Tech Worker Groups Boycott IBM, Infosys, Manpower

by Soulskill
itwbennett writes: "Three U.S. tech worker groups have launched a labor boycott of IBM, Infosys and Manpower, saying the companies have engaged in a pattern that discourages U.S. workers from applying for U.S. IT jobs by tailoring employment ads toward overseas workers. For its part, Infosys disputed the charges, saying that 'it is incorrect to allude that we exclude or discourage U.S. workers. Today, we are recruiting for over 440 active openings across 20 states in the U.S.' Representatives from IBM and Manpower didn't respond to requests for comment on the boycott."

Google Announces 'End-To-End' Encryption Extension For Chrome

by Soulskill
Nexus Unplugged (2495076) writes 'On their security blog today, Google announced a new Chrome extension called "End-To-End" intended to make browser-based encryption of messages easier for users. The extension, which was rumored to be "underway" a couple months ago, is currently in an "alpha" version and is not yet available pre-packaged or in the Chrome Web Store. It utilizes a Javascript implementation of OpenPGP, meaning that your private keys are never sent to Google. However, if you'd like to use the extension on multiple machines, its keyring is saved in localStorage, which can be encrypted with a passphrase before being synced. The extension still qualifies for Google's Vulnerability Reward Program, and joins a host of PGP-related extensions already available for Chrome.' Google also published a report showing how much email is encrypted in transit between Gmail addresses and those from other providers.

Google's Project Loon suffers accident as balloon takes out power lines

by Chris Welch

Google has confirmed that a balloon involved in its Project Loon struck power lines and knocked out electricity for some residents of a Washington town last week. The company told NBC News that the balloon was "in the process of a controlled landing" at around 1AM when it took out a small number of electrical lines. Prior to the descent, Google notified FAA officials of the landing to avoid any risk of interference with nearby air traffic.

Unfortunately, Google has no way of ensuring its balloons won't wreak havoc once they're closer to the ground; there's little the company can do about unexpected wind gusts, for example. Responding to the incident, a utility worker came upon "what appeared to be a weather balloon with blinking lights entangled in the power lines," reported the Yakamina Herald Republic. The entire scene was cleared by 6AM.

To Google's credit, it's apparently done exhaustive research to prevent (or at least greatly minimize) accidents like these. The Project Loon website specifies that balloons are normally brought down over "preselected, safe recovery zones." They're all equipped with parachutes designed to automatically deploy if a balloon is falling too fast; these also help slow down emergency landings if and when they prove necessary. Google's goal with Project Loon is to beam down internet access to remote and rural areas that ordinarily receive poor connectivity — or none at all. A sophisticated balloon network is central to this effort; each balloon travels in the stratosphere, high above commercial air space, for several months at a time. The company obviously hopes to avoid incidents like this one as it pushes that mission forward.

NEW PRODUCT – Universal Qi Wireless Receiver Module

If you have a modern smart phone you may have noticed that it comes with built in wireless charging capability called ‘Qi charging.’ Qi is a trademark name for a thin and smart inductive charging system. Many large gadget companies have standardized on Qi, which means it’s easy to find a charging dish and we thought it might be cool if your Arduino project can recharge itself wirelessly. Thus, we now have a Qi charging receiver module as seen here here.

This is just the inductive charging Qi receiver, it will work with any Qi charger base transmitter. that will work well with any standard inductive charger base. Simply solder two wires to the V+ and Gnd pins on the Qi module and place the item you want charged onto a charging base. The receiver chip manages the coil so that you’ll always get 5V and 500mA. If the coil is too far it will simply not activate at all. In our demo below, we used a classic cell phone charger plate.

NewImage

To demo it, we wired the module to a MiniLipo charger and a LiPo battery, as shown in the photos. Now we have a wirelessly-rechargeable battery! Note that you don’t get the battery or lipo charger in your order, that’s just how we’re showing it off. You can even upgrade any device that takes classic USB 5V and up to 500mA. The coil comes on a metallic sticker which is used to shield the device from the coil. Make sure the coil is facing out towards the charger when you install it into your project, or it wont work at all!

The driver chip is an integrated receiver called the BQ51053B from TI. Since its a Qi charger it can only be used with Qi transmitters! If you want a simpler inductive charger, check out our 5V charger set – it isn’t Qi compatible but used together it works quite well!

Everything Wrong with the Film ‘Gravity’ Featuring Guest Narrator Neil deGrasse Tyson

tw: casual sexism (by the CinemaSins guy, not by NdGT)

CinemaSins has released a special new video that discovers “Everything Wrong with Gravity.” To make sure that their science and space facts were straight, CinemaSins called upon astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson to help out as guest narrator. We’ve previously written about CinemaSins’ ongoing series of Everyone Wrong With videos.

Gravity had such specific science-related sins, we thought it wise to bring in someone who knows TONS more than we do about science, Mr. Neil deGrasse Tyson himself. Yep, that’s really him.

Newswire: John Oliver may have crashed the FCC’s comments system

by Sonia Saraiya
firehose

'an FCC spokeswoman would only confirm that the system was down for a few hours on Monday, adding that it was “unclear if the high volume was directly related to the John Oliver segment.”'

On Sunday night, John Oliver dedicated much of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver to talking about net neutrality, particularly as it relates to some proposed rule changes by the FCC. On Monday morning, the FCC’s comments system went down. Coincidence? Well, the FCC isn’t eager to draw that particular line of cause-and-effect; according to Variety, an FCC spokeswoman would only confirm that the system was down for a few hours on Monday, adding that it was “unclear if the high volume was directly related to the John Oliver segment.”

Oh, sure. But if you watch the segment in question (it’s a long one, but it’s great), at around 11:15, Oliver puts up the FCC comments page URL, does away with fancy graphics, and directly implores Internet commenters to do his bidding:

Good evening, monsters. This may be the moment you’ve spent your whole ...

Great Job, Internet!: Read This: one man’s magnificent obsession with the DragonStrike instructional tape

by Katie Rife

Certain things, if viewed at the exact right time, can stay lodged in a child’s brain forever. That’s exactly what happened to Don Jolly, who recounts his nearly 20-year obsession with the DragonStrike board game—or, more specifically, the VHS tape that came with the DragonStrike board game—over at Boing Boing. DragonStrike was a board game released in 1993 by TSR, the company behind Dungeons & Dragons, that Jolly describes as “ D&D with training wheels;” the VHS tape that accompanied the game explains its basic characters and rules, interwoven with a fantasy storyline featuring coyote wizards and a CGI dragon.

Jolly came into possession of the tape when he was 10 years old and claims to have watched it at least once a month since, building up a mythos surrounding its disembodied-head narrator and primitive green screen aesthetic in the absence of any online information about the ...

erikkwakkel: Doodle by bored medieval school boy This...

erikkwakkel:

Doodle by bored medieval school boy

This 15th-century doodle is found in the lower margin of a manuscript containing Juvenal’s Satires. This classical text was a popular device to teach young students - kids - morals. The medieval teacher Alexander Nequam stated: “Let the student read the satirists […] so that he may learn even in his younger days that vices are to be shunned” (quote here). Spoken like a true optimist, because this page shows what young school boys like to do with rules: disobey them. And so in stead of studying the student who used this book drew a funny doodle in the lower margin: a figure with a flower in one hand and what appears to be a pipe in the other. Could it be his teacher? Doodles are of all ages but those produced by bored school kids are the most entertaining.

Pic: Carpentras, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 368 (here). Here is another example of school kids doodling.

Crows discovered the principle of displacement in the third century BC, when the philosopher Awkimedes, upon noticing the level of his bird bath rose in proportion with the amount of his body that was submerged, reportedly exclaimed “EURECAW!” and flew through the streets of Athens shouting his discovery.

Amazon is not the only place to buy books

seananmcguire:

malindalo:

In case you haven’t heard, Amazon is engaged in a legal battle with Hachette over the rates that Hachette pays Amazon to sell Hachette books. In order to strongarm Hachette into giving in, Amazon has delayed shipping on many Hachette titles, meaning that they’re telling customers that books won’t be shipped for several weeks, even if they’re actually in stock and readily available. Amazon has also removed BUY buttons from upcoming titles and may be engaging in other tactics, such as raising book prices.

All my novels are published by Hachette — specifically by Little, Brown, an imprint of Hachette. Right now the paperbacks and hardcovers of all my books may be “delayed” by Amazon which may make it seem like you can’t get them. BUT YOU CAN. It’s only Amazon that doesn’t want to sell them to you right now.

This affects all authors who are published by Hachette; many of my friends are in this same situation. In fact, some of my friends have been through this more than once — Amazon delisted all of Macmillan’s books a couple of years ago, and Barnes & Noble stopped carrying Simon & Schuster titles during their negotiations recently. I just wanted to let you know about this latest development because it’s kind of an inside baseball situation that isn’t clear to ordinary readers.

The negotiations seem to have been stalled for at least a couple of weeks now, and it looks like they may not get anywhere for quite a while. If you’d like to read more about it, here’s a New York Times piece about the Hachette CEO, Michael Pietsch, and a Mashable post about how other booksellers are reacting.

The thing is, Amazon dominates 41% of new book purchases both online and off, and 65% of all online new books, both print and ebook (Publishers Weekly). When Amazon decides to not ship my books, it is unquestionably going to have a negative effect on my book sales and thus on my career. The only thing I can do about this personally is to remind you — my readers — that if you’d like to buy my books, Amazon is not the only place to get them. In fact, in reaction to Amazon’s tactics, many booksellers have begun to discount titles published by Hachette, including mine.

If you’d like to buy print versions of my books, here are several places you can order them online at a discount right now:

Additionally, if you’d like to support independent bookstores, I recommend trying some of these stores, where you can buy the books in person or online:

  • Powells
  • Book Passage — Before I moved last month, this was my local bookstore, and they likely have signed copies of my books in stock.
  • Books Inc — This is a great local San Francisco Bay Area chain that has hosted me for several events and do a great job with promoting YA books in general.
  • Borderlands Books — A great San Francisco-based science fiction and fantasy bookstore that has also hosted me for events and does a lot for the SF/F community.
  • Mysterious Galaxy — San Diego’s legendary bookstore, another great source for sci fi and fantasy.
  • Book People — Austin’s amazing indie that supported the Austin Teen Book Festival I was at in the fall, which has copies of Adaptation and Inheritance on stock on their shelves right now.
  • If you’d like to look for an independent bookstore in your local area where you can order my books (usually they can get them in within a couple of days if they’re not on the shelf), go to IndieBound and search for bookstores near you.

If you normally read ebooks only, this issue with Amazon and Hachette is not affecting you right now; Amazon’s Kindle store is delivering Hachette ebooks without issue (for now). I have no idea what Amazon is going to do in the future, though, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Kindle store might also be affected later on. I understand that Amazon is making business decisions in their best interest, but it’s hard for me to be sympathetic to their tactics when it clearly negatively affects my career.

Meanwhile, I hope this list of places where you can buy my books is useful. Thank you for supporting my books in whatever way you can or have done, whether by buying them or by asking your library to carry them. I really appreciate it.

Great guide.  This impacts a lot of my friends, and everything under the “Mira Grant” byline.

amamblog: If you have ever admired Japanese woodblock prints...

amamblog:

If you have ever admired Japanese woodblock prints for their amazing imagery, colors and compositions, you will be even more impressed when you learn about how they were made.  Oberlin College Library’s Special Collections department has just made available images of a fascinating illustrated book on the process of Japanese woodblock printmaking.

The book, titled Nishikie suritate junjo, was part of the renowned Mary A. Ainsworth collection of Japanese prints and artist’s books.  Ainsworth was an Oberlin graduate (OC 1889) who visited Japan in 1906 and spent the next twenty-five years building one of the best collections of Japanese prints of her day, which she bequeathed to Oberlin College in 1950.   During Japan’s Edo Period (1603-1868) polychrome woodblock prints were among the most famous products of the “Floating World” (Ukiyo), or world of entertainment.  Creating these multicolor images required a different woodblock for each color, and the book lays out these complex stages of printing one by one, using as an example a famous print from Andō Hiroshige’s series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaidō.

For more images from the book, click here

To see three different impressions of this same print from the AMAM collection, search for “Rain at Shono” in the “Quick Search” box here.

Nice transitions between subgenres too

Sure, some video games require lightning-fast fingers, but even the most insane combos in Street Fighter don't quite compare to running up and down a guitar's fretboard lickety-split. To pay tribute to 40-plus years of gaming history, YouTuber FamilyJules7X put together an epic 17-minute performance (embedded after the break) of music from the medium's past and present. If you ever wanted to hear heavy metal versions of classic game-themes like Space Invaders, Phozon and Tetris alongside those of Donkey Kong Country, Earthbound, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Fallout 3, this should be right up your alley. Most impressive? Jules shot the video, mixed the audio, programmed the drums and performed the guitar and bass parts himself in eight days -- all during his last week of college finals. If you want to download an MP3 of the track, hit the YouTube page. Now, if you'll pardon us, we have some head-banging to do.
