“right to have sex” is probably the most terrifying phrase I have ever heard

Yes, I 100% want to eradicate the idea that men have a “right to have sex”. Sex is not something that’s owed to you just for existing.

siriusly-smart:

I’m re-reading Order of the Phoenix at the moment, and can we just take a minute to appreciate Fleur Delacour?

> 17 year old Fleur hears about a dangerous contest which will threaten her life and involve her having to leave her home country, alongside her beloved little sister, for a year. Her response is “sign me the fuck up”, but in French.

> 18 year old Fleur spots handsome 25 year old redhead talking to Harry Potter, decides she’s having that one, files this information away for later.

> 18 year old Fleur survives the tournament and returns home to France. Less than four weeks after graduating school, still 18 year old Fleur is back in Britain, taking a job in a bank to improve her English, where she is reacquainted with the aforementioned 25 year old redhead.

> 18 year old Fleur wastes no time in securing ‘private lessons’ with Bill Weasley.

> 19 year old Fleur visits her now-fiancé’s family for the summer, putting up with their blatant dislike of her because this is about Bill.

> 20 year old Fleur is disgusted at the idea that she’d love her fiancé any less for a few scars.

> 20 year old Fleur risks her life to get Harry Potter the heck outta Dodge.

> 20 year old Fleur marries that still-hot redhead, dammit, and fuck Voldemort for trying to interfere.

> 21 year old Fleur distracts Harry and Remus so that the Weasleys may reunite privately.

> 21 year old Fleur survives the Battle of Hogwarts

We all need to appreciate Fleur a little more, is what I’m saying. She got shit done.

I had a cat who hated me taking baths. She would get up on the rim of the tub, and just circle it, meeping at me to get out! get out! save yourself, stupid human!
I didn't fault her motives, but her methods...
So one day I filled the tub and waited to get in. She jumped up on the rim, and I just gave her butt a tiny little nudge.
Y'ever see a cat sling-shot itself out of a full bathtub? It's a sight.
Anyway, from that day forward, she restricted herself to yelling at me from the bathroom door.

Campaign Zero team has a productive meeting with Bernie Sanders to discuss racial injustice

by rss@dailykos.com (Shaun King)
Campaign Zero team meets with Bernie Sanders
Bernie Sanders meets with Campaign Zero team
On September 16, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders held a private hour-long meeting with a strong collection of activists to discuss police brutality and the complex system of racial injustice in America.

The team was largely represented by Campaign Zero, a new policy collective that has helped to spark a national dialogue on meaningful solutions to police brutality. Participants were overwhelmingly positive but slightly measured in their remarks about how the meeting went.

Johnetta Elzie said that the senator's “answers to our questions around race, racism, systematic oppression in America as it relates to black people in this country weren't perfect" and that she had not expected them to be.

“I can say Bernie Sanders was very open to being pushed,” Elzie added. She pointed out that while Sanders needs the black vote, it's unclear whether he’d be as eager to listen to the black community after being elected.

“I also made it very clear that he has not won over a large demographic of black people in this country no matter how progressive he seems and that his policy platform, that his past history of dealing with black people, from his place of power in VT is also a concern in our community," she continued.

Many of the leaders present in the meeting shared their thoughts about it on Twitter. You can read them below.

It's AWESOME that we caught what happened to this ONE kid, but I don't for a moment think that doing this has made America better.

as cool it is that obama and zuckerberg and NASA reached out to ahmed, if the folks in power don’t follow those tweets up with policy changes and civil rights investigations into racist and islamophobic administrative policies, there will be another ahmed mohamed arrested tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, because not everyone’s case makes the news and hashtag awareness is not enough

"The chances of getting shot by a female cop are slim, and it’s not just because there are so few..."

The chances of getting shot by a female cop are slim, and it’s not just because there are so few women in police departments. Data show that female cops discharge their firearms at rates far below their male counterparts, face significantly fewer civilian complaints and are less likely than men to resort to unnecessary physical force when arresting someone.

