#26. Laura Roslin & Kara Thrace

Look. This. Oh my God. So. I’m rewriting the series for Ephemerides and shit has changed in the au sure but I couldn’t change everything because I had to keep the speech Kara gives in the lower left gif, the one with the line that I adore and am seriously considering getting inked on me, slightly altered (”We are all family, and none of us belong here”) because that SCENE. THAT SCENE.  The summation of everything they’ve both been through and everything they’ve fought for - both with and against each other - and they’re so close Kara can taste it but Roslin is just so suspicious of miracles at that point because they always keep turning on her, poisoned…  My heart breaks into itty bitty pieces every time but I love it anyway, Augh.  Their faces.  I can’t.

Terrence Wise is a 36-year-old, 2nd-generation fast-food worker. He’s been in the industry for nearly two decades and works two jobs. He makes only $8 per hour.

His fiancé is a home health care worker. She’s been in the industry for 12 years. She makes just $10 per hour.

Watch Terrence tell his story about why he’s fighting for a better, fairer workplace.

Why are you working in fast food. There is no excuse why you don’t have a better job, it really isn’t that hard to find a job that pays more than $10hour even at that age

You tell them to get a better job but you won’t create those jobs for them. You tell them to go into fast food to begin with because they’re always hiring, and then degrade them for working in the only available options. You tell them finding a job that pays better is easy, and yet you refuse to pay minimum wage workers a living wage.

You do this all while simultaneously degrading them for the services they provide that YOU couldn’t live without– fast food, janitorial services, house cleaning, the person at the checkout stand at the grocery store, your bagger at the grocery store, your barista, the server  and busser at your favorite restaurant (who is primarily paid in tips), the person that watches your kids (if you can afford it), teachers, nursing assistants, EMTs, your local pharmacy tech, line cooks, your favorite auto mechanic… Those wonderful and overworked people who do your nails and wax your eyebrows for you at whatever nail salon you choose to go to regularly that get made fun of and degraded for their thick accents and speaking to each other in a foreign language while spending decades away from their family in their home countries. And even worse, are the people who aren’t paid minimum wage at all: the migrant labor that picks the majority of your fruits and veggies, who are seasonal workers, who don’t legally have to be paid minimum wage because the agriculture business is purposefully left out of federal minimum wage limits to continue to force people to work in deadly, degrading conditions for pennies an hour.

Do none of these people deserve a voice to you? I think they deserve to be heard far more than you, who degrades them for doing work you wouldn’t sink to do, who finds yourself above the people who provide services that without, our entire society wouldn’t even function. And that is cruel. They are still human beings, they deserve a comfortable life without having to live paycheck to paycheck. Their job does not define their humanity. And let’s not even begin with the amount of disabled persons who physically are unable to work, or who are forced to despite massive amounts of risk to their health. Do those people also not matter to you? Because that’s what it sounds like.

Do not degrade the people who provide the services you could never deign to do yourself, that you literally couldn’t live comfortably without, while demanding those same services. You and your hypocritical nature can fuck right off. Minimum wage workers deserve a fucking living wage just like every other person in the workforce– WITHOUT having to find other, “better” jobs in order to make a living wage.

@ask-an-mra-anything @geekandmisandry @fandomsandfeminism

👆👆👆 Preach !

YOU CANNOT DEGRADE SOMEONE WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY DEMANDING THEIR SERVICES. I will shout this until the day I die.

Halloween PSA

ThePrettiestOne

OK, so my first thought was, "Shit, do people really do that?" and my second thought, after I recalled my time in customer service was "Of course they do, don't be daft."

mchomiestuck:

As an employee of Party City for the Halloween season I request that you do not go to your local Halloeen store and harass the employees about how racist and sexist the costumes are. Chances are that they are well aware of this fact and can’t do anything about it.

A about 75% of Halloween employees, like myself, are temporary and are only there till the start of November.

The employees do not make any decisions of what costumes or props we sell. Not even our general managers do that. The corporate company the makes and distributes the costumes do all the decision making. Party City owns said company.

So, if you want to complain about the racist and sexist costumes please go to corporate. The store employees have no  power and can not help you.

PLEASE DO NOT HARASS THE STORE EMPLOYEES. THANK YOU.

Tennessee drug tests for welfare law uncovers a whopping 55 drug users

by rss@dailykos.com (Laura Clawson)
ThePrettiestOne

We will spend any amount of money to make sure that "our" money isn't "wasted" on poor people who don't "deserve" it.

Drug test
Why drug-testing government assistance applicants is a giant waste of time and money, part the umpteenth. Tennessee implemented the type of drug-testing-for-welfare that passes constitutional muster, in which every welfare applicant is asked three questions about drug use and if they answer yes to any of the questions, they have to take a drug test. Alan Pyke lays out the results:
In total, just 1.6 percent of the 28,559 people who applied for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits in the first year of testing answered one of the three screening questions positively. Out of the 468 people who peed in a state-funded cup, 11.7 percent flunked the test.

With 55 people testing positive for drugs out of an applicant pool of nearly 30,000, Tennessee’s testing system uncovered that a whopping 0.19 percent of those who applied for aid were drug users. Ultimately, 32 applicants were denied benefits for failing to complete the state’s mandatory drug rehab process for those who test positive.

Tennessee officials say the year of testing cost $11,000, or $200 per failed drug test. But that only accounts for what the state paid to the outside vendor who conducted the actual tests, excluding staff hours that went into processing the new application materials and managing the logistics of testing those who gave an affirmative answer to a screening question.

I'm honestly not sure which of these numbers is the most striking. Is it the low low percentage who have answered yes to having used illegal drugs, having lost or not gotten a job because of drug use, or having had to go to court over drug use in the past three months? Or is it the fact that of the people who answered yes to one of those questions, less than 12 percent didn't pass a drug test? Tennessee put in place a big new bureaucracy based on the stigmatizing and incorrect assumption that people in need of help are more likely to use drugs, and they found ... 55 people. Way to go, guys!

But these laws are really all about putting the hatred of and contempt for poor people into law, so on that front, mission accomplished.

“Not all conservative Christians are like that.”

Okay look.

If you’re a senior in high school, and your freshman little sister comes up to you with bloody scraped knees and tears all over her face crying, “I hate seniors! They always bully me!” you don’t stand there and lecture her on why she shouldn’t label all seniors as bullies.

You don’t fucking do that shit.

You say, “Don’t worry. I’ll make sure those seniors don’t pick on you.“

You take responsibility for protecting her.

Because she’s your little sister. And she can’t fight bullies on her own.

That’s how privilege fucking works. Women, gay people, black people, trans people, Muslims, every single minority in the United States—they’re the little sisters getting beat up by your fellow upperclassmen. You don’t make it their responsibility. YOU TAKE IT UPON YOURSELF TO HELP THEM.

Kurdish pop star Helly Luv risked her life to shoot an anti-ISIS music video 2 miles from the front lines

Pop artist Helly Luv is seemingly full of contradictions: She’s outspoken about anti-violence, but fired a shell at an Islamic State settlement while filming a music video. She was born in the conservative Iran, but leads a life in the West as a revolutionary pop star. For her, music is political. This is why she insisted on filming the music video for her song “Revolution” in her ethnic home of northern Iraq. “If I can fight against them with my music, then my song is as powerful as or more powerful than their weapons.”

huffingtonpost: 26 Halloween Costumes That Never, Ever Needed...

ThePrettiestOne

You know, it says a lot about this country that we encourage so many young women to dress up as sexy-somethings on Halloween... when we are supposed to be dressing up as things that we find frightening, to keep the demons at bay.

huffingtonpost:

26 Halloween Costumes That Never, Ever Needed To Be Sexy

Ah, Halloween. That wonderful time of year when we all get to overindulge in candy and dress up in our favorite ghoulish or clever costumes. It’s also, of course, a time when companies trot out the classic “sexy” costume for women. A cop becomes a “sexy” cop, a nurse becomes a “sexy” nurse, and a nerd becomes a “sexy” nerd – the less fabric, the better.

“Xena was the kind of heroine no one had really seen on TV for a long time, if ever. Sure, the show was campy, and with her whip and Betty Paige bangs, she pinged a few fetish bells, but she also kicked ass unapologetically. This was an awesome action hero who happened to be a lady—something that’s still rare and precious. Just seeing her on television was empowering and inspiring for girls and women everywhere, and Xena became an instant sensation. The runaway success of the warrior princess blazed a trail for all the Buffys, Sydney Bristows, Starbucks, and Peggy Carters that would follow by proving how awesome, and successful, a female hero could be.”

inrealityadream:

tumblr meme culture is really just a form of neo dadaism

I’d like to clarify:

dada was a largely european art movement that took place after wwi. this time and place is not a coincidence. let me explain.

dada art made no sense. the artists who made dada lived in a world in which nothing made sense - in which conventional logic led to the senselessness of a world war. so, making art that made no sense, making - well, you can’t really call it art, so making ANTI-art that rejected the conventions that brought about that atrocity in the first place - it made total sense. (if that makes any sense.)

so the artists did weird things. new things! putting things that were already made together and calling it sculpture, cutting up bits of pictures and putting them together and calling that something to frame - this site has some nice examples.

but from my perspective - there’s serious intellectual continuity between the absurdity of attaching a bunch of tacks to the bottom of an iron, rendering it useless, and say…. bath bomb posts. Put a fucking macbook in a bath. it’s useless now. Nobody fucking cares anymore. you want something funny? you want a punchline? gun. that’s your punchline. Take it. I am laughing

in a way it could be a method of venting some of the frustration and hopelessness and dissatisfaction that tumblr’s userbase (largely, disenfranchised millennials) feels in the modern day. I can’t really speak for anyone else, but… at least from a US perspective, there’s plenty to be disillusioned about. growing up in a constant state of questionably justified war, income inequality, an economic recession caused by the actions of a handful of wealthy fucks who didn’t even get properly punished, growing awareness of police brutality, being called lazy and self-absorbed by the generations that gave us these problems in the first place… I can’t help but think that these factors (and more) could produce a similar mindset to the one that precipitated the first dada movement.

