Terrible Real Estate Photos

by Lisa Marcus

Terrible Real Estate Photos (previously featured at Neatorama) is a website full of shots that defy all realty rational thought and reason. Toilets smack dab in the middle of the kitchen. People wearing reflective gear while in the corner trying to hide from the camera. Carpets that look like Pigpen died on them. House-eating trees. If there's currently a feature that's slightly embarrassing in your house, something you've been meaning to get to, this site will make you feel a lot better about it.

The site recently published a book of these photos, perfect for your realtor friend or family member who is feeling down for making mistakes not nearly as egregious as these.

Proof That Christmas Isn't Always Magic

by Jill Harness

It's the most wonderful time of the year? Not for everyone and this delightful Awkward Family Photos post captures the ugly side of the holidays from crying babes to sleeping grandparents. The pictures are not only funny, but they're also a great way to make yourself feel better about your own insane family and awful Christmas photos.

Of course, the post also reminds us of one more thing: painfully bad photos can be good for something -even if it's just for a good laugh.

So if you have any awkward Christmas photos of your own, be sure to share them in the comments.

This Little Girl’s ASL Version of 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' Will Make Your Heart Grow 3 Sizes

by Arika Okrent

Last year a little Deaf girl named Shaylee stole our hearts with her adorable and linguistically sophisticated sign language performance of The Night Before Christmas. This year the ASL learning site ASLnook (run by her parents Sheena McFeely and Manny Johnson) features a new performance by Shaylee in which she tells the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. You can see her above, with her hair done up like Cindy Lou, bringing the story to life.

Once again she expresses the full range of her linguistic and storytelling skills, deftly shifting among the perspectives of many characters. To take just one example, in the section that starts at 1:00, she shows the Grinch’s perspective with a downward eye gaze. The Grinch is at the top of a mountain looking down on the festivities.

Then she switches to the perspective of the people he’s watching by shifting her gaze up.

Then she starts the next clause with a quick downward shift of the eyes. This tiny, subtle movement establishes that she is once again in the Grinch’s perspective.

And boy does he hate Christmas.

Eye gaze is just one of the many devices used in ASL storytelling to keep a story running smoothly and coherently. Shaylee, who is only 5 years old, shows impressive control over all of them. It’s enough to make your heart grow 3 sizes.

Church Plans Sunday Services Inside Buffalo Wild Wings

by Chris Morran

Do you want to go to church on Sundays but feel like the atmosphere isn’t enough like a sports bar? Then you might want to relocate to Birmingham, AL, where on Methodist church is partnering with a local Buffalo Wild Wings to hold Sunday morning services inside the chain eatery.

The Birmingham News reports that the Riverchase United Methodist Church has made a deal with an area BWW to open its doors early for services targeted to those who might be interested in a change of venue.

“We believe there’s a population that would attend a service there that wouldn’t go to a church,” the church’s minister of young adults explains. “We hope it’s going to be a more inviting atmosphere.”

While the restaurant won’t be open for business during the 45-minute service, both the church and the eatery are hoping that people will come for the prayer and stay for the hot wings.

“We’re going to encourage people to stay for lunch, stay for sports,” explains the minister, who says he’s already received quite a bit of interest in the service, especially from people who are already fans of the BWW. “This is part of the partnership. We’ll help them with their business because they’re helping us.”

Baby Barely

Baby Barely - Babies

“We were in vacation on Virginia visiting my aunt. My mom and dad thought it’d be a good idea to get a picture of my brother and I with the ocean in the background. And an even better idea letting my barely older than me brother hold me… the baby. Well, when my dad said “okay on the count of three” my brother Matt thought that meant to let go. My mom and aunt raced to grab me and caught me barely by the foot. My dad kept snapping the picture which resulted in this family classic.”

And You Thought Your Family Was Hard to Deal With

by Jill Harness

Thanksgiving dinner can be stressful for those with frustrating family members, but whatever drama exploded at your family's holiday dinner, this letter featured on Awkward Family Photos might just make you feel better about your own flesh and blood.

(Video Link)

It's pretty easy to start hating Marney just from her family letter, but when you see this interview with her, you might become a little more sympathetic, not necessarily because she defends herself well, but because she comes off looking more than a little bit cuckoo -just like some of your beloved family members.

If Toddlers Texted

by Lisa Marcus

It's no secret that toddlers can be a handful. At times, mommy or other caretakers are at their wit's end, and that's a dicey time when humor can be a great coping mechanism. Sometimes one just has to laugh, or else they might cry. There's a Tumblr for that. "If Toddlers Texted" is a Tumblr (and a Facebook page) that anyone at the mercy of the terrible twos (threes or fours) can visit to get perspective and some laughs.

Cranberry Relish

by Elise
Cranberry Relish

One of my favorite things to make for Thanksgiving and the holidays is raw cranberry relish. There’s no cooking involved, just using a grinder or a food processor to grind up and mix together raw cranberries, tart green apples, a large seedless orange, and sugar. It’s amazing how good it is! Great with roast turkey, or for leftovers on turkey sandwiches.

A Totally Cheesy, Meaty, Over-the-Top Thanksgiving Menu

by Niki Achitoff-Gray

Thanksgiving isn't exactly about the small things in life; it's about the big, corny stuff—family, friendship, gratitude, community...and food. Blissfully disgusting amounts of food. And, as with most bad decisions, I've always believed that if you're gonna overeat to the point of extreme physical discomfort, you might as well commit. Read More

Bible Verses Where the Word “Philistines” Has Been Replaced with “Haters”

by John Farrier

(Image: Júlio Ferreira)

Why worry? Philistines are gonna Philistine. So, as Taylor Swift advises, shake it off.

The great humor writer Molly Ortberg has previously brought us an Ayn Rand version of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stoneand stereotypical comments in recipe blogs. Most recently, she went through a Bible and replaced the word “Philistine” with the word “hater.” It totally works. Here’s a description of Abraham:

Genesis 26:14
“He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the haters envied him.”

The word appears a lot in the Book of Judges as the Israelite hero Samson deals with the Philistines:

Judges 14:3
“His father and mother replied, ‘Isn’t there an acceptable woman among your relatives or among all our people? Must you go to the uncircumcised haters to get a wife?’” […]

Judges 15:12
“They said to him, ‘We’ve come to tie you up and hand you over to the haters.'”

Judges 16:9
“With men hidden in the room, she called to him, ‘Samson, the haters are upon you!’ But he snapped the bowstrings as easily as a piece of string snaps when it comes close to a flame. So the secret of his strength was not discovered.”

Judges 16:30
“And Samson cried, ‘Let me die with the haters!’ And he bowed himself mightily, and the house fell upon the princes and upon all the people that were in it. So the dead whom he slew at his death were more than they whom he slew in his life.”

11 Benefits of Buying Handcrafted Products

Handcrafted products can offer higher quality and more attention to detail – but they can give buyers some surprising side benefits as well.

1. Handcrafted Products Are Green.

Work done by hand takes less energy than a mass production assembly line, which makes it more environmentally sustainable. This is particularly true if the commercial good is produced overseas and needs to be shipped a very long distance to reach the consumer.

2. Handcrafted Products Are Good for the Job Market.

Another reason you should feel good about spending your money on hand-crafted products? Doing so creates jobs. One study found that shifting just 10 percent of consumer spending in a particular area to locally owned businesses would create hundreds of new jobs and millions of dollars in local wages.

3. Handcrafted Products Are Worth More.

A number of experiments have shown that people value an object more highly when they are led to believe it contains an “air of authenticity,” for example, if they were told it was a work of art. This means that artisan products, be they jewelry or jam, are perceived to have more value in society.

4. Handcrafted Products Are Also Just Better.

It’s not just an amorphous air of authenticity that causes people to shell out more for handcrafted products. Handcrafted goods are often just better. A study of coffee found that 47 percent of respondents said it tastes better when prepared by hand compared to just 11 percent who are happy to settle for machine-produced drinks.

