their headline back? Sure thing!
Oh, but this video. I just can’t with this video.

Steve DyerMilkshake drinking is a real thing nowadays.
The activist and filmmaker behind Gasland offers a primer on mineral rights, and how the natural gas industry can legally drill on your property against your will:
Back in February, Hallie Seegal explained the “compulsory pooling” that gas companies often use to access gas deposits in cases of split rights:
Compulsory pooling, also known as forced pooling, allows oil and gas companies to use private property without permission if a certain number of adjacent mineral rights owners lease their acreage out for gas production. Part of the new wave of the shale boom that has raised property owners’ fears involves horizontal drilling, which includes subterranean infrastructure that crosses dozens of property lines at a time. If just one property owner objects, the whole project could dismantle. Forced pooling prevents this situation from becoming an issue.
ProPublica has reported on the practice as well. Fox’s previous Ask Anything answers are here. Full AA archive here.
