In 2003, Donald Rumsfeld gave a perfect explanation for why people riot

by German Lopez

When Iraqis looted hospitals and businesses in Baghdad after the US invasion in 2003, the conservative secretary of defense at the time, Donald Rumsfeld, suggested that looting was a result of legitimate, pent-up anger — a comment that closely mirrors how many protesters feel about the rioting that erupted in Baltimore this week after Freddie Gray's funeral.

Rumsfeld said, according to Pentagon correspondent Pamela Hess at UPI:

While no one condones looting, on the other hand, one can understand the pent-up feelings that may result from decades of repression and people who have had members of their family killed by that regime, for them to be taking their feelings out on that regime. And I don't think there's anyone in any of those pictures … [who wouldn't] accept it as part of the price of getting from a repressed regime to freedom.

Rumsfeld's explanation for rioting is spot-on, according to historians and experts who have studied urban upheavals.

"People participate in this type of event for a real reason," Darnell Hunt, a UCLA professor who's studied the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles, said. "It's not just people taking advantage. It's not just anger and frustration at the immediate or proximate cause. It's always some underlying issues."

In Iraq, people were furious not just at the former regime that tyrannically oppressed them for decades, but with US invaders who were now occupying their country.

In the case of Baltimore, the tense protests and riots over the past week were catalyzed by the death of Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died of a spinal cord injury shortly after allegedly brutal treatment while in police custody. But the roots of the protests and riots are people's desperation and anger with a local police department that has a history of brutality — particularly against black residents — and huge socioeconomic disparities, which cause different Baltimore neighborhoods' average life expectancy to vary by decades. It's not just Gray's death or people taking advantage of the situation to loot — it's a genuine display of rage at a system that protesters feel has in many ways failed them despite decades of complaints.

In response to the Baltimore riots, local and state officials imposed a weeklong 10 pm curfew and called in Maryland's National Guard.

A Leaked Police Document Says Freddie Gray Might Have Been 'Trying to Injure Himself'

by Allie Conti

[body_image width='640' height='404' path='images/content-images/2015/04/30/' crop='images/content-images-crops/2015/04/30/' filename='a-leaked-police-document-says-freddie-gray-might-have-been-trying-to-injure-himself-430-body-image-1430409749.jpg' id='51661']

Moments before Freddie Gray was carted away by Baltimore police on April 12, he was screaming. When he arrived at the station, he was unconscious with a severed spinal cord. His father, after visiting Gray at the ICU, said it looked like his son had been beaten. We still don't know what occurred inside the van, but allegations that he had been subject to a so-called "rough ride"—where cops deliberately inflict damage on detainees—sparked a riot in Baltimore on Monday as well as protests across the country.

At the time of the demonstrations, all the public knew was that Gray was not wearing a seatbelt in the van and that the police admitted to not giving him proper medical care. But on Wednesday evening, the Washington Post published a sealed police document containing testimony from another prisoner inside the van at the time. Although the unnamed man couldn't see Gray during the ride because they were separated by a metal partition, he apparently told police the 25-year-old was "banging against the walls" and that it seemed like he "was trying to injure himself."

The document seems to contradict what appears in the video of Gray's arrest, in which a man admonishes the cops: "After they Tased you like that, you wonder why he can't use his legs." It also goes against what journalists have been hearing from their sources—that Gray was unresponsive before he was loaded into the van. More specifically, Jayne Miller, a reporter for WBAL-TV, tweeted that Baltimore Police Commissioner Anthony Batts told her on April 23 the second prisoner said Gray was "mostly quiet."

"We disagree with any implication that Freddie Gray severed his own spinal cord," Jason Downs, the Gray family attorney, told the Post. "We question the accuracy of the police reports we've seen thus far, including the police report that says Mr. Gray was arrested without force or incident."

On Thursday morning, the Baltimore Police Department held a press conference at which it was announced that the investigation into Gray's death is now being handled by the state's attorney. It was also disclosed that the van carrying Gray made a previously unreported stop.

So far, six officers have been suspended for their roles in the incident. The results of the inquiry will determine whether they will be indicted for Gray's death, but just because the probe is wrapping up doesn't mean we'll find out the results any time soon.

"Whatever time the state's attorney needs to make that determination, the family wants to get it right," Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake said Wednesday.

FINAL FANTASY X’s Moonflow in Real-Life is a Bloom of Moon Jellies

by Kyle Hill

Final Fantasy X is a game so focused on and filled with death that the moments when Tidus, Yuna, and the rest of the guardians do get to witness the life and beauty of Spira really stand out. One of those moments, punctuated with Square Enix’s famous cut-scenes, is when the party first reaches “the Moonflow,” a continent-dissecting river whose banks shimmer with the glow of luminous “pyreflies.”

Back in the real-world, we get a moonflow whenever moon jellies (yep, scientists changed “jellyfish” to “jellies”) gather.

RealMoonflow_3

These photos, taken by Washington resident Morgan Bubel, show a so-called “bloom” of moon jellies. Jelly blooms are massive influxes of the creatures, like a swarm, that are dependent on factors such as water temperature and available resources (like oxygen in the water).

RealMoonflow_2

Bubel sent in these photos to Jellywatch, a website set up by JEDI –Jellyfish Database Initiative — to track jelly blooms with the help of public submissions. It’s not just jelly-spotting; as climate change ramps up, oceans warm and marine environments shift, jelly blooms are starting to cause serious problems.

RealMoonflow_1

This moonflow off the coast of Washington is harmless for now, but jelly blooms need constant monitoring. I mean, we thought Tidus’ laugh would be harmless and look what happened.

This Shape-Shifting Caterpillar Hates Being Yelled At

by Sarah Keartes

A caterpillar in the Amazon has just created the perfect defense against the ‘stop and chat’: any noise causes it to fire four spiraling tentacles on its abdomen – the cranky bug version of “leave me alone.”

“I had just climbed to the top of a canopy tower overlooking the rainforest when I called to my group below me, when suddenly a flash of movement at eye-level caught my attention,” recalls entomologist Aaron Pomerantz, who happened upon the creature while traversing the jungles of Peru. Given the larva’s strange aversion to conversation, Pomerantz took the only logical next step and yelled at it again. For an hour. Because science.

“Screaming at caterpillars doesn’t fall into most people’s job descriptions,” he says. “But this reaction to noise was so peculiar that once my group joined me, we took turns yelling at it and filmed its contorting reactions…all to bring the story of this bizarre organism to you!”

A bit of digging revealed the caterpillar belongs to the Nematocampa genus of moths, which use hemolymph – the insect equivalent to blood but grosser– to enlarge the long appendages until they become erect (sound familiar?).

The strange defense has been observed before, but there are a lot hypotheses about its origin. It’s possible that the filaments help the larva blend in, mimicking the way a flower’s stamens would blow in the wind. “It could also be that the tentacles extend when the caterpillar is alarmed so that an attacking predator (such as a bird) has a higher probability of snagging a tentacle, as opposed to the main body (similar to how some lizards are able to lose their tails),” explains Pomerantz. Further still, the tips of the tentacles are covered with tiny hairs, called setae, which could act as highly sensitive vibration detectors, allowing the caterpillar to hear incoming threats before they come into view.

caterpillar

It’s a bit of a mystery, but one thing’s for sure, we’ve never wanted to yell at a caterpillar so badly.

Can This Face-Detection Software Accurately Guess How Old You Are?

by cooper@policymic.com (Cooper Fleishman)
Bridget

one pic was spot on, one guessed me as 10 years younger

Hey, bored office drones! Want to play a fun game on the Internet that also sends Microsoft your face? You're in luck: Enter how-old.net, a nifty piece of facial-recognition software that tries to guess your age. How-Old exploded in popularity on Twitter on Thursday, forcing hundreds of 25-year-olds to confront their worst fear — that they look 40. Or worse, 15.

Upload a photo and Microsoft employs its "state-of-the-art cloud-based face algorithms" to give you a result like this:

That's me on the left; I'm actually 27. Gabe and Miles are, I'll just say, much younger than the age Microsoft assigned them.

But it's not the accuracy of How-Old that's appealing. The most sharable results are, of course, wildly off.

It's a silly tool, and we're all a bunch of narcissists. Read More

Bumblebees Use Nicotine To Self-Medicate

by Josh L Davis
Plants and Animals

So far, the majority of evidence for animals self-medicating—either by ingesting or applying substances with medicinal properties to treat or prevent disease—has been documented in vertebrates, and more specifically chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes). But there is a growing body of evidence that a wider and wider range of animals seek out plants and other substances specifically for their healing properties.

Hawkeye might be the worst Avenger, but he's great at Mario Kart and Tinder

by Megan Farokhmanesh

Poor Hawkeye. He doesn't have the glitz and glam of his fellow Avengers (it's hard to top a billionaire, demi-god or a green rage monster), but he's just as cool of a superhero, right guys?

...Guys?

In a recent segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Hawkeye actor Jeremy Renner sings a sad, soulful parody of Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud" centered around the oft ignored Avenger. Sure, he's not Captain America, but you can watch him sing about his lesser-known powers, like kicking ass at Mario Kart or collecting scarves, in the video above. Renner might not be great at apologies, but gosh, the man can sing.

The Avengers hype train is finally drawing to a close, as Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters May 1.

Dead Island 2 pushed back to 2016

by Samit Sarkar

Dead Island 2 publisher Deep Silver has delayed the open-world zombie-slaying game to 2016, the company announced today on the franchise's Twitter account.

"We have always set ourselves a big goal for Dead Island 2: to create the sequel that takes Dead Island to the next level," said Deep Silver in a Twitlonger post. "We have been looking at the game long and hard, and we have decided we didn't reach that goal we set out to achieve quite yet. This is why we have decided to delay Dead Island 2 to 2016."

Deep Silver announced Dead Island 2 during Sony's E3 2014 press briefing, and said at the time that it planned to release the game in spring 2015. Last month, Deep Silver delayed another one of its big 2015 games, Homefront: The...

Real-time face tracking + Projection Mapping = Face...

Real-time face tracking + Projection Mapping = Face Hacking

Japanese producer and projection mapping specialist Nobumichi Asai colaborated with make-up artist Hiroto Kuwahara along with French digital image engineer Paul Lacroix to create this awesome video art installation entitled Omote. The title refers to the mask used in the traditional Japanese musical drama of Noh. Using real-time face tracking and projection mapping the team created a virtual mask on the face of a live mode..

image

The woman wears no makeup. Instead her face is covered in tiny sensors for 3D laser scanning of her features and the projection of a perfectly accurate three-dimensional facial replica making her appear as though her eyes are open when they’re really closed and that she’s wearing makeup:

Hypnotizing Mandala Cakes Made Of Raw Vegan Ingredients

by Dainius

Stephen McCarty, a vegan-raw chef from LA, makes elaborately beautiful cakes using only raw, vegan ingredients. For McCarty, who creates under the name Sukhavati Raw Desserts (Sukhavati means “Happy” in Hindi), his Mandala cakes are just another example of life’s impermanence. You need to enjoy what you can, while you can.

Mandalas are spiritual and ritual symbols in Hinduism and Buddhism, where they represent the universe. Sand Mandalas, popular in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, can take several weeks to build and only moments to sweep away. In a way, McCarty’s mandala cakes also follow this creative-destructive ritual.