5. Handcrafted Products Make You Feel Good About Your Purchases.

And if you’re like most Americans, that’s something you prioritize. A 2012 survey found that 87 percent of American consumers felt that businesses should place at least as much weight on society's interests as they do on business interests. Supporting local artisans and their eco-conscious business practices certainly fits the bill.

6. Handcrafted Products Help Communities.

Studies have shown that locally owned independent businesses —many of which sell wares produced by hand— return a higher percentage of their revenue to their communities than chains. That means the people who make money off sales at independent businesses, owners and employees, are more likely to spend their salary at places in the same area where they work.

7. Handcrafted Products Can Meet Your Needs Better.

Often with handmade goods, you have the option of customizing your purchase. Because you’re often dealing directly with the artisans when you purchase handcrafted products, they might be open to tweaking certain aspects of the product specifically to fit your needs.

8. Handcrafted Products Offer a Fuller Experience.

A study researching cheeses in Vermont found that consumers prefer buying “artisan” cheese because they feel it provides a fuller “sensory experience.” This is a factor of both intrinsic properties, like better taste, and extrinsic properties, like the joy of finding something you really love. Even just the knowledge that a product was handcrafted contributed to the feeling of a better experience because there is a relatable, knowable back-story.

9. Handcrafted Products Are Easier to Buy and More Popular Than Ever.

The Internet is packed with a burgeoning industry of handmade marketplaces – more and more people are embracing handcrafted goods. Some handcrafted sites saw a 71 percent increase in sales in just one year from 2010 to 2011. Buying handmade goods online allows you access to the skills of artisans around the world.

10. Handcrafted Products Are Unique.

One of the most prevalent, although least quantifiable, reasons people report for choosing to purchase handcrafted goods is that they just like having something that didn’t come from a big company. The nature of handmade goods means that there are fewer of them, so whatever you’re wearing or eating or adding to your home is as unique as you are.

11. Handcrafted Products Support a Tradition of Skilled Work.

We’ve seen that supporting your local artisan is good for the community, but it’s also good for the art. As technology makes it possible to replace skilled workers with machines it’s important to keep hand-making goods a financially feasible career choice.

Recipe: Southwestern Butternut Squash Soup — Recipes from The Kitchn

by Emma Christensen
Pin it button big

Butternut squash soup is one of those meals that defines autumn for me. Pretty much as soon as the leaves begin showing hints of orange, I start scooping up these big-bottomed squashes at the market and putting this creamy soup on the regular meal rotation.

This fall, I thought I'd mix things up a bit and add a Southwestern spin to my usual butternut squash soup. Cumin and coriander add spicy warmth while a squeeze of orange and lime give it a hit of late-fall sunshine.

The Food Lab: Introducing Vegetables Wellington, the Plant-Based Vegan Roast Even Meat Eaters Will Want

by J. Kenji López-Alt

Coming up with a vegan holiday roast is a daunting task! It can't just take the place of the turkey or the prime rib nutritionally, it's got to cover all of those mental bases as well. Not only does it have to taste spectacular, but it's got to look stunning at the center of the table, with rich, deep flavors that scream fall and winter. What I ended up with was a vegan roast that is so pretty, so mouth-watering, so packed with flavor and texture that even the hardcore carnivores at the table will want to make room on their plate for a slice, perhaps even instead of that turkey. I call it Vegetables Wellington. Read More

Revenge Bento

by Miss Cellania

Some mothers in Japan make creative bento lunches for their children every day -and they make them for their husbands, too. Every once in a while, married people are not on the best of terms with each other. A woman who gets up to make bento for a man she is angry with may make a lunch that differs from the usual creative, lovingly-packed lunch. The blog IroMegane collected some examples of Shikaeshi Bento (仕返し弁当) or “revenge lunchbox,” for which you can imagine a salaryman opening his lunch in front of his co-workers and finding out exactly how angry his wife is with him.

Some have snarky sayings cut from seaweed, in Japanese, so you have to read the captions. Some are illustrated, like the cockroaches at the top. Others are just difficult, like the corn. All he has to eat it with is chopsticks! See more of these at IroMegane. -via Metafilter
