How To Make Lactation Cookies — DIY Mama

by Amy Palanjian
DIY Mama: 20 Small Luxuries for Mamas & Their Babies

My memories of the weeks after my first daughter was born are hazy at best. I remember that she cried a lot, absolutely hated her car seat, and loved it when we bounced with her on an exercise ball — and that I was continually grabbing handfuls of food to satisfy my appetite. Breastfeeding hunger is no joke, especially when you're nursing every two or three hours around the clock in those early days.

Think of lactation cookies as a new mama's best mealtime secret: They can be made ahead of time, are easy to eat with one hand, and help ensure a healthy milk supply for baby. Oh, and they taste pretty great, too.

by Faith Durand
DIY Mama: 20 Small Luxuries for Mamas & Their Babies

Sometimes the best homemade luxuries are the ones that soothe and relax, like herbal balm and hot tea for nursing mothers, or a calming room spray for the nursery. Abbye Churchill, editorial director of the beautiful Wilder Quarterly, brings you a week of small apothecary projects for mama and baby — or anyone who would like a little homemade pampering.

How to Make Zhug, the Yemenite Hot Sauce You'll Want to Put on Everything

by J. Kenji López-Alt

This Yemenite sauce is fresh and bright from herbs, while also having an intensely spicy kick to it. It's the ideal accompaniment for falafel or sabich sandwiches, but it also goes great with a variety of grilled vegetables, fish, meat, and eggs. And it should last a few weeks in the fridge (though I've never had a jar linger long enough to actually find out). Read More

Deviled Dragon Eggs

by John Farrier

What would the Mother of Dragons do for Easter? Not what redditor Cakorator did. With red gel, egg yolks, mayonnaise, mustard, sriracha, cayenne pepper, and a pastry bag with a size 5 tip, s/he made these adorable treats. They don't breathe fire, but with enough sriracha and cayenne pepper, you might after you eat them.

Six Different Types Of Board Gamers

by Zeon Santos

Gamers who enjoy the feel of dice, miniatures, boards and cards often become avid board gamers, and these days board games run the gamut from insanely difficult and time consuming to easy to learn and quick yet fun to play.

Many board game enthusiasts are akin to the eager little Puppy when they first get the gaming itch- they dig the whole scene and are eager to play again.

But when addiction has fully set in, and playing is no longer just about having fun, that's when  a gamer's dark side comes out and playing a board game becomes a very serious affair.

Dorkly's Tony Wilson and Jake Young created this illustrated guide to board gamers a few years back, which helped me identify a few gamers in my group who might be hiding their sinister side from the rest of us...

Do You Feel Anticipation Or Anxiety When You Look At These Photos?

by Zeon Santos

These studio photos created by Aaron Tilley have proven to be quite polarizing when people view them, generally dividing viewers into two groups- those who anticipate and those who get anxious.

The anticipators can't wait to see what happens when the swinging rock strikes a match head thereby setting hundreds of matches ablaze, and they really look forward to watching these bricks smash that glass:

The anxious group, however, can't wait to look away from Aaron's utterly nerve-wracking images and take a Xanax.

Thankfully, you don't have to tell anyone which group you're in, because everyone around you will have a good idea whether you're anxious or not after you finish skimming through this post!

Every Day, This Mom Gives Her Little Girl Incredible Braids

by John Farrier

There seems to be nothing that Shelley Gifford can't do with her daughter's hair. Every day, she sends her 6-year old daughter Grace to school with an inventive style. It takes her about 15-20 minutes to weave this kind of astonishing artistry.

And she's entirely self-taught! Gifford has been braiding for only 2 years. She tells the Today show that it's a great creative outlet:

"I try and think of a new style each night for the following day," said Gifford, who teaches mothers how to braid and does special occasion braid work. "I like trying to be creative with my braiding."

Faker

by Miss Cellania

We start out reading this comic believing that the baby is the one faking, He’s not really in distress; he just wants your attention. Then it becomes apparent that Dad remembers how to fake a really deep sleep. But Mom knows, too, and what to do about it. Mom doesn't fool around. You can laugh, if you’re far removed from those sleep-deprived days of caring for an infant. And there are a lot of women who remember crawling into the crib just to get a little alone time. This comic is from Lunarbaboon.

Sam’s Club To Accept Visa Credit Cards As Of February 1

by Laura Northrup

(Mike Mozart)
Shoppers at Sam’s Club will no longer need to ensure that they have the correct credit card on hand or that they’ve brought cash: as of February 1, 2015, the warehouse club will begin accepting Visa credit cards in its stores, finally making all four credit card networks accepted in its stores.

Wait… didn’t Sam’s already accept Visa? That’s complicated, and it involves the fees each credit network charged to Sam’s and to corporate parent Walmart. We shoppers don’t see these fees, but when you’re a mega-retailer like Walmart, small differences in fees make a huge difference.

Last fall, Sam’s began accepting American Express, after AmEx and Costco announced that their exclusive partnership would be ending in the spring of 2016. While you couldn’t use Visa credit cards inside the stores, Sam’s did accept all four major credit cards for online purchases, as well as at the gas stations outside of some stores.

Old-school Sam’s Club members will remember when Discover was the only credit card that Sam’s accepted, though cash, checks, and debit cards were also available options. Giving customers more payment choices may be part of their efforts to appeal to more upscale shoppers than it has historically: seekers of organic baby kale may not be pleased if their credit card choice is limited.

Sleeping

by Miss Cellania

The great thing about comics is that you can make the characters do all those horrible things that cross your mind, but would never do in real life. This is a totally alien scenario for me, because I’ve never lived with a man who got up and went to work while I remained in bed asleep. But I’ve always been an early riser. This is the latest from Lunarbaboon.