so of COURSE we make nonsense jokes. it’s a coping mechanism for a world which doesn’t make any sense.

related: this isn’t by tumblr but I have to plug UCLA’s atrocity of a virtual gallery once more. it really needs to be experienced, but… it’s definitely also millennial neo dada. from the presentation (like an unplayable video game) to the content (THE DOGS HAVE ARRIVED), it is exactly what I am talking about. it is a fucking shitpost. and it’s high art, too! I love this

tl;dr: my generation is fed up with this bullshit, and the best way that we can express that is by shitposting. alternatively, dada was an early precursor to modern shitposting and we should all thank duchamp for signing a fucking urinal

a dear friend has given a perfect update to some of my phrasing, courtesy of their word replace extension:

you see this? this is exactly what I’m fucking talking about. the thing that I’m talking about is:

So ya know how anti-choice trashcans say "what if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of a fetus that gets aborted?"

queenevea:

jehovahhthickness:

g-l-i-t-t-e-r:

But since fetuses already knowing advanced medical sciences aren’t a thing, I figured I’d provide some more valid alternatives:

What if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of someone who has a “black sounding” name and gets their school application thrown out?

What if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of someone who accidentally becomes pregnant where abortion is illegal or very difficult to access and they are forced to quit the sciences to raise the child?

What if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of a fat person whose credibility in the medical field is destroyed because they are assumed to be “unhealthy” and a hypocrite?

What if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of a person who starves to death?

What if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of someone who is murdered by drones or police?

What if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of someone who is raped and cannot continue their research due to trauma?

What if the cure for cancer lives in the mind of someone who is killed in a shooting because some below average teen boy couldn’t get laid?

I mean if you wanna talk about real life actual things that prevent scientific advancement look no further than capitalism, misogyny, ableism, racism, violence, oppression. But I guess that doesn’t allow you to control people’s bodies and push your gross agenda.

"Here is the thing. The old guard in comics are comfortable with feminism mostly under very strict..."

“Here is the thing. The old guard in comics are comfortable with feminism mostly under very strict guidelines. It has to be palatable to them. They are VERY comfortable with characters who spout faux female empowerment slogans while wearing skin-tight rubber bands or whatever. They are comfortable with characters who say GIRL POWER loudly, as long as they don’t actually accomplish anything or overshadow the hero. And now they are comfortable with super adorable little pixie heroines, because they wrongly believe they pose no threat to the status quo. But when female characters actually act with agency and are immune to being tut-tutted, there is still a lot of pushback. HOWEVER! I think the audience has moved past this, mostly. I think the audience is ahead of the industry.”

Ben Carson wouldn't just stand there and be shot, he'd suggest someone else gets shot

by rss@dailykos.com (Laura Clawson)
ThePrettiestOne

LEADERSHIP

U.S. Republican candidate Dr. Ben Carson speaks during an appearance on Fox News Channel's 'Hannity' in New York October 5, 2015. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid  - RTS35WG
Ben Carson has repeatedly explained that if he was in a mass shooting, he would not just wait to be shot. No, sir, "I would not just stand there and let him shoot me, I would say, ‘Hey guys, everybody attack him. He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all." The world was like "um, you don't really know how you'd respond to a mass shooting," so Carson decided to tell the story of a time he was held at gunpoint:
"I have had a gun held on me when I was in a Popeye's organization" in Baltimore, the retired neurosurgeon told Karen Hunter on Sirius XM Radio, referring to the fried chicken fast-food chain.

"Guy comes in, put the gun in my ribs. And I just said, 'I believe that you want the guy behind the counter,'" Carson.

Turn your gun on the other guy! That's an extremely brave and high-minded response. I guess what Carson didn't say about his "everybody attack the mass shooter" plan is that he'd be using someone else as a human shield.

elizabethlikes:

do you know what i want?

i want an lgbt+ tv show/movie that’s not a drama

i want a how i met your mother to be about a pansexual ted mosby and the running joke is that barney’s offended ted doesn’t find him attractive

i want a legally blonde to be about a lipstick lesbian who goes to law school to get her girlfriend back

i want a that ‘70s show where jackie is bisexual and between dating kelso and hyde she brings her ugly ass girlfriends with her to hang out with the gang (because there’s no way she can have a woman in her life prettier than herself)

i want a 13 going on 30 where jenna rink wakes up to be 30 years old and his name is michael rink and he still falls in love with matty from the house next door

i want a parks & recreation where ann perkins is asexual but still becomes pregnant via artificial insemination because ann is perfect and would be the best mother in the history of ever

being lgbt+ doesn’t have to be the focal point of a movie or show

like i understand it’s still a pretty bold move in media but like i’m just getting sick of all of the representation being the ultra dramatic main premise of it all

there are so many lgbt+ dramas. just give me my sitcom.
