by Gergo Vas

Player Pascal Maynard found a relatively rare card during one of the biggest Magic tournaments of the year. And while it didn’t fit his deck strategy, he kept the card and put it up on eBay. Because of this and because thousands saw it live, the card sold for a crazy amount of money.

Microbes On 8-Year-Old Boy’s Handprint After Playing Outside

by Dovas
Bridget

i'm going to set fire to my hands now

Tasha Sturm, a lab technician at Cabrillo College in California, has created an extraordinary set of images that illustrate the diverse world of microbes that lives on our skin. This colorful petri dish is full of bacteria, yeast and fungi that were found on her 8-year-old son’s hand after he finished playing outside.

Sturm explained the process on Microbe World, where she posted the images. She used tryptic soy agar, which forms a nutritious jelly perfect for growing microbial cultures. After her son pressed his hand gently into the gel, she incubated it and let the bacteria flourish for a few days. Though the resulting petri dish should be treated as a biohazard, it should also be noted that having bacteria on your hands and skin is normal. Exposure to safe amounts and types of bacteria ensures a healthy ‘microbiome,’ immune system and digestive tract.

The varying visible structures of these bacterial colonies reflect their microscopic characteristics. Microbes with and without protective membranes or flagella (which allow them to swim) will all create colonies of different colors, shapes, textures and sizes.

Anonymous Just Launched a Campaign Against the McKinney Police Department

by natasha@mic.com (Natasha Noman)
Bridget

HAHAHAHAHA -I- took that picture, wtf.

The global Internet hacking collective Anonymous launched an online campaign Monday against the McKinney Police Department in Texas after video emerged of police officers physically and verbally abusing a group of black teenagers at a pool party.

"Everyone who was getting put on the ground was black, Mexican, Arabic," Brandon Brooks, the 15-year-old white boy who filmed the event, told BuzzFeed News. "[The officer] didn't even look at me. It was kind of like I was invisible."

Following the MPD's heavy handed response, Anonymous, officially launched an @OPMcKinney Twitter account where it has been attacking the department with threats and calling for justice.

"We want accountability," an Anonymous member wrote to Mic. Read More

Don't Tell Me I Can't Get A Fucking Neck Tattoo

by Jane Marie on Millihelen, shared by Kate Dries to Jezebel
Bridget

i love this article because the majority of the posts are calling the author a basic bitch. -i'd- call the author a basic bitch and i have flash art tattooed on me. i also love that most of the comments on the artist's IG are positive when she clearly posted his work to shame him.

A few weeks ago, I was refused a tattoo. At a tattoo parlor. By a tattoo artist. At 1 p.m. on a Sunday, prior to consuming any Bloody Marys. I’m approaching 40, self-employed, and am generally used to doing whatever I want with my own body. (That last one was a joke.) This is my story.

Scientists built bipedal robots so advanced you'll feel bad for them when they fall down

by Timothy B. Lee

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the government agency that brought you the internet, held a major robotics competition on Friday and Saturday. The magazine IEEE Spectrum compiled a funny video of the humanoid robots losing their balance and falling over.

Don't be fooled into thinking the competition as a whole was a failure. Several robots were able to complete a variety of tasks: driving a vehicle, climbing up stairs, walking on rubble, operating a power tool, and so forth. They did it slowly and with some mishaps, but this still represents dramatic progress.

DARPA hopes this kind of robot can be deployed the next time there's a situation like the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster where human first responders would be in serious danger. There are also undoubtedly military applications, which DARPA — an agency of the military — will be happy to exploit.

And as Alex Tabarrok points out, this is a strategy DARPA has pursued before. In 2004, the agency held its first competition for self-driving cars. Every single vehicle failed at the task of driving 150 miles through relatively flat desert terrain. Yet by 2007, self-driving cars could not only drive across the desert, they could navigate urban streets and obey traffic laws, too.

So while humanoid robots are error-prone today, they might not be for long.

Spotify’s Founder Just Said What Everyone Is Thinking About Apple Music

by kbeaudoin@policymic.com (Kate Beaudoin)

Two long hours into Apple's 26th annual Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday afternoon, Tim Cook announced that he had "one last thing." "Today we're announcing Apple Music, the next chapter of music," the Apple CEO told the audience. "It will change the way that you experience music forever."

That's a bit of an overstatement. Fittingly, Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek summed up a suitable response when he Tweeted (then quickly deleted):

Source: Billboard/TwitterThe announcement: Apple Music, which rolls out on June 30, will offer a streaming service culled from the music in the iTunes catalogue. Like Spotify, the service is $9.99 a month with a $14.99 a month family plan, but unlike Spotify, Apple will not offer a free tier. Read More

my dad told us this if someone shoots up our school

SUPER IMPORTANT

BEST TIP

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS

not even a joke we learned this in Police Explorers and put it on your clothing as well but go quickly because you don’t know where the person is.

This is what school children in America are taught.
That is so wrong on so many fucking levels and there are still people who believe gun control in any form is a bad thing.

let me reiterate
SCHOOL CHILDREN IN A SUPPOSEDLY FIRST WORLD COUNTRY ARE TAUGHT THE SAME THINGS AS PEOPLE IN ACTIVE WAR ZONES BECAUSE THE THREAT OF BEING KILLED IN A SHOOTING IS SO HIGH.

the bit in caps here is making me rethink my stance on gun control

shit

I’m reblogging this because as my follower count goes up, the odds of this saving a life do too.

My elementary school had drills telling us what to do in such an emergency. This is exactly what they told us. AND NOW FOR A FACT: IN CALIFORNIA YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REGISTER A SHOTGUN!

Welcome to America. Good luck.
