The Toast Is Hiring

by Mallory Ortberg

toast selfThe Toast is growing. Would you like to grow with us? We’re looking for someone to join us part-time in a mostly assistant editor capacity, with the burgeoning hope and fond longing that this could become an EXCITING FULL-TIME OPPORTUNITY within a year.

Some things we are looking for:

- Someone who would enjoy the idea of becoming a part of The Toast

- Someone with some experience writing/editing/Wordpressing. You do not have to have years and years of experience. Also, I dunno, maybe a really great physicist will feel like abandoning their challenging and lucrative field for hanging out with us, and I’ll be so blown away that I totally change my mind, so like, just apply if you’re a generally capable and competent person who can express themselves in writing.

- I’m probably forgetting something

Some things we will ask of you:

- About 12-15 hours of work a week, at first. Like…9-noonish on weekdays? Does that add up to roughly 15 hours? Yeah, it does. We can revisit this as our coffers swell with doubloons and the ship’s hold groans with the weight of our labor, but let’s start with that.

- Managing the master freelance schedule

- Creating and managing author accounts in WordPress

- Copyediting and comment moderation

- Light blogging, if you so desire

- That’s all I can think of right now

Some things we can offer you:

- A FLEXIBLE HOURLY RATE

- The complete and permanent absence of a male boss

- The promise of EXCELSIOR

Miscellany:

You do not have to live in New York. No one ever has to live in New York.

Applicants who are queer and/or trans and/or of color and/or awesome are particularly encouraged to apply.

Interested parties would do well to send a CV and a friendly note to mallory@the-toast.net. I will be looking at applications until August 15th (you guys are sending in a lot of applications! Good for you, but I’m going to close the window a bit earlier so I don’t have to write 500 emails) so scrape up some credentials and fling them at me.

I pledge to you now that I won’t do that thing where someone says “Thanks, we’ll be in touch” and then they’re never in touch and they hire someone else. I mean, obviously I will only hire one person, I can’t hire all of you, but I will tell you in a reasonable time frame so that you can move on with your life. That was something that I hated when I was looking for work and now that I have MILD HIRING POWER I hope to do my part to break the cycle.

Jaden Smith is turning fifteen in July, and he may be getting...

Jaden Smith is turning fifteen in July, and he may be getting the one present I’ve been lobbying for for years: legal emancipation.

“He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated.’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh.”

Look, I’d want Jaden Smith out of my house, too, but let’s be honest. Samuel Affleck, age 1, would be a more responsible emancipated minor than Jaden Smith. The Smith kids loose in society is honestly my worst nightmare, and I thought I had three more years before that became a reality.

It’s pretty clear, though, that Will Smith operates outside of reality. In that same interview, he calls himself “the biggest movie star in the world.” Okay, then. If you say so.

Kate Brings Back Polka Dots for Wedding, A New Shoe Brand & An Older ID (2002!)

by admin

William and Kate attended a wedding today in the idyllic setting of Ewelme, in Oxfordshire. Their good friends, William van Cutsem and Rosie Ruck Keene were married, Royal photographer Mark Stewart reports that William was an usher, so Kate came to the wedding with friends.

With thanks to the generosity of Tilly Pudwell for graciously sharing her photo, you can see Kate repeated the Topshop dress first worn last month.

Kate had on much the same ensemble today as what she wore to the Warner Brothers Studio event April 26, seen below.

This is the dress prompting debate as to whether it was Topshop’s Polka Dot Skater Dress (now sold out with the exception of isolated petite sizes)…

Topshop (no longer available)

… or the brand’s Florence maternity dress, also sold out.

After loads of input via comments on the original post, Facebook comments and email, it looks like Kate is wearing the Florence. While I am a seamstress, I’ve not worn maternity apparel and it it makes sense to listen to those with more experience on the topic.

The only other polka dot Topshop dress I found in any range of sizes is a piece that is much longer, the Penny Spot Midi Dress (on sale for $50). There is a polka dot maternity piece available, the Maternity Spot Shirt ($76), it also comes in Standard sizing.

As mentioned, Kate paired the dress with her Ralph Lauren jacket from several years ago.

She also carried her black clutch and Episode ‘Angel’ pumps.

The Duchess did wear a smart new fascinator, we don’t know the maker yet, and will update if we do learn more about the piece.

UPDATED: The kind folks at Vivien Sheriff messaged me Tuesday to let me know Kate was wearing a piece they created.

Our next item involves Kate wearing a different brand of shoes. There have been multiple posts on Twitter this past week by people who say they have seen Kate out and about in Anglesey. One such tweet was posted Friday by Matt Steele, he even noted the brand of footwear Kate was wearing.

The brand originated in Spain, the shoes are made in factory near the small town of Arnedo.

Initially I was taken aback someone could note a shoe label so easily, until the savvy WKW Facebook crew pointed out that it can be easy to spot Flossys, they have a distinctive tag at the heel.

Kate might like the pair shown above, they are done in broderie anglaise, or eyelet, a favorite fabric for her.  Some say Flossys are akin to the US-based brand TOMS: both brands are made of fabric, lightweight, and easy to slip on and off.

The brand is offered online in the UK, although I can’t see that they ship to the US. Office Shoes offers men’s, women’s & children’s sizes online, and they do ship to the US. Additionally, men’s style are available online at Topman in the US.

Today’s final item involves a garment most recently seen on last year’s Jubilee Tour, worn for Kate and William’s departure from Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, East Malaysia. It turns out the piece is by Diane von Furstenberg.

The frock is a classic DVF wrap dress showcasing a rich paisley pattern. Kate has had the dress for more than a decade however, she wore it to a party at St. Andrews in 2002, and again in 2005 for dinner with Prince William, a photo of the latter instance can be seen here.

The dress is 100% silk in a v-neck style with self-belt. There is pink piping at the cuffs of the three-quarter sleeves, pockets, collar and vertical front seaming detail. I believe the identification was made almost simultaneously by eBay Sellers CopyKate and Logman, many thanks to Franciele for sharing this information.

One quick reminder for those who may be pondering a donation to our Fundraiser for EACH, we would be ever-so-indebted for any small amount you may be able to give. If interested in posting one of our graphics (buttons, banners, and more), this link will show you the great selection of styles.othe giveaway over at the HRH Duchess Kate blog is still open, the winner will receive some lovely beachwear.

First Dibs: Is SNL‘s Seth Meyers Getting Jimmy Fallon’s Job?

by Meghan O'Keefe
Jesshelga

Sharing for the Arrested Development trailer.

firstdibs513

Is Barbara Walters finally retiring? What is season four of Arrested Development going to look like on Netflix? Did The Great Gatsby do great business at the box office?

  • Saturday Night Live’s Seth Meyers will be the new host of NBC’s Late Show when Jimmy Fallon leaves to take over The Tonight Show from Jay Leno. This also means that starting next year Weekend Update will have a new anchor (or two). [Deadline]
  • Veteran television host and news anchor Barbara Walters will be retiring in 2014. The 83-year-old announced yesterday that she is looking forward to one last year with ABC News and The View and then will be sitting “on a sunny field.” (No, really she said that.) [US Magazine]
  • Arrested Development is really, totally, actually, officially coming back. Netflix released a trailer for the long-awaited fourth season of the cult hit online last night and it looks pretty on point:
  • The Great Gatsby did shockingly great at the box office this weekend by beating industry expectations and raking in over $50 million. However, Iron Man 3 still pulled in more money and held on to the top spot with $72.5 million. [MTV News]
