Online gambling sites adopt Bitcoin in an effort to circumvent the law

by Ben Kersey
Samgarfield

I sure hope someone doesn't try to sirsumvent the law.

This story isn't that interesting, I just wanted to say that.

Bitcoins (Casascius)

Online gambling sites are turning their attention towards Bitcoin, with BusinessWeek describing how one site is letting US users pay with the digital tender following a huge poker site crackdown in 2011. Money never hits US banks at all, allowing the sites to operate without fear of reprisal from the government. Even the payouts are quicker — what normally takes up to 12 weeks with a US bank transfer takes only a matter of hours with Bitcoin. The new use for the decentralized currency will no doubt raise some legal questions, but for now the online US gambling community has found its workaround.

White House Must Answer Petition To 'Build Death Star'

by Soulskill
Samgarfield

I'm positive this will get the same exact amount of consideration as every other idea submitted to that site.

EdIII writes "The White House petition to secure funding for building the Death Star has garnered over 25,000 signatures, which means the White House must officially respond. I can't wait to see it. My question to Slashdot readers: what modifications would you add to the proposed Death Star? Obviously, as one journalist put it, 'guardrails around any of the facility's seemingly endless number of bridges, spans, shafts and pits.' What other changes would you ask your representatives to make?"

North Korean satellite likely dead and out of control, New York Times reports

I'm amazed at how close they got.

north south korea border

A satellite launched by North Korea last week is likely dead in space, The New York Times reports. The satellite headed to orbit successfully, carrying a camera to observe the Earth, but Harvard astronomer Jonathan McDowell tells the Times that it's now "tumbling and we haven’t picked up any transmissions... Those two things are most consistent with the satellite being entirely inactive at this point." That's similar to what we heard shortly after launch, when US officials told NBC News that the satellite was "tumbling out of control" in orbit. McDowell says that though the rocket launch clearly "worked very well," evidence suggested that the satellite had either failed as it ascended to orbit or shortly afterwards.

North Korea has...

Fine artist and designer INSA creates elaborately painted walls that are photographed in sequence to create these amazing, psychedelic animated gifs. His latest piece (top 3 images) is a collaboration with artist Stanley Donwood called Hollywood Dooom to help celebrate the release of a new album for Atoms for Peace, AMOK, for which Donwood did the album artwork. INSA painted the entire exterior of XL Recordings four times to create the frames for the animation. Of the work he says:

My challenge was to take two very static items, a beautiful lino-cut and a less beautiful box of a building, and bring them to life. After a week of sweating in the Los Angeles late summer sun re-painting the whole building several times I got there. Animated as a continuous GIF it may only live online but some would argue that is where most now live there lives…

You can see more of INSA’s gif work and other pieces on his blog. (via the creator’s project)

Netflix launches monthly ISP speed rankings, praises Google Fiber, and calls out AT&T

by Adi Robertson
Samgarfield

Wow Comcast is rated third. I guess it could be worse for us.

Netflix iPhone 5

Netflix is widely acknowledged to make up a large chunk of downstream internet traffic, and the company is now using that position to start charting how fast ISPs can stream movies to customers. Every month, it's announced, it will post the average download speeds for US video streaming. Netflix has published broad speed measurements before, but now it's creating an ongoing tally of how ISPs are doing, complete with indications of whether a service provider has moved up or down. It's also started differentiating by service, separating things like Verizon's FiOS and DSL offerings.

The results, right now, are pretty much what you'd expect: Google Fiber leads by a solid margin at an average of 2.55Mbps, with Verizon FiOS in second place,...

Netflix Orders Two to Five More Episodes of ‘Arrested Development’

by Angie Han
Samgarfield

Reshare @Jude

A little over a year ago, Netflix made TV lovers’ dreams come true with the announcement that they’d be reviving Arrested Development for a ten-episode season. The word came as even the most diehard fans had lost all hope of ever seeing the Bluths again, no matter how optimistically creator Mitch Hurwitz talked up the movie sequel. Today’s news can’t quite top that initial announcement, but it’s pretty sweet nonetheless.

The streaming service has agreed to bump up the original order by two to five more episodes, bringing the Season 4 total up to 12 or 15. Production is currently paused while Hurwitz adjusts for the expanded season, which is still on track to debut this spring. More details after the jump.

We first got word of the possibility of extra episodes in August, when star David Cross dropped a hint during a Rolling Stone interview. “I think it’s going to be 13 episodes, not 10,” he said at the time. “There’s too much story.” The next day, Netflix responded to Cross’ comments by stating that the show would hit in spring 2013 with “at least” ten more episodes. The company still isn’t confirming the exact episode count, but Deadline reports they’ve begun making adjustments for them behind the scenes.

The additional episodes came about when Hurwitz wound up with more material than he’d planned on and started coming up with ideas for additional story arcs. He approached Netflix, who agreed to bump up the order. More episodes means more work, of course. Production has already run over its slated post-Thanksgiving end date by a few weeks, and is now going on hiatus until late January so Hurwitz can rework the episodes for new scenes and plotlines.

Once Hurwitz has his plan figured out, the studio will arrange for the actors’ return. One of the challenges will be working around their schedules, since they may be tied up with other television or film projects. As of now, though, we’re still expecting all 12-15 episodes of Arrested Development Season 4 to hit in the spring.

Burrito Bomber

by jwz@jwz.org
Samgarfield

I would totally do this. Every day.

The world's first airborne mexican food delivery system

It works like this:

  1. You connect to the Burrito Bomber web-app and order a burrito. Your smartphone sends your current location to our server, which generates a waypoint file compatible with the drone's autopilot.

  2. We upload the waypoint file to the drone and load your burrito in to our custom made Burrito Delivery Tube.

  3. The drone flies to your location and releases the Burrito Delivery Tube. The burrito parachutes down to you, the drone flies itself home, and you enjoy your carne asada.

Former Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki says ‘real men use Android’

by Scott Webster
Samgarfield

Interesting stuff from an Apple fanboy. The best position is to be platform agnostic, and be willing to change your opinion as often as the technology changes, which is every day.

One of the more prolific Apple figures of the 1980′s, Guy Kawasaki, loves his Android smartphones and tablets. So much so, in fact, he no longer uses Apple mobile devices.

An article over at ReadWrite tells us that the former Apple evangelist switched to Android (Droid Razr Maxx, Galaxy S III) roughly one year ago so that he could take advantage of 4G speeds. After falling for our beloved platform, Kawasaki also began using a Nexus 7 tablet

Apple’s iOS Maps app is so bad it can kill you, Australian police warn

by Zach Epstein
Samgarfield

Ouch for Apple.

Apple Maps Criticism

Apple’s (AAPL) iOS Maps application is terrible. We all know it. The service is so bad that CEO Tim Cook issued a public apology shortly after it launched, and vowed the company would right the situation as soon as possible. It has only been a few months since Apple launched its Google Maps replacement and while that’s not much time to overhaul such a massive undertaking, the company probably wishes it could have improved the service before Australian authorities issued a public warning saying Apple Maps is so bad, it might kill you.

“Local Police have been called to assist distressed motorists who have become stranded within the Murray-Sunset National Park after following directions on their Apple i-phone,” police in Victoria, Australia said in a public warning issued on Monday. “Tests on the mapping system by police confirm the mapping systems lists Mildura in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park, approximately 70km away from the actual location of Mildura.”

The warnings continued, “Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the Park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees, making this a potentially life threatening issue. Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception.”

Apple’s Maps app has been called a lot of things, but seeing the solution is called “life threatening” by a police force has to be a tough blow for Apple, which regularly uses the phrase “it just works” when describing its products and solutions.

Victoria police note that they have had to rescue a total of six people over the past two months who because lost and stranded while navigating using Apple’s Maps application.

'Star Trek Into Darkness' trailer finally hits the web

by Aaron Souppouris

Ohhhhhhhhh! Can't wait!

star trek into darkness poster

A trailer for JJ Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness has just hit YouTube. Menacingly narrated by Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch as (possibly) the infamous Khan, the trailer depicts a number of the Starfleet crew in distress along with the customary hype music. A longer version (complete with Japanese subtitles) ends with a nod to Wrath of Khan that might just be the worst spoiler to feature in an announcement trailer ever — or perhaps it's just JJ Abrams toying with us. We've included both below.

International trailer:
