Abbreviated pundit roundup: Editorial boards across the country slam Trump's cruel budget

by rss@dailykos.com (Georgia Logothetis)

The man who lost the popular vote for president unveiled a budget that would negatively impact everyone in the country. The result is editorial boards across America are panning his cruel, short-sighted budget. First up, The New York Times:

This document is at once scary and uninformative. Taken at face value, it would impose pain for pain’s sake. Looked at more broadly, it tees up spending cuts that will be needlessly deep in order to accommodate tax cuts.

The Tampa Bay Times:

President Donald Trump is now saying the border wall that he promised Mexico would pay for will be paid for another way — by stripping away the defenses that protect Florida and the entire Gulf Coast from the threat of hurricanes, drug trafficking and natural disasters. This is one of the most irresponsible ideas from the new administration, and Congress should insist on a smarter approach that doesn't endanger national security in the guise of promoting it.

The Kansas City Star:

The two most stunning things about the federal budget proposal issued by the Trump administration Thursday are these:

Domestically, its cuts would fall hardest on low-income Americans in rural areas, aka Trump voters.

It also slashes funding for diplomacy, foreign aid, the U.S. Agency for International Development and United Nations peacekeepers during what the U.N. has called the gravest humanitarian crisis since 1945. Would the world then hear from us only with bombs?

Humans are adorable.

ThePrettiestOne

OK, but we're still a garbage species.

Supporting evidence:

1. Humans say ‘ow’, even if they haven’t actually been hurt. It’s just a thing they say when they think they might have been hurt, but aren’t sure yet.

2. Humans collect shiny things and decorate their bodies and nests with them. The shinier the better, although each individual has a unique taste for style and colouring

3. Humans are not an aquatic or even amphibious species, but they flock to bodies of water simply to play in it. They can’t even hold their breath all that long; they just love to splash!

4. When night falls and the sky goes dark, humans become drowsy and begin to cocoon themselves in soft, fluffy bedding.

5. Some humans spend time in each other’s nests! Just for fun! It’s not their nest; they’re just visiting each other.

6. Some humans use pigments and dyes to make their bodies flashy and colourful! They even attach shiny dangly bits to their cartalidgous membranes!

7. Humans are very clever, and sometimes adopt creatures from other species into their family units. They don’t seem to notice the obvious differences, and often raise them alongside their own young!

8. If a human sees another creature in distress, they can commonly be observed trying to help! Even at their own risk, most humans are deeply compassionate creatures!

9. If a human hears a particularity catchy sound or tune, it will often mimic it, even to the point of annoying themselves!

10. Sneezes are entirely involuntary, and completely adorable. Especially when the human in question becomes frustrated

11. Humans love treats!!! Some more than others. Many humans will save these treats specifically for a later date when they are in need of comfort or reassurance. IE, pickles, pop tarts, Popsicles, etc

12. They’re learning to travel in space!!! They can’t get very far, but they’re trying!!! So far, they’ve made it to the end of their yard, and have found rocks

this sounds like it was written by a really enthusiastic alien humanologist

grocery stores hate him! local man discovers gardening

Clickbait aside, this is kind of a weird thing if you’ve never done gardening. I remember when I first made the connection that vegetables were plants and plants had seeds, and it was WILD. I mean gardening is an information game like anything else, good for this guy and his one weird trick.

My wife has started growing lettuce for eating, and it unnerves me.  Like, lettuce shouldn’t be ALIVE, man.  It’s just this crunchy green stuff you put on a turkey sandwich.  And yet, there it is, every day, getting larger and larger, growing from a tiny little speck into this living being, right up until we TEAR IT APART.  And then it grows more and it thinks it’s gonna make it this time and yet we TEAR IT APART AGAIN.

And it’s not like with hamburger.  That cow could have been an asshole.  This lettuce never did anything to anybody.

I’m thinking of becoming entirely carnivorous.  It feels more ethical.

How to: break my heart. A tutorial by Mad Max: Fury Road

Let’s talk about this scene a little, because I noticed a particular detail in my last viewing that’s had me buzzing and buzzing crying a lot.

Let’s start with the obvious: the whole film Nux has wanted to establish his life has some meaning by dying “historic on the Fury Road.” Of course, all his previous efforts were attempts to continue things the way they were–in Immortal Joe’s terms. Thus, those deaths would not have really been historic. They would have been forgotten, just another blip in the status quo. In crashing the rig and allowing the wives to return to the Citadel, Nux does in fact fulfill his wish to die historic–without his actions, the wives likely would not have been able to return to the city and enact the changes they inevitably do. His death matters in a way none of the other deaths in the film do–it matters to changing the future, and thus becomes an important part of the future Citadel’s history.

Nux only knows how to do that in his own terms, though–the terms of the War Boys. Thus, his death only gains significance if it is witnessed. For Nux, the action itself is not as important as it being seen and acknowledged. This makes a lot of sense in terms of Immortal Joe’s world and its patriarchal structure. Individuals are not important, actions don’t matter unless they are showy and seen–all life boils down not to meaningful actions but to showing off.

But here’s why this film is a feminist masterpiece, and why this scene in particular cements that: Capable’s reaction.

Capable does witness him. She locks eyes and acknowledges the significance of his action, of his inevitable death. But she doesn’t respond like one of the War Boys–when the War Boys die asking to be witnessed, the others respond yelling “Witnessed!” This answer does say, “I have seen your action, it matters,” but hollered with usual the War Boy bravado, it also acts as an attempt for the witnessing War Boys to build up their own importance by making themselves part of the action.

Capable does not yell “Witnessed.” She responds with a gesture–holding her hand out and pulling it toward her heart. This is the Vuvalini’s gesture of mourning–a beautiful gesture that essentially mimics pulling the lost soul into one’s own heart. Capable has only just learned this gesture, but she seems to innately understand its significance. Thus, while she witnesses Nux’s death, she refuses to “witness” him in the sense of the War Boys and instead mourns him in the manner of the Vuvalini. Nux likely sees this–the editing implies he doesn’t turn the rig until after he’s seen the gesture. Thus, he knows he is witnessed, but more importantly, he knows that he will be mourned and remembered. With that knowledge, he finally has the strength and the worthy reason to sacrifice his life for a cause that matters.

This moment is also the moment Immortal Joe’s power is officially broken. Yes, Joe is dead, but Rictus and a whole gang of War Boys and their ilk are photon their wheels, ready to re-establish the status quo. In many ways it is a transfer of power–the last call to witness leads to the first time the Wives truly embrace the culture and ideology of the Vuvalini as their guiding principle. Joe’s power is broken not so much by the explosion–though that is certainly the blunt force that finishes the deal. Joe’s power is broken by self sacrifice–a self-sacrifice born not of bravado or the hope of becoming a legend, but one born of community, of love, of hope. Capable’s response guarantees that Nux’s sacrifice will be honored and remembered, but in a new way in their new world.

blue–green

I’m having emotions over the simple, quiet way he reaches out a hand towards her, and say “Witness me”. Every other time that line has been said, it’s been all cock-swinging showman testosterone. It has been screamed and bellowed and roared in pain and fury and violence.

And here, this lost War Boy looks into the eyes of the first person who spoke to him with kindness and compassion, and she is the only person he cares about in this moment: she is the only person he wants to witness him, because she is the most important person to him.

And her response could not be more perfect.

Goddamnit I’m crying again

Honestly, I love posts like this, where people tell what hurts them, and what helps them. It's a privilege being given this information. Anybody who's ever willing to tell me how they feel about what people say to them is giving me the gift of hopefully not making an ass of myself.

EDIT: hey I appreciate the love but as the notes grow on this post I am seeing more and more transphobic shit on here. For those posting/tagging this with things like “he looks so good” and “I love men in dresses”; I am not a man. I’m nonbinary and I use they pronouns.

i’m glad you guys like my look, but I stressed about this for months because it was my first formal event where I was able to present as my gender. Nonbinary isn’t just dfab people in suits. As a very “masculine bodied” dmab person I prefer to wear dresses and skirts to present as nonbinary. I’m not a man in a dress. Saying “I love men in dresses” or “why does he have better legs than me” is not supportive of me. It’s transphobic. Cis women do not have a copyright on good legs.

Please do not use my post where I actually felt good about myself to enforce your binary. I have spent too long panicking over what to wear to work, and to school, and to family dinners, and to formal events, and to weddings to be labeled as a “man in a dress”

Reblogging because this is beautiful and totally should’ve been in the movie

Why are moments like this not in the movies? :’(

I have this headcanon that after Neville proposed to Hannah Abbott, he went to his parents at St. Mungo’s and sat with them. Even though he was sure she wouldn’t understand or remember, he held his mother’s hands and told her, “I’m getting married, Mum. She’s great. You’ll really like her.” Alice just hummed and stared off into the distance. No reaction. Neville still stayed, telling his parents all about Hannah and their plans, and how she wanted so badly to come meet them and he would bring her next time.

Then, as he put his hand on the door handle to leave, he felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Alice. She held out her hand as she had done so many times before. Expecting a candy wrapper, Neville held out his hand but felt something heavier drop into it.

When he looked down, there were two rings. And when he glanced to his mother’s hand, there was an indent where her wedding ring had once rested but was no longer there.

Is everything in this post designed to make me fucking sob?

Prominent Democrats trash Trump regime's budget assault on the most vulnerable Americans

by rss@dailykos.com (Meteor Blades)

The massacre posing as a serious budget proposal released by the White House Thursday has sparked some responses from leading Democrats. Most of these came our way via e-mail:

Sen. Kamala D. Harris of California said:

“A budget is a reflection of our nation’s values and it’s clear from this proposal, President Trump does not value government’s essential functions of public health, public safety, and public education. If you are a child, college student, or senior, live in a rural or urban area, are a worker in need of a safe workplace, or simply want to breathe clean air, drink clean water, and drive on good roads, this budget is a disaster for you and your family. We will not make our country stronger with cuts to meals and jobs programs for seniors, scientific research to cure cancer, financial assistance to students, diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to make our nation safer, support for farmers, or affordable housing.

“In the first months of this Administration, the President has shown he is willing to go to extreme lengths to cut core functions to the bone in order to make taxpayers pay for a border wall experts agree we don’t need and give tax breaks to corporations. I will fight this budget proposal at every step because middle class Americans are counting on us to stand up for them.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said:

“President Trump’s budget is morally obscene and bad economic policy. It will cause devastating pain to the very people Trump promised to help during the campaign. At a time of massive income and wealth inequality, when 43 million Americans are living in poverty, and half of older Americans have no retirement savings, we should not slash programs that senior citizens, children, and working people rely on in order to provide a massive increase in spending to the military industrial complex. Trump’s priorities are exactly opposite of where we should be heading as a nation.”

Senate Intelligence Committee finds no evidence to support Trump's 'wiretapp' claims

by rss@dailykos.com (Mark Sumner)
ThePrettiestOne

If this isn't impeachment worthy behavior, I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Donald Trump says he has “very good stuff” to back up his tweets claiming that President Obama wiretapped his phones during the campaign, but Trump’s getting no support from the Senate.

The Republican chairman and top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee said in a joint statement Thursday they have seen no evidence to support President Donald Trump’s claim about Trump Tower being wiretapped.

The committee found no evidence that Trump Tower was under surveillance by the FBI or by anyone else. Air quotes or no air quotes, it’s getting harder and harder to think of any way in which Trump’s claims could be even remotely true. Trump himself even seems to doubt Trump, but still acts as if he has a card or two to play.

He said he would be “submitting certain things” to a congressional committee investigating the matter and that he was considering speaking about the topic next week.

Apparently that committee is not the Intelligence committee, because they appear to be done. Then again, maybe Trump just intends to warp the nation’s mind through 11-dimensional tic-tac-toe.

"Let's see whether or not I prove it," Trump said. "I just don't choose to do it right now."

FBI Director Comey is expected to testify about this matter in open session on Monday.

Congressman says Trump appears to have revealed classified information during Fox News interview

by rss@dailykos.com (Jen Hayden)
ThePrettiestOne

OK, so, back to that "impeachable behavior" thing I was talking about one post ago...

During an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News last night, Carlson asked Trump about his allegations that President Obama wiretapped Donald Trump and/or Trump Tower and Trump responded thusly:

TRUMP: Because I don't want to do anything that's going to violate any strength of an agency. We have enough problems.

And by the way, with the CIA, I just want people to know, the CIA was hacked, and a lot of things taken -- that was during the Obama years. That was not during us. That was during the Obama situation. Mike Pompeo is there now doing a fantastic job.

But, we will be submitting certain things and I will be perhaps speaking about this next week, but it's right now before the committee, and I think I want to leave it. I have a lot of confidence in the committee.

Emphasis added. Rep. Adam Schiff, a ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, believes Donald Trump appears to have revealed highly classified intelligence information during the interview.

Stop saying “this is what they want” when people act violently against nazis. What they want is a debate. They want genocide to be something polite society can agree or disagree with. They want to be elevated to the general public discourse by having their ideas argued with. Violence is the exact opposite of what they want. Richard Spencer didn’t want to get punched in the face, he wanted good people to keep quiet, to respect his rights and let him calmly discuss white nationalism. Violence throws a wrench in all their plans. It shows them their carefully planned tactics to infiltrate mainstream discussion are utterly failing. Punching a nazi will get you in legal trouble but don’t let people tell you it’s what they want.

I’m pretty pacifist but this is the first nazi-punching discourse post that’s made me go “this this THIS.”

This Stray Cat Snuck Into A Nursing Home, And Got A Job

Meet Oreo, the cat who somehow found her way into a nursing home – and decided to work there. “She’s like the family here. She helps the residents, she helps the employees, and we just love her,” said Carmen Delgado, receptionist of St. Augustine Health Ministries in Cleveland, Ohio.

Everyone appreciates the kitty’s presence. “Most of the people we serve here had pets… so to have Oreo here, for them to be able to come out and pet the cat and see how the cat is doing… it brings… those feelings of home,” Dana Carns, director of advancement, said.

“I’m always getting pictures, even on the weekends or at night that the staff are taking. ‘Oh look, Oreo is at the reception desk, answering the phone, because it’s after hours’, or ‘she’s sitting on a bench with a resident who’s waiting for her ride.'”

“I think it just brings a lot of laughter, a lot of smiles, and a lot of just normalcy.”

How much does Trump want to screw over those in need? His budget eliminates Meals on Wheels

by rss@dailykos.com (Barbara Morrill)

There will be a lot written today about the popular vote losing buffoon’s newly released budget plan, but let’s take a moment to focus on this one proposal that perfectly encapsulates Trump’s vision for America:

the complete elimination of the $3 billion Community Development Block Grant program, which funds popular programs like Meals on Wheels, housing assistance and other community assistance efforts.

God bless America. Unless you’re poor and infirm. You can starve.