The evidence is not just statistical. As a veteran female officer explained recently, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid damaging relationships with her colleagues, “I’ve never been in a fight on my own, because I never had to. I’ve only been in fights instigated by my male counterparts.”

Studies also show that female police officers are more inclined to view their job as a public service than men do and are better at communication, de-escalation and trust building — all hallmarks of community policing.

“Ok, so you thought the boy made a bomb.”

“Yes.”

“And instead of evacuating the school, you pulled him out of class, arrested in front of everyone, then interrogated him, on the premises without getting the children to safety?  So, we’re going to put you up for criminal endangerment of this entire school”

“Well, uh, maybe we didn’t really think it was a bomb”

“Oh, ok, so instead you lied to police and federal authorities in order to bring up false charges against a minor for… kicks? I mean, you’re basically picking between which charges you’d like to go up on here.   Let me know, so we can get the paperwork right.”

saxifraga-x-urbium: paracartography: Yes, of course I’ve heard what the superstitious locals say:...

ThePrettiestOne

"some kind"
Not "good kind"

saxifraga-x-urbium:

paracartography:

Yes, of course I’ve heard what the superstitious locals say: “Stay out of the mountains! There’s no shelter on those harsh peaks, and every last combe and glen is infested with killer spiders!”. They say there’s no way to safely cross that mountain range - anyone trying to rest high up on the peaks will die of exposure, lashed by cruel icy winds. Better that, though, than to risk seeking shelter in the forested vales.

The Crawling Death, they call it. Great glossy black eight-legged fiends, some small enough to creep between the rings of your maille, some large as a splayed hand and quick as a cat, and some - so they say - the size of dogs. Or swine. Or cart-horses. The tales have been exaggerated in the telling, of course, since hardly anyone dares venture far into the gullies and ravines that lace between the majestic peaks (most certainly not at night, when the Crawling Death make their appearance, silent as a shadow).

Even if they’re not quite as large as people say, they’re certainly no less deadly. The king’s physicians, who had the unenviable task of tending to the survivors of the last failed expedition, wrote down in stomach-turning detail the precise symptoms of that merciless venom. Erupting blisters the size of a hen’s egg. Flesh blackening, rotting, and sloughing away from the bone. Sweating, drooling, trembling, nausea, vomiting, ranting and raving and spasming like a creature possessed until death seems like a mercy. Others were gripped with a pain unmatched by any wound of war, paired (curiously) with an erection hard as any standing stone.

And yet, in spite of all this, I’m planning an expedition into the mountains. It’s true, I haven’t the equipment with me to safely shelter from the bitter cold above the tree-line, out of the reach of skittering legs and poison-slick fangs. I have no blessing from the gods, and no miracle of alchemy intended to keep the Crawling Death at bay. What I do have, though, is a map. A map from a past age, a more enlightened age, where the cartographers had a decent understanding of the sciences, rather than the encyclopaedic knowledge of rumour and superstition that seems to be the requirement for a mapmaker these days. And from this map - and the journals that I found with it - I have deduced one particularly salient fact, that I am convinced will allow me to make the journey through the supposedly arachnid-infested ravines in perfect safety.

The superstitious peasants might say every last one of those valleys is crawling with deadly poisonous creatures, but in fact, most of them are utterly empty and safe! However, my map has revealed the source of this rumour: Spiders Gorge, which contains over ten thousand spiders, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

i feel you deserve some sort of prize for this

I’m broken. I’m furiously happy. Both of these things are true.

by thebloggess
ThePrettiestOne

Oh, great, now I'm crying at work.

If you’ve been reading here you know that my next book comes out in a few days.  It’s subtitled “A funny book about horrible things” because Furiously Happy is all about looking for the light in spite of the dark parts of life that weigh us down.  It’s easy to lose yourself in the fog so when you find your way out it’s important to celebrate that victory with joy so that you can remember it and carry that hope and that memory with you the next time you go back into battle.

I have clinical depression, severe anxiety disorder, chronic pain, and a host of other disorders.  My broken, dark times are terrible…but the bright, furiously happy moments are blinding.  I wanted to find a way to share that but I couldn’t do it alone, so I reached out on the internet and asked for volunteers brave enough to share with me.  And thousands of you responded and the responses broke my heart and then made it stronger again.  I wish I had 100 videos because there were so many amazing stories I wanted to share, but I only have one video and I hope (and believe) it’s strong enough to inspire us all a little.

(Click here if you don’t see the video, or want to make it bigger.)

So now what?  That’s up to you.  You can watch the video and if it speaks to you you can share it.  If you are moved to then you can share your own words in the comments.  If you want to share your own images of why you are broken but still furiously happy to inspire others that would be amazing.  (And if you tag it with #furiouslyhappy others will be able to see it and share.)  Or if you simply watch it once and it makes you smile then it’s done its job.

PS.  An enormous thank you to everyone who shared their words, to the brave people who sent in video – both to the people you recognize and already love, and to the people you don’t recognize but love now. Thank you to the people who were on board until it was time to film and then realized they just couldn’t do it, because your strength in saying, “No, I’m not quite ready to share this yet” is inspiring and a reminder that self-care comes in many forms.  Thank you to my niece Gabi who wrote and played the song on the video, and thank you to the creative team who made this a reality.  And thank you for watching.  And sharing.  And supporting.  And for saving me and so many others.  Thank you for everything that you are.

What ‘The Wall Street Journal’ Gets Totally Wrong About Bernie Sanders’s Agenda

What ‘The Wall Street Journal’ Gets Totally Wrong About Bernie Sanders’s Agenda:

drst:

sanders4prez:

This week, The Wall Street Journal dropped a terrifyingly large number on Senator Bernie Sanders’s upstart campaign, warning that his proposals would carry a “price tag” of $18 trillion over a 10-year period. It’s a number designed to shock and awe and discourage voters from giving the social democrat’s ideas a close look.

But according to the very data cited by The Journal’s Laura Meckler, Sanders’s highly progressive proposals wouldn’t cost the United States a single penny, on net, over that 10-year window. In fact, they’d cost less, overall, than what we’d spend without them.

It’s not hard to understand why. The lion’s share of the “cost”—$15 trillion—would pay for opening up Medicare to Americans of all ages. (Meckler notes that Sanders hasn’t released a detailed proposal, so she relies on an analysis of HR 676, Representative John Conyers’s Medicare-for-all bill.)

“In other words, Sanders’s Medicare expansion would cost $15 trillion, but without it American businesses and taxpayers would spend $20 trillion over the same period, while still leaving millions uninsured.”

startorialist: It shouldn’t need saying, but time and time...

startorialist:

It shouldn’t need saying, but time and time again another incident reminds us that we need to shout it: science is for everyone! Children shouldn’t be arrested for science projects, whether or not they are wearing NASA t-shirts, but that made the most recent incident hit even closer to home for a lot of scientists and engineers and even astronauts. Yesterday Ahmed’s story inspired people to support him by carrying clocks and/or wearing NASA shirts so we thought we’d help in our own little way.

NASA shirt from Target

NASA shirt from Kennedy Space Center

Retro NASA shirt from modcloth

NASA “worm” logo shirt from Amazon

Vintage NASA sweater from skippy haha on etsy

(And even more NASA goodies from etsy)

Science doesn’t care what anyone looks like. But people do science, and people are biased and prejudiced, even when they are trying not to be. It has actually been one of our ulterior motives to combat this with STARtorialist. We want to make it easier for people who don’t “look like” scientists to be accepted in the community and culture of science and at the same time to change the way everyone thinks of scientists. Are we making progress toward that goal? You will be able to help us find out soon… watch this space!
