yoda initially refusing to teach luke in empire is so fucking funny with the added “context” of the prequels… luke is like, “hey i’m sure this soup is delicious but i’m not really hungry so can we please get a move on here i feel like we’re wasting our time” and yoda just… sighs gravely and turns away and summons obi-wan’s spirit and is like, “i cannot teach him… much anger in him… like his father” like yoda PLEASE chill all he did was refuse your five-alarm chili and you’re already having flashbacks to anakin slaughtering a roomful of children

#for real even when aunt beru and uncle owen are like ‘he has too much of his father in him!!1’#i mean what#in what way does luke ‘19 year old who plays with toy ships and gets ass kicked by sand people’ skywalker remind you of anakin (via @themoonslayer)

In that the farm isn’t enough.  In that Tatooine and the homestead aren’t enough.  In that being a farmer isn’t enough.  In that he has dreams and passions and hope and futures that are bigger than what the Lars’ can ever offer.  In that simmering just under the surface is rage and desire and a sort of burning desperation to be free.  In an impatience that borders on arrogance.  In the sort of raw power that fills his veins.  Luke is his father’s son–but tempered, honed, focused.  Because Luke Skywalker is not afraid of the dark.

#DAMN RIGHT #Luke being like Anakin isn’t a bad thing #Anakin was a good person #manipulated and groomed by someone #for over 10 years #Luke is what Ani would’ve been #and that’s why Luke was the one to save Anakin #I have a lot of feelings about Anakin Skywalker lol (via @wyntersouljah)

I kind of agree and disagree here.

I agree that Anakin was at heart a good person, and that he was manipulated.  I think if he hadn’t had the kind of stressors we saw in the prequel trilogy, he probably wouldn’t have fallen.  But there are some very pronounced differences between Luke and Anakin that should be noted.

Luke, temperament-wise, is a lot closer to Padme than Anakin.  He has Anakin’s dissatisfaction with his life initially, and he has Anakin’s desire for something “else” (whereas Padme always seemed very sure of her position and life, whether as queen or senator, her approach was always “here I am, what can I do with this.”  A trait she shares with her daughter.)  But Luke doesn’t have that boiling, seething, wounded anger that Anakin has, and that’s a big difference.

This isn’t to say that Luke doesn’t get angry, but he gets angry like Padme does.  Because that’s something that I think doesn’t get a lot of attention during the prequels.  Padme spends most of the movies furious.  She is angry that Naboo is invaded and that the Senate is doing nothing.  She is angry that the Republic is being manipulated by the Separatists and that this scheming is going unanswered.  She is angry that Palpatine has manipulated himself into a position that basically renders the entire democratic process moot.

But Padme’s anger is different from Anakin’s.  Anakin’s anger is personal.  And it’s as much hurt as it is anger.  It’s a reaction to all of the terrible things that have happened to him.  It’s raw and broken.  It’s lashing out, often without direction or in the wrong direction.  In certain ways, Leia gets angry like Anakin does, but unlike Anakin, she’s grown up in an environment that has given her the tools to direct her hurt/rage and use it to refine herself and her cause, rather than suppress it.

Padme’s anger is more righteous.  Certainly she reacts to being wronged.  But it’s less about “you hurt me” and more about “this is WRONG, and MUST BE STOPPED.”  She’s a lightning bolt of fury: focused, directed, and a bit impersonal.  That doesn’t mean she can’t make mistakes (i.e. allowing Palpatine to manipulate her into putting him in a position of power), but her soul was never in danger the way Anakin’s is.  And that’s kind of how I see Luke.  He initially wanted to kill Vader because Vader killed his father, but that is more of an academic than a personal loss: Luke never knew his father.  When Luke learns new information, he’s able to redirect and move past his own rage.

I think Yoda recognized that Luke has his father’s restlessness and lack of contentment, and saw the anger in him, but misread it.  That’s what makes Luke’s subsequent reaction so important to Yoda’s decision to train him.  When Yoda says that Luke is too much like his father, Luke doesn’t display Anakin’s hurt/anger.  He calls on Ben to plead his case.  He appeals the injustice rather than nurses wounded pride.  And that is why Yoda changes his mind.

rejectedprincesses: rejectedprincesses: Jeanne de Clisson...

Jeanne de Clisson (1300-1359): the Lioness of Brittany

More historical details and footnotes up later today when I have more time. The short version is: we know she existed, that she led forces against France, that she became a pirate, and that she was protected by England. The extent of her feats varies greatly based on the telling – estimates of the length of her career as pirate range between five months and thirteen years! – but whatever the heck she actually did left quite an impression.

And here’s a quick link to buy the book!

I just added art notes and footnotes! Go check the main site entry if you’re curious, just click herehttp://www.rejectedprincesses.com/princesses/jeanne-de-clisson

The main tidbit that I think you’d enjoy was that there was another female pirate named Jeanne during this time, and the two were likely friends.

Her name was Joanna of Flanders, or Jeanne la Flamme, and she was basically running the English side of the war after her husband got imprisoned. She’s on the list for a future RP entry.

I even designed Jeanne’s early outfit after Joanna’s!

(sorry for the long reblog - won’t do it again for this entry)

Emotion vs. Logic

ThePrettiestOne

Removing the Brexit issue from the equation, when dealing with human beings, accepting whatever you're offered is NOT a logical strategy. Accepting whatever you're offered, no matter how little marks you as a weak target, who will be exploited later. It's not so much an "emotional response" of "I'll show them," it's more of a display of power, meant to improve your status in future engagements.

Honestly, the stuff that classical economists label as "logical" are downright pathological 99% of the time, and while I admire the behavioral economists, I think a lot of the time they work less on trying to understand actual human behavior, and more on explaining to the classicalists that they're wrong.

Emotion vs. Logic

I saw Long Ma last summer and boy let me tell you

it

was

totally

awesome (yeah he breathes fire)

Honestly, just go check what the Machines de L’Île do because this is like the best thing ever.

They’re currently working on L’Arbre aux hérons which is going to be a fucking metal tree that’s going to be like 25m high and which is going to have these in it

(there also going to be ants in it and caterpillars and more cool stuff)

There’s also Le Carrousel des Mondes Marins that is actually finished and is basically the coolest carrousel of the world and i’ll fight you in the pit if you don’t believe me.

Nantes is one of the best city ever (yeah i’m totally biased but i don’t care) and if you want to come in France, forget Paris, come see us (beside it’s like one hour from the sea and just under Britanny), we’re nice and we’ve got les petites beurres LU

Oh! Oh! I lived pretty near Nantes in France before I moved to Canada, and whenever I went there to see my friends, we’d check out Les Machines de l’île (because I was obsessed)!
Let’s not forget about the most famous one!

image

L’ Éléphant :D

image

Yes it walks, yes you can “ride” it, YES IT BLOWS WATER

Last time I went there the tree was well advanced too, and the carousel is just magnificent. I’m gonna emphasize the previous comment: If you go to France, definitely check out Nantes and its machines!

but really guys

tampons/pads marketed to young kids who just started getting their periods

should be a thing

wrappers with dinosaurs and planets and glitter and cats and sea creatures

make kids feel comfortable about something natural that happens to their bodies.

and for goodness sake

don’t sexualize it

No. Actually. Why do you need this? You don’t. Getting your period means you are starting to mature, which means you need to drive them AWAY from needless things like that. Also, you all bitch enough as it is about paying for these things, imagine how much more money companies will charge for those things? Or, maybe EDUCATE them, so they will already feel comfortable about it. Jesus fucking christ.

Tell that to ten-year-old me, who still hadn’t had the period talk yet in school. I was crying and freaking out because I thought I was dying. Then my mother comes up to me and says with a smile “You’re becoming a woman!” I didn’t want to grow up yet. I was ten. Fucking ten and was told to start to grow up. My mom wanted me to get away from silly little kids things because I’m fucking bleeding out my goddamn vagina.

Also some people are children at heart and like to be silly and having a dinosaur-patterned maxi-pad would be pretty fuckin’ hilarious and I’m sure there’d be a huge market for that.

Not all people with vaginas are stoic and serious and want the same frilly, swirly boring-ass pads and tampons.

Plus if you’ve been having a miserable day and say you bought the character variety pack of pads. Sitting in the bathroom stall wanting to stab everyone and you open up some baby dinosaur pads. You’ve got dinosaurs in your underwear. No ones gonna ruin your day now.

image

U by Kotex has these, Tween pads. Sparkly box, cute designs on the pad and wrapper. There are even “period facts and myths” in each box, and the inner wrapper has instructions for how to use a pad properly. What’s more is they are smaller than standard pads. (I use these pads because I’m a petite person). Best part? Everywhere I buy them, one box of pads is less than $5.

^^^^^^^ THESE ARE THE BEST BTW. VERY SOFT AND FUN AND COLORFUL. DID YOU KNOW THAT EVEN SEEING PRETTY COLORS CAN LIFT YOUR MOOD? I DIDN’T. NOW I DO.

BUT REALLY THESE ARE THE BEST OK

BECAUSE WHEN MY TEN-YEAR-OLD SISTER GOT HER PERIOD SHE WAS SUPER SCARED BUT I GAVE HER MY PACK AND SHE’S LIKE THIS LOOKS KINDA COOL AND NOW SHE THINKS SHE’S SO AWESOME AND COOL BECAUSE SHE WEARS COLORFUL PADS WITH SHOOTING STARS AND HEARTS ON THEM AND SHE’S SO CONFIDENT IT’S SO AWESOME

SO YOU TRY TELLING ME THAT SEEING A TEN YEAR OLD GIRL DEPRESSED AND ASHAMED OF A NATURAL BODY FUNCTION IS PREFERABLE TO SEEING HER SHOWING OFF HER UFO AND SHOOTING STAR-PATTERNED PADS TO HER BFFS

YOU WOULDN’T GIVE A FOUR-YEAR-OLD BOY A BORING BEIGE BAND-AID NO YOU’D GO OUT AND BUY THE HECK OUTTA THOSE SPONGEBOB AND TOY STORY SHITS BECAUSE IT MAKES THEM HAPPY DON’T MAKE YOUR GIRLS GROW OUT OF THINGS THAT MAKE THEM HAPPY BEFORE THEY’VE EVEN LEFT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Ok but U by Kotex has got all of our backs. This brand dose great and empowering things for all women and even girls :)

Why are people with vaginas expected to be grown ass adults at 10 but people with dicks aren’t expected to act like adults until their 20’s??

I got my first period when I was 12 years old on fucking CHRISTMAS DAY!!!

Seriously, fuck anyone who tells young menstruating girls it’s time to “grow up”. That scared as fuck 12 year old girl deserved a nice Christmas.

It was SO important to 15-year-old me to learn that PRINCESS LEIA (whose hair I have envied since age 7, btw) was bi-polar.

she is so good and i love her so much, and so so much for TALKING about everything so frankly. (without losing an ounce of her humor).

Once a princess, now a queen.

technically she’s a general

To us she’s royalty

She is the very model of a modern Monarch-General

concept: the communist manifesto but in the form of a call-out post

hey everyone, marx here, and this is a callout post for @capitalism. i know a lot of you are friends with capitalism but this post had to be made. there’s a spectre of us on here that don’t agree with what capitalism has been doing, and it’s time we come forward. we could not take being exploited like this any longer, so we decided to start a revolution. europe doesnt want us to post this so we’re probably gonna get some rude anons but it’s worth it.

if you need proof, you can see the receipts on how society has progressed through class struggle. you can visit this blog to read the screenshots.

for my friends’ safety i’ve hidden their names, so i’ll just refer to them as “the proletariat.”

we’ve tried to call out capitalism before but the ruling class has only reformed, with private property merely changing hands, not being destroyed. please reblog this to signal boost and to destroy capitalism completely so that private property will be permanently abolished and classes will disappear forever, thank you

New rule, non muslims can’t say the word jihad. Until you stop conflating a word that means personal struggle with faith and temptation with terrorism youre just not allowed to say it.

I’m not a Muslim but I just thought I would reblog this because I think it’s definitely worth listening to.

It’s totally okay for non muslims to reblog this, and i encourage it. Im just glad you’re listening.

Oh god, finally someone said it. Every time I see words like “jihadist” I want to scream, but I’m not Muslim, so I wasn’t sure I should say anything.

Jihad means struggle. It doesn’t mean holy war or anything like it. In fact, there is no word in Islam for holy war, because the nature of Islam does not leave room for holy war. Islam has a juridical system, not a Pope who can just say “Go wage holy war.” Conflating the personal nature of jihad with violence is so very gross and it needs to stop. Period.

There is, however, a word for “holy war” in Western Christian society: Crusade. Gee, I wonder why that seems to only have positive connotations…..
