Dog with Slice of Ham on Face Gets 1.3 Million Facebook Prayers (and Counting)

by Tracey Moody
Lrbever

poor ham dog

A dog with a slice of ham on his face has raised an impressive 1.3 million prayers on Facebook, a generously distributed and worthless form of imaginary currency.

The photo was posted to Facebook by Stephen Roseman a couple of days before Christmas. Roseman claimed the dog was badly burned and disfigured in a house fire while trying to save his family — clearly a hoax upon examination of the image. Poking fun at one of the most common forms of magical thinking on Facebook, Roseman requested, “One like = one prayer, One share = ten prayers.”

image

For the most part, people immediately recognized that the pork product was not scalded flesh. Around Day 3, though, Roseman started receiving what appeared to be genuine prayer messages — “God bless him” and “Hero!! Shared.”

By Day 4, people were furiously reporting the post, saying they had mistakenly shared it, and sending Roseman death threats.

Roseman posted a Facebook update yesterday saying:

I’ve literally lost count on how many death threats I’ve accumulated because of Ham Dog, I’m not concerned, but rather amused, regardless, I’m armed everywhere I go anyways. I find it motivating. If interested for the laughs, Private message me. I got plenty of proof.

Hopefully, those death threats are as empty as Facebook prayers.

As of today “Ham Dog” is up to over 70,000 likes and 123,000 shares. Which, by Divine Math, comes out to more than 1,300,000 requests for the dog to be healed.

image

To those who are concerned, the ham was successfully removed and the dog is expected to live a normal life.

The fan game projects just keep on coming! A new one is in the works called Ambient. Prologue. 55 Seasonal Fall Nail Art Designs

by Grechelle Magbanua

some of these are just gorgeous

fall nail-9

fall nail-9

A wonderful combination of matte royal blue and nude polish will fresh Fall flowers atop a matte white base.

The beauty of nail art design is that you can match it with whatever season there is at the present. You can find an array of nail art themes from winter, spring, summer and fall. Seasonal nail art is very easy to recreate and change again and again. It’s perfect for the ever changing moods of ladies who want to rock just about every theme they feel like painting.

For this season, we’re featuring the fall nail art design collection. The beauty about the fall season is that it’s the most laid back among all. Fall is the season where we start to feel the chilly winter with cold air and seeing the final phases of summer at the same time. It’s a rather homey yet calming atmosphere. Among the most popular indication that fall is starting is the falling of the leaves.

Creating Fall Nail Art Design with marble effect

If you want to start painting Fall nail art designs you might want to begin with the colorful Fall leaves.

    What you would need:
  • – A base polish
  • – A yellow nail polish
  • – A dark red nail polish
  • – A black nail polish
  • – Q tips or a dab of cotton attached to a thin stick
  • – Plastic sheets that have been crumpled
  • – Nail polish remover

The marble

Start by coating your nails with your base coat. Make sure that the base coat is completely dry before adding the other layers above it. When you are sure of the dryness, take the yellow polish and apply a double coat on top of the base coat. Do the same as the base polish and let the yellow polish dry.

When you are sure that the yellow polish is dry proceed to add a thin single coat of the red polish on top. If possible, do this with only a single swipe as to avoid thick and double coating. Let the red polish dry; this will take a lesser amount of time because of the single coat.

Take your crumpled plastic and gently pat it on top of the nails. You will begin to notice that parts of the nail polish come off as you take the plastic away. You should not worry since this is what makes it look like a marbled effect.

A word of caution though, you should control your force lest removing too much of the nail polish which will likely give you undesirable results. If you don’t like the idea of repeating the process from the top then you should always take a careful step. If you are a beginner t this type of style then it is okay to make a few first tries. Try the marbled effect first on a sample polish or you can ask your friends to be your assistants and try the effect on their nail polishes.

Use the Q tip or cotton swab to wipe away any excess polish on the side of the nails. This helps the nail polish look clean and professional.

If you make a simple mistake and would not want to redo everything, you can always apply the thin layer of red coat again and apply the crumpled plastic on it. Make sure you use a new type of plastic each time as not to destroy the color.

Just to be sure, proceed with creating the effect one nail at a time. You don’t want to rush the results especially when you don’t have much practice yet. If you have done everything right you will begin to see that the results are simply astounding.

The leaves

When you have mastered the art of marbling it’s time to paint on the leaves. You can use a yellow or black polish for this detail. The leaves would depend on your styles and creativity. For starters try painting single wide leaf on each of the nails. This will not only practice you on creating great details but it will also showcase the beauty of the leaves one by one.

If you like the silhouette effect then you can use the black polish to paint small falling leaves against the background. This style also gives out a dramatic effect. You don’t have to worry about running out of ideas since there are plenty of references that you can base from online. Try to check out nail blogs and tutorials for the latest fall nail art designs.

Barkley 2 teaser trailer is real and hilarious, showing off at PAX

by Ron Duwell
Lrbever

lol

Barkley 2 is one of those old Kickstarter games that dwindled out of public scrutiny after months of silence. It pulled in $120,335 back in 2012 with a promised release date of Dec. 2013, but seeing as we are way past that at this point, anything is a welcome sight now. And that’s just what we have.

A new live-action teaser trailer, very clearly spoofing the Final Fantasy VII Remake teaser and the AAA gaming scene’s reluctance to show actual gameplay, has bounced it back into prominent view with promises of the game finally being showed off at PAX this week. “Barkley” narrates, indicating that “At last, the promise has been made…”

For those who don’t know, Barkley 2 is the sequel to the beloved free RPG Barkley, Shut up and Jam Gaiden from 2008  This first game takes place in 2041 and stars Charles Barkley, an NBA superstar who destroyed a basketball stadium after performing a Chaos Dunk, killing all in attendance. As a result of his actions, many basketball players were rounded up and killed, and the game was made illegal. Twelve years later, another Chaos Dunk destroys Manhattan and Barkley is blamed by the sellout Michael Jordon and his B-Ball Removal Department. Avoiding arrest and execution by an oppressive government, Barkley and his party must uncover the secrets behind this latest Chaos Dunk.

It’s really that awesome. See the trailer below.

If we are going with official titles here, Barkley 2 is actually called The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. Naturally, Tales of Game’s Studio was unable to score the likenesses of actual NBA players for a game created with the intent of being profitable, so many of the references towards the NBA have been scrapped. Our hero is now named X114JAM9, a cybernetic youngster who awakens from a basketball induced coma in the year 666X. He sets out on a quest in search of Cyberdwarf, the previous game’s only returning character and “the only one who can reveal to him the terrible truth behind his forgotten past and make sense of his harrowing future.”

Barkley 2 is a coming of age story, a story about love, hope, betrayal and redemption. It is a story about identity and sacrifice, a story about wayward jocks struggling for a purpose. It is a story about the trials of our dystopian future and most importantly…

…it is a story about You.

Yes, please. You should be caught up to speed before playing this sequel, so the first game is available for free from the game’s official website. Hopefully, we’ll finally be getting some gameplay from PAX.

186. My spirit is a roaring sea

by Gav
Lrbever

bad ass

186_spirit01

When I was away on my book tour recently, I took part in the Inktober challenge, where I had to post a new drawing on Instagram every day of October. I only drew my own characters hoping that it would trigger some new ideas for comics which thankfully, it did. I loved drawing the Red Demon again and also the Little Kung-Fu warrior that first appeared in my Desiderata adaptation, and I thought it be cool to draw them in the same comic. That’s where the idea for this story originated.

I’ve mentioned in the past that most of the time when creating these comics, I start with the quote or poem and then figure out a story to match it. But sometimes I think of the story first and look for a quote second. For this comic, I had the story ready to go and spent days trying to find a quote or poem to go with it. I couldn’t find anything. Nothing. Nada. Zip. So I reluctantly decided to write a poem myself. I’ve written some comics before like The Calling, and I also wrote an original poem for my new book (you’ll have to buy the book to read that one). Anyway, writing is not my strength, but I had fun with this poem. Thanks for indulging me.

BUY THE POSTER

RELATED COMICS
– The Little Warrior first appeared in my adaptation of Desiderata.
– The Demon first appeared in these two comics: Always be Prepared and Sympathy for the Devil.
– More epic poetry comics: The Calling. Phenomenal Woman. Invictus. Ithaka. Ozymandias.

UPDATE: A few readers requested I post just the text. So here it is. Thanks so much for the kind words about the poem!!

MY SPIRIT IS A ROARING SEA

I’m born to ride the crashing wave
To conquer each challenge anew
Ready to fight, forever brave
Ready to face a foe like you

Out from the shadows you appear
And steal me from my sheltered home
The day has come, the day we fear
Now I must face you on my own

You have me now, you didn’t ask
Lust and greed your only reason
But all that strength is just a mask
Stripped away, I see you demon

Your stench, your breath, your icy touch
Are not enough to close my eyes
And through the pain I know this much
I’ll never be your helpless prize

So we begin our violent dance
You have the rage, but no control
Don’t you realise there is no chance
Against the thunder of my soul?

Beyond the darkness into light
Is a warrior breaking free
Did you think that I would not fight?
I had no doubt, I count on me

Beyond my pain beyond my fear
For no one will I bend a knee
My heart is fire, my mind is clear
My spirit is a roaring sea

183. CHUCK JONES: An animator’s advice

by Gav
Lrbever

Something awesome! :)

183_chuck01

Chuck Jones (1912-2002) was an animation director responsible for some of the best films – animated or otherwise – ever made. He directed many classic Looney Tunes cartoons, where he helped shape the personalities of established characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig, and created many of his own characters including The Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, Pepé Le Pew and Marvin the Martian.

Jones is one of my biggest influences and some of my happiest childhood memories revolve around his cartoons. Everyday after primary school, my brother, some cousins and I would walk to my grandparents home where we were looked after until our parents finished work. We would all watch Looney Tunes cartoons together and I remember my Grandma would laugh as much as the rest of us. She loved Bugs the most, especially when he dressed up as a woman and seduced Elmer or some other poor fool. My Grandma played a big role in my childhood and my happiest moments with her was when we watched cartoons together. She passed away when I was 15, and whenever I think of her, I think of Looney Tunes.

Even back then, I would have been 10 or 11, I was starting to pay attention to the animators and artists who were making these hilarious cartoons. I could predict who the director of the cartoon would be before their names appeared, and my brother or cousins never figured out how I was doing it. I would shout out ‘FRIZ FRELENG!” or “ROBERT McKIMSON!”. But I got most excited when I could shout “CHARLES M. JONES!” (I knew because I had memorised which animators worked with particular directors and Jones always used Ken Harris and Lloyd Vaughan). Jones’s cartoons were always my favourite – his poses were more dynamic, his character’s facial expressions more perfect, his cartoons just funnier to me.

This quote is taken from a video interview Jones did with The Archive of American Television and it’s certainly something I still need to remind myself. I often go down the Instagram rabbit hole of finding one great artist after another, constantly in awe of their work and comparing my stuff to theirs and coming to the obvious conclusion: “My work is total crap!” and “Why do I even bother?” But of course, that achieves nothing. I can only do the best that I can. Be the fastest pig I can be.

In the clip, Jones also recites a great quote that his art instructor would begin classes with, which reminds me of the Ira Glass quote I adapted awhile back: “All of you have one hundred thousand bad drawings in you. The sooner you get rid of them, the better it will be for everyone.” In his memoir, Chuck Amuck, Jones followed up the quote with: “This was not a discouraging statement to me, because I was already well into my third hundred thousand.”

Jones was a terrible student growing up. Seeing that his son showed a talent for art, Jones’s father pulled him out of school and enrolled him in the Chouinard Art Institute, which later became CalArts (it’s a total coincidence that in the first appearance of Ballet Boy, he was terrible at school and his father took him out to join the dance academy). Jones was not training to be an animator, and he “came out of art school during the Depression, dreaming the dreams that all worthy art students dream: that I would become an easel painter, consumptive and unrecognised, dying picturesquely at some incredible old age like thirty-seven”. That was initially proving to be true, with Jones forced to work as a janitor to earn money. Desperate for any art-related job, he found work at the Ub Iwerks animation studio – starting at the very bottom, working as a cell washer, before moving on to painter, in-betweener and then joining the Leon Schlesinger studio (which made the Looney Tunes cartoons) as an assistant animator in 1933. There he worked under legendary directors Tex Avery and Bob Clampett. He was promoted to animator and finally became a director in 1938. Jones’s early cartoons were very Disney-like, extremely soft and cute and it took him awhile to find his voice. He developed his irreverent sensibility and more angular style over the years with his best cartoons being made in the late 1940s and 1950s. After the Looney Tunes glory days, Jones worked on Tom and Jerry for MGM and made other notable cartoons including The Dot and The Line and Dr Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Jones received three Oscars for individual cartoons and was also awarded a Honorary Academy Award in 1996. You can see Robin Williams presenting him with the award in this clip.

It’s hard to single out a few, but some of my personal favourite Chuck Jones cartoons include Long-Haired Hare, with Bugs battling a opera singer dressed as the famous composer Leopold. Rabbit of Seville for the laugh-out-loud Bugs and Elmer haircut scene. Feed the Kitty for the hilarious bulldog Marc Antony and the greatest facial expressions ever drawn in a cartoon (which I poorly tried to ape in my comic). The meta Duck Amuck with the cruel animator Bugs messing with poor Daffy. And of course, my favourite and what many consider to be Jones’s masterpiece: One Froggy Evening, the ultimate parable about greed told through the story of a singing frog that will only sing for one man and no one else. Steven Spielberg called it “The Citizen Kane of the animated short”. Watch these scenes and try not to laugh, I dare you! Of course, it should be noted that Jones made these cartoons in collaboration with an incredible team of animators, musicians, voice artists, plus long-time writing partner Michael Maltese and legendary background artist Maurice Noble.

You have to remind yourself that these cartoons are 60 years old. And they still hold up! I guarantee you that if you show a kid a classic Chuck Jones cartoon, then show them a cartoon from 2015, they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. They would probably laugh MORE at the 1950s cartoon. I mean think about it, what other piece of entertainment could you say that about? I said this about Calvin and Hobbes and I’ll say it again for the work of Chuck Jones: great art is timeless. Just like my grandma used to laugh at these cartoons with me, I look forward to one day watching them with my grandchildren and laughing along too.

RELATED COMIC: The ballet boy first appeared in this comic, featuring a quote from Ken Robinson. I really like drawing this kid, so expect to see him again in the future.

THE ‘ADVICE’ SERIES:
