Woman Formerly Known as Ladyzunga Cyborg Changes Name to Abcdefg Hijklmn Opqrst Uvwxyz
LrbeverWe should name a child LadyZunga Cyborg. :)
A Colombian woman recently changed her name to include all 26 letters in alphabetical order. So her first name is Abcdefg Hijklmn and her last name is Opqrst Uvwxyz. We’re not sure what she’s having people call her, but it’s probably something short, like Abc.
Before she turned to the alphabet, the 36-year-old Bogota resident used to go by ‘Ladyzunga Cyborg’, also a name that she fashioned for herself. In fact, the woman is known to have habitually changed her name several times in the past, but the alphabet name is probably her weirdest one yet.
Miss Abc revealed the reason behind her bizarre new name in a recent interview with a Colombian TV station. “I started looking for a name that nobody had in Colombia, or the world, so I thought ABCDEFG HIJKLMN OPQRST UVWXYZ,” she said. “I’ve changed my name so people wouldn’t know it’s me. It’s not because I was disturbed by it, but because I always wanted to bring an element of surprise.”

Scientific Facts in the Bible
LrbeverLOL
The video below, part of The Atheist Voice series, discusses the scientific facts in the Bible.

A rough transcript of the video can be found on the YouTube page in the “About” section. (Which I’m sure you’ll need in this case.)
We’d love to hear your thoughts on the project — more videos will be posted soon — and we’d also appreciate your suggestions as to which questions we ought to tackle next!

Naming Change
Lrbeverlol

When Canada introduced its 1-dollar coin in 1987, it became known as the “loonie” for the loon on its back.

When the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the 2-dollar coin in 1996, Canadians tried hard to find a comparable nickname. Though “toonie” or “twoonie” eventually won out, the list of failed suggestions included “doubloonie,” “doozie,” and the charming “moonie.”
Why moonie? Because the coin depicts the queen “with a bear behind.”

Nevada Legislator Thinks Cancer is a Fungus
That Idaho congressman who thinks that swallowed pills travel to the vagina may not be the dumbest state legislator this week. A state legislator in Nevada said on a radio show that she thinks cancer is a fungus and can be cured by saline and baking soda IVs.
Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore (R) wants to reform the rules of end-of-life medical care so that more cancer patients can simply flush out their disease using baking soda.
Fiore, who is also CEO of a healthcare company, told listeners to her weekly radio show on Saturday, that she will soon introduce a “terminally ill bill,” to allow more non-FDA-approved treatments for those diagnosed as having terminal illnesses.
As first reported by Jon Ralston, Fiore told listeners: “If you have cancer, which I believe is a fungus, and we can put a pic line into your body and we’re flushing, let’s say, salt water, sodium cardonate [sic], through that line, and flushing out the fungus… These are some procedures that are not FDA-approved in America that are very inexpensive, cost-effective.” The American Cancer Society warns that while cancer patients whose immune systems are weakened by high doses of chemotherapy can sometimes contract fungal infections, “there is no evidence that antifungal treatment causes the patients’ tumors to shrink.” Cancer Research UK dismisses the claim that sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can cure cancer as a debunked “persistent cancer myth.”

172. ISAAC ASIMOV: A lifetime of learning
Lrbeverawesome sauce!
Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) was a writer, known for his contribution to science fiction (including The Three Laws of Robotics, I, Robot and the Foundation series) and his staggering work in other genres and non-fiction.
Asimov had a formal education in chemistry, earning his PhD and working as a chemist for the Navy during WWII. He taught biochemistry and later became a professor at the Boston Univeristy of Medicine, all while writing stories for fantasy magazines in his spare time. He finally left the University in 1958 to focus on writing. Asimov’s output was truly mind-blowing, writing over 500 (!!!) books and 90,000 letters. He said: “Writing is my only interest. Even speaking is an interruption.”
Asimov’s non-fiction books were mostly on astronomy, but his other titles covered general science, history, mathematics, physics, Shakespeare, the Bible and mythology. He was completely self-taught in these areas and was successful for being able to take difficult scientific concepts and make them entertaining for the general public. He said he could “read a dozen dull books and make one interesting book out of them.” To get some idea of how vast Asimov’s knowledge was, his books appear in nine of the ten Dewey Decimal Classes.
The quotes used in this comic are taken from a fantastic interview Asimov did in 1988 (which you can watch on YouTube). In it, Asimov predicts how in the near-future, personal computers will help anyone learn anything ‘that strikes their fancy’ in the privacy of their own home and at their own leisure. Of course, that prediction came true with the internet, and even though the technology from The Matrix isn’t available yet, where we could upload information directly into our brain and shout “I know kung-fu!”, it has never been easier to learn whatever you want, no matter how niche. Thanks to reader Jenny for sending me the quote and the Brain Pickings article that featured the interview.
RELATED COMICS: Carl Sagan Pale Blue Dot. Richard Dawkins The Lucky Ones. Albert Einstein A Human Being is Part of the Whole. Jack London I Would Rather be Ashes Than Dust.
– I admit not having read any of Asimov’s books. Where should I start? The Foundation series? His story Nightfall was voted the best short science fiction story of all-time, so maybe that?
– Asimov said that one of only two men he knew who was smarter than himself was his good friend Carl Sagan.

This Mario Level Is So Hard, Even Its Creator Could Barely Beat It
Lrbeverholy crap

In the speedrun community, the Mario games are the considered the holy grail, with gamers going to increasingly ludicrous lengths to prove their mastery of the games' most obscure (and often unintended) mechanics. It's these same people who create and share custom hacked ROMs to challenge themselves and other players. In this video, we see PangaeaPanga play through a custom series of levels created for his own "Item Abuse" series. Even trying to play these levels requires intimate knowledge of Super Mario World's quirks and an emulator capable of letting players control Mario at a frame-by-frame level. The project was started in 2009 and he claims that this final chapter took so long because even he himself couldn't beat it until several tweaks were made.
The video here is 8 minutes long and I was glued to my screen the whole time. It's incredible.
(be sure to increase the video quality to witness the insanity in 60fps)
