Police say suspects had means to pull off a mass shooting at Pokémon championships
A picture of assault weapons laying on the trunk of a car, shared on Facebook with an oblique message about going to the Pokémon World Championships in Boston, was enough for police to detain and ultimately arrest two men on firearms charges there.
"What we can read is what they were saying and the actions that they took, bringing the weapons they were showing online as a threat," Boston police superintendent Paul A. Fitzgerald told reporters yesterday.
James Stumbo (left), 27 and Kevin Norton (right), 18, both of Iowa, were detained on Thursday after security for the Pokémon championships noticed the threatening Facebook post and reported it to local law enforcement. Police had to wait for a judge to approve a...
Japanese-Inspired Shoes That Wrap Around Your Feet
Store bought shoes rarely fit perfectly, and bespoke options are too expensive for many. Italian shoe maker Vibram, more commonly known for its military footwear, has come up with a solution to this problem with its Furoshiki Shoes.
Furoshiki (風呂敷) are a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth used for transporting goods and were first used in the Edo period to carry clothing while at the public baths. Furoshiki shoes, created by Japanese designer Masaya Hashimoto, have no laces and instead wrap around the foot–hence the name–fastening with velcro.
Vibram calls it the first ever “wrapping sole.” These novel shoes can be bought from the Japanese Vibram store for about $140 USD, and come in at least five colors.

Vivid Hummingbird Close-ups Reveal Their Incredible Beauty
When it comes to birds, the terms “strong” or “beautiful” might inspire images of fierce eagles or decadent tropical parrots. But both of these birds will certainly find strong contender in hummingbirds, which possess a unique sort of delicate beauty and a mastery of avian maneuvers like no other. We created this list of 20 stunning hummingbird photos to show you just how beautiful they can be.
Capturing a photo of a hummingbird in flight with clearly focused wings can be very difficult, as some varieties are capable of beating their wings up to 52 times a second. This gives them the ability to hover and fly backwards – something that few other birds can do and that none have mastered the way the hummingbird has. via Boredpanda

Banksy’s Dismaland: Take A First Look Inside Nightmare Version Of Disneyland
Bridgetthere is a fucking hummingbird at dismaland
If “Dismaland” sounds like a nightmare version of Disneyland to you, then you’d be right. The “bemusement” park is the work of notorious street artist Banksy, and the 2.5 acre site opens today in the UK. The secret project, which was unveiled Thursday and is located in the abandoned Tropicana swimming resort in Weston-super-Mare, features theme-park attractions with a dark twist, along with work by Banksy and 50 other artists from around the world. “Dismaland” admission costs £3 and will run only for 5 weeks. The official brochure describes it in the following manner:
“Are you looking for an alternative to the soulless sugar-coated banality of the average family day out? Or just somewhere cheaper. Then this is the place for you—a chaotic new world where you can escape from mindless escapism. Instead of a burger stall, we have a museum. In place of a gift shop we have a library, well, we have a gift shop as well…This event contains adult themes, distressing imagery, extended use of strobe lighting, smoke effects and swearing. The following items are strictly prohibited: knives, spraycans, illegal drugs, and lawyers from the Walt Disney corporation.”

Not Even Running Through the Woods Will Save You From the Robots
If you had to escape a robot that could easily outrun you in an open field, what would you do? Given the technology of today, heading to rougher terrain would be a good decision. But robotics company Boston Dynamics is making sure that soon, robots will be able to go anywhere you can go. ANYWHERE.
Above, the founder of Boston Dynamics Marc Raibert speaks at the FAB 11 Conference at MIT, showing off brand new footage of the company’s ATLAS robot traversing wooded areas disturbingly well.
The key, as Raibert says, is to model the walking robots after how animals and people move, “where you move quickly in order to keep yourself stabilized if you’re disturbed.” The GIF above shows just how effective that dynamic stabilization can be, as does the testing that involves simply hurling heavy objects at a balancing robot.
“We’re interested in getting this robot out into the world,” says Raibert. That’s the real challenge — labs are so controlled that the intricacies of the outside environment are hard to model for. So how do you model it? Send the robot outside. Once it can walk the earth with ease, the next step would be removing the need for outside power. “We’re working on a version that doesn’t have [the power tether].” Oh. Well there you go.
All the faux fear mongering aside, the technology on display here is tremendously impressive. You and I take for granted the musculature in our legs and body that allows us to sprint through the forest — Boston Dynamics has to replicate this evolutionarily-tuned ingenuity from the ground-up (though details about the specific designs are kept close to the chest). And it looks like they are doing a pretty good job of it.
Oh, and we’re going to just act like we didn’t see the four-legged robot with the door-opener for a face for now.
